Ribbon Cutting Celebrates O’Connor Way Senior Housing

B

oston Mayor Kim Janey cut the ribbon on O’Connor Way Senior Housing Wednesday a f ter no on to of f ic i a l ly welcome home its residents.

“W henever I can cut a ribbon on new housing, or housing that’s affordable, or housing that is for seniors, it is a wonderful day in the city of Boston,” the mayor said.

“We’re really excited to be here today,” Donna Brown, executive d irector of t he South Boston Neighborhood De ve lopment C or p or at ion, said in her opening remarks.

“We completed this project in December and we have not been able to celebrate until now.”

O’Connor Way, which boasts 46 units of affordable housing for the elderly, was developed on vacant land donated by the

Boston Housing Authorit y.

The project was spearheaded through a partnership of the South Boston Neighborhood D e ve lopme nt C or p or a t ion a nd Ca rita s Communities.

As challenging as it can be to just preserve the portfolio of public housing, Kate said, “what we’re trying to do in the last several years is actually add to the

supply of affordable housing in the city. And that’s, for me, what makes this project so special. It’s amazing to create net new 46 units for low-income seniors. It’s an amazing accomplishment.”

Dining out-of-doors, especially in the summertime, means tranquility – another word for “peace”. When the cooking is also a “cook-out”, the delicious outdoor smells bring on an instant, mouth-watering hunger, which is satisfied silently and peacefully because people are busy chewing. Place this kind of event on the side lawn at St. Monica Church, and then add in the efforts of the volunteers. When all that happens, the event really

becomes a St. Monica “Peace Picnic”.

The St. Monica Church Peace Picnic led by Deacon Paul Kline, the Good Samaritans of St. Monica Church served an all-you-can-eat banquet of hot dogs and hamburgers, along with several salads, anchored by that cookout staple – potato salad. The cooking was performed by a crew of five officers from BPD Station C-6, as part of their mission of Community Service. And dessert was part of the treat.

That was the case last weekend, at the Herman Miller opening at 83 Pier 4 Boulevard in the South Boston Seaport. On Saturday afternoon, the brand new Herman Miller retail shop here held a gala reception, to which the public was very definitely invited. Everyone was welcome.

In addition, the festivities included hands-on cookie making by Flour in the outdoor seating kiosk in front of No. 83 Pier 4, as well as a block party around the corner in Harbor Way Park.

We were fortunate to have an interview with Rachel Lipka, who is Herman Miller’s Associate Marketing Manager and came up to the opening from New York. She pointed out that over the 115 years that Herman Miller has existed, office work has become the most common type of job. That has required carefully designed office furniture, of course. Furthermore, now that working-from-home (WFH) has mushroomed and will likely continue to grow, the need for top-quality WFH office furniture (especially chairs) has also grown very rapidly. She mentioned

that their new Store Manager’s name is Chris Findlen, who’ll join the Seaport store this week.

Rachel closed out our interview by stating how excited she was to be here at Herman Miller’s South Boston Seaport opening.

As a small side anecdote, the hostess from Flour who ran the cookie-making at Herman Miller’s opening reception is named Tess Wankum. We asked her if she knew Mike Wankum, the Channel 5 WCVB weatherman.

Tess replied, “I’m his daughter, and he’s been working around the clock on forecasting Hurricane Henri.” In some ways, it’s a small (but beautiful) world, isn’t it?

The 2021 Street Festival is ON!

he South Boston Street Festival committee, in partnership with the South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation, is pleased and proud to announce that the 21st South Boston Street Festival will take place on Saturday, September 18, 2021. As always, the Festival area will extend along East Broadway from I Street to L Street, which will be closed off to bus/auto/truck traffic between the Festival’s hours of 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

South Boston’s Annual Street Festival goes back to the turn of the century – indeed, to the turn of the Millennium. The very first Street Festival took place in the Year 2000. That initial Festival proved to be so popular and wellattended that it immediately

became a Southie tradition. The Street Festival hasn’t missed a year since then, except (necessarily, of course) for last year during the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic.

And please be assured that every public precaution/protocol that is required for COVID-19 pandemic safety will be observed at this year’s 2021 Street Festival.

Over the last 20 years, the South Boston Street Festival has grown to include more than 100 local merchants, restaurants, artists, service providers, and community organizations. If you have been at prior Street Festivals, you know that many thousands of people from all over Boston will attend.

There will be the usual two stages (at the Library and in front of Stop & Shop), both featuring live music and performances throughout the Street Festival’s hours. It’ll be a fun-filled day for your whole family.

The following are quick updates on the Street Festival, which South Boston Online will update further as the Festival draws nearer.

New Businesses Taking Part: Eight new South Boston businesses along East and West Broadway are taking part in the Street Festival. We have listed them alphabetically – Boddhi Boutique, CLT Method, House of Ivy, In Good Company, Liz on E, Lulu Green, Olga’s Kafe, and On Center.

In addition to many prominent South Boston artists, the 2021 Street Festival is pleased to announce that the Fort Point Arts Community (FPAC) will exhibit for the first time this year. Look for them.

Seven Onsite Restaurants: The Broadway, Café Porto Bello, Deja Brew, Grey’s Hall, The Paramount, The Playwright, and Roza Lyons.

Food to Go: Lulu Green, Publico, Sals R istora nte & Pizzeria, The Sausage Guy. The entertainment will be non-stop on both stages, as well as including street performances along East Broadway. Country fans will be delighted to know that Houston Bernard will be here to provide C&W and upbeat rockabilly.

Guilty Pleasure, Boston’s finest dance band, will encourage you to, well, dance. With pleasure. And of course, local favorites Thomas Park will be back with their classic

“Whatever you want, we got it!” rock covers. There’ll more to follow, courtesy of Michael Caputo.

Performers include the Woods School of Irish Step Dance, Miss Linda’s Dancers, and Andrea Muccini’s Ultimate Self Defense Center. For the kids, so far the Street Festival has scheduled caricature artists, balloon twisters, and a roving band of fully costumed pirates. Other surprises will follow.

See you there. And it’s worth repeating that the Street Festival will observe and practice whatever pandemic public safety measures are required on Saturday, September 18.

Life’s a Beach (Cleanup) for Kristin Price

A

rmed with trash bags and bright yellow kitchen gloves, Kristin Price is doing her part for the South Boston community and the environment through her Southie Beach Club, a community dedicated to keeping Southie beaches clean and protecting our earth.

She gets out every week, usually on Mondays, rain or shine, to pick up trash. “I always collect a full fullsized trash bag, even if it’s just in 20 minutes,” she said, noting she usually starts at the beach at the end of K Street.

For her tireless work, Andrew Orpik nominated Kristin for South Boston Online’s Volunteer Spotlight.

“Our good friend Kristin Price started a Monday morning ‘Southie Beach Club’ where she goes to clean up the beach by hand of all the leftover trash after the weekend. She’s worthy of the Southie Spotlight!”

During COVID, Kristin was looking for a way to give back.

“With the pandemic and me working from home, plus having a little baby, I felt like there wasn’t a lot I could do,” Kristin said. “We weren’t traveling anymore, we weren’t doing these big things anymore, so I did a lot of what everybody did, which was

taking walks around the neighborhood.

“During the challenging times in the depth of the pandemic, that’s where I saw the most life still happening.

People were walking with their friends in masks, people were out at the beach and they were still windsurfing and taking advantage of the beach. It was really the most happy and lively place that I was seeing. I wanted to do something. I felt like there was so much challenge going on in the world, I wanted to do something good.”

Kristin, a genetic counselor who works remotely for a California company that does genetic testing for cancer, knew she couldn’t do something big, “because you couldn’t do much in person and I had this little baby, so I just started picking up trash on the beach.

As I would go for a walk, I’d just bring a trash bag and pick up trash on the beach.

And I noticed there was a lot of it. It was something that was really needed.”

From people getting up at 6 in the morning with their wetsuits on to go swimming, to the kids playing spikeball on the weekend, to windsurfers and people out with their dogs, “there’s just all kinds of different ways people use the beach and so I wanted to do something that celebrated that vibrancy and diversity but also give back.”

She decided she’d just put it out there on social media and see if she could inspire others to do the same.

“It felt good to do something small that felt like it was giving back to the beach, which I think is something that makes Southie really special.”

She came back from a Monday morning of picking up trash before work and decided to start an Instagram account (@southiebeachclub) and created her own logo. She posted

about what she was doing and wanted to see if anyone would follow her.

“If I can spend 20 minutes in a day and make a tiny difference, that feels good,” she said.

She keeps the account really positive (not focusing on all the trash) and fun and makes it super easy for others and herself. She encourages people to get out for 20 minutes to pick up trash wherever they’d like, whether it’s the beach or their street.

“It started slow,” she said about the account. “I got like 10 followers and was super excited. But I got a ton of support from the community now where other businesses are following me and resharing my Instagram.”

She’s up to 184 followers on Instagram at @southiebeachclub.

“We are small but mighty!”

Deirfiúr Home has reached out to do a cooperation on Instagram. “There’s been a lot of nice organic support from the community,” Kristin said.

She also did a giveaway with Deirfiúr Home and they made a donation to Save the Harbor/Save the Bay. Local businesses have even reached out to her about planning beach cleanup events. “I’d love to do that!” she said.

She figures things might slow down a bit in the fall and winter but she is looking forward to the spring and possibly doing events and partnerships with local businesses.

“I’ve been drawn to trying to better integrate with the community, learn more about the community, and support local businesses,” she said.

“Everybody has been so welcoming and excited to help.”

She’s asked for people to tag her account and post on IG when they are out picking up trash. Last week,

she started getting more action, even with people she doesn’t know who were posting that they were out there.

“That’s exciting to see,” Kristin said.

She sees people out there picking up trash who may or may not be doing it through Southie Beach Club. “You don’t see a lot of people doing it but I’m starting to see some more,” she said, noting that when she’s out there, people will stop to say thank you or wave at her.

She sees a lot of the same items every week: a lot of beer bottles (lots of Corona) and Fireball nips, plastic water bottles, straws, Dunkies cups, masks, and surprisingly, a good number of socks.

“I guess people wear socks to the beach and take them off there and leave them?”

When she finds nice items, like shoes and beach chairs, she tries to leave them at the beach entrances hoping someone will take them.

Sometimes she leaves her full trash bags next to the cans at the beach because the city picks up trash on Mondays; sometimes she brings them home if they are not too heavy or drippy.

Kristin, originally from Minnesota, and her husband, Matt, who is from Toronto, have lived in South Boston for seven years. Baby Grace is 13 months old. “Even though I’m not born and raised in Southie, I feel like I still have a special connection to Southie,” she said, noting they’ve been welcomed into the neighborhood with open arms.

Southie Store Sprouts from Owner’s Boston Roots

A

new store has sprouted up in Southie and it’s all about community.

Sprout, at 47 L Street, is a specialty shop that offers daily grocery needs -- produce, dairy, grains, and bread -- but also a selection of oils, vinegars, spices, natural preservatives, spreads, yogurts, Italian sweets, artisanal cheeses, beverages, and so much more. Grab and go sandwiches, wraps, and salads are also available.

Owner Na zih K ishtban opened the store Aug. 2 and already has had good foot traffic.

Nazih had never opened a business.

But when the COVID-19 pandemic derailed a new job he was supposed to start, he reevaluated his life. Feeling lost and confused, he volunteered with the Food Bank, helping package food, do deliveries, and more. After each shift, volunteers find out how many people were helped during that shift, he said. He realized that people want good, fresh, accessible food.

“I wanted to make a difference,” Nazih said. “A combination of everything just made me want to actually have my own business but that’s also beneficial to the community.”

He knew he didn’t want to be a small local market that sells cigarettes and cheap candy, or a huge chain grocery store, or a high-end store with expensive products, so he found the perfect in-between: a small shop with local products, healthy specialty items, commercial items, and a feel-good community atmosphere.

The shop is inviting and bright and Nazih is always ready for a conversation, to answer questions, or to be a resource.

“I found my second home here,” said Nazih, who is originally from Lebanon. “I want to try to build something here.”

In an effort to grow his business, his base, and his reputation, the personable Nazih seeks and gets customer feedback on what they’d like to see stocked in his store.

As such, he started carrying Teddie Peanut Butter, made in East Boston, after getting feedback. His section of local products also includes Thatcher Farm Dairy (Milton) and The Healthy Truth’s Life’s Nuts (Walpole); he will continue to add to his local offerings.

He’s gotten other suggestions from customers and will be incorporating those products, too, including avocado oils, dips, salsas, honey, and Vermont maple syrup. His shop will continue to grow with more shelving and more products, such as vegan mayo and BBQ sauce. He also has a dog section.

Nazih, who is not only the owner but the only employee,

is looking into the possibility of applying for a beer and wine license.

The name Sprout came about because Nazih wanted something catchy and something that helps people understand the feel and character of the store: healthy offerings and a growing business.

Nazih left Lebanon 14 years ago because of the civil wars, the hate, the lack of infrastructure, jobs, education, and money. “I had no future there,” he said.

After getting his undergrad degree in accounting and business/management in Lebanon, he took advantage of his dual citizenship and went to Paris and worked there for three years.

In 2010, he came to Boston to get his master’s degree in finance from Boston University; he left Boston for a while and then came back. He’s been to 24 countries (and has friends all over the world), worked in four countries, and speaks four languages (everywhere he’s lived, he has to

speak the language: Arabic, French, English, and some Chinese/Mandarin).

He called the years between ages 21 and 34 crazy and fun, “but I got to the point where I want to settle,” said Nazih, who is 35 years old. “I chose Boston. I have good roots here. I like the city. I’ve developed friendships here. It’s a good place where you can build a business.”

After so many years of corporate work, “I couldn’t stand being behind a desk all day long,” he said. “I like people, I like dealing with people. It’s really important to me to get to know people.”

And he is.

“People have been super friendly; they’ve come in to introduce themselves and welcome me to the neighborhood,” he said, noting that his business neighbors have also come in and welcomed him.

“It was overwhelming in a very good way,” he said. “It’s a small, tight community.”

A born-and-brought-up Brooklyn boy, he is deservedly famous for American classics like “Appalachian Spring”, “Billy the Kid”, and “Fanfare for the Common Man”.

The Hatch Shell is easily gotten to. Just hop on the Red Line here in South Boston; get off at Charles Station. It’s then about a five- to eight-minute walk to the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade. Bring your own chair or blanket to sit on. We’ll repeat: the next concert is on Wednesday, September 1, from 7 to 9 p.m., so you will get to watch a sunset as well. And once again, this concert is free.

ast night at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade, t he L a ndma rk s Orchestra presented a concert band performance for the first time. Everything from English military music to “Amazing Grace” to selections by John Philip Sousa – America’s bandmaster – were performed. Last week at the Hatch, the famed Longwood Symphony Orchestra, which is formed from musicians who are also medical professionals, played Bach, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky. This was followed by Cambridge’s Mercury Orchestra playing Copland and RimskyKorsa kov’s “Scheherezade”.

Next Wednesday evening at the Hatch Shell, Boston’s Landmarks Orchestra, conducted by Christopher Wilkins, will present Rhapsody in

Blue and American Portraits. All these musical performance are (or will be) free. Blessedly free. So here’s South Boston Online’s suggestion: Plan to attend the Hatch Shell concert next Wednesday, September 1, at 7 p.m.

Just bring yourself and a blanket or a low-slung lawn chair. That’s all.

Indoor Mask Mandate to Begin Friday

In July, City Councilor Ed Flynn and City Councilor At-Large Michael Flaherty partnered with the Office of Community Preservation to host an information session for District 2 residents on the Community Preservation Act (CPA). The meeting provided information and resources for South Boston residents, nonprofits, community and youth sports organizations to apply for CPA funding. The Councilors also emphasized that with 16 applications submitted over 4 rounds, and 7 projects subsequently approved, it’s critical for community organizations and neighbors to apply so that we do not lose out on available funding to help improve and preserve our neighborhood. With nearly half of South Boston applications awarded funding, it’s also crucial for those who may have been denied in the past to re-apply and continue to stay engaged with the CPA team.

“There is nothing more important than Boston’s safe recovery, reopening, and renewal from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mayor Janey.

“We know that masks work best when everyone wears one.

Requiring masks indoors is a proactive public health measure to limit transmission of the Delta variant, boost the public confidence in our businesses and venues, and protect the residents of our city who are too young for vaccination.”

“The Delta variant continues to create an additional challenge to stopping the spread of COVID19 in our community,” said Rita Nieves, the Interim Executive Director of the Boston Public Health Commission. “Wearing a mask indoors along with getting more people vaccinated will offer more protection to all our residents, including children under 12 and those who are not able to get vaccinated.”

The CPA provides funding for initiatives related to affordable housing, historic preservation, open space, and outdoor recreation facilities. From 2018 to 2021, there were 16 applications from South Boston, and the following seven approved for CPA funding:

Martin’s Park - $500,000 St. Augustine Historic Chapel - $499,075 Barnard Place Park - $150,000 Congress St Fire Museum - $150,000 Harry McDonough Sailing Center - $78,783 Castle Island Interpretive Signs - $75,000 Kearsarge Anchor - $75,000

To be considered for CPA’s 2022 funding round, interested applicants need to please contact the Community Preservation team regarding eligibility at 617-635-0545 and thadine.brown@boston.gov before filling out the CPA’s rolling eligibility form by Friday, September 3, 2021 at 5pm. The form can be accessed through the Office of Community Preservation’s website at www.boston.gov/cpa. If CPA staff reviews the project and determines that it can be funded under CPA requirements, the applicant will be invited to complete an application for CPA grants.
