T

he idea of intravenous vita min t herapy bec a me popu la r in 2012 with raves coming from Hollywood celebrities like Rihanna and Adele. How is that the idea of being stuck with a needle in an unregulated walk-in clinic and run by for profit companies has been turned into a wellness must for those with disposable incomes?

These clinics boast everything from a cure for jetlag and hangovers, to healthier skin, improving your immune system and sex life. Why are so many Americans seeking chemical answers for distress? Is your life here in the richest country in the world becoming more stressful nd traumatic? How is it that people from other countries

are desperate to come to the US for prosperity, safety security and some sense of orderliness. We have so many things at our fingertips while people elsewhere struggle to survive from childhood on.

Could our overall access and ease itself be the reason we have become so self-absorbed in the disappointments, and everyday annoyances that we must chemically sedate ourselves in such a way that we do not have to feel anything unpleasant…. and yet those unpleasant feeling keep creeping in. We are not happy, we have taken things for granted and we cannot tolerate any distress hence this new scam to alleviate our sense of aloneness.

Kardashians to help us find peace?

How is it that we who have all the best foods in the world at our disposal think that we need to go to one of these drip bars for IV vitamin therapy?

The risks associated with such enterprises are not minor.

Inserting a needle into a vein can cause inflammation, infection and blood clots. Potassium infusions can impact cardiac function.

Excessive levels of vitamins can be hard on the organs and should be avoided.

Fluid overload can affect electrolyte balance and damage kidney, brain and heart. Do you even know what

is being infused other than what the nurse is telling you?

If you choose to go to one of these IV therapy clinics find out who is the medical director and is and is, he or she on site. Are the people at the clinic taking a full medical history? Do they ask you what outside medications are you taking including over the counter medications, alcohol/and other drugs and dietary supplements?

Talk with your primary care provider before you try a drip bar. There are very few studies that have tested the effectiveness of IV vitamin therapies. There is no published evidence to date.

There may, however, be a placebo effect in receiving this type of therapy. Is it such that the more money I spend the better I feel?

The cost is high, and insurance does not cover these treatments.

This type of therapy is NOT risk free and I would like to suggest that we exercise and eat nutriously in order to improve health. The bigger question is how have we become a nation of people living in a chemical haze?

And now, South Boston has “elected” a new Mayor, Ha ley Dillon, who earned that honor by raising a truly astonishing total of more than $17,000, which will be used to support the SBAW VC in their fundraising efforts for the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade.

Haley will lead the Parade on Sunday afternoon, March 17, when it steps off at 1 p.m. from the end of West Broadway by the “T” Station. Last Tuesday evening, her Mayoral campaign win was announced at a party in Roza Lyons, the brasserie at 709 East Broadway. Dave Fa lvey, the Commander of the SBAW VC, performed the honors for Her Honor. There was a thunderous shout of praise from the campaigners, after they heard how well Haley had done.

Dave, AW VC Treasurer Mike Igo, and Parade Intern Sergio Bento performed the count, the recount, another recount, and the final tally.

South Boston Online has used rounded figures to give you an approximation of how well the Mayoral Race campaigners did,

but these of course are subject to audit. But never mind any qualif ications – the amount raised will really contribute to keeping our Parade solvent, on March 17, 2019, and in future years. It bears repeating that all our Parade funds are raised locally, using local fundraising events like the Mayor’s race.

And if you are new to South Boston, please be absolutely assured that every penny of funds raised goes toward the Parade. All of those who do so much to put on a fantastic Parade every year are volunteers . With no compensation whatever.

William “Buddy” Christopher to Receive the Francis “Mickey” Roache Award

T

he South Boston Citizens’Association is pleased to announce the creation of the Francis “Mickey” Roache Award , to be given out at the Annual Evacuation Day Banquet.

“This award will be presented to an individual who is a truly dedicated and committed individual that cares about city government and has contributed so much in their own unique way throughout the city. It is fitting for the Citizens’ Association, and the South Boston community, to honor William “Buddy”Christopher.”

William Christopher Jr. was born in Boston and is a long time resident of the Dorchester area. Christopher, known to family and friends by the nickname “Buddy,” is married to his high school Sweetheart and raised his six children in Savin Hill.

Growing up, Commissioner Christopher moved from South Boston to the Bronx, NY from the4th – 9th grade. At the age of 14, while attending grammar school in New York, an English teacher gave him a book on the life of Antoino Gaudi, a Spanish architect. This is the point when he started taking mechanical drafting and at the age of 15 knew he wanted to become an architect.

Returning to Boston, he graduated from South Boston High School and received his bachelor’s

degree in Architecture from the Boston Architectural Center and attended a Career Discovery Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He is a registered architect in the state of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. He is also a national key member of National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB).

Christopher worked for the City of Boston in the 1990s as an Assistant Director for Architecture and Engineering in the Department of Neighborhood Development.

He is also one of the founders of Roche-Christopher Architecture LLC, located in Dorchester, MA. With over 30years of experience in architectural design, Commissioner Christopher’s work in the past Includes the McLaughlin Center for the Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester, City of Boston Uphams Corner Municipal Building, Church of Boston at 1299 Massachusetts Ave, the League School in Walpole, MA, and on other various projects located throughout the North East. He has also used his professional skills to help numerous families and non-profit organizations throughout Greater Boston by providing pro bono services to those in need. As a longtime resident of Savin Hill, Christopher has been an active member of his community over the years in various ways, from serving as a soccer

As the Building Commissioner of Boston, Christopher has transformed one of the most important and complex difficult agencies in the city by focusing on changing the culture

of the organization and using new technology to better serve the residents of Boston. Every week, Commissioner Christopher is out at community meetings talking to residents about the Agency and engaging community members. He leads by the idea that his agency is there to serve the people and businesses of the City, and he has an open door policy for his employees and all residents of Boston.

2019 Paraclete Reception Honors Flynn Family

ach year, The Paraclete Academy (”Paraclete” = Spirit, counselor) holds a fundraising event – the Annual Paraclete Reception. Their 2019 Reception was held last Thursday evening, February 28, at Boston College High School on Morrissey Boulevard. The Reception Chair was City Councilor Ed Flynn; Paraclete Executive Director Eileen MacNeil charmingly emceed the event. Grace Cotter Regan gave the opening remarks. Paraclete Principal Melissa Maladore was recognized for her work, as were the teachers – art teacher Susan Entin, Jill Hennessey, Kim Sun, Will McDonald, and Molly Zollo-Venecek.

Cardinal Sean O’Malley graced the Paraclete Reception with his presence and his welcoming words. Both Paraclete’s co-Founders, Sr. Ann Fox and Barry Hynes, were on hand. Elected

There isn’t any question that many in attendance came to see Ambassador & Mrs. Flynn and Family receive the 2019 Paraclete Annual Founders Award, established and named for Barry Hynes and Sr. Ann Fox. They would be the first to deny this, but if there is a “First Family” in South Boston, it would have

to be Ray, Cathy, and their children and grandchildren. And their 2019 Founders Award was ushered in to the stirring music of the Boston Police Department’s Gaelic Column of Pipes & Drums.

Ray delivered his remarks after the Founders Award was formally bestowed upon the Flynn Family. We understand that Ray had taken the trouble to prepare some remarks, but became aware as he took the lectern that impromptu words from his heart were far more appropriate. And Ray was overcome at

times with his own emotions. He stated he could only give a brief recognition of everything in his heart. He went on to say that “he wanted us to know that whatever he did was not only for his kids and grandchildren, but also for the future of the country”. Throughout his remarks, Ray continuously referred to the many key roles his wife Cathy played in everything he and the Flynn family did. His speech was truly sincere and memorable. It ended with a well-deserved standing ovation from the crowd.

SBANP: Update

I

n our February 14 issue of South Boston Online, we published an article updating you on the SBANP, which is a local, 30-member group of non-profit organizations It was chaired by SBANP co-Presidents Anna White (of the MOMS Club) and Kathy Lafferty (of the Neighborhood House). Years ago, they banded together to enhance their abilities to benefit the South Boston community. As such, SBANP is a unique “organization of organizations”, the like of which is not found elsewhere else in the City or the Commonwealth. And perhaps not in the entire nation.

We wrote up SBA NP’s plans for taking part in the St. Patrick ’s/Evacuation Day Parade, marching under a “We Are South Boston” banner.

Bob Monahan, E.D. of Julie’s Family Learning Program, is on a Parade committee and led this discussion. There was a briefing

by BPD’s Community Services on Station C-6 enforcement actions and Parade behavior.

It has since been decided that the Parade will end in Andrew Square, as it had in the past.

The last half hour of last month’s SBANP meeting dealt with current projects and future plans. To give this part of the SBANP meeting enough space, we decided to publish a second article about the SBANP organization’s February meeting.

We will attempt to summarize their many activities as coherently as possible.

As just one example, the South Boston Community Health Center will host SBANP’s March meeting. The Health Center will disclose and discuss expanding

their local services, especially those needed for providing proper emergenc y he a lt h services, where quick timing of treatment is essential. That will mean expansion of the Health Center into adjoining buildings along Broadway. Good news!

For another example, Anna White of South Boston’s MOMS Club gave us a roster of their activities in 2018. Their 325 members enjoyed the ninth Family Fun Day (FFD) on June 2, 2018; the 2019 FFD # 10 will take place on June 1 this year. Other of their services include “Parents on the Town” – providing a much-welcomed social break for parents. The MOMS members’ community good works also include providing warm winter coats, baby goods, and school supplies wherever needed.

She was on the committee that planned fundraisers and helped organize a trip for the veterans of the Fitzgerald, Saunders and McDonough to travel to Washington DC. She went along and she loved listening to the stories of the “greatest generation” and sang a patriotic or favorite Irish song or two with them!

You may have met Ellen as a volunteer at the Gate of Heaven CYO Annual Fundraiser, helping her Uncle Bill Touchie McDonough checking in guests and organizing the raffles. Ellen does a great job organizing and assisting with this event.

If you are a teen or parent at St Brigid or Gate of Heaven, you may have met Ellen at a Confirmation class as she has taught for 9 years and is now the program coordinator. She is a spiritual advisor to many kids and beloved by many. A graduate of Boston Latin School, Ellen has volunteered her time and gone back to Latin to discuss careers in public service to the new students. After Latin, Ellen went on to graduate from Harvard University.

Ellen’s family legacy continues… her grandfather and her father, Jack would be very proud!

Ellen is what this community is all about, Giving back to others without hesitation.”McGrath said.

Bob O’Shea is one of those South Bostonians who always puts others first. Bob has been in public service for many years acting as a liaison to the state for the Big Dig and currently as the Community Liaison for the MCCA and BCEC. This is a role Bob has taken very seriously over the years working with the South Boston Community Development Fund and creating new programs to ensure that the community shares

in the convention centers success.

He created the CARE program which, when appropriate diverts excess goods and products from vendors at conventions directly to members of our community who are in need.

He has also developed a partnership with Madison Park High School, creating internships for our high school culinary arts students. “For these reasons accompanied with his stellar performance engaging the community and addressing its concerned, I believe he is most deserving for the Shamrock Community service award. He has a lifetime of giving back to the South Boston community and his recognition is long overdue.” Stated McGrath Beyond his work life, Bob has dedicated countless hours contributing to the South Boston community. He has coached youth sports including baseball and pop warner for over a decade. He always answers the call when civic volunteers are needed, like serving on design advisory committees. Bob over the years has quietly helped our young people to enter the workforce and helped our youth suffering from addiction.

It gives me great pleasure to announce these awards,” said McGrath. “These are truly dedicated and committed individuals who have contributed so much in their own unique ways. It is fitting for the Citizens’ Association, and the South Boston community, to honor these individuals.

2019 Parade Chief Marshal’s Banquet Scores

ach year, South Boston’s Allied War Vetera ns Council (the SBAW VC, for short) organizes the Annual St. Patrick’s/ Evacuation Day Parade. This leads the SBAWVC into many other associated activities during the single fortnight, 15-day “Parade Season”, as it’s sometimes called.

Beside the Parade itself, one of the most important activities is the Annual Parade Chief Marshal’s Banquet. The Banquet this year was held last Saturday evening, the 2nd, in the capacious Boston Teachers Union Hall, Carson Place on Mt. Vernon Street.

Right up front, key credit must be given to 2019 Parade Chief Marshal John Beatty (Lt. Col., USA Ret.) for the success of this year’s Banquet. John is a member of the aforementioned SBAW VC. He organized a highly effective group of people to help with this year’s Banquet, including his ha rdwork ing wife Maureen.

John was the sparkplug for the event.

O ver a l l, t he Ba nque t consisted of a cocktail hour, followed by various ceremonies and the dinner itself, with a speakers’ program and Irish entertainment at the close. A crowd of several hundred filled the tables in the BTU Hall early on – it was obvious from the camaraderie, accompanied by the buzz of conversation and laughter, that the 2019

Banquet would be a success.

The guests were asked to go to their tables, and then to rise for the Presentation of Colors, which was performed by the JROTC detachment from South Boston’s Excel High School. The Color Guard was excellent – “sharp” in the military sense of “effortlessly precise” describes them. South Boston friend and (once) Pastor of St. Vincent’s Father Joe White spoke the Invocation. In a unique tribute to Fallen Soldiers, a small empty table had been put aside with symbolic ware, such as a white tablecloth, an overturned wineglass, a single red rose, a lone lit candle, and a folded black napkin. It was a ver y affecting sight.

The Banquet was centered around corned-beef-and-cabbage, of course (gray meat, with boiled potato, turnip, carrots,

and beets to go along). The Irish bread had raisins (good!) but no caraway (even better!).

A multiple choice, very sweet dessert plus coffee ended the feast Space doesn’t allow South Boston Online to fully describe the Speakers” Program, but it was devoted to veterans’ matters and to Parade-related events.

Some 120 marching units have now been signed up for the Parade. It will end in Andrew Square. There will be a history event in our Branch Library on Saturday afternoon, March 16.

Plan to attend. SBCA President Tommy McGrath got off the best one-liner: “Don’t forget! If you didn’t have Evacuation Day, you wouldn’t have the Fourth.”

SBAW VC Commander Dave Falvey made a special point to recognize his wife for her help on the Parade – she had just

delivered a baby as well. City Councilor Ed Flynn spoke of the difficulties that can confront the families of veterans. And Parade Chief Marshal John Beatt y thanked his wife Maureen, and then spoke eloquently of that special bond of complete camaraderie military personnel develop bet ween themselves.

The program ended on a surprise high note: Ed and Jean Shif lett were recognized for all of their self less devotion over the years to the SBAWVC and to the Parade Chief Marshal’s Banquet.

Superb Irish dancers from the O’Dw yer/ Woods School of Irish Dance then performed for an entranced audience. Top notch Irish music had been performed all evening by Boston’s Erin Og (Boston’s “young Irish”) trio. Once again, the 2019 Banquet was outstanding!

Boston City Councilor At-Large Michael F. Flaherty Files Hearing Order on Year 13 Programming Year-long intensive program should be looked at as a means to close the achievement gap

Boston City Councilor At-Large Michael F. Flaherty has filed a hearing order regarding the feasibility of implementing Year 13 programming in the Boston Public Schools System. Year 13 programming could be utilized as an additional resource to close the achievement gap for our students.

The hearing order comes in response to feedback from residents and other stakeholders in support of the concept of an intensive, year-long focused program that provides additional support to students who may opt into the program before leaving high school. Year 13 provides students with an extra year of high school that allows for students get on track for entrance to four-year colleges, vocational-technical school and/or community college as well. If implemented, Boston would be joining the ranks of many other schools across the country that are building student-centered curriculums and supports that provides all students with opportunities to flourish. Some schools across the country have even partnered with their local colleges for student transition.

“The Boston Public School system is home to over 16,000 high school aged students across, on minimum, twenty high schools throughout the City of Boston,” noted Councilor Flaherty. “Further, as we know, we live in a competitive global economy that requires our students to have equally competitive skills to access and fully participate in this economy. As a result, we need to advocate for innovative solutions to close the achievement gap in our education system. Boston is home to some of the best colleges and universities in the country and there are incredible companies that call and are looking to call Boston home.

Our students deserve to access the opportunities waiting for them in their own backyards, and yet, we’re finding that they’re not.”

The hearing order has been assigned to the City Council’s Committee on Education. Boston City Councilor At-Large Michael F. Flaherty is looking forward to a robust, collaborative discussion about Year 13 as a tool to provide all students with opportunities to succeed in whatever path they decide to pursue. Kick-Off Breakfast Begins 2019 South Boston “Season”

T

here are many ways to begin a true “Season”. A “Season” could simply follow from a change in the weather (good luck with that this Year of 2019!). Or it could be done with the first, formal Opening Day home contest, as Boston’s athletic teams do. Or it could be done as the South Boston Citizens’ Association (the SBCA, for short) has done it for so many years: with the much-anticipated Jimmy Flaherty Kick-Off Breakfast.

Well, 2019 was no exception.

The SBCA held its customary and traditional Kick-Off Breakfast at Seapoint last Saturday morning, March 02. This opened the usual, incredible train of civic events that take place over the next fortnight, and which end with the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade on the fifteenth day after the Kick-Off Breakfast – Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. on March 17. And by itself, the Kick-Off Breakfast was quite the event.

Despite the wintry weather, the Breakfast was well-attended. It opened as usual with Irish music by Bob Fowkes’ Curragh’s Fancy, and then an invocation by old friend Fr. Tom White, followed by a sumptuous breakfast in Tom Connolly’s Seapoint. The Breakfast was emceed

by Michael Donovan, who is the City’s longest serving elected official (43+ years). Most of South Boston’s elected officials were on hand. The atmosphere was quite convivial.

The SBCA at 139 is America’s oldest continuously serving, neighborhood civic organization.

It will hold South Boston’s 139th Annual Evacuation Day Banquet on Friday evening, March 15, at 5:30 p.m. in the Convention Center.

Be sure not to miss it! Rep. David Biele is its General Chairman; he’ll handle the emcee duties with SBCA President Tommy McGrath.

A key part of the Kick-Off Breakfast’s celebration/ceremony is the conferring of the Henry Knox “Unsung Heroes” Awards.

There were three recipients this year – teacher and community activist Allison Baker, Medicine Wheel Artistic Director Michael Dowling, and Fran’s Auto Repair’s master mechanic Fran Dempsey.

Allison was honored because, to quote Tommy McGrath, “She has dedicated more hours to volunteer work at 24 than most people do in a lifetime”. As a girls’ coach at Gatey CYO, she mentored many through the program and garnered two CYO Travel Team state championships. She now works at the Tierney Learning Center; she intends to teach inner city youth.

Artistic Director, has favorably influenced literally thousands of individuals in and around South Boston, many of them young people, by bringing art to the community.

No Man’s Land behind the High School, now a crescent-shaped urban park, is concrete evidence of his efforts, as is the acclaimed, citywide “Hand in Hand” program with the Boston Police Department.

Fran is the owner of Fran’s Auto Repair. He has not only fixed countless mechanical problems with residents’ cars, he has also counseled

(yes, counseled) the owners on proper car care – car care that lowers costs and eliminates future problems. He is living proof of the need our society has for expert craftsmanship. Check Fran out on the Internet if you want to see almost uniformly excellent reviews.

The 2019 Jimmy Flaherty KickOff Breakfast was fittingly ended by an announcement from Bernie O’Donnell about the Farragut Statue’s rededication next Sunday, March 10, at 1 p.m. – please plan to attend this – followed by John Healey’s traditional rendition of “A Mother’s Love”.

Fox & The Knife, A Cut Above

hen you enter Fox & The K n i fe you’re immediately hit with sheer, exuberant, energy. Described as an Italian inspired Enoteca, this neighborhood joint is bursting with persona lit y, with an A my Winehouse meets Julia Child sort of vibe.

From the buzz of the crowd, to the intoxicating aromas, the character of the décor, and the thoughtfully chosen tunes, there’s a pure celebration of the senses, before even sitting down to taste.

With no major structural renovations necessar y, the redesign yields a sleek and cozy, yet edgy space, with one particular improvement that the Maiden lay-out had been screaming for; a six-seat chef ’s table providing a full view of the open kitchen design, for diners to watch Chef Karen Akunowicz wield her culinary magic.

And magic, it is. In her first solo venture, this James Beard-winning chef (and Top Chef alum) aimed to pay homage to her time spent deepening her love for cooking in Modena, Italy, and she more than delivered.

Every aspect of this place seems infused with the story of Chef Karen’s journey, with each element of every dish reflective of her personal style.

As an ode to Modena, an aperitivo hour is offered at 4pm, followed by the dinner menu at 5:30, featuring Tigelle, a type of bread rarely found in the states. Likened to a crumpet or English

muffin, it really is its own delicious creature, with its slightly brown crisp exterior and soft, steamy center, served with a smear of butter and sea salt.

(Akunowicz schlepped the authentic iron to the states from Italy, offering American diners a unique experience).

Further transporting you, the opening menu showcases refreshing takes on classic dishes, highlighting Akunowicz’s masterful pasta-making skills, with soulful dishes like Wild Boar Bolognese. While such elevated comfort foods with luxurious sauces and bold flavors are no surprise from a chef so heavily influenced by Italian cuisine, it’s the nuances of some of the lighter dishes with surprising ingredients that command attention.

Creamy burrata mingles with shreds of fresh bietola topped with crispy shallots for a play of textures, married together with a warm walnut vinaigrette. Lightly browned brussel sprouts are brightened by mint and pickled shallots, while the panzanella salad with pomegranate is as vibrant as the hue of Akunowicz’s pink hair. The favorite was the Special of the night - perfectly seasoned salmon served over Israeli couscous seemingly simmered for centuries in a sumptuous sauce that simply sings.

Adding to the addictive atmosphere is an enthusiastic and welcoming staff, handling the eager crowd of foodies with professionalism and grace. The sprightly bar servers, (seek out Leanneshe’s a force), are all well versed in the impressive wine selection, and quick to pour tastes for the curious.

Spearheaded by general manager / beverage director Alexandra Hayden, the bar program has a focus on aperitifs, amaros and spritzes, with some intriguing twists on classic cocktails, like their show stopping Tarragon Gimlet, or Fox 75 (a play on the French 75, but with blood orange).

A seat at the bar offers the perfect spot to reveal all the thoughtful touches that went into the planning and execution of the already popular brainchild of a Chef with true swag.

Deep purple, velvet covered high top chairs lead to a pink neon sign that reads “Stay Foxy”. Behind it, the chalkboard

wall is accented with a handwritten note professing the Chef’s favorite wine choice. Even the recessed lights are adorned with vintage bulbs. With a playlist that includes Aretha Franklin

and Amy Winehouse (go figure) keeping things sexy at just the right volume, the entire experience does precisely what any spot endeavors to do; makes you hungry to come back again for more.

The stopped subway train and the Transit Police are gathered at the inbound exit in Andrew Square “T” Station. Apparently, for whatever reason, an intruder/trespasser decided to hop off the subway platform and talk a walk up the tracks – third rail and all – last Friday afternoon. South Boston Evacuation Day Free Throw Contest has been postponed at the bcyf Tynan due to weather until Monday March 11th @ 6pm. Which is Sponsored by the South Boston Citizen’s Association.

The Bcyf Tynan Instructional Basketball program for youth ages 5-7yrs. Started a couple of weeks ago with 40 youngsters signed up. This is an 8-week program focusing on the fundamentals of Basketball: Dribbling, Shooting and Passing).

By the end of the season children’s skill development has progressed and are able to participate in scrimmages.

Sully’s Is Open There are many signs of Spring. Almost all of them are unreliable – completely unreliable. That includes various the appearances of hibernating mammals around here, including the groundhog (mammota monax, a.k.a. the woodchuck). South Boston Online won’t even mention the unreliability of the well-known Punxsutawney Phil.

But there is one sign that is truly reliable – the Opening Day of Sullivan’s. It not only precedes the March 20 Equinox, it comes before the Spring frolics in South Boston leading up to the Parade.

Their opening occurred , quite fittingly, on last Friday, the very first day of March.

And if you have a sharp eye for other signs of Spring, you will have probably noticed that flocks of those fat, little blackbirds called starlings are back, roosting on the leafless trees around Pleasure Bay. They’re looking for crumbs and handouts around Sully’s, no doubt. Starlings have black, iridescent feathers, and thin, pointed, bright yellow beaks. And they tweet incessantly (like lots of people we all know).
