Charlie Baker for Governor When making our endorsement for the 2014 Massachusetts Gubernatorial Election, Charlie Baker was the obvious choice. Let’s face it - we live in one of the most Democratic states in the country; which is by no means a bad thing. But as we’ve seen in the past, Beacon Hill runs much more smoothly and efficiently with cooperative, bi-partisan leadership. Charlie Baker is not your average Republican. He supports marriage equality and a woman’s right to choose. He has vowed to reform a convoluted and confusing state tax code that seems to benefit special interests at the cost of workers and small businesses. And he notably worked in the health and human services industry as the CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care - where he was able to turn a company facing bankruptcy into one of the top health plans in the country. Baker has promised to reform the Commonwealth’s broken welfare system by stopping what has become rampant abuse and helping people get back to work so that they can achieve their own economic independence. He has vowed not to increase taxes and to make all Beacon Hill lawmakers more accountable to their constituents. And as an expert in the health care field, who better to help stem the rising cost of health care as we’ve seen health insurance premiums in Massachusetts continue to rise across the board. Every candidate’s pledges sound great in principle, but we believe that Charlie Baker can deliver. While Republicans and Democrats on the national level can’t seem to agree on much of anything these days, Charlie Baker has experience reaching across the aisle to get things done. While serving as the Secretary of Administration and Finance under former Republican Governors Bill Weld and Paul Cellucci, Baker helped turn a billion-dollar deficit into a surplus while creating a half a million jobs and championing education reform – all while working with a majority Democratic State Legislature. At the end of the day, electing a governor is akin to choosing a CEO. Governors, like CEOs, need to be fiscally responsible to be successful and they need to put the best people in the best positions to make the tough calls that affect us all on a daily basis. Charlie Baker has proven that he can bail out a sinking ship – and while Beacon Hill may not be completely under water just yet, it’s certainly sprung more than a few leaks in the past eight years. So we ask that you please consider voting for Charlie Baker on Tuesday, November 4.
