T
he City of Boston administration has been busy with the Mass/Cass homeless situation, which is perhaps the most troublesome immediate problem the City faces. Under Acting Mayor Janey, more than half of those that were encamped along AtkinsonTopeka-Southampton were taken into shelters, or have simply left to go elsewhere (for some, Newmarket Square has become a favorite new location). Now, Mayor Wu has promised Boston a multi-step plan designed to completely close the Southampton-Atkinson-Topeka site before the end of December (and she “paused” the Janey Mass/Cass plan). Basically, Wu’s plan involves arranging for a couple of hundred separate beds at various places around the City over the next few weeks, which can then be offered to substance abusers needing them.

This s ou nd s s i mple , but is actually complicated: The f irst complication, and one of critical importance, is the substance abuse that has taken place at Mass/Cass ever since it was first set up. Almost all of the homeless campers at Mass/Cass need medical attention. Whether one believes in the so-called “tough love” approach, or approves of lengthy counselling instead, professional medical input that deals with substance abuse is required. The next complication is almost as difficult. That’s the requirement for “separation” – both separation of Mass/Cass residents from each other and separation from the Mass/Cass area, now frequented by drug dealers.
