SBCA Rededicates Farragut Statue by Rick Winterson
T
he statue of Admiral David Fa rra g ut, located within its circle where Day Boulevard meets East Broadway, was rededicated last Sunday. It is Year No. 125 since the statue had first been originally dedicated. So, a hardy band of South Bostonians gathered in cold rain to place a wreath there, under colors presented by a U.S. Navy Color Guard. The Pledge of Allegiance was spoken; Bryan Bishop led the singing of the National Anthem. The event was sponsored by the SBCA (the South Boston Citizens’ Association). The arrangements were made by SBCA member Bernie O’Donnell, who as the then SBCA President, rededicated the statue on its Centennial in 1993. The Farragut statue was completed, officially accepted as a monument,

and then first dedicated in 1893. The statue’s creator, sculptor Henry Hudson Kitson, also sculpted the Minuteman statue on Lexington Green. The year 1893 was 23 years after Farragut’s death in 1870, and 28 since the end of the Civil War. For a variety of reasons, there was a countrywide desire to memorialize American history, including its historic events, and the heroes who took part in them. Admiral Farragut was certainly one of these. In addition, Farragut was a memorable character in his own right. He served in the U.S. Navy for 60 years, beginning as a nine- or ten-yearold midshipman (yes, he was 9 or 10). He saw combat in the War of 1812, the Mexican/American War, and the Civil War – still the War that has claimed the most American lives. His most famous victory was the Battle of Mobile Bay. He was a seaman to the core as well, whose duties also included the more day-today missions of blockades, stamping out piracy, escorting private vessels, and

All Eyes were smiling at a truly great celebration! Formally named “The 2019 Tom & Eddie Butler St. Patrick’s Senior Salute”, the 2019 Senior Salute was nonstop laughter, fond embraces, and loud conversation. Story and Photos on Page 6
