Joseph Hamilton Receives Thomas J. Butler Scholarship Massport Selects Joseph Hamilton to Receive the Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship

T

he Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today announced the recipient of the annual scholarship honoring the memory of Tommy Butler, the long-time Massport Director of Government and Community Affairs and South Boston community leader. The 2021 Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship was awarded to South Boston resident and St. Sebastian’s School graduate, Joseph Hamilton. Hamilton plans to attend Providence College in the fall and pursue studies in areas of political science and finance. He has volunteered for several local organizations, including the Paulist Center Food Pantry, Miracle League, Tynan

Community Center, and South Boston Youth Hockey. Hamilton will receive $5,000 for college.

“One of Massport’s goals is to always be a good neighbor. We applaud Joseph’s commitment to the same values through the many volunteer efforts he has participated in. Even at a young age, he has shown a passion for serving not only his neighbors in South Boston, but also other communities in need,” said Massport CEO Lisa Wieland.

“We congratulate Joseph for continuing to strive to make a positive impact on so many lives through his community ser v ic e a nd keepi ng t he legacy of our dear friend and colleague, Tommy Butler, alive.”

Program Introduces Kids to Track and Field

ith bibs proudly pinned to their shirts, the excited young runners lined up on the Saunders Stadium track.

At Coach Thomas White’s direction, the runners blazed down the track, wearing their game faces, which ranged from wide smiles to determined seriousness.

Once that group reached the finish line, Thomas prepared the next group of runners for their race.

About 60 kids ages 6-13 gathered at the Moakley Park stadium Monday for their weekly session of the Youth Enrichment Services (YES) summer track and field program.

While the younger kids took part in the developmental meet, the older kids did drills. The previous week, it was reversed, with the older kids having a

Massport who resides in South Boston, is actively involved in community service, and plans to pursue a college degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Public Service or Social Service. Butler was the former mayor of the South Boston Boys Club, Youth Counselor and then Director of Little City Hall in Charlestown, former president of the South Boston Citizens Association and member of the South Boston Irish American Society. When he arrived at Massport in 1987 as a manager of intergovernmental relations, he was a licensed social worker who had worked in the Boston Juvenile Court and for the City of Boston.

community has changed a lot since the days before Mr. Butler’s passing, but the values and sense of community remain. I love living in South Boston and am proud to call it my home. Because of this, I try to give back to my community as much as possible.”

Summer Reading – A Month To Go

T

here’s approximately a month before Labor Day weekend comes and goes, followed by South Boston’s schools reopening. How’s your own summer reading doing?

Whatever you choose to read in the summer is completely up to you. By far, the most important aim in summer reading should be your own relaxed enjoyment.

There’s still a lot of time to settle back in the sun or the shade (whichever one is your choice), at the beach, in your back yard, or on a bus going somewhere pleasant – yes, that’s beach, back yard, or bus (your choice, too).

Selecting books that bring you “relaxed enjoyment” certainly doesn’t mean that you have to read anything that’s poorly written.

No, there are plenty of tried-andtrue authors who write well, create interesting characters, and most important, tell great stories. And there are plenty of books that are enjoyable to read. Where can you find these? At the local Boston Public Library (the BPL) Branch

here in South Boston, that’s where!

South Boston’s Branch Library has thousands of books, of course, and you can ask for books from other branches to be delivered to our local branch for you to pick up. If you are in or near Copley Square, visit the BPL there. You can use your library card in the BPL’s Central Library to check out books, just as you can here at the South Boston Branch.

In fact, the whole BPL is a huge operation. It has 29 branches all around Boston, and it is the fourth largest library in the U.S., after the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, and the Widener Library at Harvard.

There are many types of reading that fit with summer relaxation.

Westerns, success stories, humorous novels, and American best sellers are all available to you at our library.

And borrowing them is free.

Blessedly free (except for your overdue fines, of course). So get yourself a library card – it’s easy.

This summer, we have enjoyed

reading light mysteries written in England, especially those that have some humor woven into their story-telling. We can recommend mysteries by M.C. Beaton featuring her two key characters – Scottish police sergeant Hamish Macbeth, and private detective Agatha Raisin, who lives in the U.K.’s Cotswold. Try Beaton’s “Death of an Honest Man” or “Hot to Trot”. Or you might enjoy John Lescroart’s “Son of Holmes”, about Sherlock’s son. Another U.K. novelist you’ll enjoy is Alexander McCall Smith. We were introduced to him by his stories about an editor/detective named

Isabel Dalhousie; he’s better known for his tales about the “#1 Ladies Detective Agency” in Botswana.

If you’d like a wider choice, there are many, many kinds of really good summer stories. If your thing is fantasy, dip into the seven Harry Potter novels by J.K. Rowling, or “The Hobbit” and the three-volume “Lord of the Rings” by J.R.R. Tolkein. If you want romances, well, our Branch Library has plenty of books that are patronizingly called “Chick Lit”.

But ignore that awful name, and enjoy reading whatever you want for the rest of this summer. That’s totally up to you – no one else!

An August Friendly Reminder

Jump ropes, cornhole, ring toss, soccer balls, bubbles, and so much more are now available to visitors to the Recreation Station on Pappas Way. The free game and activity lending library is filled with items for public use, including fitness gear, lawn games, books, and family activities, according to pappasway.com/recreation.

The station, which overlooks the Reserve Channel Basin, is across the street from the UPS facility. It is open to the public from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

If our counting at South Boston Online is accurate, last Monday saw the tenth Farmer’s Market of 2021 in Perkins Square, and there are 11 more to go before it closes for the year. So, it’s High Summer, halfway through the season. Anyhow, please make it a point to shop for the freshest possible groceries on Mondays from here on in, at the Riverdale Farm market on Mondays from 12 noon until 6 p.m.

Hunter’s Kitchen & Bar Successful Opening

uesday af ternoon, t he 10 t h, w a s e xcit i ng.

T hat feeling permeated the atmosphere in and all around Hunter’s Kitchen & Bar at 110 Dorchester Street on the corner of Silver, just outside of Perkins Square. You see, Hunter’s had origina lly pla nned to open their doors on Monday, the day before. But gremlins or a SNAFU or a glitch – just to use a few truly old-fashioned terms – intervened. Hunter’s Kitchen & Bar filled up very quickly, and due to their uniquely Southern menu and their unmatched ambiance, they enjoyed a very successful opening on Tuesday.

With just t wo minutes to go, A ndrew Zimmer, the General Manager of Hunter’s Kitchen & Bar, delivered a few words of encouragement to his wait staff. The kitchen staff, led by a smiling Head Chef Lambert Givens, disappeared into the kitchen to perform their culinary wizardry. The front doors opened; diners started to

First of all, there’s that word “ambiance” for you to consider – Hunter’s ha s completely renovated the interior of their building at 110 Dorchester Street. Now it has the feeling of a country lodge used for hunting,

f ishing, and various outdoor pursuits, all in a country setting.

Artifacts placed on the walls create this ambiance, along with many works of art and even some mounted trophies. After you order a drink, take a quick walk around the interior of Hunter’s – you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how well that word “ambiance” is work ing inside Hunter’s Kitchen & Bar. And country music plays in the background.

More important are the drinks offered. Many draft and bottled beers are available, a s a re ciders a nd seltzers.

Several wines, by the bottle or individual glass, are available in the four major wine categories – red, white, rose, and sparkling.

Nick Dixon told us that among t he cockta i ls de signed by Beverage Manager Mike Feeney, favorites include “Silhouette” (fresh tequila taste) and “Rabbit Hole” (vod k a w it h s weet tea). Non-alcoholic beverages include a couple of mocktails, lemon a de, a nd ic e d te a .

Lastly, and most important of all, take your time over the unique food menu, which comes from many points all over the American Southland – St. Louis and Nashville are mentioned, as are grits, collards, hushpuppies,

and several versions of fried chicken. For you burger lovers, consider something called the Wagyu Smash. The writer chose the gumbo, which is named “Lambo’s Gumbo” – Lambo is likely a nickname for Chef Lambert Givens. It was excellent – very hot, but “friendly hot”, with crab, shrimp, sausage (Andouille, of course), Carolina rice, and lots of okra. Okra, by the way, is rich in f iber, vitamins C and K, antioxidants, and certain essential minerals.

According to the staff, “There’s a lot of love in Lambo’s gumbo!”

T here’s re a l ly muc h more that could be said about Hunter’s Kitchen & Bar, but we’ll close with this suggestion.

If you are seeking a job with growth potential, stop in and inquire. They are looking for a cook, a bartender, hostesses, and waitstaff personnel. Don’t be afraid to go by in person.

Hunter’s Kitchen & Bar plans to grow as quickly as possible into serving lunch and weekend brunch. Check in with them if you’re interested in taking part.

Those drills included Turbo Jav (rubber-tipped javelins for kids), long jump (the kids had a blast soaring into the sand), and small and large hurdles.

The meets, which include running races, relays, and long jump, “allow the kids to see and track their progress,” said Elliot Simmons-Uvin, support staff for the track and field program and youth recreation coordinator and equipment specialist for YES. YES’s mission is to inspire youth through outdoor experiences and leadership opportunities that build confidence and prepare them to summit life’s challenges.

“First and foremost, [the program] develops some confidence and some physical skills,” said Bryan Van Dorpe, executive director of YES. There’s also a sense of accomplishment … “whether it’s one lap around or a mile.

Each week they can see improvement.”

Bryan said sometimes kids can get lost in team sports. Because track is an individual sport, “they can really excel and develop and improve.”

The city-wide program meets Mondays and Thursdays at Saunders Stadium and Tuesdays and Wednesdays

On your mark, get set, go! Coach Thomas Whites gives the all clear for the start of the race. at English High School. Over the four nights every week, the program gets about 300 kids, said Rosa Moriello, the track and field coordinator and YES’s adventure programs coordinator.

“It’s been a pretty difficult summer with the weather,” Rosa said, citing rain, heat waves, and smoke-filled air.

Monday’s session started out cloudy and dry but ended in a steady rain.

Pre-COVID, the program saw 100plus kids a night, Bryan said. “It shows there’s a real need for grassroots track and field programming where kids develop and learn and have fun with it,” he said.

YES not only introduces kids to track and field but also to a healthy lifestyle, Bryan said. It’s also a catalyst for making good choices.

“I mainly do track to help with exercising,” said Mila, 10. “It’s also really fun.

My dad runs a lot and I like to run. I like doing the 400 meters around the track once.”

Mila also likes doing the javelin and the relay races: “And I get to do it with my friends.

A lot of my soccer friends do this, too.”

Maddie, 9, likes being with her friends and running. Annabelle, 6, likes the long jump and the 100.

And the parents love it, too, said Bryan. “The kids come home tired.”

Bryan is grateful for the 25-30 volunteer coaches, including adults as well as college and high school runners. He also has kids who went through the YES program themselves and come back to help, like Thomas, who is now the coordinator of youth coaches. Thomas, a star runner at

Boston Latin School, will be running for Bucknell University this fall as a freshman.

“We couldn’t do it with them,” Bryan said of the volunteers.

YES’s programming gets kids involved year-round, said Elliot. The summer program ends on Aug. 19.

Then fall cross-country begins. After that, winter track starts, along with downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding. Then there’s spring track.

Savannah, 12, loves the program and plans to run track when she gets to high school. “I learned how to do Turbo Jav and I love sprinting. I think I’m pretty fast.

“Running is fun,” she continued.

“It makes me more energized and excited.”

The 7th Annual Martin Richard Memorial One Mile Invitational will be held Aug. 19 from 5-8 p.m. at Saunders Stadium.

T

he Reverend C. Paul Rouse passed from us last week. He entered his new life on Wednesday, August 4. Commonly and affectionately known to everyone as “Father Paul”, he was born on Monday, September 23, 1940; he was brought up in South Boston, where he attended Gate of Heaven Grammar and High School. Cardinal Cushing ordained him on June 7, 1967. Fr. Paul celebrated his first Mass in Gate of Heaven Church a few days later. For 40 years, he served in nine Archdiocesan parishes, four of them as their Pastor. He was on the faculty at St. John’s Seminary for nine years, after receiving an advanced degree in Liturgical Studies (Music), and was appointed the first Director of Worship in the Archdiocese of Boston.

On Tuesday morning, the 10th, a Mass of Christian burial was said in Fr. Paul’s memory. It was a beautiful celebration, held in Gate of Heaven Church where Fr. Paul offered his first Mass 54 years ago. Hundreds of those who knew Fr. Paul attended – family members, his parishioners, many of his friends, and fellow priests from everywhere, including the Regina Cleri priestly residence. His Eminence, Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley OFM Cap, and Rev. Robert E. Casey, Pastor of Gate of Heaven and St. Brigid Parishes, were the Mass’s con-Celebrants.

The Mass began with Schubert’s

stirring, gloriously melodic “Ave Maria”. The entrance hymn, “Be Not Afraid”, marked the Procession to the Gate of Heaven altar. The Liturgies of the Word were especially fitting: Susan Rouse read from Ecclesiastes – “A time to live …, and all things have their season…”; Elizabeth Rouse read from Revelation – “The old order passeth …” A passage from the Gospel of St. John, where Jesus thanks God for His Disciples, was read by Fr. Casey. Fr. Daniel McClellan delivered the Homily that followed, emphasizing that Fr. Paul’s strongest gift was his ability to connect people with one another. Fr. McClellan enthusiastically praised Fr. Paul for being able to get people to “join in”, especially in the music that is such an important part of liturgies. He mentioned that Fr. Paul saw every one of us as God’s gift to him. He called Fr. Paul’s efforts a true “Legacy”. The Liturgy of the Word then closed with the Prayers of the Faithful, spoken by six members of Fr. Paul’s family.

Fr. Paul’s Funeral Mass continued with the Liturgy of the Eucharist - the Gifts, the Consecration, the Blessings, and Communion. When the Mass concluded, Fr. Paul’s brother Richard took the lectern and eulogized him, saying, “My brother was the most generous man I have ever known, even though he had no material wealth at all. He lived alone, and died a happy man.”

Cardinal Sean then mentioned a few memories of his own about Fr. Paul.

After the Mass, as the congregation was dispersing, many recalled Fr. Paul with stories of their own. Charlie Connor, who had been the organist at St. Camillus (Arlington) told about Fr. Paul’s employing him, and how great he was to work for. Fr. Paul’s talents at St. Camillus extended to singalongs that contained many of the traditional Southie songs. Another commenter stated that Fr. Paul “was a fine man of the cloth.” All in all, the Mass was quite an inspiring event.

BCYF TYNAN “FUN IN THE SUN”

This six-week summer program is designed for 13–14-year-old Boston teens. We hope that this program will inspire and motivate your teen to begin their leadership journey through educational and recreational activities, field trips and service projects. Teens will also develop a strong foundation of preemployment skills by participating in experiences that will help ensure success in their first job. Teens that meet all program requirements will be eligible for a stipend at the end of the summer. This program is organized by BCYF program manager, Kate Hennigan. The daily schedule of activities for the Tynan girls is carried out by youth worker, Katie O’Connell. Thank you, Katie, for being a mentor to our teens. We appreciate you.
