Recovery Month in South Boston
by Rick Winterson
S
eptember is Recovery Month in America – recover y from substance abuse (drugs, alcohol, prescription medicines, whatever)! It’s also Recovery Month here in South Boston. During the first week of September, 2019, which began a week ago last Sunday, many local and national events took place. South Boston Online has chosen to write up just two of these events and happenings. One was a massive “Health, Wellness, and Recovery Rally” held on a Seaport District construction site on Wednesday morning, September 4. The other “happening” was very simple – a set of silent messages about tragic, fatal overdoses, printed in chalk on South Boston’s sidewalks. The opioid deaths are from illegal heroin and fentanyl. Many more deaths result from use and abuse of other drugs, medicines, tobacco, and alcohol. The September 4 “Health, Wellness, and Recovery Rally” took place at 450 Summer Street, on the John Moriarty & Associates construction site. Some 19 building trades unions joined with Moriarty, forming a partnership in pursuit of health, wellness and recovery for all their members and workers. The event was a very impressive step in the first recoveryfriendly construction site program, launched by Moriarty in June. Note that all 19 of the unions that took part
