The Irish Navy Visits South Boston’s Seaport District by Rick Winterson
S
outh Boston’s Seaport District currently has a guest – an honored guest anchored prominently along the Harborwalk, approximately midway in the stretch between Pier 2 and Pier 4. She’s a member of the Ireland’s Naval Services, an important part of the Irish Defence Forces (Oglaigh nah Eireann). Her name is “Le James Joyce”; her formal duty description is “Offshore Patrol Vessel”. She will depart tomorrow – Friday, the 16th. When we inquired about the reason for docking here in South Boston, we were told that this visit and our tour had to do with “diplomacy” and “military courtesy”, which we interpreted as perhaps being connected with the 21st Anniversary of the 9-11 disaster last Sunday. Le James Joyce is a modern ship, launched and commissioned by Ireland’s Naval Service seven years ago in September, 2015. In addition to her name, she’s identified by the

Built in the Appledore Shipyards in England, Le James Joyce is now assigned a berth at Waterford in Munster. Her overall length is 275 feet, she weighs more than 2,000 tons, and has a crew of 55. She typically cruises at 15 knots but
is capable of short bursts up to 24. At normal cruising speeds, she has a range of 6,000 nautical miles (that’s nearly 7,000 conventional, land-based miles – Le James Joyce is able to cross the Atlantic and return to Ireland on one fueling). Since it’s an island, the Irish
