A Success It Was
The West Broadway Task Force held its first Unity Day in two years. The last Unity Day took place in 2019. Unity Day was a festive occasion, with perhaps the most emphasis (other than eating, meeting, and greeting) on staying healthy and communicating. The festivities opened at 11 West Broadway’s Unity Day a.m. This was close to lunchtime, so grilled outdoor food was served immediately. Terry and Teddy served up freshly popped popcorn; James and Claudia grilled a huge number of both hamburgers and hot dogs. Desserts included Italian ices in several flavors and takeaways from the Dunkin’ Donuts table. Another table held condiments, fruit (bananas, watermelon, and strawberries), and a variety of chips and other crunchies. Hearing lively music is a key part of community gatherings like Unity Days in South Boston. Agustin Esnal served as the DeeJay for Saturday’s event. He played rhythmic pieces, with a Latin emphasis in many of them, for four non-stop hours. Agustin has many South Boston connections, including nine years as a member of Linda Doran’s Youth Ambassadors, whose group is sponsored by the South Boston Community Health Center located at F and West Broadway. While a Youth Ambassador, Agustin served four years as Anna White and Sr. Monica at Unity Day.

Monday, August 29 | 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday, August 30 | 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 31 | 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Thursday, September 1 | 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Friday, September 2 | 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. boston.gov/ballot-dropboxes fell on South Boston early this week – and to some extent, followed by bracing thunderstorms. At times these rains fell heavily, leaving behind large puddles and backed-up gutters. It was almost as if our drain systems had forgotten how to do their jobs, which might be the truth after an almost completely dry summer so far. You have certainly heard that most residents of the U.S. (including us) THANKS! are suffering from a historic drought. Maybe some figures will make this seem more vivid. Monday’s rainfall amounted to 0.35 inches here in South Boston. There were a few “starts and stops” as the rain fell, so let’s just say we received around a half-inch. Well, the last time we got a half-inch of rain was late in June - 0.55 of an inch eight weeks ago – more than 50 days back. Now that’s really a dry spell! Other municipalities have started to conserve water. Worcester has just begun restricting some of its daytime water usages. And you know that our forests, farmlands, and countryside are critically, even dangerously, dry. The prairie fire conditions out West are far more serious. And recent thunderstorms in Texas and even on Cape Cod have caused massive flooding, meaning that most of the rainfall ran off and could not be caught in a reservoir. We don’t mean this to be discouraging. In fact, we have included a few small Southie photos showing that the rain we just received was mostly gentle and useful. And here’s a few final figures for you to think about: as of August 1 (three weeks ago), Boston’s major water reservoirs – Quabbin and Wachusetts – contained more than 400 billion gallons of water. That’s over 90% full, and roughly a year’s supply of water we have available. Actually, even if we must conserve it for a while, South Boston residents are fortunate to have such a reliable supply of water on hand. An “attitude of gratitude” is what we should feel.

BFD Engine 39 visited Unity Day from the Stationhouse on D Street, crewed by Chris (10 years as a firefighter), Cory (9 years), and Sean (7 months). We were delighted to meet Michelle Persson-Reilly, the new Executive Director of Julie’s Family Learning Program, who assumed that position just three weeks ago on August 1. Michelle and two people from the staff at Julies’ – Anne Fernandez-Buehrens and Winslow Holman – ran a booth at Unity Day. Another exhibitor at Unity Day was the City of Boston Emergency Management. A particular item that caught our eye was the notification service Boston offers when an emergency occurs. As Malik and Ky’ron explained, by enrolling in this service, you’ll be notified of any emergency situation that might affect you. An example could be the water main breaks that happened last week and closed off major streets like parts of Charles and Tremont. Contact Boston.gov/emergency to find out how to sign up. Anna White, the City Hall liaison to South Boston, also dropped in at Unity Day, along with Sr. Monica. And City Council President Ed Flynn came by with his daughter Caroline. She has just completed an internship; Ed recently celebrated a birthday. All in all, the West Broadway Unity Day was a good event put on by good people.
