Jackie O’Brien to Be Honored at New Street Hockey Rink

week from this Saturday, at 10 a.m. on August 15, Jackie O’Brien will be honored. As part of the First Dangle Fest Street Hockey Tournament (which will be an annual event in years to come), the brand new street hockey court in Moakley Park will be named the John “Jackie” O’Brien Street Hockey Court, in recognition of his extraordinary efforts in support of South Boston’s youth clubs, sports, programs, and activities.

And Jackie’s honor is not only well-deserved, it is highly fitting. He and Joe Moakley were close friends; Jackie also played center at Saunders Field, in front of Ray Flynn, during his South Boston High School football years. Over the years, he has

outh Boston Online is very well aware that these last six months of the Year of Our Lord 2020 have been filled with severe problems a global plague called COVID-19, violent racist confrontations across the U.S., Election Year squabbling at every conceivable political level, and even (as this is being written) the leftover winds, rains, and pronunciation difficulties with Hurricane Isaias. And you thought the Pilgrims faced major problems 400 years ago, when they landed at Plymouth in 1620.

On top of a ll t hese issues is the 2020 Census, which is perhaps the most impor ta nt single f unction to be underta ken by our American government this year.

The final Census figures will affect programs all across the nation for the next full decade, from 2021 right on through 2030, the City of Boston’s 400th Anniversary. Some (but not

all) of these programs include housing, child care, senior centers, education at every level, new roads and bridges, food and nutrition efforts, all kinds of public transportation, health and medical programs, and (of course) fair and equitable

COVID-19 Testing at Moakley Park

oston City Councilor Ed Fly nn a nd Councilor At-Large Michael Flaherty announced a new COVID-19 pop-up testing site over the next two weeks at Moakley Park in South Boston, part of the City of Boston’s ongoing efforts to promote and increase testing capacity for residents. These pop up testing sites over several weeks in South Boston are being done in partnership with the Boston Public Health Commission and Health & Human Services Chief Marty Martinez, Mayor Marty Walsh, Congressman Stephen Lynch, Senator Nick Collins, and State Representative David Biele as well.

This new pop-up testing site is located in tents along Old Colony Ave near 1187 Columbia Road, in proximity to the Joe Moakley Park Tennis Courts. Testing at this site will now run from Wednesday, August 5th to Saturday, August 8th; then again from Tuesday, August 11th to Saturday, August 15th. Hours range TuesdayFriday from 2pm-7pm, while both Saturdays will run from 10am-3pm.

In the interest of time, residents may pre-register at 617-568-4500. No appointment is necessary; however, on site registration is required to receive testing results. Testing will be provided by East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, in partnership with Harbor Health. $14.6 MILLION Secured for Roadway Improvements

R

ecently, State Senator Nick Collins and State Representative David Biele joined their colleagues in the Massachusetts Legislature in passing legislation to fund roadway infrastructure projects across the Commonwealth under the state’s Chapter 90 program.

The bill allocates $200 million projects involving municipal roadways and bridges. The City of Boston will receive over $14.6 million in funding for local streets and roadways for fiscal year 2021.

The Chapter 90 bill distributes state funds to cities and towns for roadway infrastructure projects such as resurfacing, sidewalks, traffic control, lighting and drainage. After receiving funding from the state, local municipalities

decide how to utilize state funding.

“This funding reflects our commitment to supporting the City of Boston with the resources they need to improve pedestrian crossings, sidewalks, handicap access, and traffic calming measures,” said Senator Collins.

“As we continue to fight for resources during these unprecedented times, these funds will support projects to improve the safety and reliability of streets and sidewalks in the City of Boston,” said Rep. Biele. “It is crucial that we continue to invest in transportation, and I was proud to join my colleagues in securing funds for local roadway improvements.”

The bill passed both the Massachusetts State Senate and the House of Representatives and has been signed into law by Governor Baker.

Groundbreaking: Hood Milk Bottle Refurbishment

ast Wednesday, July 29, a key South Boston institution began one of those “good-news projects” that mean so much to our corner of the universe. At 11 a.m. on the 29th, Carole Charnow and Sarah Barow took up their spades, and then broke ground, signifying that the iconic Hood Milk Bottle would be completely repaired and renovated this year. The refurbishment is expected to be completed by yearend, about 120 days from now.

President Charnow, who was visibly delighted at the event and the superb summer weather that accompanied the groundbreaking, welcomed the media and the Museum’s guests. She thanked Hood Milk for its ongoing support Following of the Museum.

The Boston Children’s Museum Milk Bottle has a long history. Referring to the Milk Bottle with the word “iconic” is highly accurate, despite that word’s use in so many other incorrect ways.

The Milk Bottle was originally built by a Taunton ice cream maker named Arthur Gagner in 1934.

He used the Bottle as a highly visible refreshment stand on Route 44, from which he dispensed his home-made ice cream. But it was eventually abandoned and fell into disrepair, until Hood Milk purchased and repaired it in 1967.

Forty-three years ago, in 1977, the Hood Milk Bottle, now totally renewed, was placed on a ferry and undertook its “Great Bottle Sail” across Boston Harbor, ending up at the Children’s Museum Wharf (308 Congress Street, on the South Boston side of the bridge). It has been a prominent landmark ever since then. Thirty years later, in 2007, the Milk Bottle was renovated for the first time, and officially rededicated by then Mayor Thomas Menino. And Hood Milk continues their partnership with the Children’s Museum to this day. Now, refurbishment No. 2 is at hand. Watch for it at yearend.

It is appropriate to list some past years and landmarks in time: We have already mentioned that the Milk Bottle came to the Children’s Museum in 1977 (43 years ago), and that Arthur Gagner built the

original Milk Bottle in 1934 (86 years ago). The now world famous Boston Children’s Museum was first established by a group of educators in Jamaica Plain in 1913; that’s 107 years ago – almost as old as South Boston’s Dorchester Heights monument and our “iconic” St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade.

But now think about Hood Milk – a key supporter of the Children’s Museum and the donor of the Milk Bottle to the Museum.

Hood Milk was founded 174 years ago in 1846, which makes that enterprise approximately

as old as Fort Independence on South Boston’s Castle Island. The St. Augustine Chapel was built in 1818 and dedicated in 1819, just over 200 years back. South Boston itself became its own entity in 1804, 216 years ago.

That calls to mind that saying, “What goes ‘round, comes ‘round.”

The Children’s Museum and the Hood Milk Bottle are now firmly established, long-standing South Boston traditions, which bring to mind a more recent saying that goes, “How ‘bout them apples?”

Yes, it has happened.

Last Saturday, August 1, Ottavio LoGrasso reopened his Barber Shop at 377 West First Street. This is a very attractive new location for him - just a go few short blocks from Perkins Square down Dorchester Street, turn past Publico onto First, and you are there. It was a busy reopening day for Ottavio; half a dozen customers were waiting in line.

And the timing of Ottavio’s reopening is very impressive.

After more than 40 years in Perkins Square, he relocated and reopened in one month flat – he closed on June 30 and reopened at 377 West First last Saturday, August 1. Nice going, Ottavio! See you there.

August is here – it’s High Summer in South Boston. The trumpet vines (campsis radicans) are in full bloom.

Trumpet vines are native to America, they grow as far north as Ontario, and were first brought back to England by the Jamestown settlers early in the 1600s. Their flowers are generally a brilliant orange, and attract many birds, including hummingbirds who drink the nectar. CITY OF BOSTON ANNOUNCES PREPARATIONS AHEAD OF SEPTEMBER 1 ELECTION

Voting will be conducted in accordance with public health guidelines with in-person and mail options The City of Boston Election Department today announced its preparations ahead of the September 1, 2020 State Primary. The election includes the following races: Senator in Congress, Representative in Congress, Governor’s Council, State Senate, State Representative, and Register of Probate. The Department is reminding residents that Saturday, August 22, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. is the last day to register to vote and Wednesday, August 26 is the deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot.

Due to COVID-19, the Election Department will implement health and safety protocols during the early voting period and on Election Day. All poll workers will receive face shields, face masks, gloves, disinfectant wipes, disinfectant spray and hand sanitizer. Cleaning will take place at each site every two to three hours. Voters waiting in line will be instructed to stand 6 feet away from others and wear a face covering.

But we all know that drivers in South Boston blow through orange stop lights at intersections, even if they’ve just turned red. Well, take a look. But take another look.

A group of approximately 100 motorcycles passed up Broadway on the last Friday afternoon in July (no, they weren’t on their way to a school graduation, and they weren’t celebrating High Summer). A few of the bikers blocked off the streets leading into Perkins Square, while the rest of the bikes went on through, much to the horror of those in their automobiles (you should have heard the horns!). And none of them had face masks on!

The 2020 “Good News” Celtics

T

he sports scene in Boston is back in “full swing” (as was recently written somewhere or other). But that scene has been extremely shaky been so far. Certainly, the opt-out departure of eight Patriots, especially several defensive stars, is hard to take.

When offensive genius Tom Brady went south on us, defense/running/ receiving (but mostly defense) became the Pats’ fall-back strengths.

And last Sunday, the Bruins loafed through their first game. Worst of all, the Red Sox’ pitching has totally evaporated. Yes, the Sox have always been a “hitting team”, but pitching in 2020 is half (or more) of playing winning baseball.

So, despite having only a 1W-1L restart record, the Celtics right now are the only visible

bright spot in Boston sports.

Their loss last Friday was to the Milwaukee Bucks, who dominate the NBA’s Eastern Conference and are the single best team in the entire NBA. Now, basketball is the highest scoring (by far) of all major pro sports, so it pays to look at the numbers first. Basketball strategy is really very simple – “Just put the ball in the hole more than your opponents do!” The Celts let the Bucks get out to a 17-2 (!) start in the first quarter, and ended up losing by 119 to 112 – a gap of only seven points. Make sense? You bet.

Furthermore, the Celts’ superstar Jason Tatum scored just five (!) points – two for 18 attempts and one foul shot. Tatum’s points-per-game this year is 23.3 (the highest on the Celts), so his performance was 18 (!) below par.

Does it make even more sense that the Celts went down? You bet! A

soft start coupled with an ineffective superstar. Celtic sparkplug Marcus Smart was high scorer at 23; his point average has been 13.6 this year.

In their second game on Sunday afternoon, the Celts (currently 44W22L) narrowly beat the Portland Trail Blazers (30W-38L) by 128 to 124. It was really close at the end.

The Blazers outscored the Celts 76 to 61 in the second half. Only lastminute heroics by Jaylen Brown (30 pts.), ably supplemented by Gordon Hayward (22 pts.), pulled it out.

Game Two was actually a complete, total reversal of Game One – The Celts were up by 19 points by the end of the first half, 67-48, and Jayson Tatum was the high scorer of both teams at 34 total points. He sank a full 50% of his attempts; five of them were three-pointers.

Yes, basketball is a game of numbers, which leads to a simple defensive comment: in any given

game, there are shooters who are hotter (or cooler) than their averages.

As the game progresses, focus the defense on the one or two “hot” players by denying them their favored spots on the floor, doubleteaming them if necessary. If a round-ball defense knocks 10 points off a superstar’s average score, that’s usually enough of a margin to win.

If you want to enjoy the Celtics on a more personal level, follow and become a fan of Marcus Smart. He’s the team sparkplug and at times, he becomes the whole engine. And keep an eye on Gordon Hayward’s quiet competence, too. It’s working for him.

Summer Sports Centers Extended to August 28 The Boston Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce that with the gradual return of activities to City parks the 2020 White Stadium, East Boston, and South Boston Sports Centers are being extended through August 28.

The Sports Centers offer free summer camp alternatives to Boston youth who might otherwise have no opportunity to attend such programming. Each location offers instruction in a number of popular sports through Friday, August 28. All Sports Centers are offered free of charge to Boston residents and open to boys and girls ages 7 to 14. Crossroads and BCYF Provides Outdoor Programming for Boston Youth

A unique in-person day programming opportunity for youth in the City of Boston has been underway since July 13 thanks to a partnership between Crossroads, a youth development organization, and Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF). Committed to offering an alternative to virtual summer activities, Crossroads and BCYF have teamed up at nine community centers in neighborhoods across Boston to offer weeklong daytime programming from July 13 through August 14.

“Thanks to our partnership with Crossroads, we are able to offer more fun and engaging summer programs while following important new regulations and procedures,” said William Morales, Commissioner of Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF). “This program is a great addition to our other summer offerings and the children are loving it.”

The Crossroads/BCYF programs follow all COVID-19 regulations to ensure a safe and innovative solution to the reduction in summer programming as a result of the pandemic. These programs provide young people ages 7-12 with access to vital social networks and opportunities to grow and learn, families with an option for their children to be engaged out of

the home, and youth with summer jobs. Each session will be 5 days long, taking place Monday through Friday from 8:30am -11:30am at community centers in the Boston neighborhoods of Roxbury, South Boston, Charlestown, East Boston, Dorchester, Mattapan, Roslindale, and Jamaica Plain. Sessions will be limited to 50 youth, with group sizes no larger than 10. The program registration information can be found at Boston.gov/BCYF-Summer.

“As it became increasingly clear that running our overnight camps simply would not be feasible this summer, we began to reimagine how Crossroads might be part of the solution to meaningfully engage children from Boston who have spent the past four months in isolation, struggling with the loss of their social and educational systems,” said Simon Hess, President of Crossroads. “If we couldn’t bring kids to our camps, why not bring Crossroads programs to children in their own communities? After being connected to BCYF, it became clear that we shared a common objective - providing high quality programs to children and families who were looking for options beyond computer screens this summer.”

Crossroads is a youth development organization founded in 1936 with the mission of empowering young people to unlock their potential and positively impact the world. Crossroads offers year-round programming to 1,100 children and teens from greater Boston and Brockton, including day programs and overnight summer camps at Crossroads sites in Duxbury (Camp Wing), Brewster (Camp Mitton), and Ashby (Camp Lapham).

BCYF is also operating other virtual and in-person programming for registered youth at community centers across the city. Learn more about BCYF’s summer programs at Boston.gov/BCYF-Summer.
