Councilor Flynn Pedestrian Safety Update

oston City Councilor Ed Flynn announced this week that the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) has recently installed blinking pedestrian crossing signs, or rapid flash beacons, to improve pedestrian safety on East and West Broadway. They are located on East Broadway near Stop & Shop and Walgreen’s, and at F St & West Broadway by the South Boston Community Health Center. Speed feedback boards have also been placed by the courthouse on East Broadway, and on Dorchester St

Boston’s City Councilors have to be in direct contact with their constituents as much as (or more than) any other elected or appointed officials in our City. new report finds that lung injuries in those who suffered vapingrelated illnesses resemble damage in those exposed to harmful gases or chemical spills. Looking at biopsies from 17 patients, researchers found signs of inflammation of the lungs — known as pneumonitis — and damage to the airway and lung tissue.

And although the report didn’t offer clues as to which chemicals might be responsible, it did seem to refute earlier evidence that inhalation of fats may be to blame. But in keeping with a report last week that found many of those who became sick vaped THC, 70% of the patients in the new study reported vaping the marijuana compound.e risks of Juul The 16-year-old was seriously sick. She’s one of the 805 patients across the U.S. with vaping-related lung injury, at least 12 of whom have died. But when Dr. Melodi Pirzada

asked her about quitting, the response was a surprise. “She said, ‘OK, the THC, that is fine, but the nicotine — I really love the feeling that I get with it. I don’t know if I’m ready to give that up,’” Pirzada recalled. As anxiety about these pneumonia-like symptoms has grown, more and more teens are thinking about kicking their e-cigarette habits. Yet even as states consider restricting the sale of vaping products, getting rid of a nicotine addiction is easier said than done.

oston has always been known as a strong city.

A lot of our strength comes from our older residents, who represent a broad diversity of cultures and backgrounds, and who helped to make our city what it is today.

That’s why we recently changed the name of the Elderly Commission to the Age Strong Commission. It better reflects the work we do, and the strong Bostonians we serve.

We also launched the City’s firstever Age Strong public awareness campaign. It’s an effort to combat negative stereotypes about aging, and highlight some of the incredible older adults showing what it means to age strong in our neighborhoods.

Older adults are one of our fastest-growing populations.

In 2010, there were more than

88,000 residents over the age of 60 living in Boston. By 2030, this number is expected to exceed 130,000. As our population changes, the way we think and talk about aging should, too.

We have all heard negative and inaccurate messaging about aging. In Boston, we are confronting harmful labels like senile, inactive, helpless, and frail. These words don’t accurately describe Boston’s older adults, so we decided to combat these stereotypes by highlighting the positive, empowering side of aging through a bold public awareness campaign.

This fall, you will see the faces and stories of older Bostonians displayed on bus shelters, at City Hall, in our libraries, and on social media. This campaign features older adults from throughout Boston’s neighborhoods, including Sandra

Harris, 68; Irene Morey, 103; Harry Pierre, 67; Vinny Marino, 83; Leo Romero, 84; Judy Yee, 70; Smiler Haynes, 86; and Rob Quinn, 59.

These Bostonians have great stories to tell and important messages to share.

This is what I know about older Bostonians: they are leaders, changemakers, and problem solvers. They start trends and fight for causes they care about. Older residents contribute a lot to their communities, their families, and our city as a whole, and we are grateful for their energy and experience.

In Defense of the Defense – Part Two This is (admittedly) a follow-up to last week’s (OCT 03) article having the same headline. But the remarkable, record-setting Patriots defense, especially compared to a somewhat inconsistent offense and wavering special teams, is worth further comment.

Flaherty’s name was drawn for the coveted first spot on the ballot in a public ballot drawing held by the City of Boston’s Elections Department. The ballot drawing, which was held on Thursday, October 8, 2019 at 11:00a.m. at City Hall, set the stage for the citywide general election scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2019. Councilor Flaherty, who is seeking another term as a Boston City Councilor At-Large, had a strong showing of results in field of 15 candidates leading into the preliminary election and thus securing a spot for the general election.

I

t’s not that the Washington Redskins were much of an opponent. They weren’t!

But the Patriots’ defense was still highly notable. A succession of broken tackles allowed the ‘Skins to score an early touchdown and take a brief lead, 7-0, over the Pats. That was only the first time the Pats have trailed so far this season. But all you had to do was watch the Pats’ defense huddle around the bench after the ‘Skins TD, and you knew that defensive lapse would not be repeated.

And it wasn’t. The game ended at 33-7, after the Patriots’ of fense bega n to f unction in the second half. But the real news was the defense’s performance, which continued all through the fifth game of their 16-game regular season.

So far, the Patriots have allowed their opponents to score only 34 points in total – just short of seven (7) points per game. But 14 of those 34 points occurred during the game against the Jets, when a pass interception and a dropped punt allowed the Jets to score twice, followed by two points-after. In other words, the Pats’ defense allowed no points in that game – all of the scoring by the Jets was because of mistakes when the Pats’ offense or special teams were on the field.

If you count the points

actually allowed by the Patriots defense, they add up to only 18 points – two touchdowns at six (6) points each, and two field goals at three (3) points each. Since opposing points-after conversions are almost dead certain, and really belong to special teams, South Boston Online isn’t counting them against (or for) the defense. Yes, just 18 points were actually allowed by our defense in five games. That’s less than four (4) points per game.

Equally as remarkable, the Patriots’ defense has scored 18 points of its own – two pass interceptions returned for TD’s – twelve (12) points – and a blocked punt ran in for six (6) points. Looking at it this way, our defense has, in effect, totaled zero (0) points: just 18 allowed versus 18 scored. Outstanding!

If you have watched the huge number of interceptions so far, as well as the sacks against Washington – led by that megaat h let ic linebacker Dont’a Hightower – you will have seen what the real excitement on the Patriots is all about. It’s the Patriots’ defense, which is on track to smash defensive records in this regular season.

Sure, the Patriots’ offense has scored 155 total points in its five games. That’s good.

And no, the NFL “iron” doesn’t really show up against the Patriots until November. But the team is 5-ZIP. This is going to be the year of the “D”.

ften, our lives travel in what appear to be straight lines. Certainly, there are short and long detours that range from a few weeks of vacation up to a few years away at school. But usually we imagine our lives proceeding straight ahead. South Boston Online’s business story this week is just the opposite – a skilled service career that has traveled in a complete circle.

It’s quite possible you have met or crossed paths with Dyan LaRosa.

You have almost certainly passed by her successful beauty businesses on Dorchester Street, along East Broadway, and in the Neponset section of Dorchester. Dyan LaRosa has gone on to open two more shops. Her first was located on Neponset Avenue, near the circle in Dorchester; the second was here at K and East Broadway. Both of them were named “The Beauty Bar”. This August, 2019, Dyan sold The Beauty Bar. According to her, “It was the right time, simply the right time”. Running a business while working as one of its most skilled professionals is both challenging and time-consuming.

And now the circle has been fully closed. Completely! Dyan is once again working as an Independent Contractor in Headquarters at 545 East Broadway at the top of the hill. She began there in August; she works Wednesdays (11 to 7), Thursdays (10 to 7), Fridays (8 to 6), and every other Saturday (8 to 4). Call her for an appointment at 617-269-0085.

When we asked Dyan why she is still working, she replied, “Because I want to spend my time doing what I love.” Nicely spoken, Dyan.

RECOMMENDED: Saturday Afternoon at The Lawn on D

by Rick Winterson It’s often called South Boston’s Playground. Or it’s referred to as a Playground for the Whole Family.

And these sayings are both right. South Boston Online made no particular count of any kind, but last Saturday, The Lawn on D contained a thorough mix of all ages and kinds of players, brought out by cool, brilliantly sunny weather. And by outdoor activities, entertainment, and food and drink.

Perhaps the favorite item(s) at The Lawn on D are their unique crescent swings. A swinger can curl up in the swing’s crescent moon-shaped semicircle and sway seemingly forever. At almost all times, there are lines awaiting one of the swings to become available.

We don’t know if such swings are installed elsewhere, but we haven’t seen anything similar around here.

There were ping pong tables, and giant chess games with kings and queens around two feet tall. Several beanbag games, inelegantly entitled “Cornhole”, lined the Lawn around

the swings. Another game using colored discs in a vertical matrix board was totally unknown to us. The players, although apparently enjoying themselves, didn’t seem to know what was going on either. Oh, well.

Seasonal activities included pumpkin carving. And the autumn hydrangeas had turned their fall colors. Many visitors to the Lawn just sat and read.

The Thomas Park Band needs no introduction. This cover band is perhaps the most popular in South Boston, and they provided hours of afternoon/early evening entertainment in the Lawn’s tent last Saturday. Leo Stapleton sat in for one song. Younger audience members – between three and six or so – danced.

The concessions, ranging from

popcorn to alcoholic beverages, did a brisk business. However, the dining place of choice, at least for a dinner hour, was Amrhein’s. It’s only about a ten-minute walk from The Lawn on D and who knows how much longer you’ll be able to eat there (it’s been sold). The crumbencrusted haddock, with mashed and broccoli, was especially good.

n Friday morning, October 4, the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the children, families and friends of South Boston Catholic Academy had a chance to bring their lovable family pets to be blessed in honor of St. Francis, who had a great love and care for all God’s people, animals and the environment.

Father Casey, our Pastor at Gate of Heaven, St. Brigid Parishes and

St. Augustine Chapel along with Father Peter DeFazio, the Pastor of St. Peter, St. Monica and St. Vincent DePaul Parishes blessed all the dog, cats, bunnies, etc… that came to be blessed. This was followed by our school Mass at St. Brigid Church honoring St. Francis’s Feast Day at which Father Peter DeFazio was the celebrated, our sixth graders and our children’s choir did wonderful job participating at this Mass.

“Yasgur’s Farm: Hunger in America”

M

ulti-media artist A nnee Spileos Scott, who is now exhibiting her work at Spoke Gallery (110 K Street, second f loor), has had many accomplishments and events in her life. One of those she remembers most vividly was the Woodstock Festival 50 years ago, in 1969. Woodstock’s golden anniversary and hemi-centennial inspired Annee to create a strikingly vivid installation, which she ca lls “Yasgur’s Farm: Hunger in America”.

The root of this title comes from the actual location of the Woodstock Festival – Bethel, New York, about 40 miles to the west-southwest of Woodstock.

Specifically, the Festival took place on the hillsides around Yasgur’s Farm. The Festival was certainly a pivotal event in American rock, folk, and popular music. But in addition to the joys of introducing the musical icons-to-be of the 1970s, the Woodstock Festival experienced drenching rains and a food shortage. The crowds had quickly consumed the vendors’ supplies, “and then there were none!”. The community of Bethel quickly got together and organized an

These illustrate the hundreds of millions of pounds and the thousands of tons of things to eat given to the hungry by the American people - the U.S. has 234 food banks nationwide.

NO Aerosol Cans No Food NO Liquids NO Styrofoam NO Foil Tops NO Materials That Can Cause Tangles (cables, hoses, chains, etc.)
