Building Community Hilco Redevelopment Partners Donates 1,000 Turkeys to South Boston Families

By Ginger DeShaney Like a good neighbor, Hilco Redevelopment Partners is there.

H

R P, t he owner and developer of 776 Summer St., a 1.68-million-square-foot redevelopment of the former Edison Power Plant, donated 1,000 turkeys to South Boston families in need, working in collaboration with South Boston Association of NonProfits (SBANP) to distribute them.

“We know that the pandemic hit families really hard,” said Jasmine Sessoms, senior vice president of corporate affairs for HRP. “We don’t want to just build in neighborhoods, we want to be good neighbors. This is our way of demonstrating that we want to be a part of the community here. Tell us what you need; we want to help out.”

Jasmine said her company has donated 4,000 turkeys this year: 1,000 in each of its project cities: Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Richmond, CA. Last Friday, the turkeys were unloaded from trucks in the parking lot at the Ollie’s H Street location. Nonprofit organizations that requested turkeys picked them up in the morning; individuals stopped by for theirs in the afternoon.

“Seven hundred of the turkeys are being given to organizations to give out to their families,” said Kathy Lafferty, co-president of SBANP. “Another 300 are being given to individuals who signed up on their own.”

“We’re trying to fill a need, but there’s so much more need and we want to continue to do good things in the community,” said Jasmine, who, in the midst of a turkey shortage, found a local women-owned food purveyor -- Dole & Bailey -- to provide the organic turkeys.

t’s appropriate, a nd in fact necessary, for each a nd ever y one of us to pause this week and ask what we must be thankful for. Late in this year of 2021, that may take more than a few short moments, because we are still recovering from the worst plague almost any of us has ever experienced in an entire lifetime.

At this point, the COV ID19 pandemic has been with us for well over a year and a half.

But think ing about the pandemic immediately reminds us that we now have a highly effective COVID-19 preventive a vaccine that works almost every time. And a booster shot has recently become available that seems to restore the effectiveness of the vaccine, months after it was first given. The vaccine was developed in less than a year.

Yes, COV ID-19 was, and still is, a plague. There is still a lot we don’t know about it.

Many of us have a friend, relative or neighbor who contracted C OV I D; t r a g ic a l ly, s ome didn’t recover. Even so, we are a generation of individuals who have benefited from a miracle of modern science. Much of that miracle was discovered right here in Eastern Massachusetts.

So, we must be thankful – very thankful for humanity’s i n g e n iou s L i f e S c ie nt i s t s a nd t heir laboratories.

This brings to mind all of the other members of the medical profession – doctors, nurses, technicians, hospita l staffs, and so on. They have all served the sick faithfully, well, and truly. The exhaustion that has caught up with tens of thousands of our nurses is

only one example of the many sacrifices that medical personnel have made, both in fighting the pandemic and then catching up with all of the other medical procedures that were delayed.

Thank you. Thanks to every health worker who took, and is still taking, such good care of us.

We suggest looking at the past, the present, and into the future as a source of gratitude.

Last year, we passed exactly four centuries since settlers first came ashore in Plymouth on December 21, 1620. In 2025, it will be 250 years ago that the Battle of Lexington and Concord took place; in 2026, it’ll be 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was written, sent out by courier, and read to Bostonians from the balcony of the Old State House. In 2030, it will 400 years since John Winthrop landed in Charlestown and declared that Boston would become a “City upon a Hill”.

Locally and more lately, the South Boston Citizens’ Association held both its 140th and 141st Anniversary meeting, thus making something positive out of t wo pandemic-caused delays. Dorchester Heights, the monument, and its many features have turned 120 years of age. Artists for Humanity t u rned 30 rec ent ly, a f ter starting in various lofts on and

around Fort Point. Youth work sponsored by SPOKE/Medicine W heel began reclaiming No Man’s Land in 1996 – 25 years ago. And there are many more local associations that deserve our thanks for their long service.

W h at’s p e rh a p s mo s t important, sometime during t he autumn of 1621 four centuries ago, the Pilgrims set an example of gratitude for future years. It was the first Thanksgiving. They feasted with the Wa mpa noags a nd gave thanks for the blessings they had received, even though more than half of those who arrived here on the Mayf lower had sickened and died during the first year in Plymouth. In 2021, we should also be grateful for what we do have, and not resentful of what we don’t have.

A f inal reminder: It’s still November. It’s Veterans’ Month, as well as the month in which the Armistice ending World War I was declared.

So please remember to give your thanks to all A merican veterans – in combat, on active duty, or retired, and especially to those who did not return.

Building Community The need is real in South Boston. Interested nonprofits and individuals signed up for turkeys via a link. More than 1,000 requests came in very quickly, necessitating the creation of a wait list.

“People hear that condos sell for $2 million and that there’s all these new bistros and great restaurants in South Boston, but what they forget is that we have three low-income housing developments and people in this community who are living in deep poverty,” Kathy said. ”And COVID certainly put a light on that a little

bit, but people still don’t understand that families go without all the time.”

Added Anna White, co-president of SBANP, “Hundreds of families access Fourth Presbyterian’s food bank and St. Monica’s food pantry every week. Hundreds of families.”

Melissa Schrock, senior vice president of mixed-use development for HRP, said the company has three pillars of sustainability: for the environment; for the local economy; and for the community.

HRP does a lot of philanthropic work year-round, Melissa said, but it’s especially important around the holidays to reach out and help.

“They like giving back,” David said, noting these volunteers help out wherever they can, such as the South Boston Street Festival, road races, and the St. Monica’s and Fourth Presbyterians food pantries.

“It gives them purpose,” he said. “It brings joy to someone else.”

Announcing a New South Boston Partnership

ou read that right.

South Boston now has a brand new, exciting, and very important partnership. On Monday, the United States Marine Corps (the USMC) opened its 2021 Toys for Tots effort in Rooms 106-109 West at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (the BCEC). This matches two very fine local organizations in a superb partnership, which has no comparison that we have ever heard of. The joint USMC/BCEC effort on Toys for Tots is unique.

As it was last year, the 2021 Toys for Tots campaign is being coordinated by Staff Sergeant Howard Brown (USMC). But this year, Toys for Tots is taking place immediately after their relocation into the Convention Center, as well as in the middle of what’s left of the COVID19 pandemic. It’s a difficult, hard-working time. So we’d like to mention that this year’s Toys for Tots campaign needs

m a ny w i l l i n g volu nte er s.

Please consider donating your time and effort to one of the most satisfying Christmas activities we can imagine. Much of the Toys for Tots volunteers’ work involves picking up, sorting, and then helping to deliver the toys. If you have a truck, please offer to drive it on Toys for Tots pick-ups and deliveries. Parking at the Convention Center is at the back of the main building; many loading/unloading points are near there, too. Go to the Toys for Tots website for contact information (Toys for

As for background, last year Boston’s Toys for Tots volunteers distributed nearly 100,000 toys to more than 60,000 children, even though Christmastime was in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic’s worst surge. That was more than just hard work – it was courageous! Toys for Tots was originally founded in 1947

by a Marine on the West Coast, so it will become a 75-year-old American tradition next year in 2022. Over the years, Toys for Tots has grown and grown – so far, it has given 550 million (!) toys to 250 million (!) children.

Flynn Calls for Funding for Pedestrian Safety Improvements

B

oston City Councilor Ed Flynn is advocating for a portion of the Bipartisan Infra structure Bill f unding for the city to be dedicated to address long-standing pedestrian safety needs with improved traffic-calming infrastructure, through the use of speed bumps, raised crosswalks, and rapid f lash beacons on high traffic roads and corridors throughout Boston. With reports that the state is expected to receive over $9 billion in municipal aid from the infrastructure bill, and potentially billions more in available grant funding, Boston has a unique opportunity to also scale up our built environment and physica lly change our high traffic roads and corridors to help slow down cars and keep our pedestrians,

c yclists, a nd drivers sa fe.

Councilor Flynn ha s long advocated that pedestrian safety is one of the most critical issues we face in Boston, as our infrastructure must catch up to the pace of development and population growth over recent decades to ensure the safety of neighbors, children, our seniors and persons with disabilities. Over the la st several years, Councilor Flynn recom mended mu lt iple 12 Point Street Safety plans to the city, called for hearings on infrastructure and reducing the speed limit to 20 mph, and advocated for speeding cars to be declared a Public Health Emergency due to a number of serious and fatal crashes in District 2 and across the city.

This significant investment from the federal government

will undoubtedly help Boston’s recovery and set the stage for a brighter future to address our infrastructure needs; fixing our roads and bridges, improving public transportation, addressing climate cha nge, re si lienc y measures and sea level rise. But we would be remiss if we do not also focus on recovering as a safer and more accessible city for all moving forward, with traffic calming infrastructure that actually forces cars to slow down on commuter heavy roads across the City of Boston.

There is a glaring need to invest in infrastructure such as speed bumps, raised crosswalks, rapid f la sh beacons w it h pedestrian islands, road diets, and curb extensions for shorter crosswalks.This presents a chance to scale up our Slow Streets program across the city, so that all

neighborhoods can move forward together in our shared goal of no serious or fatal crashes in Boston.

“As we discuss how we should utilize federal funding to fix our roads, bridges and public transportation, I also believe we must focus on making Boston a safer and more accessible city for all with the help of infrastructure that forces speeding cars to slow down,” said Councilor Flynn. “To make the serious crashes in our city a thing of the past, we need to physically change our roads with speed humps, raised crosswalks, and rapid f lash beacons with pedestrian islands. I will continue to work with my neighbors, colleagues, and the city to make our streets safer for all.”
