es, Porter Square Books opened its brand new branch store Monday – at 50 Liberty Drive in the South Boston Seaport.

A s you’ll notice from our headline and picture captions, Porter Square Books calls its new branch “Boston Edition”. That’s a highly fitting name for it – Porter Square Books’ main store and head office

REAL ACCESS!

is located in Cambridge at Porter Square (of course), near the border with Somerville. “Boston Edition” not only signifies an expansion into a new urban area; that name is even more fitting when you consider that it is South Boston’s only book store. A very welcome addition to our ol’ home town is now part of our new Seaport District.

When you visit 50 Liberty Drive, be sure to say hello to the Manager of Porter Square Books: Boston Edition. Her name is Katherine Nazzaro. She brings several years of bookstore sales/ marketing experience to the Boston Edition, including a year spent at the main store in Porter Square. Katherine characterizes herself as “a lover of books”. Her education includes a degree in English from Bridgewater State.

The Rocks at Harbor Way Park Opens

T

here are openings, and then there are other openings. But Wednesday night’s opening of the Rocks at Harbor Way Park was an extremely joyful celebration.

No other words could possibly describe this event adequately.

The rocks are carefully

placed within the Park. Set in the middle of a green space filled with plantings and trees approaching their fall foliage spectacular, they are remarkably beautiful. The brilliant sunset yesterday was almost unreal in its effect. An estimated 500 guests showed up for the gala opening.

Congressman Backs Bridget-Nee Walsh in City Council Race

Lynch, who has served as a Congressman since 2001, and prior to his service in Washington served as a State Representative and President of Ironworkers Local 7, represents one of the most significant endorsements in the City Council races thus far.

The opening program was excellent – brief, to the point, and very well-spoken, right up until the ribbon-cutting. Yanni Tsipis, Senior Vice President at WS Development spoke first.

He thanked everyone concerned with the creation of the Park.

In a nice touch, he emphatically expressed his gratitude to the building trades members and the construction firms, who were the people who actually performed all the skilled, hands-on work that went into developing the Seaport. something from our indigenous American sassafras tree, which most of us didn’t realize is a basic component of root beer. Michael Soares, who is an Instructor in the ever-popular Seaport Sweats, then spoke about his own feeling of the Seaport community that is developing. The opening program was closed by Amy Prange, a development team member with WS. She well and truly cut the evergreen ribbon,

which symbolically opened the Park for everyone. Yes, everyone!

The Park ’s features are lessons to us all. For example, the Park captures its rain water and uses that to irrigate nearby buildings’ grounds. And have you ever heard a tree sing? Check out their audio installation called “PlantWave” that results in singing trees. Many of the rocks in the park are what are known as “glacial erratics” – do glaciers really make mistakes? Eight species of trees adorn the Park, and are listed. Bring your kids and see if they can find all eight; you don’t have to bring them all the way out to the countryside for a lesson about nature. The writer freely confesses that he has never heard of a “downy serviceberry” tree. Never, ever!

But the Park has them now.

Rep. David Biele Backs Erin Murphy For City Council At-Large

tate Representative David Biele, who represents South Boston and parts of Dorchester, has endorsed Erin Murphy to be Boston’s next At-Large City Councilor, praising her commitment to public safety and her heartfelt efforts to eradicate the scourge of substance abuse and addiction.

With less than a month before the November 2nd Municipal Election, Rep. Biele’s support represents the latest sign of Erin’s surging support across the city. United States Representative Stephen F. Lynch, State Senator Nick Collins, and City Councilor Ed Flynn -- all of South Boston -- have previously endorsed Erin’s candidacy.

“Erin has proved both during her campaign and in her long history as a community activist that she is responsive, she is accessible, and she shows up,” said Rep. Biele. “I know she will bring those same qualities to City Hall. And she is fiercely devoted to ensuring that every neighborhood in our city is a safe neighborhood,

and that we have enough resources to provide recovery services for those dealing with addiction. She has always been an independent voice and she will make a fantastic city councilor.”

“People are looking for leaders who can understand what their lives are like,” Biele added. “Erin taught in the Boston Public Schools for 22 years, has raised her family here as a single mother, and been an outspoken advocate for her neighborhood. Erin finished a strong fourth in a crowded field of 17 in the September 14th Preliminary Election, and has continued to amass support in the weeks since. Her outreach has extended to every neighborhood in the city, the same energy she would bring to the City Council.

ctober is Polish American Heritage Month.

This observance is an even 40 years old this year of 2021; Polish American Heritage Month was officially recognized as such back in the Presidency of Ronald Reagan. Its origins stem all the way back to the first colonial settlement in Jamestown, Virginia – the first Polish settlers in the New World, later to become America, arrived during the month of October.

Club (at 82 Boston Street) this Sunday, October 17, between 12 noon and 6 p.m.

The Club is holding a Heritage Party at that time. They have arranged a great event for you, including a DJ and costumed dancers. Due to the COVID19 pandemic, it has been a long time since the Club has been open to the public – now is your chance to see what’s inside and to help them celebrate.

While you are at the Club, take good looks at the social bar area on the Club’s ground f loor and the magnificent ballroom on the second f loor. Did you know that you can rent the Club premises for your own event?

Was It the Greatest Weekend?

T

he Patriots pulled one out last Sunday afternoon, the Red Sox presented Boston with three remarkable prizes (gift-wrapped) leading to a Grand Prize, and we were treated to the 125th Boston Marathon after a two-and-a-half year absence. Could this have been the greatest athletic weekend in all of Boston’s history? It’s certainly arguable that’s so. Boston had nothing but good news in three of our key sports. So let’s take a look.

The 125th Marathon went off without a hitch, unless you count the endless walking up, down, and around Copley Square, made necessar y by those equally endless temporary stand-up fence barriers. To be exact, it had been all of two years, four months, three weeks, and three days since our last Boston Marathon on April 15, 2019, which was won by Lawrence Cherono of Kenya in 2:07:57.

Benson K ipruto, a lso from Kenya, won the October 11, 2021, Boston Marathon in 2:09:51.

And another Kenyan, Diana Kipyokei, won the 2021 Women’s Marathon with a 2:24:46 time.

This writer grew up with the Boston Marathon, and watched it grow to well over 20,000 qualif ied entrants – men, women, wheelcha irs, and nowadays, “handcycles”.

Crowds, a lways large, now exceed 500,000 spectators, along with worldwide media coverage. And yet, the Boston Marathon is not an “officially sanctioned” event, because the course drops too much and has “Heartbreak Hill” (actually four of them), starting at Mile 16.

And it was so-o-o good (!) to have the Boston Marathon back for real after more than a twoyear absence. Now we know how Pheidippides must have felt when he ran from the Marathon battle against the Persians to Athens to announce (with joy!), “We won!”

On Su nd ay, ju st 20 hours before this year’s 125th Marathon, the Patriots got their defense going in the second half to (barely) rescue their game against the Houston Texans, 25-22. The winning points were part of a 20+ year-long Patriots’ secret – they all too often win with late-in-the-game field goals, which they did in this game also.

Do you recall them winning the Super Bowl in 2001 by a field goal during a blizzard, kicked by Adam Vinatieri when he could barely even see the goalposts?

But a trio of Red Sox wins that began last Friday, continued on Sunday, and ended with a playoff series win Monday evening was the biggest athletic news this last weekend. The Sox pasted the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday evening, running up a 14-6 score after the Rays bombed Chris Sale for five runs in the first inning. Then, one of the oddest recent baseball games unfolded – a 13th inning, walkoff winning score of 6-4 by the Sox here in Fenway Park when Christian Vazquez homered. The five-hour contest gave the Red Sox a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five playoff series against the Rays.

The thriller came Monday evening, after the Marathon and all the other weekend excitements had gone by (it had been a threeday Holiday weekend – you figure out what its name should have been). E-Rod Rodriguez threw five very solid early innings. The Sox quickly ran up a 5-0 scoring edge, but then unfortunately had to watch it disappear until there was a 5-5 eighth inning tie.

Garrett Whitlock held the Rays from scoring further in the top of the eighth and the ninth. Then, Vazquez led off with a single and was advanced to third by sacrifice

hits. He was subbed by pinch runner Danny Santana, who ran home the game-winning, walkoff score of 6-5, on a line drive to left field by Enrique Hernandez.

That gave the Sox two (yes, 2) walk-off wins in the series.

The Red Sox now face the White Sox or the Astros for the American League top dog’s slot, beginning tomorrow. And this month, we also await the Bruins and the Celtics taking the ice and the parquet, respectively.

Check out the Boo-tanical Garden, a new and fun offering from October 20th-31st. This fun and spooky experience will feature two different options: a lights-on, hands-on experience perfect for littles (Wednesday - Friday) and a spooky experience for kids and families who want a spookier encounter with these wild and wacky plants (Saturday-Sunday). This is an add-on experience and separate tickets are required to enter the Boo-tanical Garden.

asically, this is a written list of exhibits, along with a few other artistic activities, happening in South Boston’s Fort Point and Seaport during the rest of October. There are, of course, many of these - October 2021 will be quite an art month here.

For years, South Boston has been home to a huge number of artists.

The Fort Point art colony partly sprang from the numerous artists occupying live-work studios they converted from industrial lofts over the last century. Other South Boston artists lived, worked, and created in The Distillery and the warehouses along L Street. Many of these creative types have moved on as South Boston has become more developed and (much) more costly. These days, you’ll find them in Lawrence/ Lowell or along the South Coast.

But many others remain right here.

In addition, we have had major art institutions move into South Boston. In 2005, the Institute of Contemporary Art (the ICA) moved from the Back Bay onto a site next to Pier Four overlooking Boston Harbor.

The ICA was the City of Boston’s first new art museum in more than a century. Then, Artists for Humanity (A for H) built and subsequently expanded their EpiCenter art complex at A and Second. Grub Street has just now relocated from their Downtown Boylston Street location onto Fan Pier; Porter Square Books has joined them, opening a branch in the Grub Street complex. It is South Boston’s only book store. The Fort Point Arts Community (FPAC) at 300 Summer Street just turned 40;

Fort Point Open Studios takes place this coming weekend from Friday, October 15, until Sunday, October 17. Look it up at fortpointos.org for more details.

Be sure to stop by the FPAC Gallery at 300 Summer Street during these Open Studios.

Black-owned BOS, the Best of Boston pop-up shops this year, will hold their final pop-up Sunday afternoon, October 17, from 12 noon until 6 p.m. View their many arts and crafts located at 85 Seaport Boulevard on the Seaport Common.

Also, look up Grub Street, the unique creative writing center that has just finished relocating to Fan Pier. Check out the branch of Porter Square Books, which opened last Monday along with Grub Street.

SPOKE Gallery at 850 Summer Street is giving a Gallery Talk on Thursday evening, October 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. The public is invited.

Artists for Humanity at A and Second will hold their second Open Studio on Wednesday evening, October 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. – tours + refreshments + networking, including gallery talks.

Bring your children to the Children’s Museum this month.

They have an artistic immersion experience they’ve named “Sometimes I Also Love It When It Rains”.

And finally, assuming the weather allows, simply walk along Fort Point Channel and view the works of art around and floating upon the Channel itself. Then, amble over to South Boston’s newest park – The Rocks at Harbor Way, a unique “installation” that was dedicated and opened to the public yesterday.

As the largest artists colony in New England, South Boston means “art”!

by Rick Winterson Caroline Barlow (they/them/their) is a professional artist, whose particular artistic specialty is Editorial Illustration. They graduated this year from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, much better known simply as “MassArt”. This was actually quite an accomplishment, considering the devastating effect of the COVID19 pandemic on classes and especially on artists’ studio work.

SB Catholic Academy News Grades 6A & B Class of 2022 We are excited to have the 6th grade, South Boston Catholic Academy Class of 2022, leading the new school year! This year we have two th 6 grade classes lead by Ms. Hoisl and Ms. Smith. The 6th graders took part in our first school Mass for this school year and did a fantastic job with the readings at this Mass. Father Casey, the Pastor and Father Boyle, the Parochial Vicar were the celebrants at this Mass at St. Brigid Church. The students were eager to get back in the classroom, and are off to a great start. We look forward to seeing what this year brings for our wonderful 6th graders!
