ere at South Boston Online, we are eagerly anticipating the upcoming Independence Day Holiday next Monday. Simply stated, the Fourth of July gives every American a reason to celebrate. And in fact, it’s going to be much more than a one-day celebration. Greater Boston’s Independence Day events begin at mid-day on Friday, July 1, come to a peak all day Saturday, the 2nd, end the day with spectacular fireworks over Boston Harbor on Saturday evening, provide non-stop entertainment at Downtown Crossing all Sunday afternoon, and then proceed for the entire day of July 4. We encourage you to attend as many of these joyful celebrations as you can. A key part of the overall Independence Day observances here in Boston is a four-day series of events called “Harborfest”, which is 40 years old this year. Over the years, Harborfest has become

Let’s Celebrate! America’s biggest Independence Day celebration. Experience as much of it as you can. And bring your children. We especially recommend one ceremony: At 9 a.m. on Monday the Fourth, a Parade will step off from City Hall. It’ll pass the Granary Burial Ground on Tremont Street where patriotic wreaths are to be laid, and then circle back to the Old State House. Boston’s Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company will read the Declaration of Independence from the balcony. Please note that the Declaration, as important as it is, takes only ten minutes (or less) to read completely, from its beginning, “When in the Course of human events …”, to its end, “… we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” The Declaration of Independence was first written by Thomas Jefferson on July 2, 1776; it was approved by the Second Continental Congress on July 4; it was then sent later in July to the 13 original colonies,

246 years ago. And it has inspired us every year – ever since then. There are many reasons for us to celebrate – Boston is a center of culture, history, museums, and colleges; it is an enjoyable “walking city”, with countless green spaces and ocean views; it’s a center for professional sports, excellent dining, and varied entertainment. Just don’t ever forget that we Americans are citizens of the oldest

free nation in the whole world. The weekend and the Fourth of July itself will be climaxed with an evening of stirring music from the world-famous Boston Pops Orchestra and its guests, led by Keith Lockhart and continuing the tradition established by Arthur Fiedler. Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” will close out the Pops concert, marked by ringing the church bells of Boston. A fireworks spectacular then will follow.
