Seaman Martin F. McDonough, USNA True Hero by Rick Winterson

P

earl Harbor Day was last Saturday, December 7, the 78th Anniversary of that terrible tragedy back in 1941, a tragedy that immediately led to America’s full-scale engagement in World War II. South Boston resident Martin McDonough was 27 years old at that time. He enlisted in the Unites States Navy 38 days after Pearl Harbor and was assigned to active duty in three days. He made the ultimate military sacrifice just ten short months later – “… lost at sea and presumed dead,” It was f itting that the McDonough Hero Square was dedicated to his memory last Saturday, Pearl Harbor Day. “Hero Squares” are a reverent and historical custom in Boston, which began so that those who gave their lives in action won’t ever

be forgotten. There are more than 1,700 Hero Squares in the City of Boston. The Martin Francis McDonough Square signpost has an enameled plaque affixed to it. We will quote from it: “Martin Fra ncis McDonough, a resident of South Boston, enlisted in the United States Navy on January 14, 1942. In the Navy, he served as a Seaman Second Class on the USS Juneau (a light cruiser) in the Pacific. He fought in many successful engagements with the Juneau, up until the day of his death on November 13, 1942, when the ship was hit and sunk by an enemy torpedo. Seaman McDonough was lost at sea and presumed dead, along with 687 of his fellow crewmembers. For his incredible sacrifice in the service of his country, Martin Francis
