National Night Out

Neighbors Urged to Apply for CPA Funds

T

he application for the 2023 funding round of the Community Preservation Act (CPA) grants is now open, with nearly $39 million available for CPA projects. Council President Ed Flynn and Councilor At-Large Michael Flaherty are urging District 2 residents again to consider applying for CPA funding for relevant projects in the categories of affordable housing, historic preservation, and open space for recreation.

Interested applicants would need to contact the Community Preservation team regarding their eligibility, then submit the CPA’s rolling eligibility form by Wednesday, August 31, 2022.

It’s critical for community organizations and neighbors to apply so that District 2 does not lose out on available funding

to help improve and preserve our neighborhoods. Numerous applications from District 2 have previously received CPA funding, such as $650,000 this past round for the Little League baseball field at N St and near Medal of Honor Park in South Boston. It’s also crucial for those who may have been denied in the past to re-apply and continue to stay engaged with the CPA team, as the program has awarded over $119 million to support 242 projects across the city since 2018.

To the South Boston Community After a year and a half of careful consideration, contemplation, and discussions, along with another year and a half of logistics and paperwork, I have sold our family funeral home to John Reen of Brighton. John owns and operates his family’s funeral home in Brighton. He worked for Jack when he was here, and for me in South Boston for more than 20 years.

This was not an easy decision. Stepping away from the full-time operations of the O’Brien Funeral Home has been the most difficult decision I have ever had to make – both personally and professionally. However, I continue to struggle with ongoing issues with my sight and overall well-being; my children need me to be more available. So, it has become evident that it is something I have to do.

My father was a true son of South Boston. We have always been proud to work and live in this community that is like no other. I proudly represented South Boston on the ice as a kid; being able to support youth sports as a business owner has given me great joy.

I have been honored to have had the opportunity to help so many of you over the years. I am most proud of my family, and how they have served the families of South Boston for the last 112 years. I will be forever grateful to the families of South Boston who trusted us to help them through the most difficult times in their lives. For these reasons, I thank each of you.

John Reen and I had planned to make a more formal announcement after we had an opportunity to talk to each of you who have participated in our Pre-Arrangement Trust Fund. You have my word that you will receive the same level of service from John that you are used to from my family. It will still be the same funeral home, the same community, and the same level of service to which you have become accustomed. Since 2017, I’ve battled eye issues that have required medical attention with not much progress. So, when a loss of your loved one does occur, I felt that I could no longer provide the exceptional service and attention to detail that is the hallmark of this profession and also what the O’Brien Funeral Home is known for.

John Reen is a friend and has worked for my family for years. John has deep roots in his own community. He and his wife are raising four sons who someday may be in the business. His cousins and uncles already work for me; I guarantee that John and his family members will become familiar faces to all of you.

It was very important to me that 146 Dorchester Street remains a family-owned and operated funeral home. As I take this step back, I remain a part of the operations of the funeral home – just not in a full-time capacity. I am not on social media but I do know there have been some posts and comments about the recent sale. There’s a nice picture of my father and lots of comments about the good work he did for our community. There will never be another Jack O’Brien but John Reen has my complete confidence. I hope you will show him the same respect and support you’ve always shown me. After a lengthy process and the approval of the MA Licensing Board, we are in the process of notifying all of our customers who have Funeral Trusts and Insurance with us about the sale by registered mail.

I know John will continue the good work that started with John F. O’Brien in 1910, and then continued for 112 years with Edward F. O’Brien, John F. O’Brien, and Edward J. O’Brien. It will definitely continue with this next chapter of the O’Brien Funeral Home of South Boston, under the direction of John F. Reen. I love South Boston, and I am humbled that we have been honored to serve you all of these years. Mitchell Newcomb, I have no words to express how vital you were in keeping us going when you did. Your youth and maturity are amazing. I hope you know how much you are loved.

South Boston, thank you for my second chance!!! I will never forget it. Mom, Julie, Maureen, and Peter, thank you for all you do and have done. Grace, Jack, and David, I’d be nothing without you; Dylan and Delilah, thank you – I love you. And to my son, Jack O’Brien, by my side when I suffered from sleepless nights, guilt over the sale (Irish Guilt), and the time it consumed, along with some of myself in the process. I am so blessed.

T

he space doesn’t have to be large, and the chef/creator need not come from afar to become a Best Neighborhood Restaurant as named by Boston Magazine. Chef Shi Mei, 44, came to Boston from China at age four, lived in the South End throughout his childhood, and lives there now with his wife and young son. A Boston Latin School and UMass/A mherst graduate his concept for Lennox Sophia is altogether different than other fine restaurants lining South Boston streets, and at 87 A St., just a three-minute walk from Broadway Station, it is surely one of the smallest. Seating for twenty and a limited five course only, pre fixe menu, one entrée for the omnivores and one for the vegetarians, this confident and committed chef sets the tone.

“I always helped my mom cook and I knew I had a knack” he said. “My father was a cook, but he was not in favor of this at all. For that generation, they worked so you would be a doctor,

lawyer, or work in an office.

Restaurant work wasn’t glorified the way it is now. Now, you’re a rock star, but that not how it was. I worked when I was sixteen during Christmas break with my father as a dishwasher. It was an eye opener, but it did help prepare me for the whole system,” he said.

Even working in over one hundred degrees plus days without air conditioning in Quinzani’s Bakery, another early job, led him where he knew he wanted to be, though he went on to major in economics, a field he says helps in many ways.

“Numbers come natura lly,” he said as an off-hand remark, and so does his dedication to every aspect of cooking.

Shi Mei worked in local restaurants and then continued his work in California in such places as the French Laundry, then ran a restaurant in Texas, then back to California to Jackson Family Wines to learn even more. He is both studious, exacting, and f lexible in the way his chosen business demands.

“We opened in January, the dead of winter, and you just do

Chef Shi Mei not know. There was a power surge, and it took forever to get parts for the heating system,” he said and looked as if he could list a number of other challenges, but instead, in his own careful way, focuses on what he loves.

“I like to support local farmers as much as possible. And, with a limited menu, I don’t have to take any short-cuts, and people don’t have to worry about so many choices, he said. “You just do not know what will happen, and you have to be ready for anything but prepare carefully, and the deal with spontaneous issues.

It is really the fun of it,” he said it what could be considered the most nerve-wracking aspect of the cooking life. Lennox Sophia also has to manage as a BYOB operation without a liquor license in contrast to other nearby places.

The well documented challenges of hiring have also plagued Mei, but he, again is on task. “We reached out to everyone, and have who we need now,” he said.

He cooks in the small, exquisitely clean appearing open kitchen with a staff of four, and at least at this point, does not seem

to be hungering for bigger. “It’s important to get through the first year and see where we are in the industry. I think it is going well.

Any feedback is useful because it helps us get better,” he said.

So, just over the bridge from his parents who toiled to provide for him, a sister and brother, now stands this proud chef with an ease for cooking, m a na g i ng , t h i n k i ng , a nd planning. He is committed to Boston and looking to give back to the welcome South Boston has offered him at a daunting time.

Shi Mei’s mother worked in a factory in South Boston just moments from where her son is quickly making a name for himself, and theirs is yet another story of a coming of age for a place and family, “My Dad is Ok with it now and my mom is very supportive. She sees that I enjoy it,” he said. Lennox Sophia a tiny gem in a place of head spinning growth, and Boston raised and educated Shi Mei has found a place close to home to do what he has long loved.

Mayor Michelle Wu, who had already stopped in at four other National Nights Out in Boston last Tuesday, arrived at 7 p.m.

kids played endlessly on the nearby playground equipment.

The high point of the evening was the awards ceremony. Station C-6’s Sgt. Fitton and Capt. Boyle conferred two Neighborhood Watch Unit

Awards. These went to Orlando Perilla for his Communit y Service and Miguel Lopez in recognition of The Harbor Point Community Task Force, which was named “Top Crime Watch Group of the Year”.

Hearing Held on Pest Control in the City of Boston

oston City Councilors Fly n n, Breadon, Murphy, and Bok held a City Council hearing on August 1st to discuss issues relating to pest control in the City of Boston.

The hearing was intended to discuss measures that the city can take to respond to the uptick in rodent activities, as well as long term strategies that will reduce the rats and pests populations in our neighborhoods. This hearing was chaired by Councilor Kenzie Bok in the Committee on City Services and Innovation Technology, and attended by city officials from Inspectional Services and Public Works, as well as community advocates.

There have been increased reports of rodent infestations and activities during recent years in the city, as the COVID19 pandemic exacerbated rodent activities due to restaurants

and other food sources for rats and rodents closing down.

Un for t u nately, t h is issue has persisted even after our economy fully reopened. We need to ensure that the city can adequately handle these issues, including increasing en forcement, expanding pest control resources, and more p u bl ic aw a r e n e s s and outreach about proper ways of disposing trash and preventing rodent activities.

These increased reports of rodent activities is both a quality of life issue and a serious public health issue. During this meeting, current methods and new methods were discussed as a way of dealing with the issue.

Currently, there are thirteen inspectors in ISD Environmental Services who are licensed pest control applicators and they are looking to hire a fourteenth

The City has purchased carbon monoxide machines to help curb the rat population, and there is a team that performs inspections on breaches in sewer lines. The issue of trash disposal and uncovered trash bins were also discussed, with Councilors advocating for better enforcement on code violations relating to uncovered trash.

Residents are encouraged to submit pest control issues via the 311 app or by calling 311, so that the City can more efficiently keep track of requests and problem areas. For Councilor Flynn, he is calling for a dedicated working group for pest control, so that the City can proactively address the issues and come up with effective strategies for rodent control. “ M a ny n e ig h b o r s h ave

contacted me regarding their concerns about pest control, and the negative impact that rodent activities have on the quality of life. With the noticeable increase in rodents over the last year, it’s important that we discuss measures for effective pest control and keeping our streets sanitary,” said Councilor Flynn.

“This is not only a quality of life issue, but it is also a public health and public safety issue for neighbors across District 2 as well as throughout the City of Boston. I’m calling for a rodent control working group dedicated to addressing this matter, and I look forward to working with everyone on this critical issue.”

The Watershed – A Family Activity “Spend your day, With the ICA.”

ou know that the Institute of Contemporary Art (the ICA) is Boston’s newest museum. It is situated at 25 Harbor Shore Drive on the Harborwalk, near Pier 4 in South Boston’s Seaport District; it opened to the public just over 15 years ago. But you might not be aware that since then, the ICA has set up a huge new exhibition site on Marginal Street in East Boston, in what had once been a metal-working factory and warehouse. Visitors to the ICA in the Seaport and members of the ICA can reserve a seat on a ferry that will take them to a landing on the East Boston shoreline a few steps away from this site, which is

now called “The ICA Watershed”.

In fact, South Boston Online is going to recommend that you consider making a visit to The ICA Watershed a family activity that will take up most of your day in a varied, enjoyable excursion.

Here’s how it might work for you (and for your family, and perhaps even for some of your friends): First of all, get in touch with the ICA by phone or logging onto their website. It is essential for you to have reservations for the ferry in advance. The first trip to The Watershed departs from the Seaport at 11 a.m. There are regular departures (and returns) all day long after that.

You can have your tickets sent electronically, or you pick them up in person beforehand at the ICA, which is open at 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. every day except Monday. Then walk over to the check-in person on the dock (Tessa checked us in today).

We took the ferry trip skippered by Captain Andy. It was lovely trip, but it only lasted about ten minutes.

Currently, The Watershed has a really striking exhibition. The Watershed building is itself a huge structure; the works of art inside are big – very big! The building gives these works of art a gigantic space that truly shows the effort and creativity that went into all of them.

We mentioned bringing your family – we believe that your family will be amazed at the size of this art. The Exhibit’s title says it all: “REVIVAL – Materials and Monumental Forms”.

Perhaps in a future article, we’ll discuss the art itself. Suffice to say here that six skilled artists have created the monumental works you’ll see in The Watershed – Joe Wardwell, Karyn Olivier, Ibraham Mahama, El Anatsui, Madeline Hollander, and Ebony G. Patterson. The printed descriptions

posted by the ICA’s curators are clear and well worth reading. In addition, each artist’s work has televised videos for you to enjoy, along with your younger family members who are accustomed to that media format – there’s never a dull moment in The Watershed exhibit, which is very (!) well curated. And there are also videos about the history of East Boston and The Watershed building itself.

If you decide to have lunch, go to the Seabiscuit just down Marginal Street. Look around carefully, and you’ll realize that the Seabiscuit was once located in South Boston – it was on the corner of A and Third, and back then, it was called “KO Pies”. Do you remember?

After you’ve finished viewing the exhibit and walking around Eastie, enjoy your ferry trip back to the South Boston Seaport at the ICA. Your family will thank you for a memorable day.

Branch Library Book Sale Liz and Deb welcome you to their recent Library Book Sale.

The South Boston Branch Library Book Sales are operated by a volunteer group who call themselves “Friends of the Branch Library”. They accept used books that are donated, and they run public book sales at the Branch Library, usually on Saturday mornings and early afternoons. Book prices vary from $2 each for hardcover bound books down to less than $1 for paperbacks.
