Harry Uhlman Bandstand Dedicated

t was fitting, indeed. The Marine Park Bandstand had been completely renewed (see South Boston Online’s article, August 23, page five), the Park grounds had never been a lovelier shade of green, and 500 (or more) friends, family, officials, and especially “Special Kids and Young Adults” had gathered to honor Harry Uhlman. Here at South Boston Online, we aren’t sure there

The Harry Uhlman Bandstand – newly renovated – in Marine Park. ever has been a more deserving person than Harry; he simply makes the saying “He’s a Saint on Earth” come true. And Harry is obviously humble about it, because he always gives the credit to other people.

It was an astonishingly lovely day at Marine Park last Saturday.

It is Molly Baechtold of the Boston Circus Guild, the troop who came to entertain at Discover Moakley this past weekend. In cooperation with multiple agencies in the Boston area, the Boston City Parks department pulled out all the stops with a no holds barred all day event. Designed as the South Boston installment of the city wide Climate Change Week, this free event was well attended and the adults and kids enjoyed the carnival atmosphere set up on both Carsen Beach and Moakley Park..

HUD Award to Excel JROTC

A

wards count; so does patriotism in young adults.

Nowhere are these truisms more evident than at Excel High School, in its Awardwinning U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (commonly abbreviated to “JROTC”). Excel’s JROTC unit refers to itself locally as the “Knights Battalion”.

Just before the start of this 2018-2019 school year, Excel was notified by the U.S. Army Cadet Command that its JROTC unit had been awarded designation as a “HUD” – “Honor Unit with Distinction”. The HUD is the highest award an Army JROTC battalion can receive. This Award was based upon a Program of Accreditation that was conducted during the last school year, 2017-2018; the Award is valid until the next Accreditation in 2020.

South Boston Online will quote from the letter that Excel’s staff received, “Your JROTC Program is part of an elite group that achieved this Award, out of over 1,700 Army JROTC Programs hosted by the U.S. Army Cadet Command.”

These 1,700 units are not only located in the U.S.A.; they are also in Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, and American Samoa. Less than 5% (well under one out of 20) of these units qualified to receive the HUD designation this year – only

48 Army JROTC units, including Excel High’s JROTC, were designated as HUD, out of the total of 1,700 units worldwide.

During our interview with the JROTC unit and the staff at Excel High School, Headmaster Mrs. Renee McCall and Col. Anthony Hinson (USA, Ret.) expressed their great satisfaction that the “Knights Battalion” received HUD recognition. The formal military orders conferring the HUD designation, which are usually quite formal, stated, “ … for maintaining exceptionally high standards of performance in all areas of the (Excel JROTC) program … “.

Col. Hinson is a member of the faculty at Excel High School. He serves as its Senior Army Instructor. Luis Pires, an Excel student, is the JROTC unit’s Battalion Commander. The training and curriculum is very challenging, to say the least – it is “a self-development program in a military framework”, with four days per week of classroom instruction, a leadership laboratory, and physical training (one day a week). Uniforms are required. Excel’s JROTC has ten stated goals that include leadership, physical conditioning and the importance of U.S. citizenship. Thirteen courses are taught in Excel’s JROTC, such as American military history, effective communication, map reading, and marksmanship.

Mickey Perkins’ 100th

T

he Year of 2018 has been rema rk able for its multitude of key anniversaries – important historic anniversaries that include the occupation of Boston in Revolutionary times – in 1768, 250 years ago - and the first Memorial Day (Called Decoration Day) in 1868, 150 years ago. Soon, the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day that ended World War I (so called “The War to End All Wars”) will approach us on November 11.

But before that, on this coming October 19-20 and led by the members of the American Legion’s Michael J. Perkins Post No. 67, South Boston will observe the Centennial of the death of Michael J. “Mickey” Perkins in World War I. Perkins was a South Boston hero and Medal of Honor recipient. Whether you are a Southie newcomer or a born-andbrought-upper, please plan to join us for two great Southie “times” on Friday evening and Saturday mor n i ng , Oc tober 19 -20.

On the evening of Friday the 19th, the Perkins Post is throwing a gala Southie “time” at Florian Hall, 55 Hallett Street in Dorchester (just off Gallivan Boulevard, plenty of parking is available). Residents of the South Shore on the “Irish Riviera”, who once lived in South Boston, are welcome, as are all the Perkins Post’s neighbors – old timers

and newcomers, veterans and non-veterans, The “time” – a real Centennial event – starts at 6:30, and includes drinks, music, dancing, and raff les.

Tickets are $20; raff le costs will vary. All proceeds from this Southie “time” will be used to benef it the Perkins Post, which began its existence as a true, old-fashioned fire station with horse-drawn fire wagons back in the day. Specifically, funds raised by the 100th Anniversary “time” in honor of Mickey Perkins’ heroic life will be used for the upkeep of the Perkins Post building, along with defraying the expenses of annual Commemoration activities – f lags, rentals, wreaths, and so on.

The Post itself was converted to a function hall (it still is!) back in the 1930s, as a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project during the Mayoralty of James Michael Curley, the City of Boston’s “Purple Shamrock ”.

Saturday’s Road Race – the 20th at 9 a.m. - is a 5K/3.3 mile contest. The race begins and ends at the Perkins obelisk by the Vietnam Memorial in Medal of Honor/M Street Park. It will loop to, and go clockwise around, Pleasure Bay and then it will return to the obelisk. You can register the morning of the race.

a German machine gun squad in a concrete pillbox pinned his platoon down. Armed with only a hand grenade and a trench knife, Perkins charged across his front line and blew the armored door off the pill box, killing several of the men inside. He forced the remaining German soldiers to surrender at knifepoint, thus putting seven machine guns out

of action. Perkins was wounded in this action. On his way to the hospital, an artillery shell wounded him far more severely.

He died from these later wounds at the hospital. As much as this bravery may sound like a “story”, the facts were confirmed in the investigation that led to Perkins being awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.

Harry’s long-time friend Jack Hart emceed the Bandstand Dedication program last Saturday. Jack intoned his classic rhyme, “Why spend a week In Martinique,When you can spend a day On Pleasure Bay?”And followed by describing Harry with a quote by Mother Teresa, “We can’t all do big things, but we all can do many small things.”

Father Casey gave an invocation that opened the dedication. DCR Commissioner Leo Roy explained the volunteerbased operations of the state’s parks and congratulated Harry.

Sen. Nick Collins read A Senate citation to Harry and then presented it to him. City Councilor-at-Large Michael Flaherty reflected upon the Harry Uhlman Bandstand being now suitable for weddings, confirmations, and so on. Jack Hart intervened to have the crowd sing “Happy Birthday” – Harry had recently turned 86.

City Councilor Ed Flynn complimented Harry on his “great job” with the Special Kids, and thanked Harry “with respect”. Jack Hart recognized “Mr. President” Bill Bulger.

Jack then mentioned that Doughboy Doughnuts supplied refreshments, and that Norm Crump will be creating an oil of the Harry Uhlman Bandstand.

The Hon. Ray Flynn, serving as an informal keynote speaker, reminisced about Harry’s efforts from as far back as the 1950s. Harry himself then rose to speak – receiving spontaneous standing ovations at either end of his heartfelt remarks. “I love the people of Southie”, he began. He included memories of St. Coletta’s, where Special Kids became, well, special – very

special, as well as a lifetime of helping others, like gaining a health plan as an Edison employee in labor/management negotiations. Would you believe that Harry spent most of his remarks giving credit to others? Well, he certainly did.

Harry’s plaque, with his photo portrait, was unveiled. It was quite a program Mere words fail to describe that true community spirit Harry possesses, even from a wordsmith shop like South Boston Online. So, we’ll just conclude by quoting the words inscribed on the plaque that adorns the Harry Uhlman Bandstand from now on, until forever: Dedicated to Harry Uhlman, September 29, 2018.

“In Recognition and Sincere Appreciation for Your Devotion, Dedication and Friendship, We Honor You for Your Tireless Support and Commitment to the South Boston Special Kids and Young Adults, and the Entire Community.”Very nicely and simply spoken - that captures Harry Uhlman as he really is.

Councilors Flynn, Flaherty & Edwards Call For Disability Access Hearing Boston City Councilors Ed Flynn, Michael Flaherty and Lydia Edwards called for a hearing this week to discuss services available to residents with disabilities and those offered through the Mayor’s Commission for Persons with Disabilities. The Councilors seek to examine new ways to support the agency’s mission by improving access, removing any potential barriers in our city and providing equal opportunity for all.

“I’d like to thank Mayor Walsh & Commissioner McCosh for their leadership and work on behalf of persons with disabilities.

I was fortunate to be with so many friends & advocates on the 28th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in July. I also attended the recent Abilities Expo at the BCEC,” said Flynn.

“So many people are doing great work with the disabled community in our city & state; whether it be Harry Uhlman & all the volunteers with the South Boston Special Kids

& Young Adults, the Braintree American Challenger Baseball League & Teamsters Local 25 Autism Fund, and Simon of Cyrene assisting those with mental health and physical challenges.

They’ve inspired me to take a look and see if there are other ways we can meet our responsibilities to improve access and equity for all.”

Councilor Flaherty said,” As we respond to the City’s aging population and ongoing updates to Boston’s infrastructure,

it is absolutely vital to have a legislative response that ensures that these changes are facilitating full and equal participation in all aspects of life within the City for people with disabilities.”

“Every person, regardless of how they navigate the world, should feel like they belong in our city and that they have equal access to opportunity,” said Councilor Edwards, who serves as a board member for the Boston Center for Independent Living.

East Boston Savings Bank 5K Charity

By Richard Campbell The East Boston Savings Bank Charitable Foundation 5K Run / Walk went off without a hitch in near perfect fall weather on this past Sunday, September 30th with hundreds of runners earning $80,000 for the charity.

The running course went the length of Day Boulevard from Carson Beach to Castle Island and back. Participants of all ages from 18 and under to over 60 walked and ran to celebrate fitness and raise funds for the cause.

After the race East Boston Bank Vice President Edward Merritt as the MC bantered cleverly with the kids who were waiting anxiously for their medals. The Charitable Foundation has been serving the community since 1998 and has distributed over 5.5 million in funds for causes focused upon youth development, educational and social services.

The bank has three branches in South Boston and its staff has been seen at many local events lending a hand. Hats off to East Boston Savings Bank for a great event!

A Friendly (but Artistic) Tip …

There are three really superb exhibitions in Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts (the MFA) right now: The first and most carefully produced is called “Casanova’s Europe” – art, pleasure, and power in the 18th Century - is literally a “staged” exhibition, with copious historic notes about the century when the High Renaissance morphed into the Age of Reason. It’s not just a gorgeous spectacle. Be informed: It’s risqué (to say the least). The second – a rarity called “French Pastels” – is a display of pastels by superb artists (and sketchers) from the 1800s. The show is a “rarity”, because pastels and their paper substrates fade and crack in the full light. They can only be displayed once every ten years or so. Pastels are a combination of chalk and crayons – get your children to make their own.

The third exhibit, “Winnie-thePooh”, is for the kids. It features that imaginative illustrator, E.M. Shepard, who created “Winnie-the-Pooh” drawings for author A.A. Milne. The whole family will love this exhibit.

The MFA is alive and well.

Dockings on Reserved Channel The Reserved Channel, from the Flynn Terminal to the Black Falcon to the Conley Yard, was busy last week. It’s sometimes easy to forget that South Boston is a maritime community for many reasons, which include a bustling freight yard with the fastest container turnaround in the country (just over 30 minutes) and dockage for thousands of passengers – three cruise shiploads, led recently by the ginormous “Royal Princess”, of the Princess Lines.

Councilor Flynn Discusses Pedestrian Safety With Neighborhood Associations

Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn recently met with both the West Broadway Neighborhood Association and Cityside Neighborhood Associations to discuss safety for all on our roads - pedestrians, motorists and cyclists. Flynn discussed his recent 12 Point Safe Streets Plan to help calm traffic in South Boston. In addition, he informed residents that he and Councilor Frank Baker will hold an upcoming hearing on the merits of lowering the speed limit to 20 MPH in Boston, or designated areas that include senior centers and recreational facilities.

“This is a top issue for our district and the city. We have to do all we can to make our roads safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. It is my firm belief that a combination of infrastructure changes to our built environment and lower speeds will help to improve safety,” said Flynn.”

I will continue to work with the Boston Transportation Department and advocate for 4 way stop signs, speed humps, raised crosswalks, road diets to narrow streets and encourage slower driving, bumping out curbs for shorter crosswalks, rapid flash beacons or blinking pedestrian crossing signs, speed feedback boards, and consistent enforcement.”

For those students enrolling in 1st or 2nd grade for the first time who were not baptized in either St. Brigid or Gate of Heaven Church, please provide a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate.

Please note that first grade parents should enroll their children in the First Grade Program in order for their child to receive their sacrament of First Holy Communion in the Second Grade Program in 2020. We have wonderful programs for children in Kindergarten thru to Grade 6.

Class time is Sunday mornings from 9 to 10:15AM at South Boston Catholic Academy at 866 East Broadway. Our next classes will be held on Sunday morning, October 14, 2018. The children must attend the 10:30AM Mass following class. We encourage parents/ guardians to attend 10:30AM Mass following class with your child as a family.
