Docemus Starts Up

Walsh Gym Reopens Monday, July 13, at Noon

t’s commonly called “the Walsh Gym” or the “Walsh McDonough Gym”, but this facility’s full name is “The McDonough Gym/John ‘Stretch’ Walsh Community Center”. So there! Just a few words about what it offers: upstairs is the fully professional quality basketball court, sometimes split in two so football drills can also be run in parallel. Downstairs is the Game Room: pool, ping-pong, tables for lunch, and a TV area. But the Walsh Gym has been closed since the COVID-19 pandemic struck us in the middle of March.

just a gym. It offers a full slate of activities to young boys and girls, especially teenagers. We can only give you a few examples of these activities, but we want to remind you that COVID-19 is still with us. Everyone who uses the Walsh Gym – staff, members, and visitors – must “follow all the rules”, like Social Distancing, face coverings (masks will be provided, if needed), and frequent wash-ups.

To begin with, the Walsh Gym is only scheduling its hours and activities for a week

They have already reached out a few schools in South Boston.

BPL to GO!

outh Boston Online wants to be sure you “get the word” about using our Branch Library at 646 East Broadway once again.

Our Branch is now enrolled in what’s called the “BPL to GO!” program. This program opened last Monday afternoon, the 6th, for pick-ups (by appointment only), which you must order in advance and then drop by to pick them up. Hours for this ser vice are basically during weekday a f ternoons – no morning, evening, or weekend hours yet - not while we are still in the early days of Phase Three of COVID-19 recovery. And by the way, you can also obtain CDs and DVDs as well as books.

The “BPL to GO!” program began on June 22 at Codman, Mattapan, East Boston, Jamaica Plain, and the Central Library in Copley Square. As of this Monday, the Boston Public Library opened “BPL to Go!” in Brighton, Charlestown, Lower Mills, West Roxbury, and here in South Boston. BPL Branches, including ours in South Boston,

are not yet open to normal Library visits, but they continue to offer a wide range of digital events and online resources. You can google up “BPL to Go!” for more complete information, or you can visit the Boston Public Library website at www.pbl.org.

You may reserve the books, CDs, or DVDs you want by “placing a hold” on your choice at bpl.org or by calling the South Boston Branch Library at 617268-0180. If you need assistance scheduling your pick-up, call 617-536-5400. When your held items are ready to pick up, you will receive a link to schedule that pick-up. Your items will be held for 14 days; at the Branch Library, instructions for the actual pick-up will be posted on the front door. You’ll be asked to phone the Branch Library’s number to let them know you are outside. You can also return borrowed items to the Library at this time. Please remember to wear a face covering and to maintain Socia l Distancing whenever you are physically picking up or returning any items.

The Boston Public Library is an extremely impressive organization. Just its size alone is worth noting; it’s one of the largest libraries in America. The Library of Congress is the biggest library in the nation (of course).

Second in size is New York City’s Public Library that serves over 8MM (8,000,000) people.

For third largest in America, the Boston Public Library is tied with Harvard University’s Widener Library. South Boston Online isn’t sure whether it’s an honor to be tied with Harvard in intercollegiate athletics, but it’s certainly an achievement to have a library that’s as big as theirs.

Councilors Flynn & Essaibi-George File Resolution Celebrating 30th Anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act

C

it y Councilor Ed Flynn a nd Cit y C ou nci lor Annissa Essaibi-George filed a resolution at this week’s Council meeting to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and to affirm the City Council’s commitment in advocating for persons with disabilities.

Signed into law in 1990, the ADA prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in areas such as in jobs, schools, and public spaces. It guarantees that persons with disabilities are entitled to the same rights as those without disabilities, and provides construction standards on bu i ld i ng ac c e s sibi l it y.

According to a 2018 US Census Bureau conducted A merican Communit y Sur vey, 12.2% of Boston residents identify as persons with disabilities. This includes difficulties in self-care, hearing, vision, independent living, cognition, and mobility.

In the City of Boston, the Disabilities Commission works with individuals with disabilities to ensure that they have full and equal participation in all aspects of life, as well as works to address ADA compliance and accessibility improvements in City Hall.

The Office of Language and Communication Access a lso works to ensure that all City departments have translation and interpretation services for non-English speaking residents and residents with disabilities.

This work builds on the ADA, and it is important we continue to support our persons with disabilities in city government.

“As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the ADA, it’s critical that we again affirm that persons with disabilities deserve to be treated with dignity and respect,” Councilor Flynn said. “As someone with family and friends who are disabled, I understand the importance of the

ADA and accessibility. I want to thank Councilor Essaibi-George for her partnership in this resolution and for her advocacy. I will continue to work with my colleagues, Mayor Walsh, the Disabilities Commission and other agencies to make sure that our residents with disabilities receive equal access to programs, ser v ic e s, a nd oppor t u nit ie s.”

A Summer Service

L

ast Thursday, July 2, an early evening Summer Service took place at Carson Beach on the patio area of the McCormack Bathhouse. At 6 p.m., members of the Fourth Presbyterian Church, the South Boston Seaport Catholic Collaborative, and the Hub Church were joined by members of the Roxbury Presbyterian Church for a celebration of summer, along with fervent prayers for those enmeshed in the coils of COVID-19 and the scourge of racism, both of which that have reared their ugly heads during the first half of this year of 2020.

And despite the serious issues we are all facing, Thursday’s Summer Service was a joyful occasion, not least because of the smilingly benign, high summer weather that prevailed over Carson Beach. And also, the many references to the “need for community”

The Service began as the sun was still high in the sky; 45 minutes later, as the Summer Service closed, the sun was still just as bright and warm, and had only just begun its descent to the horizon.

The themes of the Summer Service were Healing, Justice, and Peace. Led by the Rev. Burns Stanfield, a general confession of both individual and common sins was proclaimed. The Gospel excerpt was

Luke’s story of Christ returning to the synagogue in Nazareth and reading from the Prophet Isaiah to announce His mission. Sr. Monica read from Isaiah, quoting the passages about breaking the yoke and healing the open wounds left by our wrongdoings, i.e., racism. Nita Holder then delivered an impassioned sermon about of the need for a conversation on race, as uncomfortable as that might be. “We can’t do it by ourselves.”

Fr. Peter Defazio spoke about how “we need to listen!” The Civil Rights Act was passed 56 years ago on July 2, 1964. There are signs of progress; there are (still) many signs of resistance. An address on “community” was delivered in Spanish to those at the Summer Service. The Fourth’s Associate Pastor Katie Cole prayed that we not use the Christian Faith to hurt others. Charlie Dunn from South Boston’s Hub Church conferred the final Benediction on the assembled crowd. Music was provided with guitar and vocals by Chris from the Fourth Church and Issa from Roxbury Presbyterian accompanying on his drum. The assembled crowd joined them in an enthusiastic chorus of “Let It Shine!”

And for those of you wondering, face coverings and six-foot Social Distancing were used throughout last Thursday’s Summer Service, as well as disinfection wipes on the microphone.

Saint Monica, Pastor Peter DeFazio, the volunteers at Monica’s Kitchen, the Good Samaritan Ministry, and the members of St. Monica’s Church invite you to partake of three Peace Breakfasts this summer – courtesy of Monica’s Kitchen, and held in the church’s side yard where the statue of St. Augustine is set. These Peace Breakfasts will take place on three Saturday mornings from

9 to 11 a.m., on July 18, August 8, and September 5. Everyone is welcome, the Peace Breakfasts are all “Take-Out” (and free), and the arrangements will include the necessary rules to keep you safe during the COVID-19 crisis.

Spanish will be spoken, as needed.

These are enjoyable, low-keyed, summertime events. The last one on September 5 will be a “Back to School” Peace Breakfast. Don’t miss any of them. See you there!

Twenty-three Canadian geese (Branta canadensis, sometimes called “Canada geese”) made an amphibious landing on Carson Beach last week.

No defense against their invasion was made by those who were onshore at the time (they didn’t dare). These large, aggressive, migratory birds originally nested in Canada, but have proven themselves adaptable to many other areas – England, Ireland, all over the U.S. , and even in New Zealand.

They consume a plant-based diet. As you can see, they aren’t wearing masks and certainly are not practicing “Social Distancing”. These geese don’t seem to be afraid of anything.

The Gym will sometimes be scheduled for certain age groups, like 12 t0 15 year olds from 1 to 3 p.m., and evenings after 8 p.m. for teen activities over 15 years of age.

Gate of Heaven, St. Brigid Parishes and St. Augustine Chapel News Thank you Fr. Karlo Many thanks to Fr. Karlo Hocurscak for his ministry to our Parishes these past months. He was assigned to us last November for a temporary assignment as our Parochial Vicar. In March he volunteered to assist with the COVID-19 priest response team. Fr. Karlo ministered along with other priests to those sick with COVID-19 who were in need of the sacraments. We thank him for his ministry to our Parishes and to the sick these past eight months. He will be moving on to his new assignment following next weekend’s Masses on July 13th. Thank you Fr. Karlo - you will be in our prayers!

Congratulations to Monsignor Liam - 35th Anniversary of Priesthood Congratulations to Msgr. Liam Bergin on the anniversary of his priestly ordination. He was ordained for the Diocese of Ossory, Ireland on July 13, 1985.

Welcome Fr. Christopher Boyle - Our Parishes New Parochial Vicar We welcome Fr. Christopher Boyle as our new Parochial Vicar. Fr. Boyle was assigned by Cardinal Sean O’Malley to our Parishes - St. Brigid Parish, Gate of Heaven Parish and St. Augustine Chapel effective July 15, 2020. Fr. Boyle was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Boston on May 18, 2019 by Cardinal Sean at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. Raised on the South Shore, he is the fourth of 13 children of Arthur and Judith Boyle. He received a B.A. in communications from St. Joseph’s College, Maine. Fr. Boyle taught and coached at Catholic Memorial High School, before entering St. John’s Seminary for his priestly studies. He is an alumnus of the Pontifical North American College at Rome. Fr. Boyle is looking forward to his new assignment in South Boston. We are very happy to welcome Fr. Boyle to our Parish Community and School Community!

Mayor Walsh Announces New Ramp Initiative for Outdoor Dining Tuesday, July 7, 2020 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced a new ramp initiative to increase accessibility to outdoor dining amidst the COVID-19 public health emergency. Restaurants that have been granted a temporary license to have seating in a parking space or on the street are eligible to request a portable ramp.

“It’s important that as we reimagine our streets to accommodate outdoor dining during our reopening process, we do so in a way that is equitable to everyone who uses our roads and sidewalks, including those with disabilities,” said Mayor Walsh.

“We are glad to include accessibility as an integral part of our permitting process, and thank the restaurants for welcoming the use of portable ramps in their spaces as they continue to safely reopen.”

Since outdoor dining was permitted as part of the State’s reopening plan, the Mayor’s Commission for Persons with Disabilities has been working with the Licensing Board, the Boston Transportation Department and other City departments to ensure that new dining spaces are accessible and that the

path of travel on sidewalks is not obstructed.

Accessible Parking Spaces in the city remain available for those who need them.

take the necessary steps to protect yourself and others,” said Mayor’s Commission for Persons with Disabilities Commissioner Kristen McCosh. “Stay six feet away from others when possible, always wear a face covering, and wash your hands often.”

Restaurants who have filed for outdoor seating can fill out the Portable Ramp Request Form to assess the need

for a ramp. Ramps will be provided on a rolling basis, along with an accessibility toolkit that contains information on setting up the ramp, a laminated sign with information on accessibility that restaurants can hang up, and best practices on providing service to customers with disabilities. Ramps will be returned to the City at the end of the season and repurposed in other initiatives.

“We appreciate the City giving us outdoor space to welcome our guests back, and we’re very excited to install our portable ramp to increase access to guests with disabilities,” said Heather Lynch, partner of Black Lamb in the South End. This initiative is made possible with support from Citi as part of the Empowered Cities Initiative which is providing the City

of Boston $200,000. Remaining funds not used for the portable ramp initiative will be used for financial empowerment for people with disabilities.

The City has granted over 300 temporary extensions onto outdoor space to serve patrons. The Licensing Board is actively issuing approvals for temporary extensions on private and public property, and applications will continue to be reviewed and approved on a rolling basis. The

Disabilities Commission is working with the Licensing Board to conduct outreach throughout Boston’s neighborhoods to encourage restaurants to apply for this program, particularly women- and minorityowned businesses (WMBEs). Applications and guidance area available on Boston.gov.

The state building code, under the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board (AAB), requires restaurants to have an accessible route to tables. With seating now being extended onto the street, the City was granted a temporary MAAB variance that will allow all restaurants in Boston to use portable ramps in order to create an accessible route. This helped to reduce procedural and financial barriers for individual restaurant owners, and it will create accessibility for people of all ages and abilities.

As business owners, employers, and employees navigate an evolving reopening process and COVID-19-related assistance, the City of Boston created and maintains a “Reopening Boston” webpage, which includes industry-specific guidance and requirements, resources and tools, and more information on available City services. The City of Boston has created a number of useful guides and resources for small businesses impacted by COVID-19, including a new platform to advertise and purchase PPE and cleaning supplies, Open Businesses in Boston and Support Boston Restaurants, platforms which helped businesses to publicly share that they are open and direct residents to support local establishments.

Mejuri Now Open

he story of Mejuri’s opening in t he South Boston Seaport began early in the spring – unfortunately, when the Coronavirus really started showing its strength. Originally scheduled for April 30, their opening has just occurred as of three weeks ago, June 15. And it has gone well, very well indeed.

The hours at Mejuri are 10 to 6, six days a week, and 12 noon to 6 on Sundays. These hours include all necessary precautions to protect against the current pandemic.
