Maura Doyle, Esq., to Chair SBCA Banquets

M

aura S. Doyle, Esq., Clerk of the Supreme Judicial Court of Suffolk County, is the General Chairwoman of the South Boston Citizens’ Association (the SBCA) Banquet this year. As such, from her seat at the center of the Head Table, Maura will handle the duties of Mistress of Ceremonies at the 140th and 141st Annual Evacuation Day Banquet. Don’t miss this one!

The Banquet will take place next month – Friday, September 17, 2021 – in Room 258 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center on Summer Street. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres begin at 5:30 p.m.; the Banquet follows at 7 p.m.

Generally speaking, the Banquet has been held to commemorate

the complete Evacuation of Boston

by British forces on March 17, 1776, the very first victory in the U.S.A.’s War of Independence.

South Boston and its fortifications on Dorchester Heights played the key part in that victory.

South Boston Online interviewed Maura this weekend.

A lawyer herself since 1981, Maura was appointed 25 years ago (unanimously) by the Justices as Clerk of the Suffolk County Supreme Judicial Court – the first woman ever to hold that position in more than 300 years. She was then elected outright in 1998 and has been the Clerk ever since. In addition to her regular duties, Maura has made many managerial improvements as Clerk, increasing public access and modernizing record storage and retrieval.

Tenacity: Tennis, Reading, and Summer Fun

he youngsters at Moa k ley P a r k ’s tennis courts had a blast sharpening their skills, getting in some reading, and playing group games Friday as Tenacity ended its 2021 summer run.

Thousands of k ids across 18 Boston locations took part in

the six-week tennis and reading program. Families could sign up their kids for just one week, all six weeks, or any number of weeks in between. It’s completely free.

people like Tommy Butler, Jimmy Kelley, Joe Moakley, Jack Hart, and Peggy Davis Mullen, who have moved on or have left the public eye, and she reflected upon the increasingly important role women now play in governmental

affairs. Maura recalled becoming a mother – she and her husband Frank have three children: Frank, Jr., Jacqueline, and Matthew.

Her mentor, who was both male and a lawyer himself, counseled her by saying, “Becoming a mother will mean that you will become a better lawyer”. Maura found this to be true - as a mother, she also became a more balanced, well-rounded lawyer.

It was a joy to hear (and laugh) when Maura spoke about her well-known wit and humor. She claims it comes from her parents.

Her father (a Sweeney) was quite the practical joker; her mother (a Donovan) possessed that true, deepdown, Irish sense of humor. This year’s Banquet will also be Maura’s 25th year taking part in such events.

in 1995, when she was first asked to tell a joke in front of everyone at the Banquet. Sometime, ask her to tell you that joke about her being a baker. But she doesn’t make fun of others. She prefers to make fun of herself, or occasionally her husband Frank, with her humor.

But mere words can’t describe her wit accurately. Just make it a point to attend the Banquet on the 17th.

Maura’s sense of humor receives its depth from her philosophy – a highly practical philosophy developed from her decades as a professional and as a devoted family woman. We only have room for one example of what she said during our interview: At swearing-in ceremonies for new lawyers, she carefully stresses these four points: Remember from whence you came.

a hired gun.

Don’t measure your success by your salary, but by who you are.

Last but not least, lighten up!

And by now, you’ve likely asked yourself why the Banquet is numbered “140th and 141st” this year. Well, the SBCA’s first Evacuation Day Banquet took place in 1880 – 141 years ago. Since then, the Banquets have been held on or around March 17, but (of course) both the March 2020 and the March 2021 Banquets had to be deferred due to the pandemic.

So the SBCA decided to combine Banquet 140 and 141 on September 17. What will that mean to you, as a Banquet participant?

Twice the enjoyment, of course!

Mayor’s Coffee on Wednesday

T

he Mayor’s Coffee in South Boston took place yesterday, from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m. It was held in Medal of Honor/M Street/ Christopher Lee Park, just inside the Park’s entrance that looks out on M and East Third. These Coffees have become something of an annual Boston tradition over recent years, although they were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mayor Kim Janey started up the Coffees

once again, ever since most of the pandemic protocols had been lifted late in June, especially for outdoor gatherings. South Boston’s desire to get together and socialize was obvious. Mayor Janey seemed to be delighted with the crowd. This was not a formal event. Guests at the Coffee came and went as they pleased. Those who talked with the Mayor brought up issues they themselves were interested in.

Many children attended, some of whom indulged in the face painting offered by the Condon Community Center (part of the BCYF). We noticed students from St. Peter’s School, along with members of the Boys & Girls Club and the Colin’s Joy Project. Other youth groups were undoubtedly there, too.

The mayor confined her remarks to thanking those who came, and she expressed her gratitude to those who put the Coffee together – the DeeJay in her tent, Star Market for their fresh fruit cups, the City’s Parks Department for the potted plants, and Dunkin’ Donuts for the doughnut holes, and especially for their real (!) iced coffee – Dunkie’s does it again!

Farewell and Godspeed, Katie

Katie Cole, Associate Pastor of Children and Youth Ministries at South Boston’s Fourth Presbyterian Church, is leaving us for another assignment.

T

he Reverend Katie Cole is leaving the Fourth Presbyterian Church for another assignment.

She has been called to become the new Interim Pastor at the Hartford Street Presbyterian Church in Natick – seemingly close by, and even so, seemingly at a distance, too.

Perhaps the most important thing we can say to Katie, and about her, is congratulating her on her new calling, as well as thanking her for making such a great contribution here, both to the Fourth Presbyterian Church on Dorchester Street and to all of the South Boston community. She was and is a hard worker, well-educated and dedicated, motivated by devotion to and love for everything she does.

Katie will be here through the Labor Day weekend on September 6. She begins her new duties at the Hartford Street Presbyterian Church in Natick later in September, on Wednesday the 22nd. She briefly described the scope of these duties, which, in addition to religious activities, will extend to helping the Natick congregation (120 members) establish a direction for their own Church, and then helping them find the right minister to lead them there. The word “Interim” in her new pastoral title takes on a much deeper, more profound meaning than it usually has. And it sounds to us like it will be a very challenging calling.

Katie has been associated with

the Fourth Presbyterian Church for 13 years. The first four years of this time began when she was still a seminary student unsure of whether to become a minster. After University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, she came to Boston University where she completed Masters Degrees in Divinity and in Social Work. She then worked at Fourth for nine years, and was ordained as a Minister during that time.

She has nothing but fond memories of the Fourth. She has seen many of the children she taught and led go on to colleges and start their own lives – in other words, they grew up right in front of her. She literally loved her work in music performances and music teaching – she told us that five of her students have performed at Carnegie Hall. And she can look back on the effects of the pandemic as

She expressed her deep gratitude to Pastor Burns Stanfield for his teaching, for being her confessor, and for affirming the importance of music in the Fourth. He taught Katie how

to meet, bond with, and work with other people, both inside and outside of the Church. Pastor Burns in turn, when asked about his feelings, said in a truly, unmistakably heartfelt way, “We will miss her very much!”

Katie feels the same way in return.

Dawn Marie Gullage, one of four people who nominated L au re t t a for S out h B o s ton Online’s new feature, Volunteer Spotlight, said Lauretta is worthy of the recognition. “She is a single mother who works hard to raise her son, yet is always giving back to the communit y,” she sa id.

Even though Lauretta is not an “event t ype” volunteer, she helps the people she meets, her friends, family … anybody. “I’m more like a connecting people with resources kind of person.”

“I try to be positive to all my people, my friends. I don’t have money to give, but I can listen,” she said. “Whatever I can do I will do.”

“I listen to them.

People just need to be heard.

W hen I’m listening to t hem I c a n c on ne c t t hem w it h resources that I k now about.

“Maybe they need a Julie’s [Family Learning Program], maybe they need a detox … bringing people to detox,” she said. “That’s a huge part of my life, drugs and alcohol, because I lost a lot of people to drugs and alcohol,” including her t win and another brother.

Lauretta is the employment specialist at the Gavin Foundation, which of fers suppor t ser vices to fa milies impacted by drug abuse. She helps her clients find employment and get IDs, she runs groups on work ing, she helps secure clothes, boots, and tools for her clients, and more.

She i s a l so a member of the Board of Directors of Julie’s. “I’m the voice that is a prog ra m pa r t icipa nt,” she said. “I tell the board how it feels to be a Ju lie’s client.”

Lauretta and Francis, 15, started in the Julie’s program when Francis was 3 months old. “We both went through it together,” she said. At that time, the women in the program went upstairs to do their work and the children were downstairs.

She went on to Bu n ker Hill C om mu nit y College to get her a ssociate degree.

Lauretta knows a lot of people: from her job, from Julie’s, from walking her dog, Penny, a feisty 4-year-old Yorkie, and from living in Southie all her life. And because

she and her son have orange hair, they really stand out, she joked.

Lauretta, 44, is an amazing role model for her son: “He’s compassionate. Life is difficult for us sometimes. We’re not perfect,” she said, but they do what they can.

Lauretta reaches out to people for herself, as well. “I need to take care of my well-being, too,” she said.

Francis agrees. “I feel like she helps a lot. She does a lot for other people, to where she forgets about her own life,” he said.

“She’s always doing something for other people that sometimes it’s hard for me to talk to her. I can’t talk to her until 8 at night sometimes because she’ll be on the phone helping other people.”

“It’s sincere,” Lauretta said. “I answer my phone and I’ll listen.”

Francis, who attends Excel High School and works at the Condon, said his mom’s phone calls aren’t like 15 or 30 minutes. They last hours “because she cares a lot.

“I feel like she def initely deser ves ever y thing t h a t ’s coming to her in the best way possible,” he said, noting that Lauretta being featured in South Boston Online is very warranted.

“She really is the best,” Francis said. “I’ve been looking at her as a role model for all my life. She’s been there for me for everything.”

In her role with the Gavin Foundation, Lauretta is a lways looking for job opportunities for her clients, so if anyone has any openings, get in touch with Lauretta at the Gavin Foundation. “We would love to partner,” she said.

A Night at Moakley Park

T

uesday was a night to gather at Moakley Pa rk .

At h let ic leagues, a gorgeous sunset, and people simply walking across the Park to get to Carson Beach were everywhere. The closing event was a Movie Night, presented by the Mayor near the Ollie building. And at 6 p.m. before the movie, games, popcorn, a nd vaccinations were on the Moakley docket.

From the Will McDonough Field House all the way past the Ollie, the courts and fields were full of athletic teams from all over Boston, playing hard-fought basketball, baseball, and street hockey games, many of these with referees, yet. The Saunders Stadium was hosting athletes using the track. There’s a point

that will be made here later on.

Mayor Janey’s Movie Night, which featured games before the movie, was screened at 7:45.

Also, COVID-19 vaccinations were offered – for free, of course.

These were administered by personnel provided by Cataldo Ambulance Service, Inc. A number of kids’ games were set

up by Boston Harbor Now and the Cummings Foundation. The movie itself was a computerg ener ate d f a nt a s y n a me d “Onward ”.

In “Onward ”, two elves are brothers; they try to magically get in touch with their Dad who has died.

As for the point to be made here, it’s that Moakley is mostly

an athletic facility. It really is not a Park – Moakley, the Field House area, and Saunders Stadium are actually playing fields and ball courts that serve the entire City. Yes, Moakley needs better drainage and modernizing, but the courts and playing fields there now must be retained and even added to.

Councilor Ed Flynn Files Hearing on Expanding Communications Access for People with Disabilities

Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn is partnering with the Boston Disabilities Commission to file a hearing order at this week’s Council meeting about ways to ensure public facing televisions provide closed captioning for persons with certain disabilities. As TV programming is an important part of relaying information, especially in this pandemic, it is critical that our residents with disabilities are able to access information from televisions in public spaces. This hearing aims to discuss ways for the City of Boston to expand communications access through public facing televisions, and ensure that persons with disabilities have full access to information and resources shared to the public.

Televisions in public places have often played an important role in conveying information to the public in states of emergency.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, TV stations have broadcasted press conferences from public officials, breaking news, public health updates, and other critical programming that provides information and resources to residents. Unfortunately, many of these public-facing televisions do not enable closed captioning, and therefore are not accessible to persons who are deaf and hard of hearing, or have hearing loss due to age or illness, developmental disabilities, sensory disabilities. To mitigate this barrier, businesses can enable the “closed captions” function on their TVs, so that a live transcript of the program’s audio content is shown scrolling across the bottom of the screen. Having visible captions eliminate a significant communication obstacle for people with hearing loss and other disabilities, and would also increase access to information for the general public, as TVs are often located in crowded and noisy commercial spaces where everybody may have difficulty hearing.

“Public-facing televisions have always been a crucial mechanism in the dissemination of information, and we need to ensure that all of our residents - especially persons with disabilities - are able to access and understand information that is shared on public television screens. I’m proud to partner with the Disabilities Commission to file this hearing order so that we can find a way to ensure that televisions in public areas turn on their closed captioning, so that we can reduce these communications barriers faced by our persons with disabilities. I look forward to working with the Disabilities Commission, advocates, and businesses on this issue.”

According to Disabilities Commissioner and ADA Title II Coordinator Kristen McCosh, “The COVID-19 pandemic exposed many of the barriers that people with disabilities face on a daily basis. As the City reopens, Mayor Janey, the City Council, and my Commission are committed to ensuring equity for those with disabilities. Communication access is a key piece of this work. I appreciate Councilor Flynn’s efforts to support our initiative on enabling captions on public facing TVs.”

Three Murals – Going, Going, Gone?

T

his is a quick report on three South Boston murals that are in jeopardy, out of the 15 or so that adorn the walls of South Boston. Unfortunately, one of these – that antipodean abstract of Australia painted on the side of KO Pies at A and West Third – has already been painted over since KO Pies relocated to East Boston. The small white sign there reads “lenox sophia”, which has connections to a famous West Coast restaurant. Could this mural have been saved? We aren’t sure. But even so, it’s our loss.

Two other South Boston murals might be at risk, so we are mentioning them also. One of these murals was painted on the ocean-facing wall of the Curley

Center’s outdoor equipment containers, which are by the handball courts on the M Street side. This mural is a recreation of “Landfall at Shea Head, Kerry”

The team creating the mural was made up of members of the South Boston Arts Association, led by local artist Dan McCole.

So we climbed the wood fence at the Curley last weekend, and lo and behold – the mural was still there! Will it outlast the construction to refurbish the Curley? We hope so. We’ll inquire.

A third Southie mural may be in jeopardy as well. That’s the one on L Street at the intersection with East Broadway. It covers the wall of the coffee shop once occupied by Bailey’s; it was created by Alex Cook at stone balancer art. A new, uninspiring, mixed-use de velopment is planned for that site.

For several years now, South Boston Online has kept track of South Boston’s murals. At first, these numbered just ten and then grew to around 15. We reported on each new work of art as it was completed (please note that these are actual works of art, NOT graffiti). As the years spun by, we were quite impressed by the long-lasting nature of the South Boston murals, even though a great deal of construction was taking place everywhere. Some of these murals have been repainted with fresh, colorful paints that brought back all of their

original beauty and symbolism.

And it is possible to preserve these murals, even if they are moved to different locations.

Several years ago, Dan McCole led a group of young people who painted a mural on a wall at the small parking lot in Andrew Square. The mural depicted oldstyle trolley cars passing in and out of Andrew Station across the Square. Well, this lot was converted into a multi-story retail

and residence complex, now nearly finished. The developer fabricated a vivid reproduction of the original mural and placed it nearby.

Right now, this reproduction is obscured but it’s still essentially intact. Perhaps it could still be recovered, cleaned up, and once again displayed.

Murals are the oldest known form of human art. And they always impress the viewer; they are worth preserving.

The “L”s mural, based upon “Landfall at Shea Head, Kerry” by Ireland’s John Skelton. Painted by Dan McCole and his cohorts, it still exists at the “L”, despite major construction there.
