Roadtrip Nation Inspires Boston’s Youth
By Ginger DeShaney
Young people from Boys & Girls clubs all over the city battled traffic to gather recently at the Edgerley Family South Boston Club for an inspiring event hosted by Roadtrip Nation, an educational nonprofit on a mission to empower the next generation. It was a night filled with energy and purpose.
Opening the event, Josh Davis, Executive Director of the South Boston Club, welcomed everyone and acknowledged the Clubs’ staffs who work tirelessly every day because they care about the future of the youth they serve. “That’s what everything is about today,” he said.
The spotlight then shifted to the team from Roadtrip Nation, who had just rolled into Boston
in their signature bright green RV. But, as they explained, Roadtrip Nation is much more than a colorful RV — it’s a platform dedicated to helping young people chart their own course in life. For over 20 years, Roadtrip Nation has crisscrossed the country, interviewing inspiring individuals from all walks of life and creating videos. Their goal: to show youth that there is no single path to success and that it’s possible to turn interests into fulfilling careers.
“We believe that learning and growth can happen far beyond just the classroom walls,” one of the presenters said. The Roadtrip Nation team encouraged attendees to explore their own interests, set goals for the future, and use the resources available to them

A Southie Tradition Is Back!

Please join perhaps as many as 5,000 South Bostonians to celebrate the return of the “Children’s Magical Halloween Castle” inside Fort Independence on Castle Island.
The massive green doors on the Fort’s sally port will open wide on Saturday, October 26, and Sunday,
October 27, from 12 noon until 4 p.m. each day. All are welcome, especially the young folks, to view the stunning Halloween displays within the Fort. Both adults and children are encouraged to come in their Halloween costumes. And admission is free. The Castle Island Association (the “CIA”) began holding the Children’s Magical

Hearing on Public Safety & Quality of Life Issues at Mass & Cass
Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn, Councilor Tania Fernandes-Anderson, and At-Large Councilor Henry Santana will hold a hearing to discuss ways to provide public safety support and address quality of life issues at Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard (Mass & Cass) next Tuesday, October 22nd at 10am. The hearing will address the critical need to enhance city response and services, and will discuss strategies to provide support and resources for those who live and work in the area. The discussion will
include City officials, stakeholders from the business, residential and nonprofit community in Roxbury, South End, Dorchester, and South Boston.
Since the closure of the city’s Long Island recovery campus in the Fall of 2014, the opioid crisis has continued to drive those battling substance use disorder to Mass & Cass, where they can seek nearby methadone treatment or a bed at cityrun shelters. While the encampments are removed, crowds continue to gather daily in the area, and violence and illegal activities, such as open-air drug
dealing and drug use, have persisted. These activities have also spread to Roxbury, South End, Dorchester, South Boston and Downtown, which has negatively impacted residents and businesses. Trash, used needles, and human waste are also commonly reported in these neighborhoods.
“Mass & Cass continues to pose public safety and quality of life challenges for our neighbors, residents and businesses on a daily basis,” said Councilor Flynn. “We need to continue to provide treatment and recovery services for people

Well, to start with, out of the 32 teams in the NFL, 24 of them have played six regular season games to date, and eight teams have played just five. The pro football season is now one-third over. The
New England Patriots, of course, have won only one (1) single game. Along with five other teams who’ve won just one game (three in the AFC, two in the NFC), the Pats now sit at the bottom of the League’s standings. Kansas City and Minneapolis are both unbeaten; Houston and Detroit have lost only once.

We mention this not to criticize New England, but to emphasize that the Pats certainly won’t be either Conference or League champions this year. And in a regular season of just 17 games, the chances of their even making the Playoffs is remote.
So watch the Patriots for enjoyment and to see how much they grow for the rest of 2024. Their defense will improve, but rebuilding an entire team takes years! Let’s see what Robert Kraft, Jerod Mayo, and company get done this season. Start with the Patriots’ next game, which they’ll be playing in London this coming Sunday morning. They take on the Jacksonville Jaguars (another AFC one-game winner); kickoff is at 9:30 a.m. EDT (NFLN/WCVB ).
If you’d like a number to keep your eye on, watch how quick QB Drake Mayo’s reflexes become as the season progresses. He takes too many steps right now, partly due to gaps in the offensive line. Recall that epic 17-16 game against the Saints on December 5, 2022, and how much a 45-year-old Tom Brady got done in the game’s final three seconds. That’s something to aim for in the long term, so get out your stopwatch this season!
There isn’t much to say about the Red Sox. In 2024, they won an undistinguished 81 games for an even .500 percentage. They badly need pitching in 2025, first and foremost. As you know, Major League baseball has become a game that’s much
with substance use issues; however, we must arrest individuals who are breaking the law, including those who continue to deal drugs and prey on vulnerable people, as well as others committing acts of violence.”
To provide in-person or written testimony, please contact Shane Pac at Shane.Pac@boston.gov. This hearing will be held at the Iannella Chamber in Boston City Hall and live-streamed at boston.gov/citycouncil-tv. For more information, contact Councilor Flynn’s office at 617635-3203 or Ed.Flynn@Boston.gov.
more than half defensive in nature, despite all the time the media spends talking about hitting and players with high batting averages.
More about the Boston Bruins later – it’s very early in their season. Like the Sox, they also have a .500 record, but their games played are just 2W-2L at this point. The only real numerical note is about the Bruins’ fourth line (Koepke, Beecher, Kastelic), who scored a baker’s dozen of 13 points in their first four games. The Boston Celtics, after 64 wins (out of 82 played) in the 20232024 regular season, open their current season next Tuesday evening, the 22nd, against the New York Knicks. The Celts were an impressive 4W-1L in their pre-season tilts, after losing last Tuesday’s game against the Raptors in Toronto by a razor thin score of 119-118. The chances for them to earn another NBA Championship – although never certain – are excellent at this point.
The loss to the Raptors, although a pre-season tilt, was a “real game”. It was high scoring and played with intensity until the fourth quarter. Numbers most worth remembering are the times played by centers Luke Kornet (21 minutes) and Al Horford (23 minutes). Kristaps Porzingis, last season’s All-Star starting center, is still recovering from foot surgery and might not be available until year-end. Meanwhile, both Luke and Al can cover.

— including a new platform, The Achievery, a free resource designed to help young people build skills and pursue careers that align with their passions.
From managing an NBA arena to becoming a whitehat hacker, Roadtrip Nation shared inspiring examples of how young people can explore unconventional career paths by blending their unique interests. Throughout the event, the team stressed that every career journey begins with small steps. Whether those steps involve talking to a mentor, volunteering in the community, or simply doing some research online, each action brings young people closer to their dreams.
Those small, simple steps can lead to big, transformative outcomes.
With personal stories from the Roadtrip Nation team and practical tools like The Achievery, the event succeeded in motivating Boston’s youth to dream big, take action, and define their own roads in life.
“I think it’s so important to
let [youth] know that there’s not just one correct path,” said Ezaura Mazza, teen education manager for the South Boston club.
Jannell Simon, 14, of the South Boston club, learned a lot from the sessions. “It’s really interesting,” said the Boston Latin School student. “It helps people get a sense of what they want to do. It’s not just for the money. You can do stuff that you actually like.”
Jannell is planning for a more stable job, like architecture, and singing and making music on the side, combining two passions.
Dante Cannon, 16, of Boston Arts Academy, said the session was really cool, and
that he’ll be taking one step at a time to get to bigger steps.
In the words of one Roadtrip Nation presenter, “We have this idea around here that since your future career is going to be something that you spend so much of your life doing, you might as well pick something that you’re interested in so you can love going to work every day. It’s just all about being happy.”
According to the Roadtrippers, career exploration is not about finding any old job. It’s about taking what you like and trying to turn it into a career that you love.
“When you’re not sure what you want to do with your life, it can feel a bit overwhelming,
but guess what? You don’t have to make the exact right choice right now, and you don’t have to make any big, splashy decisions about your future,” said a RoadTripper in a video. “You can start with just one little drip.
“Eventually, one of those drips will cause a ripple effect; it’ll create a way that pushes you in a whole new direction for what comes next. Then you can start planning followup actions that get progressively bigger, more involved, and take more time. Keep trying more and more actions, learning more and growing more. And eventually all those little drips will become one big, huge splash.”

throughout the city from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends (October 19-20 and 26-27), 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, (October 22 and 29), and 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays (October 24 and 31). For a full list of early voting locations and dates and times, visit here.
All early voting sites are equipped with electronic poll books for voter check in. Early voting locations will be staffed with multilingual poll workers and over the phone interpretation. All sites are fully accessible to voters with disabilities, including electronic ballot marking devices at every location. For more information on accessible voting click here.
The City of Boston is working with two prominent cultural institutions to serve as early voting sites. The Museum of Fine Arts and The Institute of Contemporary Art Boston will host early voting sites. These sites expand access to voting within the Fenway and Seaport neighborhoods and underscore Boston’s proud cultural sector and history of civic engagement. The ICA was an early voting site in 2022. This is the first time the MFA will serve as an early voting location.
“A museum at the intersection of contemporary art and civic life, the ICA is where Bostonians gather to share experiences, conversations and reflections on the ideas and issues of our time,” said Kelly Gifford, Deputy Director of the ICA. “We are thrilled that the City of Boston has selected the ICA as an early voting location and welcome all registered Boston residents to visit the ICA for early voting this fall.”
“We’re proud to serve as an early voting location to support Bostonians as they fulfill their civic
responsibility. We take our role as a resource for our community seriously, and hope that voters will also choose to spend time in our galleries to find inspiration during election season,” said Director of the MFA, Matthew Teitelbaum. “Art has played a role in shaping ideas about democracy for centuries, and we’ll have a new exhibition on view that will explore connections between past and present.”
The Institute of Contemporary Art Boston early voting site will be open on Tuesday, October 22 and Tuesday, October 29 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Museum of Fine Arts early voting site will be open on Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Vote By Mail
Voters are encouraged to vote prior to Election Day through early voting or voting by mail. Registered voters may apply for a vote by mail ballot through the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s website or by visiting the Election Department in room 241 at City Hall. Voting by mail allows voters to fill out their ballot at home on their own time and return their ballot through the mail or by placing it into one of many ballot boxes across the city.
Ballots sent through the mail must be postmarked by Tuesday, November 5 and reach the Election Department by 5 p.m. on Friday, November 8, or Friday, November 15 if sent from outside the United States. Ballots returned directly to the Election Department by hand must be delivered by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5. Likewise, ballot boxes will not accept any ballots after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5. Voters are strongly encouraged to mail in or drop off ballots ahead of these deadlines.
Continued from Page 1 Halloween Castle volunteers, who’ll be handling a variety of challenging tasks. Simply moving the extensive Halloween decorations out of storage and unpacking them to be mounted took about 20 people. Another 35 people volunteered to fill thousands of Trick-or-Treat giveaway bags; 35 more volunteers will see to dismantling the Halloween decorations and packing them away for 2025 after the event. Coverage and managing the event itself on October 26-27 will involve about 50 folks (most of them in costume). In addition to Pat, South Boston residents Bob, Linda and Eileen gave up their Columbus Holiday last Monday to volunteer for putting up the Halloween decorations.
Halloween Castle many years ago; it quickly became a much-anticipated annual occurrence. However, over the last five years, South Boston has missed the Children’s Magical Halloween Castle, which last occurred in October of 2019. The pandemic in 2020, coupled with a lack of volunteers after COVID 19 had peaked, triggered its demise.
Credit for the Halloween Castle’s revival belongs to CIA Vice President Pat Reid and the remarkable corps of volunteers she has assembled. After deciding to bring this South Boston event back to life, Pat spent much of her summer talking it up and holding public meetings at the Branch Library. As of now, she has assembled over 100
Please note that there will be nine (9) “rooms” on display at the 2024 Children’s Magical Halloween Castle. The first four (4) will include the Wizard of Oz, pumpkins, Snow White, and pirates. If you are bringing some very young children, you might want to exit at that point so they don’t become too frightened. After those “rooms”, there are five (5) more “Spookier” displays – the Devil’s Den, Witches, a monster room, and a coffin room that leads to a decorated hallway out to the Fort’s parade ground. The parade ground will be decorated also and is a great place for youngsters to play for a while. And there’ll be storytelling
episodes narrated by Paula Fleming, who many will remember as a much-loved Branch Librarian here in South Boston.
While you’re at the Children’s Magical Halloween Castle, take a moment to give a grateful thought to Pat Reid, the CIA, and the volunteers for all they accomplished by bringing back “The Children’s Magical Halloween Castle” in this year of 2024.
A Halloween Castle visit to Fort Independence will show you and your family some real history, too. The Fort was originally built to defend Boston Harbor and the colonial City of Boston, which was called the “City on the Hill” back in 1630 by John Winthrop, the first Governor of Massachusetts. The structure you see today is actually the eighth Fort, designed and built by
Brigadier General Sylvanus Thayer and ultimately completed in 1851. Even as recently as 80 years ago, the Fort still served as a military communications link during the Second World War
Some parts of the Fort are being repaired, so please stay in the areas where there are Halloween decorations. Also, the Fort’s piping for drinking water is now being replaced. Please bring bottled water of your own, especially for the kids. And just one more reminder – we’ll repeat that admission to the Children’s Magical Halloween Castle is completely free, but if you wish, you can make a donation to the CIA. Do this by mailing your check to the Castle Island Association, Box 342, at South Boston’s U.S. Branch Post Office, 444 East Third Street, MA 02127.
Rep Biele Honors Boston Sword & Tuna
State Representative David Biele is honored to announce that Boston Sword & Tuna is a 2024 recipient of the “Making it in Massachusetts” Manufacturing Award presented by the Massachusetts Legislative Manufacturing Caucus. This award is given in recognition of outstanding leadership skills and achievements in the manufacturing industry. Boston Sword & Tuna was presented with this award as part of the 9th Annual Manufacturing Awards Ceremony.
Each year, the Massachusetts Legislative Manufacturing Caucus hosts the Manufacturing Awards Ceremony to highlight and celebrate the successes of local companies across the Commonwealth. This recognition is reserved for Massachusettsbased companies that exemplify what it means to “make it in Massachusetts” and propel their industry towards continued
growth and innovation. This year, over 50 diverse Massachusettsbased companies were selected by legislators from across the Commonwealth to be recognized at the awards ceremony.
“Michael Scola and I want to thank Rep. Biele for acknowledging our efforts in the Boston fish business,” said Larry Dore, President, Boston Sword & Tuna. “We have had support from Massport and all of our elected officials to realize our ambitious plan to build a stateof-the-art seafood processing plant on the Waterfront. We are humbled by this honor.”
Located in South Boston, Boston Sword & Tuna provides fresh, sustainable seafood to retailers, supermarkets, wholesalers, and consumers. Over several generations, Boston Sword & Tuna has grown exponentially and expanded its product line, adding new divisions as well as
prepared foods to its offerings.
The growth and success of this family-owned business necessitated expansion into a freestanding 60,000 sq/ft state-of-theart facility which provides SQF Certification, the highest standard of food safety and operational management in the industry, allowing Boston Sword & Tuna to meet consumer and retail demand while adapting to changing trends in the seafood industry and creating good paying jobs.
“Companies and manufacturers across the
Commonwealth are leading in innovation and I was honored to nominate Boston Sword & Tuna for their outstanding achievements in the seafood industry,” said Rep. Biele. “Our local businesses are the backbone of our economies and the story of Boston Sword and Tuna, as a family owned-business that started on the docks of the Boston Fish Pier and has grown to become one of the largest and most trusted seafood providers in the country, is worthy of recognition and celebration. Congratulations to the entire team at Boston Sword & Tuna.”
Coming in over South Boston
There was no holiday last Monday (Columbus Day or any other day) at Logan Airport. All day long, the landings on Logan’s south runway followed each other like clockwork – every two minutes without a stop. The clouds were very low, so the planes appeared to drop out of nowhere as they flew over Pleasure Bay. They rustled the leaves on Day Boulevard’s trees in passing but all of them cleared Conley Terminal, which was also very busy. And then, they landed safely at Logan.
South Boston’s Monday Marketplace Has Expanded
Originally, Riverdale Farm from Groton was the sole Farmer’s Market vendor on 2024’s spring-to-fall Mondays in South Boston’s Perkins Square. They are an excellent marketeer, who vends the freshest possible produce of all kinds. They are still offering corn on the cob, for example. Since opening last spring, they’ve since been joined by CAPO, our local restaurant (baked goods and sweets). And more recently, Market Garden (herbals, organics) from Norwell has opened their own stand. Make it a Monday occasion to stop by there while the month of October lasts.
Increasing the Veterans Property Tax Exemption
Boston City Councilors Ed Flynn and Brian Worrell will hold a hearing to discuss increasing Veterans Property Tax Exemption next Tuesday, October 22nd, at 2pm. In August this year, Governor Maura Healey signed the historic Honoring, Empowering and Recognizing Our Servicemembers and Veterans Act, also known as the HERO Act. The act includes comprehensive spending and policy initiatives, such as benefits and property tax exemptions, to improve veterans welfare. This hearing will discuss expansions to property tax exemptions to provide the highest possible property tax relief for our veterans. Residents can provide in-person or written testimony by contacting Shane Pac at Shane.Pac@ boston.gov. This hearing will be held in person at the Iannella Chamber in Boston City Hall, and will be livestreamed at boston.gov/city-council-tv.
According to 2022 U.S. Census estimates, Boston has over 13,000
veterans, with the largest age group being 75 and older. Currently, property tax exemptions for veterans are limited to specific groups, including Purple Heart recipients and disabled veterans, with a maximum exemption of $400 for FY25. The recently passed HERO Act allows Boston to increase this exemption. With over $500 million available through the legislation, the City of Boston is financially positioned to offer a maximum property exemption of $840 starting in FY26.
“Our brave veterans who have served our country deserve our utmost care, respect and support,” said Councilor Flynn. “I look forward to working with Councilor Worrell and the administration to increase the amount of property tax exemption so that we can provide meaningful financial relief to our veterans and military families in Boston.”
