Senator Collins Supports Relief for Taxpayers

Seniors and Low-Income Residents Prioritized

S

enator Collins announced his support for the $700 million tax relief package proposed by Governor Charlie Baker as Massachusetts residents face financial hardships due to the pandemic and climbing inflation.

The tax relief package is primarily aimed at easing the burden of taxpayers hit by

financial hardship in recent years, including seniors, and low-income residents. With inflation raising prices on gas, food, and housing, Massachusetts is in a financial position to provide assistance, having run a $5 billion budget surplus.

The tax cuts include doubling the senior circuit breaker tax credit, raising the rental deduction cap from $3,000 to $5,000, doubling the dependent care and household dependent care credits, increasing the threshold for “no tax status,” doubling the estate tax threshold, and changing the short-term capital gains tax to 5%.

“Our commitment to fiscal responsibility has placed the Commonwealth in a unique position to provide direct financial assistance to those who need it most,” said Senator Collins. “I hope that our residents are able to see immediate relief as we continue our economic recovery.”

The Andrew Square Civic Association held a Neighborhood Cleanup on Monday, one of three for the summer. A handful of neighbors gathered at the flagpole on Preble and Dorchester manned with gloves and garbage bags. Scott and Todd Westerman and Gerry Craig participated because they want to make sure their neighborhood is clean and safe. The Red Sox, by the Numbers

Y

ou don’t have to be told that in professional sports, numbers are an important tool for rating teams and individual players. Beginning with the scoreboards, which every game in every sport prominently displays, numbers measure all professional games, every team’s standing, and each player’s talents.

Here are a few current numbers concerning the Red Sox:

As of Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox had played 88 games – 47 wins and 41 losses, for a respectable W-L percentage of .534. Despite being “respectable”, the Sox were only in third (3rd) place in the American League’s East Division, closely behind the Tampa Bay Rays in second (2nd) place at 47-40 with a .540 W-L percentage. The New York Yankees lead the A.L. East Division by 14 games, with a W-L record of 61-25 and a .709 percentage. No other team in all of Major League Baseball comes anywhere close to the Yankees’ .700+ percentage, so basic numbers would indicate the Yanks right now are the best team in baseball. And indeed they are!

In the American League East, the other four teams after the Yankees are tightly bunched together. The Sox, Tampa Bay

Rays, and Toronto Blue Jays are less than two games apart in the standings; all three have win-loss percentages in the low .500s. The Baltimore Orioles, who had been a last-place doormat early in the 2022 season, have posted nine straight victories that bring them to an exact .500 percentage (44W-44L).

Overall, the American League East numbers are stronger than the other five divisions in Major League Baseball, with a joint W-L percentage of .539. The Sox have 68 more games to play after next week’s All-Star break. Thirtyeight (38) of them will be against the other teams in the A.L. East Division. And believe it or not, the Sox actually have losing records (so far) against all the other four A.L. East teams – New York, Tampa Bay, Toronto, and even Baltimore.

Those numbers predict the

third-place Red Sox must play many difficult and challenging games in August and September (nine of them against the first place Yankees; another nine of them against the second place Rays) in pursuit of a wild-card playoff position. The A.L. East race is exciting – it’s the one to watch.

Very encouraging numbers were posted by Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale in his 2022 debut Tuesday evening. He threw 78 pitches over five full innings; 53 of them were strikes! He left the game with the Sox leading 2-0 over the Rays.

More Red Sox numbers are to come after next Tuesday’s AllStar game, which will feature appearances by three (3) talented Sox team members – Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts, and J.D. Martinez. Nice going, guys!

The Best Day of 2022?(or Perhaps the Best Night?)

or the last week or so, many of the media have been proclaiming that yesterday – Wednesday, July 13, 2022 – would be Boston’s best day of this year. Radio, the internet, and even the Old Farmer’s Almanac have stated this with language that includes “no precipitation”, “pack your beach bags”, and “the most perfect day of 2022”.

Obviously, the Best Day of the Year has to have clear skies, certainly without any rain or even many clouds. And predicting that the Best Day will occur in sunny July is pretty much a safe bet – July has always had the most sunshine of any month here in Boston. If nothing else, the long summer days in July take 15 hours from sunrise to sunset.

Two other factors that make for a “Best Day” are the temperature and the humidity. Starting the “Best Day” around 80 degrees and stopping short of 90 degrees is optimum. And the air should be at 50% relative humidity or less. Finally, some

breezes are welcome, however no winds need apply. Yesterday was a little on the hot, muggy side but the few cumulus clouds in the South Boston sky dispersed early in the day.

Wednesday the 13th, our so-called “Best Day”, neatly positioned itself between showers before sunrise and the chance of rain today. And then came yesterday evening.

It was a “Super Moon” evening.

Yesterday night’s full moon came nearer to the Earth than at any other time this year; after rising over the Bay to the southeast, it truly dominated the night sky. The moon’s orbit averages 238,000 miles from Earth, a distance that equals approximately ten times around our planet. At just over 222,000 miles from us, Wednesday’s Super Moon was 16,000 miles closer than usual.

Other names for this moon include “Buck Moon” and “Thunder Moon”.

After any remaining rain clouds disappear, look for the Super Moon again tonight and during the weekend. Even though it’ll be waning, the moon will still look almost as spectacular as it did on Wednesday.

Urban Oasis MaryAnne Miller’s Backyard Garden a Gift to Herself and Bees

M

aryAnne Miller’s b a c k y a r d g a rd e n oasis on I Street is a haven for bees.

“Bees are our friends,” she said.

“I love bees.”

MaryAnne has myriad pollinatorfriendly plants to attract the bees.

“I understand these are our friends that are too busy working to bother you. So you need to keep the bees going.

“I’m obsessed with bees.”

MaryAnne combines plants that she knows the bees like and that she likes as well, such as sage, salvia, dill, calendula, mini sunflowers, wildflowers, dahlias, lobelia, and Dusty Millers (in honor of her last name).

“I’ve had many, many

bumblebees, which makes me so happy,” said MaryAnne, who has lived in her I Street house for 45 years.

Her garden is a retirement/ pandemic gift to herself. It was created on the cusp of when the pandemic got really bad. “I don’t know what inspired me at that moment,” she said.

The neighbors had put up a fence that provides an amazing backdrop to MaryAnne’s yard.

She heard that Jeff Mc Ardle of Cuchulainn Construction was doing backyard work so she reached out to him. And Peter DiBona did the beautiful landscaping.

They transformed her small backyard into the oasis it is today.

“It’s just a really smart layout for a very small space,” MaryAnne, 67, said. “And that feels like you have

another room. Another two rooms.”

MaryAnne’s son, Michael, was also instrumental in putting the garden together. And her dog, Ziggy, “helps” in the garden, too.

Her love of bees stems from her time at Mt. Ida College, where she was Dean of Student Success. “I just became transfixed with the nature that was there in the urban campus.

“While I was devastated that the college closed, I took a few lessons from it because you could really make a lot out of a really small space.

“So, this makes me happy.

This is what I spend my days doing.”

MaryAnne, who also has tomato and basil plants, has always been interested in gardening, but it really took off over the pandemic.

Her beloved late husband, Mitch,

loved gardens and flowers, too.

MaryAnne began experimenting more with gardening about 10 years ago while working for Bunker Hill Community College after she brought in a landscaper for the Chelsea campus.

“I may be a higher ed administrator by profession, but I’m a gardener at heart,” she said.

MaryAnne has advice for anyone who is interested in gardening. “Just be bold. Read up on the plants you like.

Study your space over the course of four seasons, over the course of a week at different points … see what kind of light you’re getting,” she said. “And buy the best soil, even if it costs a ton of money.”

While she loves all flowers, her favorite is the pansy. “And there is pansies; that’s for thoughts,” she said, quoting Shakespeare.

Evangelos “Lucky” Adamos-Nomikos

H

e a lt hc a re is a challenging profe ssion, a nd addiction services is among the most daunting. The nature of the issue thwarts patients and those who work with them in a process requiring enormous patience and determination with societal stigma present. Many providers stay clear from this work fearing endless frustration and the utter skill and understanding needed, but the Gavin Foundations Clinical Director, Evangelos “Lucky” Adamos-Nomikos, 37, isn’t one of them. He believes “anyone can recover” and that is what his guiding star every day.

“I have been in recovery myself for ten years, and after getting a degree in Counseling Psychology and Mental Health

C ou nseling, I worked in residential jobs and always heard about the “Gavin,” and knew it would offer opportunities. There is no place I would rather be,” he said about this professional home of the past five and a half years.

He grew up in Dedham, the son of a psychologist and close to the family-owned dry cleaners, and perhaps because of this he knew early in his journey that something both public facing and deeply personal would be his calling. “I always found people fascinating. I never wanted to do anything else,” he said, as he prepared for a week of clients, groups, and families each with their own story to tell and mountain to climb.

“We are client centered, always. Even as the organization has grown, you think it would become more distant, but the client is always f irst. Every treatment plan is different,” he said. “Most come from South Boston and surrounding communities; men, and women, homeless to financially secure.

Some want individual help, or groups, and couples and family work. We do what is in the interest of the person because that is where their motivation is and best chance at recovery,” he said.

None of this work is done in isolation and Nomikos is quick to credit John McGahan and Barbara Samek of the Gavin Foundation leadership.

“They are accessible in a way that usually doesn’t happen.

They are caring, and provide an env iron ment where everyone is connected,” he said.

During COVID, this lifeline stayed open with necessar y precautions, and Telehealth was also offered as an option. In typical style, “Lucky” looks at the opportunity. “We were so focused on in person, and through this we learned new skills. When I look at someone in person, I see their skin, breathing,

posture for example, and I had to learn how to try to look at someone on a screen and find out how they were really doing without that advantage,” he said.

Did you ever think about leaving during the scariest days?

This clinician either doesn’t relate to the question or is so compelled by the work that he said simply a “No, they needed us the most,” referring to the stress imposed by COVID to lives already in the balance. “It’s not to say the work doesn’t take an emotional toll, but we see improvement and that gives us optimism,” he said. That steady attitude underlies the energy and calm for this remarkable leader/clinician and Gavin team.

Ash Trees in South Boston

T

he idea for this article started with a call from Katie Dubow, the President of the Garden Media Group. She referred us to the Needham branch of Hartney Greymont, a local division of Davey Tree Experts. As a result of her call, Zachary Bolles, an arborist for Hartney Greymont and a graduate of UMass Amherst, granted us an interview – all about ash trees.

Were you aware that South Boston is home to a large number of ash trees? There are several on K Street at Second, two tall ones on West Broadway at A, and many along other local streets. You can spot them by the shape of their leaves, which have five (5), seven (7), or nine (9) large, pointed leaflets arranged opposite to each other with one at the tip. Arborists call these “pinnately compound leaves”. They maintain an intense, shiny green up until fall weather arrives. Ash trees that are injured or ailing quickly put out fast-growing slender branches known as “suckers”. Another identifying mark is the ash tree’s bark, which is thick, grayish, and marked with deep, sinuous, vertical ridges. North America has millions upon millions of ash trees, even in these modern times.

Why is the ash popular in urban neighborhoods like South Boston?

Because the dense leaves on an ash provide deep shade, even from a single tree. Just as important, the ash

tree grows well in compacted earth like the soils found under sidewalks, in popular parks, and next to curbs along heavily-traveled streets. And mature ash trees need little or no fertilizing from season to season, even though they can grow to 50 feet or more. Also, we think that dark green ash trees are a nice contrast to honey locusts and their lighter green leaves.

But an ash tree isn’t just decorative. Ash is a strong hardwood, ideal for structural beams, handles on heavy-duty tools, and baseball bats like the original Louisville Sluggers!

Ash wood is extremely useful.

Nowadays, ash trees in America have one key enemy – an enemy called the “emerald ash borer”. Arborists typically abbreviate this name to “EAB”, so we’ll do that as well in this article. The EAB is an invasive species of beetle about a half-inch long, with bright metallic green wings on its back.

It is not from here originally; it is native to China and other areas in the Far East. The EAB was first discovered here fairly recently, in southeastern Michigan near Detroit during the summer 20 years ago. It was likely carried into the U.S. on wooden packing materials, such as the pallets that hold automotive parts imported from Asia.

The EAB only attacks ash trees – nothing else, no other species. Adult EAB beetles consume ash tree leaves with little damage to the tree, but when EAB larvae hatch, they feed on the ash tree’s inner bark. This causes far more serious damage,

Identifying Our Ash Trees. because it prevents the ash from sending water and nutrients to its treetop, leading to stunted growth and eventually, to the total loss of the tree.

Unfortunately, the EAB has now spread to around 40 states and up into Canada, too. EABs are present in Massachusetts and all six New England states. Some locations actually quarantine firewood, so that the EABs suspected to be in that firewood can’t spread. At least one source of EAB information claims the infestation in the U.S. has resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars of losses to property owners, tree nurseries, wood product industries, and cities and towns. the EAB has certainly been accelerated by the global warming trend.

When you get a few minutes, take quick looks at the smaller ash trees along K Street near Second. Note that their treetops seem stunted; those ash trees have grown a lot of suckers near eye level. We certainly aren’t arborists, but note how much more robust the tall ash trees on West Broadway between A and Dot Ave seem to be. Enjoy their cool shade. And let us know about any other South Boston stands of ash trees you are familiar with.

Ombrello Debuts

ully entitled “Ombrello at The Superette”, Ombrello opens its trellis gate from Thursdays through Sundays, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This is a new pop-up concept that offers an outdoor, seasonal, warm weather oasis within The Superette – the Seaport’s newest retail and dining location on Pier 4 Boulevard. Ombrello has created several individual or shareable snack boxes – charcuterie, vegetarian, and a (newly offered) sweet dessert box.

All of these can be enjoyed on the umbrellaed patio – a colorful 1,100 square foot space inspired by the Italian Riviera – or they can easily be picked up at Ombrello’s service stand and taken elsewhere – into nearby Rock Park or over to the Waterfront. Beverages include wine and beer on the premises, along with various soft drinks

to go. Ombrello partnered with Kured to create their snack boxes, thus combining the convenience
