Farragut Statue to Be Rededicated

mini-park (actually a regularly renewed flower garden) that forms the traffic circle at the point where Day Boulevard crosses the end of East Broadway. A block to the west is Farragut Road, which was a new name conferred upon Q Street back in 1893, on June 28, when the statue was originally dedicated. The statue is of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut USN. He was a career naval officer, renowned nationwide for his heroic naval exploits during the American Civil War (1861 to 1865).

This is the Farragut statue’s 125th year. The statue was rededicated at its century mark in 1993, and the South Boston Citizens’ A ssociation (the SBCA) will rededicate the statue once again this coming May 10, a Sunday, at 1 p.m.

an honor for the Association to present this award to Tommy for his countless contributions to the betterment of South Boston, The Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the United States for well over 50 years.”McGrath said.

graduated from South Boston High in 1967 and served in t he United States Ma rine Corps from 1967-1969 and is a combat Veteran with a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was Corporal in the Marine Corps.

In 1978, he organized a committee of veterans to pay tribute to the 25 young men from his community who were killed in action during the Vietnam War. On September 13, 1981, the South Boston Vietnam Veterans and the South Boston Community dedicated the South Boston Vietnam Memorial, which was one of the first of its kind in the nation.

In 1987, he founded the Semper Fidelis Society of Boston, a Marine Corps organization that holds one of the largest Marine Corps Birthday Celebrations in the country. He serves on several boards and committees: he is a member of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs Advisory C om m it te e on Home le s s Veterans, Chairman of the 2001, 2006 and the 2015 Medal of Honor Society Convention and Chairman of the Massachusetts Veteran and War Memorial Commission. He ser ves on the Board of Trustees for the Chelsea Soldiers Home, a Board Member of the Brighton Marine Health Center and a

member on the Long-Term Care Commission for Veterans.

Tommy lives in Wakefield, Massachusetts with his wife Jean they have two daughters Sarah, Maura and his son, Todd, a Federal Agent in Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) and a Veteran of the Iraq war, lives in West Newbury, Ma.with his wife and son.

This award along with the Shamrock and other awards( will be announced next week) will be presented at the Association’s 139t h A n nu a l Evacu at ion Day Banquet, to be held on Friday evening, March 15 t h , at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. A host of special invited Dignitaries are expected to attend this year’s banquet. Curragh’s Fancy will provide t he enterta inment.

Rededication to attend this rededication In addition to being in its 125th year, the Farragut statue is playing a part in a South Boston history lesson this year.

The SBCA conducts annual Poster and Essay contests in the schools of South Boston. In 2019, the Poster competition (for students in Grades, 3, 4, and 5) is asking for posters about either the Farragut statue or the St. Augustine Chapel on Dorchester Street. For your information, the Chapel is in its 200th year – ground was broken in 1818; the Chapel was opened in 1819.

The essays in Grades 6 through 8 are required to be about the Chapel. Those from Grades 9 through 12 must be about the Farragut Statue. Instructions for entering these contests are on page four (4) of South Boston Online’s Februar y 14 issue.

Ad m ira l Fa rra g ut wa s best known for his victories in the Civil War, especially his recapture of the Lower Mississippi River around New Orleans in 1862 and the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864 (“Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead!”).

He was America’s first Admiral, but perhaps more important, he was staunchly loyal to the Union during the entire Civil War, even though he was raised in Tennessee and lived in Virginia, integral parts of the Confederacy.

There are other interesting facts about the Farragut Statue. It was designed and created by Henry Hudson Kitson, the same sculptor who created the truly iconic Minuteman Statue on the Lexington Green. But believe it or not, Farragut never was stationed in (nor lived in) Boston.

memorials. South Boston Online would like to see an outdoor World War I Memorial erected (South Boston WWI war deaths, including the legendary Mickey Perkins, numbered 103). And what can be done with the Marine Park anchor? As well as other public-oriented improvements?

We mentioned that young Ava has recovered from cancer.

The type of cancer she had is known by the ominous name of “neuroblastoma” – NB for short. NB is the name of a type of cancer caused by the body’s nerve cells mutating and beginning to grow into a deadly tumor. You can imagine their feelings of dread, when Dan and Ayla first heard about Ava’s NB cancer, which was growing in her abdomen. She was only twoand-a-half back then. At Mass

General, Ava first underwent two rounds of chemotherapy, but that left the NB tumor unchanged. After that, it seemed that surgical removal of the NB cancer was Ava’s best (and only other) option.

The surgery has worked. For more than a year, Ava has had no remission.

Dan and Ayla Considine are extremely grateful that Ava’s NB procedures were successful. That is why they are inviting you to a celebration that the Considines are calling “A Night for Neuroblastoma”.

This is a gratitude party; all proceeds will be donated to the childhood cancer organization known as “Beat NB”. Dan and Ayla are “giving bacK’ on March 16.

Councilor Flynn To Call For Hearing on Increasing Linkage Fees to Fund Early Childhood Education Cites Concerns on Childhood Development & Day Care Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn announced that he will call for a hearing this week to discuss the possibility of using linkage fees from large scale commercial developments to fund early childhood education. Early childhood education - including pre-kindergarten and day care- is a critical component of a child’s development. A recent Boston Globe piece highlighted the focus on child care plans from a number of candidates at the national level, as well as Mayor Walsh’s efforts to enroll 3,000 students for pre-kindergarten last year. Councilor Flynn believes a conversation is needed to discuss ways that the city can help fund these services so that every child can have access to early childhood education, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Flynn would also like to discuss requirements to include child care services in new, large scale developments.

Studies have consistently shown that quality early childhood education has a significant and positive impact on a child’s learning, future earnings, health, and family stability - especially for children from lower-income families. However, childcare is expensive and pre-kindergarten seats are limited in Boston Public Schools, making it difficult for many families to find quality and affordable early childhood education for their children.

With recent legislation filed by both Mayor Walsh and Councilor Edwards to allow the City more flexibility to adjust and increase linkage fees, a discussion on the possibility of using linkage fees to fund early childhood education is timely. “I know that being able to enroll a child into Pre-K or having affordable child care is vitally important and, at the same time, difficult for many parents in our city- especially our low-income families,” Councilor Flynn said. “This is an issue that Mayor Walsh remains focused on, and one that is also being discussed extensively at the national level. With possible changes in linkage fees on the horizon, it’s worthwhile for us to explore this as a way to help fund early childhood education, assist families in our city, and to place our children on the best path for success in school and what their future has in store.”

he SBCA President Thomas McGrath is pleased to announce that on this Saturday, March, 2nd 2019, at the Kick-off Breakfast, at the Sea Point Restaurant at 10:00 a.m., The Henry Knox Award Presentation will take place.

Family, Friends and Neighbors are respectfully invited to attend this wonderful event. A $10.00 donation is requested at door to help off-set some of the costs. This year’s event will once again feature great music of Bob Fowkes and Curragh’s Fancy.

The event Chairman will once again be Suffolk County Clerk of the Courts Michael Donovan, who has always supported the fight to preserve the historical importance of Evacuation Day. “As President of the Association, it is an honor for me to once again appoint Mike to kickoff the fes-tivities. His commitment and involvement with the SBCA and the entire community has been a tremendous asset to me and the Executive Board.” Said McGrath This year’s Henry Knox Recipients are Allison Baker, Fran Dempsey, and Michael Dowling.

Allison Baker at a mere 24 years old has dedicated more volunteer hours to the South Boston Community than some people give in a lifetime. She has dedicated so much to the betterment of young women in the community, starting at a young age as a volunteer in the gate of Heaven CYO basketball program. As a product of catholic schools, (Gate of Heaven and Mount Saint Joseph Academy) and raised by a family who believed in her and her abilities, she naturally gravitated to the course of giving back to her parish and community as a leader and shining example of how volunteerism comes full circle.

As a coach at Gatey CYO, she has guided and mentored young girls through the program and recently led the Gatey Travel team to TWO consecutive state championships. We all know that the victory does not come without true dedication from the coach. Most notably, Allison is

the Founder and organizer of the South Boston Kick-off for Kids that brings over 300 community women together in a flag football tournament and has raised an astounding $30,000 that is redistributed to families and children in our community.

Allison is a recent graduate of Westfield State university with a degree in psychology with a goal of teaching inner city youth and providing them with amazing opportunities. Allison currently works for the Tierney Center in the youth program where she has initiated new programs and opportunities for the residents in Old Colony.

Allison is a young, vibrant soul with a proven track record of organizing events that benefit those in the community. She is truly an example of what South Boston is all about-giving back and taking care of its own.

Fran Dempsey, of Fran’s Auto Repair, deserves an “Unsung Hero” award for the thousands of dollars he has saved residents over the years, and for his friendly, competent, and helpful team (including his son Pat) who keep cars running. We are fortunate to have a reliable and honest mechanic in the neighborhood, and we will very much miss Fran’s if his garage should close. There are the many Yelp reviews, from over 10 years, which tell a consistent story of reliability, honesty, and friendly service. I was going to relate our stories, and found that they are identical to so many other people.

Of the fifty reviews, only 4 are negative; Yelp has a file with 70 more reviews which they don’t feature, and the rate is identical, and the comments are similar. 92% of those who take the time to write a review are positive—certainly an unusual degree of positivity in the world today.

Among the nominator’s favorites on Yelp—“the person whose car was having trouble moving on a very cold day, brought it to Fran’s and left it.

They drove the car around to find the problem, but could not. What was the problem? Ice had gotten around some of the parts, which is why the

owner had trouble; later in the day the ice had melted. The car was fine.

The charge was $0. It may be worth noting how many of the positive reviewers are women. Women often find it difficult, intimidating, and frustrating dealing with auto mechanics. Or so I have been told.

But Fran treats every customer with the same respect, which is one of the long-standing attributes of South Boston’s best community members”.

There are many people who report Fran patching a tire rather than replacing it, or charging less than the dealer or another garage for a part, or giving a customer an inspection sticker after a repair so she will not have to. One reviewer said he hesitated to write a review, because he did not want more people leaving their cars with Fran, as it would take time away from his repairs.

People who have moved away report they still bring their car to Fran; and newcomers to South Boston say how relieved they are to have found his garage on Preble Street.

We are pleased to award Fran Dempsey for a Henry Knox Unsung Hero Award, knowing how important it is to the community to have honest, reliable, and competent businessmen, particularly auto mechanics, in the neighborhood—I suspect that at one time we had more, and hope this will encourage Fran and others to continue showing us the best of South Boston.

Michael Dowling began work in 1996 , with the help of Neighbors, to reclaim the neglected site of No Man’s Land “The Ressie” behind South Boston High School.

He invited the South Boston Community to bring a stone and a story of what connected them to South Boston to be places in a Cairn on the side of the hill. In August of 1996, over 200 people showed up to place a stone and tell a story.

In the spring of 1998 a group of 18 teens, who had lost many friends to drug overdose and suicide, approached Dowling.

Under Dowling’s mentorship, they channeled their grief and anger into public artwork, creating a Celtic

Cross Memorial on an abandoned lot called No Man’s Land, a site well known for its drug activity and violence. The impact of this project on the youth was profound—they were provided with a non-threatening platform to heal, express their grief, and in turn, become change agents in their neighborhood.

Today, MWP has employed thousands of young people in reclaiming their lives as they continue the reclamation of No Man’s Land creating an amazing Urban Wild. The most recent addition is a hope and recovery garden and “Our Common Path” where over 600 friends and neighbors have placed engraved bricks of memories dreams and hopes.

McGrath stated “This past summer I was able to witness firsthand the work that has been done at “No Man’s Land” I place I grew up with during my teenage years and was impressed with the work that had been done.

The Association was so impressed with what I had reported back to them, that we decided to purchase a brick in memory of Henry Knox for the success he had up at Dorchester Heights driving the British Ships from Boston .” Medicine Wheel is a thriving arts organization that is transforming individuals and communities from the inside out.

Rep. Biele was also appointed to serve as a Commissioner to the Metropolitan Beaches Commission.

A permanent commission created by the Legislature, the Commission is charged with reviewing the state of public beaches, including several beaches in South Boston and Dorchester, and developing recommendations to protect those beaches while increasing public access and enjoyment. Last year, the Commission secured over $1.2 million to staff and maintain state beaches, including $190,000 for free programming a nd e vent s for c h i ld ren and members of the public.

Legislative committees will hold public hearings throughout the two-year session of the Legislature. The Metropolitan Beaches Commission will hold public hearings in South Boston and Dorchester later this year.

“Bright Lights Winter Nights” in Seaport

South Boston’s Seaport is a place to walk and view the surroundings, even after dark. The most recent evidence of this is the “Bright Lights Winter Nights” display on and around the Seaport Green along Seaport Boulevard. And it’s an “interactive” display, which means that children (and adults, too) are welcome to play with the display and create their own light effects. The photo shows the part of this display called “Prismatica”. There are two other sections as well – “The Loop” in the Seaport Courtyard and the “Igloos” on the Envoy ‘s Lookout Rooftop. Take any Silver Line Bus from South Station and get off at the first stop called “Courthouse”.

Tynan Happenings The BCYF Tynan had a fun-filled February School vacation week.

On Wednesday, we had our friends from the Tierney Center come up and participate in Black History themed Bingo and a flag football game. The children and staff enjoyed lunch in our teen center. Everyone had a great time and all participants left with a prize. We can’t wait to have more fun days with our Tierney crew!

Thursday was a lot of fun, as we had our teen 3 point contest. Everyone put up a solid effort. Congratulations go out to the winners, Evan Markos and Sean Costello, who were the recipients of Visa gift cards.

On Friday, February 22nd, Kathy and Katie took a group of our fitness team girls to Ty Law’s Launch Trampoline Park.

We had a great time jumping around and worked up quite an appetite, which resulted in making a pit stop at Town Spa Pizza, where we got our favorite “Pickle Pizza.”

We’d like to extend gratitude to the BCYF Tynan council for making our vacation activities possible.

Reminder: this coming Monday, March 4th is the Annual St. Patrick’s Day Foul Shooting contest sponsored by the South Boston Citizens Association. All Boys and Girls are welcome as they will be put into their respected age bracket. Starting at 6pm in the bcyf tynan gym!

M

ary Driscoll, a resident of Fort Point and an artist in her own right, has used the work of many artists and performers in assembling her point of view concerning various issues and situations in presentday America. She has emplaced

these efforts in “collective” of people, which she calls O.W.L.L., Inc. (“On With Living and Learning”). O.W.L.L.’s most recent work took place on Friday and Saturday evenings last weekend.

The name of the work was “With the Stroke of a Pen”.

This was a set of six performed scenes, done without a break, utilizing dance, music, acting, and in the end, audience participation.

Simplistically stated, the theme of “With the Stroke of a Pen” was oppression and outright slavery (balanced by striving for freedom) and the need for making more progress in treating every human relationship, including those affected by the law of the land.

The idea of performing these issues, rather than simply

discussing them, worked well.

High points of the performance included dancing by the Tr3y Dance Troupe, “Motherless Child ” (Sheri Bridgema n), “Ain’t Gonna Trun Me Around” (Angela Headley), and the directing (Robert Bridgeman).

Music by Grace St. Dic and Kern St. Dic was beautiful.

Initially, “With a Stroke of a Pen” was Mary Driscoll’s concept.

Collaborators included the Fort Point Theatre Channel and the Fort Point Arts Community. The performance space, although within the footprint of the Envoy on Seaport Boulevard, is actually managed by the Fort Point Arts Community.

Councilor Flynn Calls For Hearing on Tenants’ Rights, Eviction & Displacement Protection

Cites Concerns for Vulnerable Residents at Risk of Losing Their Homes

oston City Councilor Ed Flynn announced that he will call for a hearing this week regarding ways that the city and other organizations can assist longterm residents facing eviction and displacement. The City of Boston has one of the most expensive rental markets in the country, and many residents - particularly lower income families, seniors, and persons with disabilities - now often face the threat of displacement. In light of these conditions, Flynn believes that tenants who have lived in properties for five years or more should be provided one year’s notice to vacate for reasons other than nonpayment, along with information regarding resources available to assist with searching for new housing; while seniors, the disabled, and low-income residents should be afforded two years notice for reasons other than nonpayment.

Residents who have lived in properties for five years or more that are facing eviction due to property sales are not only losing apartments, but are losing their homes. It places even more undue pressure on these tenants to find comparable housing in

only 30 days. Boston currently has a condo conversion law that provides certain protections to tenants and this proposal would afford some of those protections to displaced residents.

Recently, the Boston Globe Magazine published a piece that highlighted the difficulties that Boston area tenants face when fighting eviction, as many of our most vulnerable tenants lack the resources to hire an attorney to represent them in housing court. Moreover, Councilor Flynn has witnessed the impact of the rising rental and housing markets on longtime tenants in the community as, very recently, the owner of A Salon in Chinatown was facing eviction after the building owner attempted to increase rents for his business Similar stories are not rare throughout the district and the city. “I’ve heard from many residents in my district who have faced the very real threat of displacement, or are very concerned about their ability to stay in their homes due to rising rents,” Councilor Flynn said.

“Ensuring that our residents can continue to live and do business in our city without constantly fearing eviction is a top priority for me. I look forward to this conversation so that we may enable tenants to have better access to attorneys and resources, as well as extending the notice period for long-term tenants for reasons other than for nonpayment, especially for our most vulnerable- our seniors, the disabled, and low-income residents.”

ave the Harbor/Save the Bay and the Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR) have released a Request for Proposals for Better Beaches Program Grants to fund free events and programs on the region’s public beaches from Nahant to Nantasket in 2019. “ T he Bet ter Be ache s Program funds and supports free events and programs that are as different as the beachfront communities and waterfront neighborhoods that host them,” said Save the Harbor/Save the Bay’s President Tani Marinovich.

“But one thing they all have in common is that they bring kids and families together to enjoy our region’s great public beaches.”

This year, funds to support the program will include the proceeds of the Harpoon Shamrock Splash which will be held on Sunday, March 10th at the BCYF Curley Community Center at M Street Beach in South Boston. Society Presents “Pulp + Process”

T

he Society of Arts & Crafts (100 Pier Four Boulevard, Suite 200 – second floor) has presented a number of remarkable exhibits since it moved here to South Boston’s Seaport District a few years ago. They opened a new exhibit last Thursday, the 21st, which is entitled “Pulp + Process”. The exact, effective processing of pulp made from wood results in paper, which is probably one the most everyday materials we actually use.

There are everyday uses such as newspaper, wrapping paper, rolled paper, and so on.

Cardboard, which is basically a strong, thick, multi-layered

paper, is used for countless packagings, from cartons to shirt inserts. And then there are extremely fine papers that range from elegant stationery to the unique currency paper that goes into America’s seven denominations of dollar bills.

A nd paper is a lso a materia l that can be used for cra f ts, sculptures, and s oph i s t ic a t e d art f or m s .

This is what is being displayed at the Society of Arts & Crafts as you are reading this. South Boston Online can only discuss and show you a fraction of what you would see in person, so we recommend you go t here you r s e l f.

This pa rticu la r ex hibit was expertly assembled by Sam Aldrich, who is known as the “Emerging Curator” at the Society of Arts & Crafts. And Sam is indeed a rising star at the Society’s shop. If nothing else, you’ll be amazed and pleased at the colors and unexpected shapes he ha s a ssembled, using the various paper works of art from their creators.

We could go on, but frankly, our descriptions and critique can’t compare to seeing the “Pulp + Processing” exhibit in person – and there is no admission cost at the Society of Arts & Crafts.

Make an evening of your visit to the Society of Arts & Crafts.

Spend an hour or two there.

It’s also an arts and crafts shop, where you can find that one, special, unique gift for a good

friend.

We’ll mention that there are many items for sale on display - it’s really like a small museum. Metal mobile sculptor Rebecca Welz is also exhibiting her “Inner and Outer Space” works, and “My Cup Runneth Over” - mentioned in a previous issue, is still there also. And when you are through, drop in for an inexpensive supper at the nearby Wagamama or “Gather” restaurant in District Hall. Make an evening of your visit. Mike the Bubble Man Visits Branch Library

by Rick Winterson What is it that fascinates children about bubbles – and many adults, too? Is it perhaps the simplicity of blowing bubbles, their fascinating iridescence, or simply the challenge of making truly large bubbles?

Those questions were evident at the South Boston Branch Library last Thursday, February 21, during the recent (and highly successful) kids’ event – a visit from Mike the Bubble Man. From 3 ‘til 4 p.m., Mike awed the children who packed the Public Room in the Library. Just how well Mike the Bubble Man held the children’s attention with his non-stop lecture, and of course,with his bubbles, was very impressive. He even had them following his rules of behavior and willingly taking part in the goings-on. To put a number on the interest he generated, his lecture on bubbles held the rapt attention of a roomful of excited kids for an entire hour. Just try that with your own children sometime; you’ll see what we mean.

And Mike’s comments on the science and techniques connected with making bubbles were spot on! He appealed to both the logic and imagination of his young audience members. He shared his secret bubble-making solution (one of the secrets is to let it age for 48 hours – two full days. This writer, in addition to being fascinated by bubbles, has a technical background. Mike the Bubble Man’s presentation to the children contained a lot of simple, but good, Physical Chemistry.

And to repeat, he held the attention of a few dozen (very) excited children for a solid hour.
