Pedestrian Safety Update Blinking Pedestrian Signs at “L” & East Third Street

P

edestrian and traffic safety has long been a priority of Boston City Council President Ed Flynn and Councilor At-Large Michael Flahert y. For several years, they have been working closely with neighbors, their fellow South Boston elected officials, and the Boston Transportation Department to identify key areas and hotspot locations that need infrastructure improvements.

The Councilors continue to advocate that speeding vehicles are a Public Health Emergency that requires a combination of infrastructure improvements, slower speed limits in our re sident i a l nei g hb orho o d s , a nd s t r ic t e n f orc e me nt .

Through the advocacy of

neighbors in the area, the South Boston elected off icials, the City of Boston Transportation D e p a r t m e nt ( B T D) has recently installed a blinking LED pedestrian sign on the intersection of L Street and East Third Street, which will help bring attention to pedestrians crossing L St . This is one of the many signs of positive steps that are being taken forward to address this public safety concern in the midst of the city’s efforts to catch up and keep pace with the development and population growth of the last 20 years.

The Boston Parks and Rec Department offers these free drop-in sports centers around the city from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the week for boys and girls ages 7-14. A Love of Food, and Gratitude

F

or Chef Erick Medrano, cooking has always been more than a career choice. It’s been an expression of love and gratitude, instilled in him since he was a young boy. Raised in Guatemala, Erick grew up watching his mother and grandmother cook in a wood fire arcilla (clay oven), filling the house with the sweet smell of fresh baked bread and unique family recipes. It would be those memories that would fuel his childhood dream of one day becoming a chef.

Like countless others, Erick would venture to the U.S. with the hopes of a brighter future for himself and his family. Landing in Massachusetts, he would unwittingly a take a fateful stroll down a local street, taking notice of a spot called 224 Boston. He didn’t know what he was seeing; a tiring, former trail blazer restaurant that had welcomed everyone from all backgrounds and served groundbreaking, quality dishes in Dorchester for the first time, (some of which were engineered during Barbara Lynch’s first head chef job in Boston). He was 15 at the time, and vividly recalls that fond first memory of the city. “I asked my cousin if the place was a restaurant, complimenting the space, with no inkling that I would one day, at the age of 27, be the executive chef in that very same location”.

Erick’s path would be an unorthodox one, and humble, landing his first job in America as a dishwasher for Southie’s well known Amrhein’s. With an unwavering ferocity to learn how to cook, Erick offered to barter his time with the chef for informal training, working free shifts for weeks as he developed his skills. He was quickly moved to a paid cooking position running the fry and appetizer stations. It would be a monumental step in his future career.

Yet in his pursuit for growth, Erick knew he’d need to take risks and broaden his experiences, ultimately cooking at some of Boston’s top restaurants including, Franklin Café, Citizens, Sam’s, Trade, Sorriso,

Les Zygomates, Lincoln Tavern, Eastern Standard, Barcelona Wine Bar and several others, continuing to build his culinary understanding and learning new techniques.

When sharing his impressive resume, it rings not of a brag, but rather as an exercise in gratitude, crediting his accomplishments to the generosity of others.

“I learned from people I consider the best chefs and entrepreneurs I’ve met in my life,” Erick says. He gives praise to mentors like Nick Dixon (Broadway Restaurant Group), Richard Ansara (Tresca), John Pen (Brewr’s Fork), Brian Revelt (Citizens), Jody Adams (Trade), Emilio Garcia (Bareclona) just to name a few, (his list of recognition is as extensive as his appreciation is genuine).

“Working in these great places with so many talented people taught me how important it is to have strong values in the workplace”, says Erick. Born of those adopted values and hard work was the opportunity not only to realize his childhood dream by becoming an executive chef, but a once in a lifetime shot for any chef looking to rise. As new restaurants opened in South Boston and Charlestown by the owner’s restaurant group, there was a vacancy in the chef position at 224 that lingered for several months causing collateral damage to an already declining restaurant in need of selling.

“In Spring of 2018 the decision was made to give Erick Medrano, (former sous chef from Lincoln), and Lanie Donlan, (a South Boston icon), the keys to a 30-year-old Institutional Boston restaurant to invigorate all that 224 had lost, and find new elements it hadn’t found before”, says owner Eric Aulenback.

The results were outstanding; a 40% increase in sales over a two-year period (before covid hit in Spring of 2020).

This success had not come without its challenges. “The place, according to Google and Yelp reviews was in a bad spot,” Erick says, “the consensus was that both the food and the condition of the premises itself had suffered a good

ten years of neglect.” Winning the community back would take a team effort in collaboration with front of the house General Manager, Lanie Donlan, and Owner, Eric Aulenback.

Not only did Lanie attract new staff as well as new regulars from South Boston, but according to Aulenback, she created the home away from home atmosphere in an authentic fashion for South Boston and Dorchester residents and families in way that hadn’t been done before.

Erick adds, “Lanie brings a critical value to 224 because she doesn’t let any issue detract from her vision and values concerning the restaurant.

She’s actually one of the most amazing people I’ve met in my life”.

But none of this would have been possible without Aulenback, says Erick, “he invests in the building and in the people, providing us with the necessary tools and support to help 224 grow”. He refers to a muchneeded facelift, including a threestep restoration / redesign of the bar room, restaurant, and outdoor dining area providing better décor, in addition to a brand new floors, ceilings and a full new kitchen.

“All of those changes were inspired by having the right chef in Erick Medrano and Lanie Donlan in FOH”, says Aulenback.

It would actually be Aulenback’s faith in Erick’s tenacity that would contribute to the survival of covid, by giving Erick creative culinary freedom after they had to painfully lay off almost all front of house and half of the kitchen. “Erick’s determination to keep operating during covid was remarkable, admirable, and required innovation and revamping of the entire menu to succeed on a strictly take-out /delivery level”.

Erick adapted quickly, often pivoting from one day to the next with limited staff. His focus became comfort foods, fresh homemade pizzas, DYI food projects, and other inventive items to help keep 224 afloat. To stay positive and maintain high standards with unpretentious ingredients, he would draw inspiration from the women in his life and the memories of family in the kitchen, proving that food does indeed taste better when it is cooked with love.

Chef Erick Medrano “Each time I cook, I do so in the spirit of my family,” says Erick. “Imagining this could be a dish I would serve my mother, or my daughters gives an exceptional sentimental value for what I am doing for a living. Personalizing it puts the passion behind the action to the benefit of the client, so that they receive a home felt experience.”

It’s no surprise that Erick’s connection to family that first inspired him is the same fire that continues to drive him. “My daughters and their mom are my engine to keep striving and working hard to be better every day in my career and in my life. They are my inspiration to innovate, to cook with quality, creativity, and integrity.”

With no formal culinary education, Erick’s accomplishments are a testament to promise of the American dream – that even those not born into opportunity can achieve success with a solid work ethic and determination – and he embraces that dream with daily gratitude. “Every day I wake up, I thank God for this life and for such a wonderful opportunity in this city, in this country”, and he leaves no individual unappreciated, adding, “God Bless the customers who have supported us in good times and bad.”

Tireless in his quest for selfimprovement, Erick is now pursuing an MBA at Purdue Global University, while cherishing every moment as executive chef of 224, the place that would encapsulate all that Erick holds dear; the importance of family and a passion for cooking. The place with a magical element of home embedded in its very bones, that called to his 15-year-old self on day one of what would become a remarkable journey.

Fitness For Life Brian Castellucci Powers Up His Own Business

F

or Brian Castellucci, “Fit ne ss is not a destination.

It’s a way of li fe.”

So when he was let go during the pandemic from the gym he worked at for a dozen years, the personal trainer found a way to rebuild himself and build his own fitness business.

“I k ind of got forced into a situation,” said Brian, 34, owner of BCFitness. But he has made the best of it. ”I did a lot of virtual stuff at first. I contacted every client I’ve ever been with,” he said, noting he was able to reconnect with people and was training clients as far away as England.

“So it was kind of cool.”

When restrictions lifted a bit and he could work with clients outside, he would fill his son’s wagon with weights, drag it a half-mile from his parking spot to a field in the Fenway area, and train 10-12 people a day.

As it started getting too cold to train outside, and as more COVID restrictions were lifted, Brian contacted about 400 gyms to find space to rent. Initially, he heard from only two CrossFit gyms. As time went on, he heard from more places and currently

trains in nine locations over six neighborhoods: Norwood (where he lives with his wife and two kids), Newton, Fenway, South End, Back Bay, and South Boston.

With training locations all over the place, Brian needs to be ultra organized. Some days he starts training at 3:30 a.m. and he can go as late as 9:30 p.m. He recently went from working seven days a week to six.

But he w o u l d n ’t have it a ny ot her way.

“I’m more busy than I can handle,” he said, noting that is a good problem to have.

So he’s hired trainers who have varied personal training experience, including yoga, mixed martial arts, and CrossFit. “I’m just trying to kind of grow the business a little bit more,” he said. “Eventually, I’d like to have my own studios.”

Bria n wa s destined to succeed in personal training. He has always been an athlete. He was a standout football player in

high school (Pinkerton Academy in Derry, N.H.) and college (Plymouth State). He was a competitive powerlifter and has competed in half-marathons.

He’s a natura l at it, ma k ing his clients feel at ea se, instilling trust, a nd bu ild ing t heir conf idence.

Brian, who specializes in strength training and weight loss, believes fitness is a way of life for everyone. “The good thing about fitness is the bad thing about fitness: You’re never done; you can always be stronger, you can always be faster.”

Brian doesn’t like to have any hindrances. If you can’t run because of your knees, or you can’t climb because of your back, you find something else you can do. “You have to keep going.”

Bria n’s ph i losophy on f itness is that you can do anything at any point. “You don’t have anything holding you back from doing any sort of activity. If we train the right way, then we can do anything.”

Brian’s clients have been super supportive. “They’ve made life changes to stay with me.

With all the COVID stuff …

I mean, all personal training is a luxury, right? That’s usually the first thing to go if anyone has any financial issues. But a lot of my clients find so much value that I’m a non- negotiable, and that’s been ver y nice.”

Brian is grateful for his clients’ continued support and loyalty, especially over the past three years. “All of them have been/are an integral part of the current and future success of BCFitness. I thoroughly enjoy training each and every one and I’m so grateful that they’ve chosen me to guide them through their personal fitness journeys.

Watching them get stronger, making progress, and hitting their goals is why I do this.

“Without them I wouldn’t be where I am today, doing what I love for a living.”

t’s not that pop-up shops are unknown in South Boston, especially those located in our still very popular South Boston Seaport District. Last Sunday, despite the God-awful heat, Black Owned BOS. returned to the Seaport for an afternoon of varied and exciting shopping at 85 Seaport Boulevard, along the grassy walkway over to the harbor. The official name of this pop-up enterprise is “Seaport x Black Owned BOS. Market”; 2022 is its third year. And here’s an advance notice: Black Owned BOS. will return for their first full weekend of summer pop-up shops on Saturday

and Sunday, August 27 and 28, from 12 noon until 6 p.m. Stop by and enjoy viewing the offerings of more than 50 uniquely different vendors.

We said that the Market’s offerings were varied and different.

Yamacu is an unusual West African drink offered last Sunday. Based upon natural ginger, Yamacu, in addition to its fine taste, is an excellent digestive tonic as well as a thirst-quencher.

Another offering that actually outdid the heat wave were the hot sauces from Hillside Harvest. Pet supplies galore were vended at Stinky’s Kittens & Doggies, Too – an infinity of pet toys your own pets would enjoy. Happy Beans Roaster (“Great Coffee, Happy People”) specialized in natural coffees

– right from the beans. Original works of arts and crafts, stationery, and herbal preparations were among the many other pop-up Market offerings as well.

We intentionally mention right up front the variety we saw at “Seaport + Black Owned BOS. Market” last Sunday. That’s because many of us associate pop-ups with clothing, cosmetics, housewares, and hand-crafted jewelry. That’s accurate, of course – you’ll find many such items at pop-ups everywhere – but it’s not the complete story. One of the Market’s key attractions on Sunday was that it had something to interest everyone who came.

One eye-catching fashion design was a button-up, belted off-green jacket

in the Tiana Bay Boutique – lapelled, long sleeved and double breasted – which evoked the Princess Diana look. The black and white contrasts

by Ramsey in the Black Label pop-up were striking; the strength and heft in the necklaces crafted at “Z” Makes Beads by Zangar were remarkable.

Perhaps the liveliest impressions were made by the vivid colors that the shoppers saw everywhere in Sunday’s pop-up Market. And this was topped off by the music selected by DJ Slick Vick – she rocked the whole event for six full hours.We’ll close by repeating our reminder that “Seaport + Black Owned BOS. Market” returns for a full weekend on Saturday-Sunday, August 27 and 28, from 12 noon until 6.

Voices in Healthcare: Peter Agostinos

S

outh Boston resident and vascular surgeon, Peter Agostinos, 55, has a saying that he applies to many life situations, and it is “we will figure it out.” It conveys an optimism that makes complex problems seem manageable and distinguishes solid intellect alone from an ability to deal with the unexpected. From the University of Buffalo Medical School to the Cleveland Clinic to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and Blue Cross/Blue Shield, this physician and father of four was working at the Carney Hospital when that familiar institution serving Boston neighborhoods for generations, entered a new iteration as it became the COVID treatment facility for much of the Steward Healthcare System. Peter Agostinos liked what the hospital stood for and worked their part -time in pre-Covid days.

His role and the work changed

dramatically with COVID-19.

“There were so many respiratory issues all of a sudden,” he said. “The large hospitals had their issues, too, but they also had unlimited resources. At Carney we changed on a dime because we had to. I have seen many people die, but this was a matter of sheer numbers, and it was humbling, but not scary.” He stayed throughout and became committed full-time using his skill and guts in a medical world with unknown challenges and practices. In a characteristically forthright way, he thinks about the whole team. “The nurses carried so much of the work,” he said, “and they should get so much credit.”

So, what prepared this physician to jump in and transcend any typical comfort level and care for some of the sickest people? His curiosity and vigor may have started when he was a child relocating from his native Greece to Syracuse, New York, without English, and in what was to be a single parent household as he also dealt with asthma.

Peter Agostinos “I was Greek speaking trying to learn English and It took one teacher to say, hey, this kid isn’t stupid,” to realize his potential and get the right academic course that then led to his exceptional success. “And, my mother,” he said with an absolute commitment that one feels could stabilize the earth, “she raised me and my sister and started her own business and she is my hero. That’s it. It is all because of her,” he said of his mother now living in Quincy.

There is something about Peter Agostinos that draws you in and you share in the marvel he expresses.

“I always had an interest in how people get through tough things,” he said, and this seems to extend beyond physical illness alone. “I had an early experience with being between cultures, and maybe that is part of it,” and may be why Carney during COVID had special appeal.

“We all sign up to take care of the sick. It may have been the help I got as kid with asthma. Having someone help you breath is pretty nice. During COVID, as trying as

it was, often without even time for ethics reviews we had to make the best calls. It was rewarding and I felt needed and wanted. All of us were, even the food vendors. There was such camaraderie,” he said.

Living in South Boston for three years, he has found a most compatible home. “I’m ecstatic here,” he said, “I walk everywhere, pick up my mother, go for a run and my kids love it, and it’s on the water and near everything,” he said. A lifelong athlete he has converted a coveted garage to a gym as another life force.

On his way to yet another experience at South Shore Hospital while keeping his part -time stint at Carney, his energy and inquisitiveness seem undeterred from COVID and other life challenges. The “we will figure it out, “attitude is sure to benefit any patient through any crisis and is one intrinsic to how this man embraces life and the next big challenge.

Get Checked Each Summer Last Monday morning, July 25, from 10 until 12 noon, was the second visit this summer by the Blum Family Resource Center Van, which carries the Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s mobile programs in Sun Safety Education and Skin Cancer Screening. This Van provided free, local skin cancer screening during its two recent visits to the McCormack Bathhouse on Day Boulevard. The 39-foot Van is custom-designed.

It is outfitted with a 15-person classroom, a fully equipped examination room, and Internet access. The Blum Van visits fairs, beaches, businesses, and public events of all kinds to educate and check out people for possible skin cancer. Last Monday, Dermatologist Christine Cornejo, MD, from Dana Farber conducted these exams. Dr. Cornejo spent the morning in the Van performing exams, which are followed up with diagnoses and recommendations. And to repeat, these important medical services are free. Blessedly free.

M Street Park Summer Sports Center Offers Fun, Sports, Camaraderie

outh Boston Online stopped by M Street Park (Lee Playground) Tuesday morning to check out the city’s Summer Sports Center.

The Boston Parks and Rec Department offers these free drop-in sports centers around the city from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the week for boys and girls ages 7-14.

Each location offers instruction in several popular sports. And every week, clinics are held on different activities, such as soccer and hockey.

The Bruins’ mascot, Blades, made an appearance at M Street Park recently.

Five kids had signed up for a day of fun, sports, and camaraderie Tuesday. The program at M Street has about 20 staff members,

providing a fantastic kid-to-staffer ratio. Baseball was a highlight for the kids that day, while many of the staffers took to the basketball court.

On any given day, up to 20 kids may show up. Since the city has many summer options, the

kids rotate between the activities.

Breakfast and lunch are provided; food that doesn’t get consumed goes to local shelters.

The staffers say the centers have brought back a sense of normalcy after the pandemic. It’s

evident on the kids’ faces that they are enjoying themselves.

PETITION FOR APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIAN OF A MINOR

one-time rebates for low and middle-income residents State Representative David Biele joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in passing an economic development bill that utilizes American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22) surplus funds, and bonds to make significant investments across the state’s economy. Equally important, the legislation also provides significant tax relief to residents and beginning in 2023 while simultaneously providing one-time rebates to low and middle-income residents.

“I was proud to join my colleagues in passing a generational economic development package which will provide over $500 million in targeted relief through changes to our tax code, while simultaneously investing in our economy and providing rebates for taxpayers,” said Rep. Biele.

Following $500 million worth of premium pay bonuses that were issued in March and June of 2022 under the Legislature’s Essential Employee Premium Pay Program, the economic development bill passed by the House includes one-time rebates of $250 for a taxpayer who files an individual return and $500 for married taxpayers who file joint returns. These rebates are expected to be issued to about two million Massachusetts residents who reported earning between $38,000 and $100,000 for individual filers, and between $38,000 and $150,000 for joint filers in 2021. The one-time rebates will not be subject to state’s personal income tax.

The bill passed by the House would also make significant changes to the Massachusetts tax code to provide structural relief to millions of residents across all income levels, including: Increasing the Child and Dependent Care Credit from $180 per child to $310 per child, as well as eliminating the current cap of $360 for two or more children. This change is expected to impact over 700,000 families; Increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) from 30 percent to 40 percent of the federal credit, which is expected to impact about 396,000 taxpayers with incomes under $57,000; Increasing the Senior Circuit Breaker Tax Credit from $750 to $1,755.

Currently, the Department of Revenue caps this credit and increasing it to $1,755 by statute is expected to impact over 100,000 taxpayers who own or rent residential property in Massachusetts as their principal residence; Increasing the rental deduction cap from $3,000 to $4,000, which is expected to impact about 881,000 taxpayers; and Increasing the estate tax threshold from $1 million to $2 million and eliminating the “cliff ” effect which would tax just the value of the estate that exceeds $2 million, not the entire estate. This is expected to impact about 2,500 taxpayers.
