As Always, It’s Important. PLEASE VOTE!
lease vote next Tuesday, November 5, at your own polling place, which will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Actually, voting when there are 13 hours of open polls is reasonably convenient. So make use of your power to vote. And one reason it’s important for you to use this power is that your individual vote can make a real impact on who gets elected. This year’s election is a race for seats on Boston’s City Council. All four City Councilor-at-Large seats are open. In the September 24 Primary races for these seats, one of the successful candidates came in only 227 votes ahead of the next candidate. That’s not very much. And elsewhere on the ticket, there was a gap of only 108 votes between two of the other at-Large candidates. Yes, those are slim margins. Your vote can and will count. Here in South Boston, Ed Flynn, our District 2 City Councilor, and Frank Baker from District 3, who represents the two South Boston precincts south of Andrew Square, are running unopposed.
But the four Boston City Councilorat-Large seats are all up for grabs; this will be a (very) tight race. The four incumbents in these seats are Flaherty, Wu, Essaibi-George, and Garrison. They are all campaigning for reelection. The Primary Election qualified four vote-getting newcomers as well – St. Guillen, Mejia, Murphy, and Halbert. It is among these eight candidates where your vote could be critically important. Please don’t neglect to cast it on November 5. You’ll be voting for those City of Boston elected officials who are most directly concerned with your well-being and your position on a multitude of issues. Boston’s 13 City Councilors, both our nine (9) District Councilors and our four (4) Councilors-at-Large, make up our political “front line”. They are the elected officials who speak to us most directly, who walk our streets with their feet always on the ground – on local turf. Cast your vote according to your position on the issues in the City and in South Boston. You already know that

affordable housing is a key Boston issue. So aren’t the opioid crisis and other forms of substance abuse around here. Public transport and local traffic problems need much devoted political attention. With South Boston’s lengthy (and beautiful)
shoreline, our elected officials must even become more concerned about global warming and sea level rise. Vote for the City Councilor-at-Large who shares your concerns about the important issues.
Happy Halloween
Yes, it was quite a Halloween event last Saturday, the 26th. The ever-present threat of rain, condensed the Al l Hallow’s Eve celebrations into one day, the Spooktacular event was moved to Saturday, and large crowds descended upon last Saturday’s “Haunted Castle” in Fort Independence at Castle Island.
