Independence Day, 2021: Enjoy, Observe, Celebrate

e are now six days into the eight-day prelude leading up to the Fourth of July, the American Independence Day, 2021.

T h i s c om i n g Su nd ay, the 4th, the United States of America will arrive at its 245th Birthday. So enjoy it, observe it, and celebrate it, especially now that the COVID-19 pandemic finally seems to have taken a turn for the better. Here at South Boston Online, we’d like to wish you a healthful, mea ning f u l, a nd delightf u l Independence Day weekend – “Happy Fourth!” from us.

Last Saturday, Boston began “Independence Week ” wit h the 40th Harborfest, a day-

long “Hello Harbor” festival on Long Wharf. Holiday events continued with a Kickoff today, when Boston’s Mayor Kim Janey gave her welcoming speech on “The Steps” in Downtown Crossing at 11:30 this morning.

The pace picks up even more on Saturday, July 3. “The Steps” will be filled once again with entertainment of all kinds from noon until 8 p.m. In addition, a Classic Car Showcase has been arranged on Summer Street, 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. From 2 p.m. until 4, the annual harbor boat parade – “Float Your Boat” – will grace the shores of Boston Harbor.

A nd hang the foul weather predictions! To us, the single most meaningful obser vance over the Fourth of July is this trad itiona l read ing of t he Declaration of Independence.

And it takes only ten minutes.

The “shot heard ‘round the world ” by Emerson cou ld truthf ully have mea nt that Declaration. It was first read aloud to the people of Boston on Thursday, July 18, 1776, after a handwritten copy arrived here by horseback from Philadelphia.

First, on July 4 morning, watch the f lag-raising at City Hall at 9 a.m. and the Parade to the Old Granary Burial Ground immediately after ward. The Parade ends up at the Old State House around 10:15, and then the reading is conducted. See you there.

That afternoon, the USS Constitution makes a turn-around cruise between 10:45 a.m. and 2 p.m. (approx.), out of and back into the Inner Harbor, punctuated by a 21-gun sa lute at Fort Independence to ou r “ne w- old ” nat ion.

Tune in to the Boston Pops Fourth of July Concert on Sunday evening at 8 p.m.

This year, it will be broadcast from Tanglewood, so we aren’t sure of the best way to watch its star-studded performance.

The Concert will be followed by a f ireworks extravaganza on the Boston Common (from 10:30 to 11, approx.). Check the best ways to view both of these for yourself, your own family, and your friends.

2020-2021 Evacuation Day Banquet Announced 9/17/21 at the BCEC “Half- Way to Evacuation Day” Like everyone else, we here at the South Boston Citizens’ Association are happy that things are finally returning to what will be a new normal after well over a year of a pandemic that has so deeply impacted all our lives.

Our hearts go out to those who suffered with corona virus, as well as to everyone who cared for others who were ill. And we pray for those who did not make it through this sad and frightening period in our shared history.

Now that the number of those who have been vaccinated continues to climb, and most social restrictions have been lifted, we can all look forward to cautiously returning to enjoying ourselves and each other’s company in ways not possible since very early in 2020.

And for us at the SBCA, that means being able to pick up where we left off in terms of our longstanding tradition of annually commemorating the momentous events of March 17, 1776, and what they meant for Boston and for our country’s successful efforts to achieve independence from the British Empire.

Association President Tom McGrath announced “A fitting return of our events will commence this September, when we will hold a special combined 2020 and 2021 Evacuation Day Banquet. The banquet will once again be hosted by our good friends at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center on September 17th, 2021”.

The 2020 award recipients to be recognized on this special night are Cheryl Itri, John McCormack Award for Public Service, Sean O’Brien, John “Joe” Moakley Award, Outstanding Citizen, Thomas E. Smith, John “Doc” Tynan Profile in Courage Award and Bobby McGarrell the Jimmy Kelly / Peggy Flaherty Shamrock Award .

“It gives me great pleasure to announce these awards once again, it would have been a shame for these individuals to not be recognized,” said McGrath. “These are truly dedicated and committed individuals who have contributed so much in their own unique ways. It is fitting for the Citizens’ Association, and the South Boston community, to honor these individuals on September 17th. ”McGrath also stated.

The awards will be presented at the Association’s 140th and 141st Annual Evacuation Day Banquet, to be held Friday evening, September 17th, at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, with a 5:30PM Cocktail hour and a Corned Beef Dinner served at 7:00PM. A host of special invited Dignitaries are expected to attend this year’s banquet. Curragh’s Fancy will provide the entertainment. McGrath stated that limited tickets are available and can be purchased as tables were previously purchased in 2020.

Anti-Marijuana Rally on First Street

A

rally by a large group of South Boston residents living along East First Street, between its intersections with I and L Streets, took place on Monday at 5 p.m.

The rally’s purpose was to demonstrate continued opposition to the renovation of an existing building and opening of a recreational marijuana dispensary – a large pot shop with 10 check-out counters and 37 parking spaces – at 115 K Street, fronting on East First Street at #530. More than 50 concerned residents attended, along with District 2 City Councilor Ed Flynn and State Representative David Biele. The office of City Councilor-at-L a rge Michael Flaherty was also represneted.

A lmost all of those in attendance were strenuously opposed to the proposed recreational marijuana dispensary.

This outlet would border the

substation located next to the newly opened Eversource Park and the newest section of Boston’s H a r b or w a l k .

Sp e c i f ic a l l y, Councilor Flynn spoke of his concerns for the residents as the major reason for his opposition.

He also mentioned the traffic problems that would be generated along First Street by a major retail operation, such as the proposed MJ dispensary and its parking lot. State Rep. Biele confirmed his own opposition to the outlet as well. Questions and comments by the attendees (mostly negative) followed.

Interestingly, the residents at the rally posted many reasons for disapproving the marijuana outlet along the Eversource Park fence.

We’ll summarize these below: Some 260 residents in or near the neighborhood are opposed to the MJ dispensary, in part due to its high volume – 10 cash registers, 37 parking spaces. By far, it’ll be the largest retail operation in that area. It will create hazards

for bicyclists and pedestrians; it will negatively affect the nearby quality of life seven days a week!

Article 68, which was put in effect more than a decade back, protects this particular neighborhood and the “quiet enjoyment” of its residents – the opening of any sizable retail enterprises here is not “as of right”. And there’s the

possibility the MJ outlet, as large as it is, will attract even more major traffic increases from the Airport, from South Station, and from commuters passing by – First Street has become very much of a throughway in recent years.

Senator Collins Secures Funding for South Boston Street Festival Recently, State Senator Nick Collins joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts State Senate in unanimously passing a $47.7 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22).

During the debate, Senator Collins championed an amendment to fund $25,000 to the South Boston Street Festival. For more than 20 years, the South Boston Street Festival has been working to bridge new connections and strengthen existing relationships between local businesses, lifelong residents, and the many new neighbors moving into the South Boston community. The premier event provides support to local small business and celebrates the South Boston community.

“As Chair of the Joint Committee on Community Development and Small Businesses, this is an event that I was proud to support,” said Senator Collins. “As we emerge from the pandemic, this festival is an incredible opportunity to bring the community together and benefit economic development.”

Councilors Flynn & Flaherty to Host Community Preservation Act Neighborhood Meeting

ity Councilor Ed Flynn and Cit y Councilor Michael Flaherty are partnering with the Office of Community Preservation to host an information session for District 2 residents on the Community Preservation Act (CPA) on Wednesday, July 7th, 6pm via Zoom. This meeting aims to provide information and resources for residents and organizations in South Boston who may want to apply for funding from the CPA, and will discuss the funding application process, the timeline, eligible projects, and other related information.

The CPA provides funding for initiatives related to affordable housing, historic preservation, open space, and outdoor recreation facilities. Martin’s Park and the McDonough Sailing Center are

two examples of projects that are funded by the CPA. To be considered for CPA’s 2022 funding round, interested applicants need to fill out the CPA’s rolling eligibility form by August 20, 2021 at 5pm. Recognizing the opportunities that CPA presents for residents and organizations who want to preserve and improve our neighborhoods, Councilors Flynn and Flaherty are hosting this meeting to allow residents and organizations to learn more about how they can utilize CPA funding to enhance our community.

Safety Meeting: N and East Broadway

M

uch of what South Boston Online reports here is what we have heard; some of it we have seen. We are providing this update on a Safety Meeting called by Ed Flynn for informational purposes only.

South Boston’s traffic problems, escalating as they’ve been doing – to dangerous levels of potential injury and even death – struck again on N Street on Saturday, June 19. According to police reports, a pedestrian was struck by a car at N and Fourth Streets. Later on that same day, a man named Elvis Marte, who was riding his motorbike eastbound on East Broadway, was struck and killed by a private automobile coming up N Street from the south and entering East Broadway.

In response to the outrage about yet another death in this general neighborhood, District 2 City Councilor Ed Flynn arranged an outdoor meeting to be convened last Thursday afternoon at the intersection of N and East Broadway. The meeting formed up at the entrance to Medal of Honor Park, where

A demonstration by around 50 family members and friends of the victim, Elvis Marte, formed on the corner diagonally across the intersection. As Councilor Flynn’s meeting progressed, Marte’s family and friends joined it.

Jessica Pena, their children’s mother, spoke sorrowfully but eloquently about Marte’s death, promising that she would keep a vigil every day, until the truth about this fatal accident was uncovered.

Those at the meeting who were from South Boston generally acknowledged that traffic violations in

the City Point area, from Day Boulevard to East Broadway, and all along the through streets from L to Farragut Road, went completely out of control a long time ago (years!). The chief reason for this, according to those who spoke up, was a lack of traffic enforcement and not enough police. Other reasons, such as poor visibility at corners and the need for more four-way STOP streets, were also brought up. Yvette McGrath spoke early on, especially listing specific steps and safety studies that need to be undertaken immediately.

Apparently, some of the crowd weren’t aware that a police investigation was proceeding, including an investigation by the Homicide Unit because a fatality was involved. Sgt. Steve McNeil, the Community Service Supervisor at BPD Station C-6, assured everyone that the incident was still actively “under investigation”, and would be pursued to the end. Amy Cording,

the Director of Engineering at the BTD (Boston Traffic Department) said that the BTD is considering several possible steps – traffic posts, better lines, perhaps even a speed bump for a while. However, the intersection’s camera appears to be out of order – a lack of maintenance?

South Boston Online won’t offer any opinions here, except to state as firmly as possible that we need more traffic police coverage to enforce the rules during commuting hours on the “cut-through” streets, and on the streets used by beachgoers over weekends. The goal is (much) more enforcement, as politically incorrect as that might seem these days, because STOP signs are being completely ignored. Councilor Flynn mentioned that he believes we should recruit 200 more officers every year, to replace the hundred or so who leave annually, and to bring the Department back up to strength.

Carpenters Unions Endorse Erin Murphy for City Council At-Large

sprawling coalition of carpenters unions has endorsed Erin Murphy to serve as an at-large Boston city councilor, citing Erin’s commitment to growing the middle class by creating and preserving good, wellpaying jobs in every neighborhood.

The North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters g ave it s of f icia l back ing to Erin’s campaign as it develops tremendous moment u m a few short mont hs before t he September preliminar y election.

“Erin shares our values,” said Mynor Perez, Regional Manager for the Carpenter Union Specialty Trades at t he Ne w Eng la nd Regional Council of Carpenters.

Barbara Caputo Kelly Recognized as Commonwealth Heroine

R

ecently, South Boston re sident Ba rba ra Caputo Kelly was recognized as a Commonwealth Heroine by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women at a virtual ceremony held at the Massachusetts State House.

The Commonwealth Heroine Award is given to women who don’t make the news, but make a difference and use their time, talent, and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of others and make a difference in their neighborhoods, cities and towns. They are mentors, volunteers and innovators who do what needs to be done without expectations of recognition or gratitude. These women are the glue that keeps a community together and every community is better because of their contributions.

State Representative David Biele nominated Barbara for her dedication to improving the quality of life for South Boston residents, children, and families through her work with the Boston Centers

for Youth and Families (BCYF) Curley Community Center and the Condon Community Center.

During the pandemic, Barbara helped deliver important resources and PPE to seniors and families in need while also helping to coordinate the access and availability to breakfast and lunch on a daily basis to children, and families. In addition to her work with BCYF, Barbara has been instrumental in organizing coat drives and toy drives, as well as the distribution of Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, to support children and families across South Boston.

“Barbara always goes above and beyond to help neighbors and families across our community, and her efforts have made South Boston a better place to live,” said Rep. Biele.

“I am thankful her tremendous service to our neighborhood, and I was proud to nominate Barbara and recognize the great work she does each and ever day.”

The William J. Miller Memorial Park:A Friendly Reminder

his is just a quick, friendly reminder about one of South Boston’s smaller (and newer) treasures. Three years ago, the William Miller Memorial Park was dedicated in honor of William J. Miller, also known affectionately by his nicknames of “Hank ” and “Skippy” (how many people do you know who had two nicknames?). Miller Park is located on the southern bank of the Port of Boston’s Reser ved Cha nnel, just of f the east side of Summer Street as it heads across the bridge toward the Seaport District.

Hank Miller passed from us four years ago at the age of 85. The words on the Miller Park plaque, in addition to the

The Cranes: Five Things You Should Know

he arrival of the three new cranes at Conley Terminal was a true news event. Just the sight of them, as tugs guided their barge into the Reserved Channel, was more spectacular than any recent news event around here. Yes, even more spectacular than the Red Sox’ second three-game sweep of the Yankees! But the cranes are berthed here now. Watch for their start-up in the late fall, before 2021 ends.

First, as one of those things “You Should K now”, please recognize that shipping goods by large, ocean-going container ships is actually energy efficient.

Once a container ship is up to speed, it burns substantially less fuel to simply keep itself at that same speed.

And it appears that ocean-going fuel efficiency is even better in the larger container ships, so the Conley Terminal is doing its part to reduce global warming.

Sec ond, we ment ioned “large container ships”, but at Conley, just how large is “large”?

The Conley Terminal can now handle container ships holding 5,000 TEU (TEU means “20foot Equivalent Units”). With the new cranes, Conley can handle neo-Panamax container sh ips hold i ng more t ha n 10,000 TEUs –over twice as much as their current capacity.

Third, visualize the size of the larger 10,000+ TEU container ships. The freight from these huge ships will f ill 5,000 18-wheeler trucks.

That number of 18-wheelers, if they were lined up bumperto -bu mper, wou ld be 50 miles long (!!!) Now visualize that line of trucks – loaded from only one neo-Panama x container shipload – on the Mass. Turnpike: It would stretch along the Pike from Rte. 93/128 in Newton all the way west to Sturbridge. From just one modern-day neo-Panamax

A New Neighborhood Sprout

There’s a new sign near L and East Broadway – over the windows and entrance into 47 L, to be exact. It belongs to a new enterprise their owners call “Sprout”, which will open in the near future. This sign is in cursive, and it features a capital letter at its beginning that would make an eye-catching monogram. Sprout will see to your daily grocery needs with healthy, organic bread, grains, produce, and dairy products. Sprout will also purvey a wide range of oil, cheese, vinegar, and preservatives. According to their website, they’ll have “grab ‘n’ go” offerings as well.
