We now look forward to Christmas, Hanukkah, Yule, Winter’s Eve, or whatever, followed by the 2020 New Year’s Day, and for some of you, perhaps even the Twelfth Night Epiphany on January 6.So, please be thankful for our glorious Holiday Season.

here is no question that the United States of America is the greatest nation the world has ever seen – not perfect, but certainly very great. One of the many things that define the U.S. is Thanksgiving Day, our unique and special holiday that the original Pilgrims to the New World first celebrated 399 years ago. It has become an official American holiday of great historic and emotional significance.

Thankful The decade between 2020 and 2030 also includes the 250th anniversaries of many key Boston events: the Boston Massacre (1770-2020), the Boston Tea Party (1773-2023), Paul Revere’s ride and “The shot that was heard ‘round the World” on Patriot’s Day (1775-2025), and our March 17 Evacuation Day (1776-2026), which was caused by fortifications placed on the Heights of South Boston.

Celebrate these anniversaries when they occur. Be thankful for what all these historic events led to.

to put food on the table. So as we celebrate in our own ways, we must also remember to look out for one another—and show what it means to be a City of neighbors helping neighbors.

This Thanksgiving, I’m excited to continue my tradition of volunteering with loca l shelters. It’s heartwarming to see so many individuals, food banks, and shelters open their doors to people and families, so that everyone can take part in a Thanksgiving celebration. To the compassionate volunteers who lend a hand on this holiday, your help is greatly appreciated. A hot

meal, a place to escape the cold, and a gesture of kindness go a long way in providing comfort to someone in need. And you should take pride in knowing you’re part of a citywide effort to reach out to and support Bostonians e x per ienci ng homele s sne s s.

I also want to thank our many dedicated city partners who connect people to shelters and vital services. They are out on our streets, every day, making sure people know where they can find assistance if they need it. And as a City, we are always working toward our ultimate goal of getting people on the path to supportive and permanent housing. So far, we’ve housed nearly 2,000 chronically homeless individuals, including 1,000 veterans. We’ve ended chronic veteran homelessness, and we’re on our way to ending all chronic homelessness in Boston.

We’ve got more work to do, but we’re making progress every day.

Our work is more than about getting people into housing.

It’s about building a strong and resilient City, where all of our

residents can succeed. It’s about our fundamental belief that every single person in our City deserves a chance to build a better life for themselves and their families— and to follow their dreams. And it’s about the day to day actions we can take to make even one person’s day a little brighter.

I continue to be inspired by Bostonians who, every single day, who set an example on how to give back to their communities.

I want to thank everyone who helps make Boston a stronger, more vibrant, and connected city.

Meeting #2: Curley Community Center Renovation

T

he BCYF (Boston Centers for Youth & Families) held their second evening meeting concerning the City of Boston’s plans to renovate the iconic James Michael Curley Community Center.

The Curley Center, commonly called “The L”, is located on Day Boulevard at the foot of L Street. The BCYF meeting began promptly at 6 in “The L”; more than 50 South Boston residents attended.

The BCYF first presented four key project goals: 1.- What is most important, the Curley Center will remain as a Community Center, open to all.

2.- The building will receive a full renovation inside.

No new additions are planned.

3.- The building’s structure (walls, roof, etc.) will be completely repaired and improved.

4.- The Curley Center’s landscape will be upgraded on both its beach and street sides.

In the first BCYF meeting about

Curley Renovation Meeting #2 was well attended. the Curley Center on September 30, an 18-month shutdown for these renovations was mentioned. A bar chart showed design would be completed in mid-2020 and that construction would be completed in mid-2021. This timing was adjusted to 24 months or two full years during Curley Meeting #1, perhaps because of actual experience with other Community Centers, like the City’s facility in Charlestown.

South Boston Online has received some push-back since then about the lengthy shutdown, so we inquired.

Doing the renovations while the Center stays open would be very costly (perhaps an extra $5 million). Also, the project, if it

had to work around complete, ongoing, day-to-day Curley Center activities, could drag on for a much longer time.

Some partial Center activities will be maintained during the project as proposed, so it is likely that the two-year project duration, with a shutdown, is (inevitably) the best and only way to go.

We’ll comment briefly on some of the studies and surveys concerning the Curley Center, much of them based upon responses submitted by those who attended the first meeting on September 30. An overwhelming share of these responses came from South Boston residents, most of whom were members who used ”The L” at least weekly and even daily. Fitness classes, weights, and equipment (added together) were the most dominant uses of “The L”. Use of the beach areas was a strong second-place activity. “Special events” and “Youth programs, 0-12” followed.

Other uses included sauna/steam, senior programs, playground, teens, handball, community meetings, and dance.

Curley Meeting #2 was a very productive meeting, so we’ll conclude this article with some of the questions and comments from the crowd, which followed the formal presentation by the BCYF personnel. One question involved sand fences and maintenance of the beach areas, because the original “Old Harbor beach” was overgrown, and it often shifted (see current photos of Carson and M Street beaches by South Boston Online). Another question was asked about handball courts being open during construction (“Probably not.”).

Will the present Curley employees return? (“Yes.”). Will the Curley membership cost increase? (“No, it could even be a little less, due to using solar energy.”). Can we expect a smallweight room for the elderly? (“Yes.”) Please plan to take part yourself in future meetings about the Curley Community Center renovation.

Don’t forget that it will remain your “Community Center”, with a unique location on South Boston’s beautiful Old Harbor shoreline. The James M. Curley Community Center (or “The L”, if you wish) will actually have three beaches: “Programs”, “Members Only”, and “Events”.

Councilor Flynn Update on Pedestrian Safety & TNC (Uber/Lyft) Hearings

ast week, Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn held two hearings at the Council; one aimed at pedestrian crossing signals and traffic calming, and another on transportation network companies (TNCs), such as Uber and Lyft, operating in Boston. These hearings brought together city officials, advocates and residents to discuss matters relating to public safety, enforcement, infrastructure, congestion and our transportation system.

The hearing on crossing signals and traffic calming was held November 18th and chaired by Councilor Michelle Wu. Councilor

Flynn discussed continued work with the Boston Transportation Dept. on in f ra st r uc t u re improvements such as speed humps, raised crosswalks, road diets and rapid flash beacons as ways to ensure pedestrian safety. Councilor Flynn highlighted the need for slower speeds and enforcement from the Boston Police Dept. He also called attention to resident concerns about pedestrian signals that allow for crossing the street at the same time that vehicles have a signal to turn at an intersection, which could potentially be unsafe for pedestrians. Other councilors, residents, and advocates all spoke

or the past four or five weeks, the Good Samaritan Ministry and Monica’s Kitchen based out of St. Monica-St. Augustine parish has been receiving donations of food or money from generous donors such as the American Legion, the Greater Boston Food Bank, and many individuals for Thanksgiving meals. Additionally, some generous benefactors have provided turkeys.

During this same period of time, we have been taking down the names, addresses, and proof of residency of families living in Southie, in need of a helping hand.

Each family is provided with two bags of groceries. This is primarily organized

by Deacon. Paul Kline, Susan McLeod, Ed and Jean Shifflett, and Fr. Peter DeFazio. And we work closely with Cathe Walsh, Bubba Cahill, Dan

Manning, and Diane Horne who make the sit-down meal on Thanksgiving day happen. The food was distributed on Tuesday, November 26th. The goal is to ensure that no family in South Boston goes without a great Thanksgiving meal.

Additionally, some families and individuals will opt for the Thursday option: This is the sit down Thanksgiving meal that is organized by Cathe Walsh, Bubba Cahill, Dan Manning, etc., at St. Monica-St. Augustine Church Hall on Thanksgiving day which will feed a few hundred more families and individuals. Meals are even delivered to the homebound, and the St. Monica’s provides a hotline for people to call who are homebound (“ If you can’t leave your home and would like a meal delivered, give St. Monica a call at (617) 368-0091.”)

The hearing on Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) (Uber/Lyft) took place on November 19th, co-sponsored

by Councilor O’Malley and also chaired by Councilor Wu. Data from the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) show that there were more than 42 million rides in Boston in 2018, or over 115,000 rides per day. This additional traffic exacerbates congestion, creates safety issues related to speeding and double parking, as well as environmental concerns.

Administration officials testified in regards to pilot programs on pick-up/drop-off spots, as well as pending legislation at the State House that would raise fees on TNC rides to allow the city to utilize funds for infrastructure improvements. Issues around accessibility of pick-up/drop-

off spots for TNC rides for persons with disabilities was also discussed, as well as the need for better data sharing between TNC companies and the City of Boston.

“Pedestrian safety and traffic congestion are two of the most important issues that affect the everyday lives of our residents, “ said Councilor Flynn. “Thank you to the panelists, officials, and residents who testified at these hearings. It is critical for our city to remain focused on traffic calming through infrastructure improvements, slower speeds and enforcement. It is clear that we also need better data sharing with TNCs so that we can implement policies to address concerns regarding traffic, public safety, the environment, and consumer protection.”

Cambria Hotel Opens at 6 West Broadway

n a joyful ribbon-cutting on Thursday afternoon, November 14, the Cambria Hotel located at 6 West Broadway here in South Boston opened its doors to the public. Senior Vice President Janis Cannon oversaw the ribbon-cutting and unveiling at Cambria’s very first location in Massachusetts, which is designed for modern business travelers as well as those who are visiting local South Boston residents. Formally entitled “Cambria Hotel Boston, Downtown-South Boston”, its location and its façade, overlooking the Kelly Bridge and the expansive Boston skyline, are awesome sights.

Throughout the upcoming holiday season, families and friends throughout the Boston area will gather to give thanks for each other, and for the food we enjoy as part of our traditions.

Most of us are fortunate enough to enjoy full tables, but the Greater Boston Food Bank reports that hunger affects one in eleven of our neighbors in Eastern Massachusetts and 34% earn too much to qualify for emergency food assistance provided by the government.

This year, Massport is pleased to provide food donations to three programs in our community: Crossroads Family Center in East Boston; Winthrop Community Food Pantry; and South Boston Community Health Center Food Pantry. These three organizations serve hundreds of people each month, and often mean the difference between paying for heat and having enough food for the family to eat.

As we enter the holiday season, we are reminded that these programs and many others provide critical assistance year-round to the most vulnerable members of our community.

“All Voices Count”

by Rick Winterson “All Voices Count”, an inclusive drama in nine brief acts, is an Until Tomorrow Productions Project, presented by the NightOWLLs from OWLL (“On With Living and Learning”), in collaboration with South Boston’s FPAC (the Fort Point Arts Community).

It is impossible to predict the

next creative, outstanding thing you might see in our local neighborhoods.

Over the weekend of November 15-16, a truly remarkable dramatic presentation took place here. It was a diverse, inclusive, live-staged play entitled “All Voices Count”. Its cast and Director are all individuals with major disabilities. And their play (and all of them) worked strikingly well. Throughout its nine scenes, “All Voices Count” was by turns gripping, humorous, beautiful, entertaining, and expertly performed – a true work of dramatic art on every level.

We’ll briefly mention the disabilities that the Director of “All Voices Count” and her five-member cast have learned to live with, and which, for the most part, they have overcome. One cast member is blind; another has cerebral palsy with muscle spasms. Two others live with major mental issues. And three of the six are wheelchair bound. Enough said! They are artists who love to

“All Voices Count” was brought here and presented by OWLL (On With Living and Learning).

OWLL was founded a few years ago by Mary Driscoll, who lives in Fort Point. It is a collective of artists who use their talents to bring about social change. Mary’s OWLL sponsors “NightOWLLs” - culturally specific performances by underrepresented artists from diverse groups and communities.

FPAC, which stands for Fort Point Arts Community, is part of New England’s oldest and largest artists community. Presently, the newly opened Envoy in the Seaport has donated a performance space to FPAC that they call “Assemblage Gallery””.

To complete this circle, OWLL is now the Theater in Residence within Assemblage, and brought “All Voices Count” into Assemblage with the collaboration of FPAC. “All Voices Count” is an Until Tomorrow Productions project. Its Director is Donna Folan (who also

teaches at the Condon School in South Boston); her co-Director is cast member Maureen Finnerty. Julie Tidemand is Stage Manager; Jody Steiner, the ASL Interpreter; and Vince Lombardi, the Audio Describer.

OWLL’s Mary Driscoll welcomed the audience to the play.

Then, Charles Baldwin from the Mass Cultural Council gave keynote remarks, and Vince Lombardi explained how he works as an Audio Describer. All the while, Stage Manager Julie Tidemand and ASL Interpreter Jody Steiner were hard at work. The performance of “All Voices Count” ensued, with its humor, pathos, and outstanding action.

The play contained the answers to questions such as “Can you talk with two sticks?”, “Can you dance in a wheelchair?”, and “How do you ask for a beer if you’re speechimpaired?” The cast – Maureen Finnerty, Anthony Lu, Tyler Terrasi, DJ Robinson, and Dew Jareanvai – took several well-deserved bows in front of an enthusiastic audience, rising to a standing ovation.

A social hour in the Assemblage concluded the all-too-short evening.

East Boston and South Boston Prepare for Thanksgiving Day The 101st clash between East Boston High School and South Boston High will take place on Thanksgiving morning at White Stadium. Kick-off time is 9:30 a.m.

The Jets, led by John Parziale are 4-6. The Knights, led by Germaine Sattiawhite are 1-9.

Last year, the 100th game was played at Sartori Stadium on Thanksgiving morning amid bitter cold temps. East Boston won 22-6. The rivalry began in 1903. Overall, East Boston leads the series at 44-42. Both teams value the Thanksgiving day game and have been practicing all week and hope to end the season with a Turkey day win.

All are welcome to come out and cheer on both teams at venerable White Stadium. Admission is free too.

t was called “the immigra nt church ”, partly because it served a multitude of Catholic immigrants, and partly because political and social pressures made it relocate to South Boston in 1872. In other words, along with many individual immigrants, the St. Vincent de Paul Church itself immigrated here, specifically to E and West Third

Streets, Roxbury puddingstone and all. Then, for more than 130 years, the St. Vincent de Paul Church served its immediate neighborhood, and indeed, all of South Boston.

At 6 p.m. on Monday evening, the 18th, a Prayer Service took place in St. Peter Lithuanian Church, in memory of St. Vincent de Paul Church. Its motto? “We never had a chance to say goodbye … “.

A greeting from St. Peter Church’s Fr. Peter Defazio followed an opening hymn. There were readings from Kings 5, 6 by Michael Farma and the First Epistle of St. Peter by Tom White. A period of silence allowed the congregation to recollect for themselves. Registers of Baptisms, Weddings, and Funerals were placed at the altar. Srs. Margaret and Kate narrated Joyce Rupp’s poignant poem, “A Parish Prayer”.

Then, many shared their own impromptu memories of St. Vincent de Paul Church and its people and its activities. Early on, Jean

Shiflett had asked what had become of the beautiful white altar in St. Vincent’s Lower Church. Many remembrances were about happy childhoods in the Church’s benign shadow, which were freshly brought forth into the 21st Century. Fr. Joe White, once at the Church himself, fixed in everyone’s mind its actual, formal street address – E and West Third Street (not 363). Deacon Paul spoke about all those gathered

memories of St. Vincent de Paul Church, saying that it was “the most beautiful church I’ve ever seen.”

Sr. Kate gave the Closing Prayer.

The Memorial ended with a hymn, “Let Us Build the City of God.” Afterward, the congregation shared many more memories and refreshments in the St. Peter Lower Church. It was quietly magnificent celebration of a much-missed institution.

Happy Thanksgiving To All!

All of us in the Gate of Heaven and St. Brigid Parish with St. Augustine Chapel Religious Education Program want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! This past Sunday the students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade had fun making special Thanksgiving cards for their families that included a delicious Cranberry Recipe to make at home and share with their family and friends on Thanksgiving Day. Here is the recipe, just in case you want to make it for your family and friends, too: 1 ½ Cups of Cranberry’s ½ Cup of Sugar ½ Cup of Water (¼ Cup of Orange Juice or a Table Spoon of Orange Zest, Optional) Put all the ingredients together in a pan and boil gently for 5-10 minutes, until berries pop.

Mix well. The sauce will thicken as it cools. Enjoy!
