Joseph Maiullari Awarded Butler Memorial Scholarship South Boston graduate receives $5,000 award for college

T

he Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today announced the recipient of the annual scholarship honoring the memory of Tommy Butler, the long-time Massport Director of Government and Community Affairs and son of South Boston. The 2019 Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship was awarded to South Boston resident Joseph Maiullari.

“Joseph is a thoughtful young leader and a valuable part of the South Boston community,” said Massport CEO Lisa Wieland.

“He has followed Tommy Butler’s example through his service and we are excited to award him this scholarship. We wish him the best in the years to come.”

The Thomas J. Butler Memor i a l S c hol a r s h ip is awarded annually to a student who resides in South Boston, is graduating from high school and has been accepted to an accredited college or university.

Maiullari is a graduate of Boston Collegiate Charter School and will soon attend Boston College. He volunteers h is t i me at t he Ty na n Community Center where he tutors youth and volunteers as a f lag football and hockey coach. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Mayor’s Youth Council.

Big Winners in Fishing Tournament Forty young anglers from across the city spent a spectacular summer day fishing for big striped bass on 10 donated charter boats at Save the Harbor/ Save the Bay’s 8th annual Youth Fishing Tournament at Fan Pier in the South Boston Seaport this year, with one surprising result. For the first time since the tournament began in 2011, all the winners were young women. Among the finalists were Kathleen Hart (left) and her sister Maggie Hart of South Boston. They both have spent the summer working for Save the Harbor’s Youth Environmental Education Program, helping to share the harbor with more than 30,000 underserved and low income youth and teens from across the city and around the region. Maggie Hart, who caught 16 striped bass during the tournament, took first place for the most fish caught and released.

“These eight young women were the big winners at Save the Harbor/Save the Bay’s Youth Fishing Tournament at Fan Pier this year,” said tournament organizer Bruce Berman of Save the Harbor/Save the Bay. “They were all focused on catching, not just fishing and it paid off.”

Statement From Boston City Councilor At-Large Michael F. Flaherty

T

he Ne w m a rke t Square area is a painful reminder of the opioid crisis’ devastating impacts on our city, staandregion.

It is the product of years of disgraceful overprescribing, and not enough funding or hea lt h insura nce covera ge for treatment and aftercare.

There is now a concentration of vulnerable people without access to employment, housing,

or healthcare who are continually victimized by our lack of a holistic response. Known locally as “Methadone Mile”, the area has become a dumping ground for the underlying problems of an entire region. This comes at the cost of public safety and quality of life for everyone who lives, works, attends school, or passes through the area. The need for a recovery campus has never been more evident.

The ravages of the opioid epidemic have touched nearly all of our lives, whether personally or through a friend or loved one. It is a public health crisis of massive proportions, and the response to it must be a multifaceted effort that incorporates our partners at the federal, state and municipal

level, as well as our public health off icials, experts in recovery services, law enforcement and the community at large. There is no simple solution to this epidemic.

We cannot accept a response that attempts to hide these issues by moving those affected out of sight and into other neighborhoods.

We also cannot stand by and allow this population to grow and be clustered and ignored over at Methadone Mile; not only is it inhumane, it is also ineffective.

As a city, we can always do better to reach out to those who are most in need of our help.

It is important to remember bot h t he hu m a n it y a nd dignity of the members of our community who are experiencing substance abuse, mental health

issues, and homelessness as well as the daily experiences of residents, businesses, and t he d i re c t ly nei g hb or i n g children a nd fa milies.

The City of Boston, through both the Boston Public Health Commission and our partnerships with organizations throughout the metropolitan area, offers a number of services available to those experiencing homelessness or a substance use disorder.

A Community Preservation “Conversation”

A

few weeks ago, the City of Boston’s C o m m u n i t y Preservation group presented what they called a “Community Preser vation Conversation” to the South Boston public at the Tynan Community Center. The two Community Preservation members making this presentation were Thadine Brown, the group’s Director of Community Relations, and the group’s Intern from Harvard’s School of Urban Planning, Abby Jamiel.

Hosting their presentation at the Tynan Center were District 2 City Councilor Ed Flynn and City Councilorat-Large Michael Flaherty.

As background/backstory, last year South Boston Online reported on a just-passed piece of legislation called the Community Preservation Act (the CPA).

Along with Councilor Flynn, Christine Poff, the City’s newly appointed Director of Community Preservation, conducted a Forum on the CPA at the Tierney Learning Center. The CPA

The surcharge, with the State’s match, was projected to raise something over $20 million ($20,000,000) at first. Poff stressed that the CPA funds are to be used for three objectives: Open/ Green Space, Historic Preservation, and Affordable Housing. Carefully written applications for specific funds to support these three overall objectives would be submitted to a Community Preservation Committee, who would

award them based upon an overall objective of “preserving communities”.

You might well ask about Community Preservation benefits so far, which have been specifically located in South Boston. During the “Conversation” at this July 31 meeting, Councilor Ed Flynn told the “Conversation” attendees of three projects located in South Boston that got CPA funding - Martin’s Park next to the Children’s Museum, the McDonough Sailing Pavilion, and the fencing/wall around the cemetery at the St. Augustine Chapel.

This “Conversation” meeting was also an informal training session, to ensure that the attendees left with an understanding of how to proceed and how to apply for CPA funding. Four steps were outlined by the Community Preservation people: First, identify the problem; second, complete the eligibility form; third, complete the funding application; and fourth, submit the project application for review. According to the Community Preservation people, the eligibility form (Step Two) is critical. This is where the criteria of open/green space, historic preservation, and/or affordable housing must be demonstrated. As an example, the issue of a World War I Memorial was mentioned. If the CPA application were only for a monument, it might not be eligible for funding.

However, if it were part of a new green space, then it could be considered.

Just as a brief update on how the CPA is going in the first half of 2019, 56 projects from all over Boston worth a total of $34 million ($34,000,000) were recommended for consideration. Contact information for Community Preservation is boston.gov/cpa or 617-635-0545.

To be considered for the Thomas J. Butler Scholarship, students are required to have a minimum 3.0 grade point average and submit an essay of 1,000 words describing their career

interests or how their community service has affected their outlook on life. In his essay, Maiullari wrote, “I have the opportunity to have my voice heard in making not only South Boston, but Boston as a whole, a better, more united place for all people.”

he Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today announced the recipient of the 2019 Annual David W. Davis Memorial Internship.

The internship honors the memory of Dave Davis, the longest-serving Executive Director in the 53-year history of the Massachusetts Port Authority, leading Massport from 1975 until 1990. The 13-week paid internship in the Authority’s Aviation Security office was awarded to South Boston resident Charlene Evans. Evans is enrolled at the University of Connecticut where she studies Allied Health Science with a concentration in Healthcare Administration and Management.

award Charlene with the David W. Davis Memorial Internship,” said Massport CEO Lisa Wieland.

“She is excelling in her role as an intern at Massport in the Aviation Security department and we value her work ethic and commitment to public service. We wish her the best in her future endeavors.”

During his tenure, Davis demonstrated a commitment to Massport’s neighbors as well as to its customers and developed one of the very first residential soundproofing programs in the country. “Kidport” was another airport industry first that Davis unveiled at Boston Logan International Airport in 1987 as the nation’s first airport-based children’s play area. Under his leadership,

Massport established its own employee retirement system, which Davis later joined when Massport’s employees elected him to be their representative on the retirement board in 1996.

The David W. Davis Memorial Internship is awarded annually to an exceptional junior or senior in college.

The David W. Davis Memorial Internship allows students to develop a professional network that will aid them in their pursuit of a career in government and/or the public sector.

To be considered for the David W. Davis Memoria l Internship, students are required to

have a minimum 3.0 grade point average and submit an essay of 1,000 words describing why they believe a career in public service is essential to their career interests.

In her essay, Evans wrote “careers in public service are essential because without them, everybody would be impacted, on some level, in regards to education, safety, health, as well as many other categories.”

A World War I Memorial in South Boston

I

t has been just over 103 years since we entered World War I; it has been nearly 101 years since the first Armistice Day ended the combat in World War I. This was the first major war that the United States of America ever fought entirely on foreign soil. Our military engaged in fierce fighting while still only half trained, after being

transported all the way across the Atlantic Ocean. World War I was eventually called “The War to End All Wars”, because more civilians met their deaths than did members of the military forces.

We were in that war for only 31 months, and our side won.

Yet American soldiers killed in combat numbered over 100,000.

New England’s 26th Infantry Division, also called the “Yankee Division”, suffered over 1,700 combat fatalities. Some 103 young men from South Boston lost their lives, including that redoubtable but indomitable Meda l of Honor recipient, Michael J. “Mickey” Perkins.

It’s time – long past time – that we put up a memorial to those killed in World War I, as well as to those who served in that conf lict but made it back alive.

The people of South Boston are

known for their heroism when called; the neighborhood of South Boston is famous for the high regard in which it holds its veterans. But the absence of a specific memorial for those who served in World War I gapes like a missing front tooth.

A nd don’t look toward Washington for any assistance,

financial or otherwise. They have a lready spent yea rs arguing and deciding what not to do. Such a memorial in D.C. is at least two more years away, and perhaps much more.

Let’s do something about a World War I Memoria l by ourselves, here in South Boston, over the next few years.

Alumnus Award to Rob Morris

T

his spring, in mid-April, South Boston’s Robert E. Morris, Doctor of Dental Science (DDS), received a notable award.

Rob was named the “2019 Alumnus of the Year”, Distinguished Achievement Alumni Award, by the University of Maryland’s School of Dentistry. Rob graduated from this School, and the Award was presented to him by the School’s Alumni Association Board of Directors. It recognizes Rob’s significant professional accomplishments in science, dentistry, and education.

South Boston Online believes the award Rob received is notable for several reasons.

First of all, Maryland’s School of Dentistry is the oldest dental college in the world. Originally called the “Baltimore College of Dental Surgery”, it was chartered by Maryland’s legislature in 1840, almost 180 years ago, and officially made a department of the University of Maryland. Any

award from them is really notable.

Second, we were greatly impressed by the award letter Rob received from the University’s School of Dentistry.

It’s very well written; we will quote from it: “Throughout your entire career, spanning over forty years, you have demonstrated a dedication to the dental profession and to humanity.”

The Award letter goes on to say, “You have enriched lives in the United States, Viet Nam, Trinidad/Tobago, South America, and as far as the Arabian Gulf States”. (Ed. Note: Kuwait in particular). We especially like the tribute to Rob that says, “ … you have made the world safer, happier, and healthier.” – (very) well spoken!

Third, Rob has also been recognized as an outstanding alumnus by the other two colleges he attended.

In 2010, Holy Cross, where he received his A.B. in the Classics and Pre-Med, conferred upon Rob their Sanctae Crucis Award, which is their highest.

Rob also obtained his Masters in Public Health (MPH, in 1986) from Harvard’s School of Public Health.

In 2014, Harvard honored Rob with their Alumni Award of Merit. We will quote from that Award as well – “in recognition of his decades of leadership, developing international public health policy”, as well as, “his commitment to vulnerable populations, particularly children, refugees, victims of conflict, and those affected by HIV/AIDS,” Please forgive our brief use of American vernacular, but Rob Morris’s three well-deserved alumni awards - from Maryland’s School of Dentistry (the oldest in the world), Harvard’s School of Public Health, and the College of the Holy Cross - is truly a Trifecta he has achieved.

Rob has led an exciting life. He volunteered for service in the Marines, and went to Vietnam in 1969-1970.

After receiving his MPH at Harvard, he was employed by many nations and international agencies for his skills in dental health education. Among them was Guyana in South America. He was consulting in Kuwait when that Middle Eastern nation was invaded

by Iraq’s dictator, Saddam Hussein,

University Alumnus Awardee Rob Morris. in 1990. That found him essentially trapped on the top floors of a Kuwaiti skyscraper for 140 days, living on hope and smuggled-in food. In one of those jarring coincidences, his wife Jill (from Trinidad/Tobago) had just experienced an attempted coup in Trinidad/Tobago by guerillas trained in Muammar Qaddafi’s Libya.

He and jill are still busy and active in worthy causes. When you have a moment, ask the Morrises about NoMoreVictims in South Carolina and Mai Tam House of Hope. And congratulations, Rob, on your 2019 Alumnus of the Year Award.

Spectacle Island Recommended

Other than Thompson Island, which is the only Harbor Island that’s privately owned and operated (by the Outward Bound Education Center), Spectacle Island is the closest of the Harbor Islands to South Boston. That particular island has no doubt caught your eye this year – bright green from all the rain that has fallen, as well as the high point called the “North Drumlin”, which is the highest natural point in the Harbor.

Spectacle Island was so named by the Puritans, who settled in Boston in 1630, almost 400 years ago. At that time it was really two islands connected to each other by a quarter-mile strip of beach, which according to the settlers looked like a pair of spectacles. It has enjoyed a long and varied history ever since then.

South Boston Online decided to visit Spectacle Island this last week, in part because it has a unique recent history. Spectacle was the Harbor Island where most of the earth and rock excavated from the Big Dig was dumped.

That filled in the gap between its two sections, and gave the Island a base that could be landscaped. This is the key reason it’s so green, as well as the reason it has so many larger trees . It also has a number of roads, walkways and cleared meadowlands to traverse. It is a pleasure to walk on, leisurely or even aimlessly.

If you are interested in historic sites on the Harbor Islands, you might consider visiting Georges Island and Fort Warren or Little Brewster Island where Boston Light sits. If you are seeking a Harbor Island with more natural wilderness, go to Peddocks Island. But for a long, pleasurable, easygoing ramble

in a park-like setting (along with a nice beach) choose Spectacle. You can get there and back, as well as to Georges and Peddocks, on Boston Harbor Cruises (BHC) for under $20. Be sure to inquire about rates for children and seniors. Ask for Matthew Murphy.

The BHC’s cruise to Spectacle leaves from the Boston Harnor pier by the Marriott Long Wharf Hotel; it takes only 35 minutes.

And by all means, plan your trip on a sunny, warm day.

We mentioned that Spectacle Island, after receiving all that fill form the Big Dig, was completely landscaped. One of the most interesting aspects of walking around Spectacle is to see how Mother Nature can take over the most careful planning and work by us humans. Many of the trees on Spectacle are bent over by the Strangler fig vines that (somehow)

got out there. Purple loosestrife, that beautiful but toxic weed, has patches there. Look for her work as you walk around Spectacle – Mother Nature is not giving up.

The Boston Harbor water around Spectacle is sparklingly, brilliantly clear. You can cast your shadows from the sun onto the floor of the ocean (seriously!).

Don’t spend all your time walking, either. Relax and swim in the sun on Spectacle’s beach, which is lifeguarded. Drop in at the Visitor Center – read the signage and take home some of the literature.

Spectacle’s history is fascination – it was an Indian camp and then a dump once upon a time.

Bring a picnic lunch. And become familiar with the word “drumlin”.

Fourth Church Gospel Night at 25 On Saturday evening, the 10th, Pastor Burns Stanfield and the Fourth Presbyterian Church at 340 Dorchester Street presented their 25th Annual Fourth Church Gospel Night. And a holy, joyous, exalting occasion it certainly was. The performing guests included The Love Tones with their Godly harmonies, and singers from the Roxbury Presbyterian Church. The Pastor of that church is the Rev. Liz Walker. Do you remember her from Channel 4 News on weekday evenings? As usual, South Boston’s Fourth Presbyterian Church’s “Summer Singers” beautifully anchored the 2019 Gospel Night. The evening passed all too swiftly (and divinely), ending with a Fourth Church buffet. Laughter, friendship, and sweet harmony prevailed. “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the Earth!”

SB Residents Celebrate Christmas in August Santa extended his summer vacation this year, so Christmas in July came a little later than usual! Supporters of Christmas in the City, a Bostonbased nonprofit dedicated to bringing holiday magic to local children and families in need, joined him to celebrate Christmas in August on TAMO Terrace at the Seaport Hotel. It was a perfect summer evening filled with holiday music, festive decorations, delicious food from TAMO Bistro + Bar, cocktails, and toys donated by guests. Jake and Sparky Kennedy, founders of Christmas in the City, were surrounded by friends and supporters at this magical event, raising over $20,000 and bringing plenty of Christmas cheer to the Seaport District!

Christmas in the City serves up a winter wonderland experience, complete with lunch, pony rides, free dental check-ups, haircuts, amusement park bouncy slides, entertainment from choirs and dancers and pictures with Santa to thousands of children and their moms or guardians who are living in homeless shelters or transitional housing. They also help families in need in the days after the event itself, leading up to and including Christmas Eve. Each child receives a gift from their wish list, with a label letting them know it was selected especially for them by Santa (with a little help from Christmas in the City’s generous donors).

“Crossings: Massachuestts-Malta”

Please join South Boston artist Kathleen Bitetti tonight (AUG 15, 7 p.m.) at the South Boston Branch Library, when she presents a project she calls “Crossings: Massachusetts-Malta (2009-2019). Kathy’s residency in Malta led to her investigation of the historic connections between the country of Malta and her home state here.

Boston residents Marc and Pamela Siegle, with South Boston resident Tommy Bannon, supported the work of local nonprofit Christmas in the City.
