irst of all, South Boston Online wishes you Independence Day celebrations that are really enjoyable and memorable. Please have yourself a great Holiday.

A few facts and figures: In 1776, Thomas Jefferson drafted America’s final Declaration of Independence, making some last changes and adjustments. This document was completed on July 4 that year. Our Independence and the Declaration itself had been authorized a couple of days before the Fourth – 243 years ago. The final version of the Declaration of Independence was approved, and then it was copied and sent out to the 13 colonies, where it was read to the eagerly awaiting public. That custom continues down to this year of 2019. The Declaration of Independence will be read from the balcony of the Old State House at mid-morning this Thursday, July 4.

American history has been

filled with events that have had great impact. In the 1800s, our Civil War began only 85 years after the Declaration of Independence was first put forth. We fought for the cause of freedom in two World Wars during the 1900s (the so-called “American Century”); we have since occupied a position of world leadership. As Americans, we seem to have a lot of issues facing us these days. But as a nation, we have endured far more difficult times than anything happening at this moment – especially all that silliness now occurring in our nation’s capital.

Please use this year’s Independence Day as a day to celebrate. Use it as a day with meaningful observances as well. South Boston Online strongly suggests that you plan to attend the City of Boston’s Off icial Independence Day Commemoration. This begins

Independence Day Thursday morning, the Fourth, with a Flag Raising and a Parade at 9 a.m. on City Hall Plaza. The Parade will proceed down Tremont to the Old Granary Burial Ground for a Laying of Wreaths. It will then go up Washington Street to the Old State House, at the spot on the Freedom Trail where the Boston Massacre occurred in 1770. A full reading of the Declaration of Independence from the Old State House balcony will follow, just as it did on Thursday morning, July 18, 1776.

If you have a family, bring your children. They may object, but if you tell them about The Declaration of Independence, they will remember the Day. And do you know how long it takes to read the entire Declaration of Independence? From “When in

the Course of human events …” through its last line, “We mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and out sacred Honor” takes just ten minutes.

Yes, only ten minutes! And please remember: after that short, tenminute document we call our “Declaration of Independence” was put into effect, the world changed.

Changed for good!

South Boston Online would also like to suggest that we begin a patriotic project here in South Boston. Despite our high regard for our veterans, we do not have a commemorative monument to the veterans of World War I, a conflict with American casualties that totaled 117,000 – 103 of these casualties were from South Boston, including the redoubtable

Michael “Mickey” Perkins.

Perhaps you know that a Commission was set up years ago in Washington, DC, to build a national Memorial to the American casualties in World War I. It has taken them years just to select a site; it is not yet fully funded. Its target date is now in 2021 – 105 years after we entered the War; 103 years after the War ended.

That’s a bureaucratic disgrace.

We fought in World War I only for the cause of freedom – the same motivation that led us to our own Declaration of Independence on the Fourth of July, 1776. We did not fight for gain. World War I wasn’t even on our own land. We were helping our allies in Europe preserve their independence, and to stay free from the Kaiser’s domination.

Let’s see if South Boston can show Washington a thing (or two) about Memorials.

PTSD Awareness Day in South Boston

by Rick Winterson “PTSD” stands for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder – a very serious mental problem that can cause severe physical problems as well. June 27 was set aside as National PTSD Awareness Day nine years ago. In 2014, the U.S. Senate set aside all of June as National PTSD Awareness Month. Approximately one out every 15 people in the U.S. are (or will be) aff licted with PTSD. While anyone can suffer from PTSD, it is often associated with combat veterans because so many of them experience this disorder. Ten (10) percent of the veterans of the Gulf War and 14% of War with Iraq veterans have suffered from PTSD. After Vietnam, a very high 30% of its veterans came down with PTSD. Here in South Boston, Joe Cook has set up the Timothy “Doc” Cook Memoria l Scholarship Fund. Tim “Doc” served as a medic in Vietnam.

There’s no need to describe the sights he saw over there.

It’s enough to know that he heroically healed others wherever and whenever he could, even fabricating his own special equipment.

He eventua lly succumbed to the effects of PTSD after he returned to the U.S. Early last Thursday evening, June 27, as the sun was going down over Boston’s skyline on Dorchester Heights, our State Rep. David Biele presented a set of formal Resolutions from the Massachusetts House of Representatives to Joe Cook and four of his associates – Brian Ba rtholomew, Matt Kelley, Libby Albanese, and Pat Evans.

Dav id spoke emphat ic a l ly of the urgent need to let the public know more about PTSD, especially that PTSD itself, like any other war wound, carries “no stigma”. It was a fitting way to remember Timothy “Doc” Cook and to observe National PTSD Awareness Day.

Harborfront Neighborhood Alliance (the HNA): South Boston

W

hen you have a moment, take a quick look at the original configuration of Boston Harbor back in the 1700s, and then compare it to the outline of the Harbor today. Pay close attention to the development of South Boston. Note that the Harbor is much smaller, and obviously much, much busier. In particular, that applies to Boston’s Inner Harbor.

There are two recent steps that have been taken to protect public interests regarding the Boston Waterfront: one is the updating of the Public Waterfront Act itself (Chapter 91), and the other is the formation of the “Harborfront Neighborhood Alliance” (the NHA, founded in 1918). Chapter 91 stems all the way back to colonial times, with many roots in the 1800s. It deals with public rights to, and ownership of, the sea and its shores.

The NHA exists to bring together groups that represent residential areas by and along the harborside.

The NHA pursues a communitydriven approach to issues of growth, equity, development, preservation, and public access along the Boston Waterfront.

The NHA is a member of the Boston Waterfront Partners.

The ten organizations that make up the NHA are located in areas ranging from Jeffries Point (East Boston), through Charlestown and the Navy Yard, to the North End and the Wharf District, and then to South Boston’s Fort Point Neighborhood Association, the South Boston Waterfront Neighborhood Association (Seaport), and the South Boston City Point Neighborhood Association.

On Wednesday evening, June 26, the “South Boston segment” of the NHA arranged an informational meeting of the HNA for all interested parties in the Boston Society of Architect’s “Space” on Congress Street. South Bostonians there included Joanne McDevitt, Sheila Greene, Joe

Rogers, and Sara McCammond (the writer apologizes if he missed anyone from here). About a hundred showed up to hear a panel discussion of waterfront development in our South Boston neighborhood.

The four panelists were the Deanne Morgan (Environmental Planning) and Heather Miller (Staff Attorney) from the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF), Ben Lynch (Waterways Program Chief, MASS DEP), and Jill Valdez Horwood (Waterfront Policy, Boston Harbor Now). For your information, Horwood will soon join the Barr Foundation as its Director of the Boston Waterfront Initiative. Opening remarks and introductions were delivered by Sara McCammond and Joe Rogers, respectively. They both expressed their support of Chapter 91 as a protector/codifier of public rights.

Perhaps the two most important points that were stressed by all the panelists were: First, don’t ever lose sight of the fact that the sea and its shores are yours by longstanding public right. Second, take part! Your opinion is not just valued, it is absolutely essential for setting public policy. The title of the presentation by Moran and Miller was “Your Rights, Your Actions”. Lynch strongly emphasized public involvement in what he evocatively called “A Harborside Chat” (Shades of FDR!).

Horwood ended the formal program with a brief, punchy talk entitled “Exploring Your Chapter 91 Spaces”.

A Q & A and public input session followed, which closed out the evening’s program. As a final editorial comment from South Boston Online, please remember that 82% of South Boston’s borders are salt water shores. Get involved with the concerns of the Harborfront Neighborhood Alliance (NHA).

(NOTE: The Conservation Law Foundation – the CLF – has published a booklet called “People’s Guide to the Public Waterfront Act (Chapter 91)”. It’s short (28 pages), wellwritten, and published recently – December, 2018). Get yourself a copy.

Sox-Yankees in London. And at The Lawn on D.

I

n a way, Saturday afternoon was a “good news/bad news” event. The good news was the broadcast (in South Boston) of the first Major League Baseball game ever played in London, or for that matter, anywhere else but North America.

The game, between those perennial rivals - the Red Sox and the Yankees - was broadcast at The Lawn on D, adjacent to the Convention Center.

This was the “good news”. The Lawn on D has become known as South Boston’s playground for all ages.

It was a great idea for them to present an athletic event that had been publicized worldwide, and which featured a sport that is uniquely American: baseball, in other words. And what a marvelous way to spend an afternoon locally – viewing a world-class event, while the kids played on the swings, and adults played games ranging from ping pong to the inelegantly entitled cornhole.

The weather smiled, the crowd sat around outdoor tables, and a steady stream of refreshments was supplied by the food trucks and inside the tent.

In their media advisories, The Lawn on D called their Saturday broadcast the “MLB :London Series Red Sox Official Watch Party”. Let’s hope that The Lawn on D continues these broadcasts until they become a custom. Despite the “unusual” brand of baseball played by both the Yanks and the Sox, it was a great way to spend a summer afternoon.

The two Sox-Yankees games were played in London Stadium, which is basically a soccer field. As such, it’s ovalshaped. We understand that something over six weeks was spent in converting the Stadium into a baseball diamond.

outfields were rather short: 330 feet in the left and right fields; 385 (with a low wall) in Center. The Stadium’s seating area is huge, and holds some 60,000 fans, more than half again as much as Fenway Park. Managers Alex Cora and Aaron Boone expressed their enthusiasm for bringing Major League Baseball overseas.

Perhaps unfortunately, both the Yankees and the Red Sox joined together in playing a highly unusual game on Saturday. That was the “bad news”. Starting pitchers Rick Porcello and Masahiro Tanaka did not make it through their respective first innings; the “score (?)” was tied at 6-6 at the end of the first. The relief pitching was almost as bad, with London Game One

ending after five hours with the Yankees winning 17-13 (30 runs overall). There was total of 37 hits and 0 (!) errors.

But the London fans loved it all, even singing “Sweet Caroline” during the seventh inning “stretch”. Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were among the fans.

Sunday’s game wasn’t much better, with the Sox losing to the Yankees 12-8 after leading New York 4-2 early on. That was a total of 50 runs in just two nine-inning games! The writer has been told by U.K. residents, “I say, old chap, cricket isn’t baseball, you know.” Well, what they saw the Sox and Yanks play last Saturday and Sunday wasn’t really baseball, either.

Enough said. South Boston Online thinks that the “MLB Official Watch Party” was a really enjoyable event – a great way to spend a summer afternoon on South Boston’s Playground.

Red Sox Wally was there; the Sox also brought their Showcase van. Perhaps The Lawn on D can repeat this success by broadcasting an evening game in July or August. If they do, bring your kids, let them stay up late, have supper at the food trucks or in the Lawn’s tent, and enjoy a marvelous evening watching baseball on The Lawn on D’s big screen.

Councilor Flynn & Councilor Flaherty FY20 City Budget Update for South Boston With the City budget expected to pass at this week’s City Council meeting, Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn and Boston City Councilor At-Large Michael Flaherty are providing an update on the FY20 city budget on projects and investments that will impact South Boston. Over the past several months, the City Council and Mayor Walsh’s Administration have worked on crafting a budget that will allow the city to provide quality city services to our residents, as well as making significant investments that will enhance our streets, parks, environment, and overall quality of life. In South Boston, the budget will allow for investment in major community spaces and parks such as the Curley Community Center (L St Bathhouse), Moakley Park, Medal of Honor Park, Flaherty Park, Orton Field, and the South Boston Branch Library, as well as climate resiliency measures and public works projects in Fort Point.

The Southie ‘Lighthouse’ Story

T

hese pa inted ‘Lighthouse’ panels will be on display on East Broadway through the summer months then moved to another South Boston location in the fall.

The painted ‘Lighthouse panels was an idea developed by the South Boston Arts Association and the South Boston Community Health Center as a youth program starting in 2006. The art-on-the-sidewalks display made an immediate hit with local residents and passersby … as well as with participating artists.

As the youth program grew other groups … such as the Neighborhood House, Artists for Humanity, Medicine Wheel, etc. (as well as unaligned independent

artists, young and old) … became caught up in the concept and asked for inclusion, and painted their own panels to present a great, giant eclectic work of art.

The original Lighthouse program flourished and eventually produced 150 panels. However, due to weather and storage problems during the winter months, the initial set of panels were eventually destroyed.

Through the efforts of Congress Stephen Lynch’s office … members of the Carpenters Union, Local 327, signed onto the project early in the planning … and have handled weather-coating and securing the panels to the street light poles. Many thanks to the efforts of the Carpenter’s Union Business Representatives Mark Dellascio, Rile Rhodes and Mike Davey for their work and patience.

Other officials, agencies, groups and individuals have been an integral part of this project since its inception. The Mayor’s office, South Boston elected officials, Artists for Humanity, the Neighborhood House, Gavin Foundation, Cushing House, L Street Bath House, the Tynan School ... just to name a few.

The Neighborhood House has partnered with the Arts Association

to produce this new arts segment.

A reception, saluting the new phase will be held at the Neighborhood House on Thursday, August 8 … at 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Painters of the lighthouses are encouraged to attend.

JULY 01 at M Street Beach Despite tides, storms, stiff winds, and squeaky clean water, our local beaches need an occasional clean-up. That’s true at one of our most popular shorelines – M Street Beach. To greet the first day of July, as well as the onset of really summery weather, a clean-up of M was organized by Bethany Rioux from The Broadway on East Broadway, near L. She is an event planner for the Broadway Hospitality Group, and works there, too.

Bethany and ten of the stalwart Broadway clientele gathered at M Street Beach on Monday, July 1, at 6 p.m., with rakes and trash bags in hand. Notice the olive-green T-shirts with “Trash 02127” the crew put on for the occasion. Logos from The Broadway and The Playwright are on the back of each one.

Cisco Brewery from Nantucket also supported the efforts.
