SUNDAY NOVEMEBER 3RD
Even though it’s a so-called “off-year election, the races for elected offices in Boston are hugely important for Boston’s (and South Boston’s) future. Whoever is elected on November 5 will govern our City for many years – or perhaps even for decades! Are you interested in the ten most (10) important reasons to vote? If so, please read on. South Boston Online has them for you. #10 - Yes, we know: This isn’t a Presidential election. The races are all local and it’s an odd-numbered year. This election year even ends in “13, an unlucky number. So vote anyhow. Show the nation that Boston’s voters don’t vote according to trends or out-of-date patterns. We vote because it’s our duty. #9 - Vote because we are privileged to have many, very capable candidates. It’s your right and your duty to vote for the candidate you believe is the most capable. When everyone votes, it’s a “winwin situation for all residents of Boston (and South Boston). #8 - Think of your vote as an investment in Boston’s children and their futures. Cast your own vote

ments in our City are taking place in South Boston? But we have only 10% of Boston’s area and just 5% of the City’s population. Vote for the candidates who can best control this explosive pace of development in South Boston. #6 - “All politics are local”, to use Tip O’Neill’s well-known saying. And there’s been a lot (too much) of talk recently about “outside campaign money” from “professional campaigners”. Vote the way you yourself choose. Pay no attention to pressure groups from distant locations. What do they know about South Boston? #5 - Vote because you don’t want other people making your decisions for you. You’re the one who decides which candidates get elected. No one else. Only you. #4 - Boston is already a nationwide (worldwide?) center for sports, culture, history, medical care, higher education, entrepreneurial businesses, and many other unique attractions. But we can always do better. Your vote will only help us improve our already good quality of life. #3 - What are you concerned about? Jobs? Schools? The arts? Your security? The environment? Even parking for your car? Doesn’t taking a couple of minutes to vote on November 5 make sense when you look at the 2013 elections this way? #2 - After you think about the issues and your own concerns, remember that your vote will determine Boston’s (and South
In our October 10 issue, South Boston Online wrote of the urgent need for modernizing Marian Manor. The Manor’s Administrator, Sr. Philip Ann, O. Carm., explained to us in an interview that people are living longer, and that caregiving for the elderly is becoming both more sophisticated and more successful since the 1990s, due to more advanced techniques and facilities. After 60 years on its Dorchester Street site, the Manor needs a major upgrade. Equally as important, Sr. Philip Ann stressed that the “pursuit of excellence” at Marian Manor includes a high quality of life for its residents – access to their families, a circle of friends within the Manor, and enjoyable amenities. Thus, there are two reasons for Marian Manor’s Thursday evening fundraiser at the Fairmont Copley Plaza on November 14 (please reserve that evening). This article is based on an interview with Harry Uhlman, Barbara Gill, and Joe Nee. It deals with the Marian Manor tradition as a “place to turn to”, where loving care is unfailingly provided to the elderly, including those undergoing short-term rehabilitation who’ll return to their outside lives and pursuits. So there are really three reasons to celebrate on November 14. Harry Uhlman mentioned that his own mother spent two years at the Manor. He then spoke of the muchmissed Father Jim Lane. Fr. Lane spent his last days at the Manor, and he referred to his stay as “coming home”. His room looked out on National Street, near where Don’t miss out on Trick or Treat on Broadway this Thursday, Halloween, from 4 till 6 p.m. Come in costume (children and adults alike). Be sure to stop by South Boston Online at 700 East Broadway. - Support the South Boston Collab-
he was born. He would reminisce with his visitors about every home and family along National Street. Barbara Gill told about how she said the Rosary with Fr. Lane just as he died. She called Harry immediately to inform him. The ending of this anecdote about the Manor’s care is that this all took place at 3 a.m. in the morning. This story illustrates the Manor’s “open door” policy for visitors. Family members and close friends need never be alone at Marian Manor. Joe Nee’s mother lived at the Manor for several years. One of the people who cared for her was known as Simeon; he came from Barbados. Joe smiles as he recalls Patty Regan, a lifelong South Bostonian who took care of his mother also. Simeon and Patty became like members of the Nee family because of their devotion to the care of his mother. While taking notes for the article with Harry, Barbara, and Joe, this writer was greatly impressed by the fond memories of the care their near-and-dear ones were given, and how much they enjoyed their stays in the Manor. A brief note to those of you who are new to South Boston: If you have moved into South Boston recently, please know that your near-and-dear ones are also welcome at the Manor. Check it out, and recognize that the facility will be significantly upgraded over the next few years. We certainly hope that your families and friends are all well, but things can happen unexpectedly. Did you know that one of
Marian Manor’s most important services is short-term rehabilitation, designed for those who’ll return to their regular lives? Keep the Manor in mind if you might ever need “a place to turn to”. One final story: Sr. Margaret, O. Carm., is well known in South Boston. It seems as if she has been at Marian Manor (to use a word) “Forever”. Well, in a way, she really has. She’s originally from South Boston and was born in the Carney Hospital, back when the Carney occupied the same site where the Manor now sits. When she graduated from St. Augustine, Sr. Margaret joined the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm (the O. Carm.). After completing numerous assignments within the Carmelite Congregation, she returned to South Boston in 2003 – ten years ago this December – where she became the Development Director of Marian Manor. Sr. Margaret invites you to join her at the Manor’s celebration of 60 years of service on Thursday evening, November 14. It’s a sumptuous dinner party at the classic Fairmount Copley Plaza. Honored guests include novelist Mary Higgins Clark, Carmelite Mother Mark Louis, and noted radio personality Ron Della Chiesa.. Give her a call at the Manor (617-268-3333) and reserve your tickets. See you there.
orative Center by attending Comedy Night at Florian Hall on Friday evening, November 1, 7 p.m. till 12 Midnight. You won’t find a better comedy bill in all of Boston. - There’s a Friendship Party for BFD Firefighter John “Fozzy” Foscaldo

Debate Canceled The City Council Debate that was to be held last Thursday, October 24th was canceled. Although we were all very disappointed, we did not fault any candidates who felt they had not been treated in an appropriate manner. The debate was to be sponsored by eight South Boston Neighborhood Associations. There was a combined effort of all eight Groups to organize the event and we would like to take this opportunity to recognize the efforts of those members involved. All our member representatives take pride in working together, without regard to political affiliations, and we hope that in the future there will be better communications between all the parties involved. We would like to thank the campaign coordinators for their efforts, and wish them well in the upcoming election. We hope that the turn of events did not inconvenience anyone. Why I Support John Connolly for Mayor of Boston BY REP. NICK COLLINS
My decision to endorse and support John Connolly for mayor is based on his commitment to preserving the integrity of our community here in South Boston, his courage to enter the race first to challenge the status quo and his vision for Boston. Lastly, his experience and knowledge of the city budget as a member of the City Council Ways and Means Committee provides
John with the insight needed to maintain our fiscal health. John Connolly is committed to working closely with us to ensure that South Boston has the police presence we need and that our voice is heard on development by instituting housing policies that work for our seniors and the middle class. John will be dedicated to creating economic opportunity for all, not just the influential. John Connolly has helped craft 6 consecutive city budgets. He
knows how critical the City’s fiscal health is to his ability to deliver on the important education, public safety and housing initiatives that he envisions. John Connolly’s vision for Boston includes as its cornerstone the creation of a great school system that cuts the bureaucracy and re-directs money into the classroom. John Connolly took the lead on student assignment reform and quality schools close to home will pro-
vide safer and healthier neighborhoods that will keep the middle class families in Boston. My political career has been built on the philosophy that the public interest comes first. South Boston is a community where traditional values and the hope of a new Boston go hand in hand. John Connolly agrees with this view and I will ensure that it helps to guide his administration as we work together for a more inclusive City.

Huge Crowds at 2013 Mystery Castle The Castle Island Association’s Annual Halloween extravaganza was a smash success. It was hard to tell where the exhibits left off and the crowds began. Despite chilly, breezy, partly cloudy days, an estimated 10,000 turned out for the festivities. That may be more than voters on November 5.

Hockey is Her Love
BY KEVIN DEVLIN
Young woman will never forget her hockey experiences, her teammates, and the grown-ups that made it possible.
She learned how to skate in Arnie’s Army and went on to play hockey in the South Boston Youth Hockey League, high school and then college. She has a boatload of memories and cherishes the friendships, camaraderie, and the sacrifices of adults who gave her the opportunity to skate and realize her potential. Hockey was her life and she felt it personified life in Southie. Her name is Melissa Belmonte. When she was young, she played street hockey with her brother Ricky (who played for Boston Latin-scored over 100 points-and for Framingham State) and her cousins, Danny, Chris, Eric, Sean, and Brian. They taught her how to be tough and made her competitive. She looked up to them and wanted to be as good as they were. So after that it was off to the rink. She was admittedly obsessed with hanging there, collecting pucks, and learning how to skate. Melissa continued skating locally in the South Boston Youth Hock-
ey League (SBYHL) and was happy when the league expanded. “I was glad when Teddie Cunniff and Loretta McGarrell started the girl’s teams,” said Melissa. “Dawn Foley and Mary Balaconis took over after that. We were fortunate we had great adults who cared to help and give us the opportunity to continue to play youth hockey.” Melissa continued plugging away and played varsity hockey at Fontbonne High School. In 2001, her squad (21-1) captured the state championship, the first MIAA sanctioned women’s ice hockey title. As a senior, she was a Boston Herald and Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic. She was a league all-star and is a member of the Fontbonne 100-point club. She loved playing at Fontbonne because she was surrounded by talented Southie teammates and friends. They were Jillian Rae, Elizabeth Evans, Jamie Bernardi, and the fabulous Carr twins, Andy and Chrissy. She continued playing hockey at the University of Massachusetts/Boston Campus. Her college hockey credentials are impressive. Just this month, on Thursday, October 10, she was inducted into the UMass/Boston Sports Hall of Fame. She finished second all-time in career points with 157 (76 goals/81 assists) and is one of only four members of the 100-point club. She was named a two-time All-American, and to the ECAC East Second Team All-
Freidnship Party for BFD Firefighter John “Fozzy” Foscaldo and his family! Thursday, Nov. 7th at Florian Hall 7:30-Midnight Raffles, music and Hors d’oeuvres Suggested Donation: $20.00 See you there!
Ricky, Melissa and her dad Richie at the Ceremony.
Conference squad in 2007. Melissa was also selected to the All-Rookie Team and Honorable Mention All-Conference honors in 2004. Her 81 assists stand as the all-time Beacons high mark. She’s second with hat tricks (seven) and multi-point games (eighteen). She scored 53 points as a freshman (second all-time), 40 points as a junior (fifth all-time), and 44 points as a senior (fourth all-time). She’s first in power-play goals in a season with seven, and tied for first in single season hat tricks with four. Her 25 assists as both a freshman and a junior is tied for third most. She’s tied for first with most points in a game with six (on two occasions) and for most goals in a game with four, which she recorded twice. When asked to recall some of her favorite hockey moments, she mentioned her SBYHL Squirt team capturing the state championship. The team was subsequently recognized by cheering onlookers as the players walked in the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. She’ll also never forget the thrill of making good plays and scoring. “I could see the whole ice and loved making quick passes that resulted in good plays for my teams,” said Melissa. “I liked scoring ‘unselfish wrap-around goals.’ In high school and then in college I had a penalty shot and made both of them. I thought it was pretty cool and will never forget it.” Melissa had a terrific hockey career and now’s a busy young lady with
other challenging endeavors. She loves being a teacher’s assistant helping autistic children in the Boston Public Schools. For the past four seasons, she’s coached at Medfield High school. Two former college teammates, Molly Norton and Lauren Duran are on the bench with her. She loves this hockey connection which is so important to her. She still occasionally skates and enjoys rollerblading along the boulevard down to Castle Island. She also likes hiking. She’s currently in training and plans to map out a strategy to eventually hike to the top of the forty-eight, four thousand-foot mountains listed in New Hampshire. It will take some time but she’s always welcomed challenges in her life. Melissa will always cherish the love from her parents throughout the years. Her beloved mom Sally is deceased, but her dad Richie, along with her brother still talk hockey and watch Bruins games together. “My parents are special to me,” said Melissa. “They did so much for me and my brother. They sacrificed a lot. They spent time, energy, and money to give me this opportunity to travel and play hockey. All my great memories are about hockey and I will always value these experiences.” Although she no longer wakes up thinking about how she’ll do in her next game, hockey will always be number one in life.
