With Professional Guidance, South Boston Teens Create Vaccine Video

By Ginger DeShaney Boston teens are using their voices to spread the word among their peers about the importance of getting vaccinated against COVID-19.

T

hey are hopeful their message will be heard and heeded.

The “Teens Talking to Teens About the COVID Vaccine” video/ social media project was spearheaded by the South Boston Community Health Center Youth Ambassadors in collaboration with the South Boston Neighborhood House and the Edgerley Family South Boston Boys & Girls Club. Michael Indresano of Indresano Studios in South Boston is generously providing professional studio, staff, technical support, and editing -- all pro bono.

“It’s a good opportunity for us to be able to have that voice and spread the word,” Youth Ambassador Owen Rogers, 17, said before his recent shoot.

The video is important to “spread information to others who don’t know yet if they want to get vaccinated,” Owen said. “We’re trying to spread the word and convince more people to get vaccinated.”

Linda Doran, Youth Program Coordinator of the Youth Ambassadors Program, and the Ambassadors had a conversation a few months ago about special projects. They immediately came up with the idea of talking about the vaccine, she said.

“Why aren’t kids getting vaccinated? We don’t know. We

Jack Mogan, 14, a member of the Keystone Club at the Boys & Girls Club, said: “I think [the vaccine] benefits the community. If everybody gets vaccinated, there’s a lower risk of getting COVID and everything can get back to normal.”

Margaret Lynch, the Marketing and Development Director at SBCHC, contacted Michael about the project. “Michael was incredibly supportive, right from the start. He and his team have been amazing with the teens -- helping them to develop their concept and bring it all to fruition,” she said. “Michael is passionate about helping to spread a positive message about the importance of getting the COVID-19 vaccine.”

“We are so grateful,” Linda said about the partnership. She said kids can think of a project and shoot it on their phones, but it’s nothing like this. “It’s such credibility for them to know that their word is being heard and respected and produced in such a professional way.”

segment on his phone. “It was really cool being in a professional studio,” he said.

Linda has always said, “If you give teens a platform they have a lot to say, but they don’t always get that opportunity. To get an opportunity like this to be in a professional studio with a professional crew …”

Added Trey Glickman, an assistant at Indresano Studios, “Teens have a lot of voices being shouted at them but the one voice they don’t have is themselves.”

Now they do. The vaccine project piggybacks on other projects the Ambassadors have done, such as substance abuse prevention and teen sexual health. “They talk peer to peer.

Kids listen to other teens. They’re not going to listen to adults,” Linda said.

“If an adult tells you not to do something, you just want to do it,” said Trey, who is not far removed from being a teenager. “If a teen tells you not to do it, then you’ll listen.”

Mary Lee, 14, got vaccinated so she could feel comfortable going back to school.

Jack and Owen got vaccinated for the older people in their lives. “I think it’s important for people to be

vaccinated to make it safe for people who are high risk,” Owen said.

Studio staff directed the teens on how to enter the shot, asked them questions, and generally provided an amazing atmosphere under the lights and in front of the cameras.

Kristen Clifford, production coordinator at Indresano Studios, said, “I think it’s a great project. The kids I met have been so passionate about this project. We’re happy to be a part of it. Hopefully this video will help get more kids vaccinated.”

Michael said he and his studio staff try to help out whenever they can, noting they give back to a lot of nonprofit organizations in South Boston.

“Margaret mentioned they were really inspired and excited to do it and they wanted to make it a reality, so it encouraged me and gave me a lot of interest to make the kids’ dream a reality; make their vision come to life,” Michael said. “We’re happy to do it.”

The goal is to have the video edited and formatted for several platforms, Trey said, ranging from YouTube (which allows for a longer video) and Instagram to Facebook and TikTok. “You want as wide of a reach as possible,” he said.

For studio producer Samantha Carty, it was her first time working with high schoolers. “They were all clearly very empowered the way they carried themselves,” she said. “It was really impressive.

They were pretty well-spoken.

“They had strong opinions, which gave me hope for the future, honestly.”

A Surprise Donation from the Knights of Columbus

I

t was this year’s Annual Thanksgiving Dinners event, the 38th such event since these dinners began back in the 1980s, in what was once the St. Augustine Parish and Church on Dorchester Street near Eighth.

These dinners have now become a South Boston tradition. The 2021 Thanksgiving Dinners were hosted by (and carried out by) St. Monica Church, the South Boston Seaport Collaborative Parish, and the volunteer members of the Msgr. Thomas J. McDonnell and Frank Kelley Holiday Dinner Committee. By the way, all of these volunteers had Thanksgiving plans of their own, but only after all of the dinners had been cooked, prepared, packed up, and delivered.

The atmosphere throughout St. Monica Hall was festive. A constant, upbeat, thankful buzz accompanied the effort that went into providing Thanksgiving Dinners all over South Boston and nearby homes. Just picture

the Thanksgiving Dinner numbers – 115 turkeys, along with nourishing side dishes, desserts, seasonings, and utensils, went into more than 700 dinners by the time that Thanksgiving morning’s efforts were complete. Not just volunteers – but also hard-working volunteers.

Fr. Peter DeFazio, the Seaport Collaborative’s Pastor, delivered a blessing. Elected officials visited St. Monica Hall during all the hustle-bustle – Clerk of Court Michael Donovan with James Donovan, Councilor Ed Flynn, and newly inaugurated Mayor Michelle Wu dropped by. Each of them spoke in praise of the volunteers’ efforts.

We spoke briefly with Tommy Butler, who coordinates the McDonnellKelley Thanksgiving Dinners each year.

He emphasized that everyone present deserves equal credit for putting them on. “It’s a team effort,” he insisted, a claim that was confirmed by talking with Cathe Walsh and Bubba Cahill.

Tommy also gave credit to Firefighters Local 718 for their help, and to the Convention Center for their assistance.

We asked Tommy about Committee’s plan for Christmas Dinners four weeks from now. He said, “We (the Committee) aren’t sure if we should go back to an in-person Christmas banquet this year. The Committee will decide that depending on how the COVID pandemic surge goes.”

The morning’s effort, although it meant very hard work, had a lot of nice touches. Dunkies provided the

volunteers with their trademark coffee and lots of doughnuts of various holiday kinds. Chef Dan Manning created bountiful mashed potatoes using Frank Kelley’s method in a picnic cooler (Frank had once been a military Mess Sergeant).

The white paper bags used for packing up the dinners for delivery had handmade drawings and greetings all over them. And once again, we’ll mention the Holiday cheer that every volunteer seemed to have, as they worked so hard.

The morning was very nicely capped off by a visit from Steve Greig.

He brought the McDonnell/Kelley Dinner Committee a check from the Knights of Columbus for $1,000 – yes, a thousand dollars for dinners this Christmas and during 2022. You can help out, too. Chris Mancini Sets 2022 Goals for SH/SB

S

ince April of last year, Chris Mancini has been the Executive Director of Save the Harbor/Save the Bay (which we’ll abbreviate to “SH/ SB” in this article). SH/SB is the community group located on the Fish Pier in South Boston that has had such a hugely positive impact on our shores, beaches, and harbor waters for 35 years. Chris, a dedicated environmentalist himself, joined SH/SB in 2016 as their Vice President of Operations and Programming. In October of 2019, he was appointed their Acting Executive Director replacing Patty Foley, who decided to retire after devoting 21 years to SH/SB. Chris then formally assumed the position of Executive Director as of April, 2020.

Chris is originally from Rochester, N. Y. Even as a young man, he was attracted to a career in environmental issues and challenges. He thinks what finally triggered this decision

Scenically, the Valley was still beautiful, but at that time Hudson River water was polluted and outright foul. His constant question, “Why can’t I use this river?”, led to that decision.

Chris received his BA degree from Vassar College in 2002; he moved to Boston in 2004 and was awarded an MA degree in 2007 from Tufts University’s Department of Urban and Environmental Planning. His work record is impressive: Right after

graduating from Vassar he taught Grades K-12 about Hudson River ecology aboard the Sloop Clearwater.

He went on to become Director of Education on New York’s field-based “The River Project”. In Newport, Rhode Island, he worked in a program entitled “Sailors for the Sea” for five years. For the next five years, Chris served as the Executive Director of “Groundwork Somerville”, which (very briefly stated) creates and manages green space activities in Somerville for all to enjoy.

Chris and his wife Abigail have a daughter named Mae. They recently moved to Swampscott and believe it or not, are engaged in cleaning up King’s Beach shared by Lynn and Swampscott. The Mancinis are a talented family. Abigail works as a Librarian at Lesley College and is a quilter as well. Young Mae enjoys basketball, gymnastics, dancing, and – unicorns! Chris plays drums, banjo, guitar, and the piano; he once belonged to a group called “The Country Hicks”.

In discussing accomplishments at SH/SB, Chris says that protecting the Boston area’s shores and beaches comes first, followed by opening up the Harbor to everyone – those with no English speaking ability, people of color, the disabled, and so on. After that comes making these folks into a generation of long-term Harbor stewards. Chris is in favor of opening up the Harbor Islands more completely. He stated, “We have already paid for a clean Harbor and saved these Islands, so we are entitled to use them.” Chris also mentioned an environmental planning reference called “2022 Climate Resiliency

Toolbox” – a methodology for protecting recreational resources (primarily beaches) in coastal communities.

Local beaches under the SH/ SB oversight extend from Nantasket through Quincy, across all of Boston, and out to Winthrop, Lynn, and Nahant.

During this interview, we joked about country music played many, many years ago on WBZ by a DJ named Nelson Bragg from Milo, Maine. Bragg’s lead-in proclaimed his WBZ broadcast stretched from “Coast to Coast! Nantasket to Nahant!” Perhaps that could be the basis of a modern-day slogan for SH/SB. When asked to summarize the SH/SB aims, plans, and goals for 2022, Chris stressed three overall targets in simple but emphatic words: A.- Sharing equally the entire Harbor and all its beaches with everyone in Greater Boston and Vicinity.

B.Continuing the clean water campaign, which so far, has resulted in 90% to 100% utilization of most area beaches.

C.Working jointly with (many) others, such as the Boston Harbor consortium, to slow down and eventually eliminate destruction of beaches by climate change.

Chris also asked us to mention the SH/SB fundraiser, called the “Harpoon Shamrock Splash”. This is a lighthearted winter plunge that raises money to support many SH/SB free activities on our public beaches (the Better Beaches Program). This plunge will take place during a weekend in early March – still wintertime – on a date and at a location to be announced soon. Please watch for it.

Coming Into Focus Photographer Tells Stories Through A Different Lens

J

ohn McCosh is a storyteller.

But he doesn’t use words to tell stories … he uses his camera, living by his philosophy of photo “fabula” (Russian for “story”).

“Photography is kind of like a poem,” said the owner of South Boston’s LightFlex Studios in the Distillery Gallery at 516 E. 2nd St., Suite 104. “Whatever you get with a poem, you can get with a picture. A thousand words for a picture, I would say make it 80 words and make it poetry.”

And every good story includes people. When John first started out, he was focusing on landscapes.

“But you know what? People are the story,” he said. “The more you can get a human, relatable moment, the more it’s going to connect to people.

Because people don’t connect with rocks; they connect with people.”

He loves doing all kinds of photography, “but the most reaction you can get is when you take pictures of people.

“I’ve had a few people who told me they had an emotional reaction, saying ‘That’s the best picture of me I’ve ever seen.’ That is so gratifying.”

John excels at finding -- and telling -- the story behind the image.

“I’m always studying how to pose people,” he said, noting that even the slightest change in a pose can be the difference between a great

photo and one that gets passed over.

“You need to create the space for that to happen. When you see it, you feel it in your center,” John said.

“There are all sorts of rules in photography ... but a lot of times I would just simply go until I feel it right in my core. That’s how I frame, too. I feel it. You want to have your general approach ... but you really want it to be visceral.

“It really just comes down to how you, as a person, react to something.“ John received a BA in English and an MBA from UMass-Boston, where he met his wife, Kristen Donoghue McCosh. He earned an MFA from Boston University in screenwriting, another form of storytelling.

John, 54, who grew up in Quincy but has lived in South Boston since 1999, got his first camera, a Vivitar, in the 1970s.

“I’ve always enjoyed [photography],” he said. “My dad taught me how to manually focus.” The rest he taught himself.

In the 1990s, he started seriously studying photography. Every month, he’d buy an average of four photo magazines and devour them. “I learned from those magazines,” he said. He studied art books. He read camera manuals, which helped him advance in his photography techniques and skills.

John put his photography knowledge and skills into practice when he traveled through Hawaii, Australia, and Southeast Asia on a backpacking trip, where he photographed everything from

John McCosh landscapes, to volcanoes, to Komodo dragons. Later, his job at State Street Bank transferred him to London, and he spent his free time taking photos throughout England, Scotland, France, Germany, and Italy.

To this day, he’s still learning, always in pursuit of information and techniques. Whenever he goes to a museum or gallery, he looks for the photo exbiibits. He still studies artwork.

“You can accidentally take a great picture, but you can’t accidentally paint a great painting,” he said. By studying what the masters of their craft do, you will learn a lot, he said.

“The most important thing is the lighting,” he said.

“No one’s ever photographed anything other than light.”

His photography really took off in 2007 when Kristen was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Massachusetts and then Ms. Wheelchair America (2008). He was taking photos at the competitions for Kristen and for fun but he was also sharing a lot of the photos, including for pageant newsletters.

“People saw them and it was exciting but I wasn’t doing it for me, I was doing it for the people there. But it’s exciting when people consume your work.”

America, Kristen and John traveled around the country to events and his photography and storytelling really ramped up.

Now John is sharing his passion with the community. He is currently offering Holiday Photo sessions at his studio. A 15-minute mini-session, with a choice of three holiday sets, costs $59 and includes a link to all the photos John takes, plus three edited high-resolution shots.

John’s studio, which includes a group of local shooters, also does headshots (corporate, actors, social media), family portraits, newborn and baby photos, maternity shoots, weddings and engagements, sporting and event photography, and a full line of videography services.

John also started the Facebook group “Hometown Pictures, South Boston” for photographers of all levels so they can tell their own stories.

Bounty. Timothy maintained an absolutely remarkable 4.81 GPA at Dexter Southfield.

Most notably, Brian organized a “wifflethon” fundraiser while just a young fifth- and sixth-grader to raise money for ovarian cancer.

A wellrounded and solid young man who has sought to be a good example for others, Dermot volunteered his time at Compass by the Bay to help comfort those suffering from dementia. A well-rounded and solid young athlete, Dermot excelled at cross-country and track and field while at Catholic Memorial.

Eddie played the full gamut of sports in Southie but excelled in baseball at Catholic Memorial and will

continue playing at Western New England University. We are fortunate that athletes like Eddie have shared his talent with our next generation by coaching Gatey CYO basketball and supporting the Mayor’s Cup ba seba l l tou rna ment.

Male Athlete of the Year, Thomas White is a humble and ref lective young man who will serve as a great example of the type of person South Boston produces. He credits his Gatey CYO basketball coach, Mike Donovan, with turning him into the athlete he is and setting him on his athletic journey. As sports tend to do, Thomas grew as a person from his athletic experience, increasing his confidence both on and off the court. Thomas has sought to emulate his experiences and coached in the Gatey instructional basketball league and coached track at the Youth Enrichment Services at Moakley Park. It is ironic that Thomas cites being at Moakley “where my love of running began.”

We can only wonder if he will be the next South Boston track and field all-star to make it to the highest level … like James Brendan Connolly in 1896. Thomas is running Division 1 track and cross-country at Bucknell.

McRAE WIEDERER Award: Massport Scholarship Gr a nt Spon s or : M a s sp or t Authority High school: O’Bryant School of Mathematics & Science College: Penn State University W hile m a i nt a i n i n g an a stounding 4.78 GPA at t he O’Bryant School of Mathematics & Science, McRae Wiederer also was selected as captain of her soccer team for junior and senior years.

Not surprisingly, she was awarded Most Improved on her basketball team and a Scholar Athlete of the Month. Suffice to say, McRae is driven and dedicated. Beyond her work at the O’Bryant, McRae cites her orientation to the Paraclete Center as the spark behind her volunteerism and service. Over the years, she has sought to serve as a dance teacher at Miss Linda’s, raised money for breast cancer research, and worked with the Red Cross.

McRae is majoring in Veterinary a nd Biomedica l Sciences.

Massport employees collected and donated hundreds of non-perishable food items, as well as grocery store gift cards, for the Authority’s annual food drive that benefits several community organizations.

“Food insecurity is a real issue for many individuals and families, especially during the holidays,” said Massport Director of Community Relations & Government Affairs Alaina Coppola. “Through our annual food drive, we hope to help some of our most vulnerable neighbors feed their families this season. We thank our employees for their continued generosity.”

The Mental Health ABC Act 2.0 is driven by the recognition that mental health is as important a s physica l hea lth for ever y resident of the Commonwealth and should be treated as such.

The bill proposes a wide variety of reforms to ensure equitable access to mental health care and remove barriers to care by supporting the behavioral health workforce.

This piece of legislation works in tandem with the l a nd m a r k $400 m i l l i on investment in menta l a nd behavioral health we recently secured in the Senate’s ARPA bi l l. T he legislation w i l l transform mental health care delivery including the following:

Boston Seaport’s Holiday Market

outh Boston’s much anticipated Holiday Market has formally arrived, in (and courtesy of ) Boston Seaport’s “Snowport” at 88 Seaport Boulevard. There have been crowds of visitors this week, who not only came to shop but also enjoyed an open-air, outdoor marketplace in the European style. And that isn’t all – a Holiday Tree Market, iceless curling (with lessons), bright Holiday lights, lyrical Holiday background music, and several places to dine and relax are a part of Snowport’s Holiday Market as well. You can get a lot of your Holiday shopping done in just one festive spot, and (perhaps) in just one festive day.

Some 60 Holiday shops are now in place in Boston Seaport’s Holiday Market. You shouldn’t miss them – there’s something for everyone. The Market will be open seven days a week (yes, 7!) from now until Sunday, January 2. Plan to make a day of it – there’s a lot to see!

The Market is home to a number of craftspeople known as “Makers” – stop by them all.

“Makers” are groups of craftspeople and small businesses that create unique items having many artistic features. In addition to their eyecatching appearances, these items are also useful in countless ways – the word “Makers” is a good name for the artisans who create them.

Among the marketers are several small business originators, who are members of the consortium named

Black-Owned BOS. They brought more than 30 open-air shops to Boston Seaport last summer. As a tribute to their high quality, Black-Owned BOS was awarded a 2021 “Best of Boston” for Retail Pop-Ups from Boston Magazine.

Space does not allow us to describe all 60 Holiday Makers and Marketeers. But here are a few that really caught our eyes: Largely by hand, Natural Olivewood carves useful and beautiful objects from the wood of olive trees, including a stunning chessboard and table set.

South Boston Catholic Academy News November Highlights

n the beginning of November, Mr. Cole Stautberg’s third grade class tested their wind vanes for three days to track the wind direction. Tracking this data helped them understand how air pressure can push air masses around to create wind. This assisted them in understanding the weather of our world and how it is created.

We also welcomed back Mrs. Emily McGilvery, our former K0 Teacher, as our new STEM Teacher for our students in the Early Childhood Program. STEM is an acronym for the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Each subject or pillar is part of the greater whole of the lesson plan. So instead of teaching math as separate from technology or science, the concepts work together.

From November 8 to November 22, SBCA students/families brought in nonperishable items for the Annual Food Drive we had at South Boston Catholic Academy to help families in our community have a Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you to everyone who generously donated to this Food Drive.

On November 24, in the spirit of Thanksgiving and the ending to the Liturgical Year, the 6th grade class led us, via intercom, in a prayer of Thanksgiving that consisted of the Prayer of St. Francis…Lord make me an instrument of your peace. Where

The circular shape of the wreath, without beginning or end, symbolizes God’s complete and unending love for us—a love that sent his Son into the world to redeem us from sin. It also represents eternal life which becomes ours through faith in Jesus Christ.

Councilor Flynn Calls for Funding for Pedestrian Safety Improvements

oston City Councilor Ed Flynn is advoc ating for a portion of the Bipartisan Infra structure Bill f unding for the city to be dedicated to address long-standing pedestrian safet y needs with improved traff ic-calming infrastructure, through the use of speed bumps, raised crosswalks, and rapid f lash beacons on high traff ic roads and corridors throughout Boston. With reports that the state is expected to receive over $9 billion in municipal aid from the infrastructure bill, and potentially billions more in ava ilable gra nt f unding, Boston has a unique opportunity to a lso sca le up our built environment a nd physica lly change our high traffic roads and corridors to help slow down cars and keep our pedestrians, c yclist s, a nd d rivers sa fe.

There is a glaring need to invest in infra structure such as speed bumps, raised crosswalks, rapid f lash beacons with pedestrian islands, road diets, and curb extensions for shorter crosswalks.This presents a chance to scale up our Slow Streets progra m across the city, so that all neighborhoods can move forward together in our shared goal of no serious or fata l crashes in Boston.

“A s we discuss how we should utilize federal funding to fix our roads, bridges and public transportation, I also believe we must focus on making Boston a safer and more accessible city for all with the help of infrastructure that forces speeding cars to slow down,” said Councilor Flynn.

“To make the serious crashes in our city a thing of the past,

we need to physically change our roads with speed humps, raised crosswalks, and rapid f lash beacons with pedestrian islands. I will continue to work w it h my neig hbors, colleagues, and the cit y to make our streets safer for all.”
