Boston’s Seaport District currently has a guest – an honored guest anchored prominently along the Harborwalk, approximately midway in the stretch between Pier 2 and Pier 4. She’s a member of the Ireland’s Naval Services, an important part of the Irish Defence Forces (Oglaigh nah Eireann). Her name is “Le James Joyce”; her formal duty description is “Offshore Patrol Vessel”. She will depart tomorrow – Friday, the 16th. When we inquired about the reason for docking here in South Boston, we were told that this visit and our tour had to do with “diplomacy” and “military courtesy”, which we interpreted as perhaps being connected with the 21st Anniversary of the 9-11 disaster last Sunday.

fete was held in the South Boston Branch Library at 646 East Broadway. The occasion: It was the 150th Anniversary of local service by our much-loved Branch Library. Yes, the South Boston Branch Library was first opened in 1872 – it was only the second branch library in the United States when it began lending books to the public. Boston’s Central Library (now in Copley Square) had been founded in 1848; President Ulysses S. Grant had won a second term in office in 1872; and that year, there were only 37 states in the U.S.A. Originally, the Branch Library occupied the second floor of the Masonic building located on West Broadway at the corner of E Street. On October 31, 1957 – 65 years ago – the Branch moved into its present building on East Broadway. It currently holds

around 20,000 volumes and offers a full slate of Library activities. Overall, the entire Boston Public Library with all its Branches is the fourth largest Library in America.

The evening anniversary party began with refreshments, informal conversations with Library patrons and staff, and a welcome from South Boston’s Head Librarian, Jane Bickford. She emphatically thanked her staff and the Branch Library’s patrons – all of those who use the Branch Library. After Jane’s remarks, a few words were spoken by Joe Kebartas, the Chair of

A Quiet Remembrance

Sunday was September 11, 2022 – the 21st Anniversary of the hideous battering of the World Trade Centers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, which used aircraft hijacked after they departed Logan and Newark Airports. A fourth plane that took off from Dulles was heroically “taken back” by its passengers, and it then crashed in Pennsylvania. We have not forgotten that tragedy, especially the 2,977 lives lost. We remember it quietly and with dignity, as shown by these flags along K Street.

shoreline reconnaissance and preventing illegal immigration. During our tour, we were very impressed with the sophisticated navigation bridge with its multiple screens. We were shown the craft that allows the crew to land onshore as needed – an amazing, pontoonhulled, 10-person raft that can travel across the ocean surface as fast as 45 knots – truly a very high speed across water. And even though Le James Joyce has a basic mission of patrol, she boasts some impressive combat weapons as well, such as Browning HMGs – high velocity machine guns, which can fire 500 rounds per minute that travel several miles at well over the speed of sound. On her bow, she has a turreted 76mm Oto Melara naval gun, which is really a small, automatic cannon that fires 85 three-inch projectiles per minute at targets as far as ten miles away.

The return of the first quarter interception by Miami’s defense got their special teams within field goal range essentially right away, so the first three (3) points can’t be credited to the Dolphins’ offense – the Pats defense prevented a touchdown. Then, Miami’s next seven (7) points came from a fumble-6, which resulted from a hole (a big one) in the Pats’

Gabe Branch does like the energy of customers, and waiters, and the mix of “everyone being happy and enjoying themselves when it all goes right,” but he has a deeper driving philosophy summarized this way. “I like providing something inherently for the benefit of someone else, and that also provides benefit for me,” he explained. More than a job, the satisfaction of people with the food and atmosphere is important to him.

offensive line – no credit due to the Miami offense there, either. The Miami Dolphins’ offense can take credit for just ten (10) points – seven (7) late in the first half, three (3) in the second. That really means they ended up scoring a pitifully low total number, when looked at over the entire game. In the NFL, scores around thirty (30), not twenty (20), consistently win regular season games. So yes, the Dolphins won, but really not by all that much.

It isn’t all easy as anyone who knows the restaurant business at any level realizes. “The hours are hard, and COVID was tough, and you are married to the job,” he said, and that is simply a statement of fact in his view.

The Pats’ defense did fairly well – between “pretty good” and “good”. That’s all that can be realistically said about Sunday’s game. So please ignore the boo-birds for now. Let’s just wait and see what happens in Pittsburgh next Sunday. Last Sunday, the Steelers scored just twenty-three (23) points. And won in O/T.

“Just from talking to parents, and even if I picture myself as a kid, I know that I would be looking forward to Friday night. All your friends are there,” Allison said. “I have a lot of people say to me, ‘This reminds me of the old Southie, of being a kid in Southie again.’ People say there are no kids in Southie; they need to come down.”

“It’s fun to watch,” said dad and peewee coach David Byrne. “It’s a community feel with the parents. It really brings everyone together and strengthens the community.”

Flag football is “kind of like a beginner sport for a lot of kids,”

Allison is the founder of Kickoff for Kids, which hosts an all-female flag football fundraising tournament every year. She would bring kids from the Perkins School and the Boys & Girls Club to watch the tournament and they told her it would be cool if there was something like that for them. So, she’s been thinking about it for a while and after getting commitments from her board and others in

“It’s my first time playing,” said Maddix Coughlin, whose mom coaches her team. “It’s fun. A lot of my friends are playing, too.”

“[Allison] is phenomenal,” said Lia. “She is a pillar in this community. I’m glad my kids know her.”

Lia Bianchi and Jessica McCollom have kids playing in the league. “The kids are so excited, especially the girls; they don’t get to play football,” said Jessica.

She gave big shout-outs to Victor Baldassari, Ashley and Jason Coughlin, Jacqueline Beggan, Al Mallon, Lily Joyce, and Lisa Maki for helping get the league off the ground; all the coaches – there are 25 coaches for 16 teams (every girls’ team coach is a participant in her tournament); her board members, who are all very involved; and the referees, who go above and beyond all the time.

Friday Night Lights, the brandnew Kickoff For Kids Youth Flag Football League, has 230 boys and girls ages 6-13 on 16 teams. There’s a girls’ division (ages 7-13), peewee boys (6-8), and junior boys (9-13).

Allison is also grateful for the Southie 3v3, which raised funds for Kickoff For Kids, and, of course, her sponsors: Amazon, Representative David Biele, City Council President Ed Flynn, Gatey CYO, Cronin Group, Massport, Boston Real Estate Capital, and Newmarket Capital.

Then there’s DCR’s Bobby Ferrara, who is always there to support Allison and her organization.

Allison said, which could have contributed to the huge success with the number of signups.

“Our goal is to pay it forward and make sure everyone’s included,” said Allison, who is also the commissioner of the girls’ Gatey CYO program.

While Allison was out and about Saturday after opening night, she said a lot of parents came up to her and told her how awesome Friday Night Lights is.

But Allison is quick to deflect the credit: “It’s not just me; I don’t do it all by myself.”

football action was fast and fierce. The cheering was thunderous. The girls and boys were having a blast on the field and parents couldn’t contain their enthusiasm on the sidelines.

Allison made sure her league didn’t interfere with other Southie activities. “A lot of people were like, ‘We don’t do anything on Friday nights. This is perfect.’ ”

David’s two daughters and son know Allison, too, and wanted to get involved. “Allison is unbelievable. She’s great for

Allison’s nonprofit organization prides itself on inclusivity. There are kids from all over South Boston, including the housing authorities, where Allison used her connections to make sure families knew about the new league.

The electric atmosphere of Friday Night Lights has come to South Boston, thanks to Allison Baker and her hard-working team.

In watching a practice, Lia said she was impressed with the girls and how they played. Added Jessica, “They feel comfortable and they’re encouraged.”

Felicity and Sarah are hoping to participate in the next two sessions: a mosaic class with Emily Bhargava on Sept. 24 and a pottery class with Samantha Hoff (in collaboration with Southie business In Good Company) on Oct. 8.
