Senator Collins Opposes Bus Service Proposal Plan would Short-Circuit Number 7 and Number 11 Bus Service in South Boston

S

tate Senator Nick Collins testified in opposition to the MBTA’s proposed bus route changes as part of the Authority’s Better Bus Project. In particular, the Senator took issue with proposed changes the Number 7 and Number 11 buses, which would see dramatic route changes under the existing plans. Senator Collins was joined by Representative David Biele in signing a letter of opposition that was submitted to the MBTA last week.

“The proposed changes are, frankly, absurd,” said Senator Collins.

“I cannot support this proposal until those route changes are scrapped.”

The proposed changes to the Number 11 bus would see the route end at Broadway Station, with the bus no longer continuing downtown via Tufts Medical Center. Commuters and those seeking the hospital’s

services would instead have to transfer to the Red Line and Orange Line to complete the trip, raising concerns regarding the abilities of those with physical disabilities to access healthcare.

The Number 7 bus would continue its traditional route on Summer Street, passing by the Flynn Cruiseport, the Conley Terminal, and the Port of Boston, crossing the heavily trafficked Haul Road, before continuing past South Station, all the way through to North Station and Charlestown, doubling the current route before a return trip to South Boston. Many South Boston residents rely on the Number 7 bus for transportation to work downtown, with calls from residents to increase current Number 7 bus service.

The MBTA is currently accepting feedback from community members regarding the proposed route changes.

This year’s Kickoff for Kids women’s flag football tournament will be held Saturday, June 25, at the Pop Warner Field next to the Murphy Rink.

There are 10 teams in the 30+ division (also known as the Moms’ division) and eight teams in the younger division.

n behalf of the Andrew Square Civic Association, we want to first highlight our gratitude to the MBTA for a such an accessible public transportation system here in Andrew Square. Thank you for all the hard work behind the scenes to offer folks great options to travel around Boston with ease.

For all the things that go right every day on the T, we are thankful.

With that said, we would like to raise some pressing concerns and ask for your support in providing definitive feedback, plans for resolution, and a commitment to accountability for a more secure public transportation experience at the Andrew Station T and throughout Boston.

As you know, crime has become a rampant problem in and around the T and especially here in Andrew Square. This has ranged from youth antics, such as gaining control of communication systems at Andrew Station and yelling obscenities, to armed robbery, random acts of violence and assault, and widespread illegal drug use. This has all occurred within the

Andrew Sqare Civic Association past few months and captures a narrow snapshot of the everyday reality here.

The Andrew Station T is extremely unsafe and is being observed/ perceived as such by our community.

Describing the Andrew Station T as a “no-go zone,” especially during certain times of day, is an accurate representation of public sentiment here.

Many people in our neighborhood have simply stopped using the T. This is especially concerning considering the PLAN: South Boston Dorchester Avenue Planning Initiative, which presumes heavy if not exclusive use of the T. As you know, developments along this corridor benefit from specialized BPDA code requirements significantly decreasing or eliminating parking within/around structures. With giant developments in progress or on the horizon within walking distance to the Andrew Station T, we can expect a significantly larger volume of public transportation riders in this area. The fact that the Andrew Station T is so unsafe undermines all assumptions for transportation in the plan. This cannot be tolerated.

Flag Retirement Ceremony June 14th On Flag Day, June 14th, 2022 at Fort Independence Castle Island South Boston, the Scottish American Military Society will conduct a Flag Retirement Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. in accordance with the U.S. Flag code. If you or anyone has any U.S. Flags that are no longer fit for public display, worn, torn, or faded, one may drop them off at the Fire Stations on “D” Street or East 4th Street. You may also bring flags on the day of the Ceremony.

To begin the dialogue, we would like a response to the following: What cameras/call buttons/ opportunities to contact the police and MBTA personnel are available at the Andrew Station T? Are ALL of the abovementioned communication/security devices in operating order? Please confirm yes or no, and if no, please provide the location of all non-operational devices along with a plan and date for resolution.

Is someone at the MBTA actively monitoring camera content at all times the T is in operation?

When can we expect MBTA Police Officers to be on site at the Andrew Station T? Could you submit a schedule and number of units/ officers?

Where will MBTA Police Officers be posted? Will any officers be patrolling the platform?

There is a crowd control issue with rowdy passengers taking the bus and train during certain hours, can the MBTA respond with a plan for providing a safe, accessible, and clear path for all riders to enter Andrew Station?

Lastly, how do you plan to improve upon the enforcement of the law in and around the T? What type of crimes would trigger an arrest?

Thank you for your priority and attention to these matters.

We would like to emphasize our support and partnership in resolving these issues with you.

Timothy “Doc” Cook Scholarship Foundation Awards

ach year for the last eight years, Annual Awards have been made to worthy young people by the Timothy “Doc” Cook Scholarship Foundation. Since last year, fourteen special young people have risen to the challenge of writing truly meaningful essays and stories about PTS and PTSD (respectively, Post Traumatic Stress and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) – especially among veterans who have endured the immense stresses of combat. A top-notch essay has qualified each of these young people to receive a Scholarship Award.

This article deals with the Award ceremony held on last Sunday, June 5, by the Cook Foundation.

With its emphasis on the PTSD suffered by veterans, it is fitting that the Annual Awards be held in appropriate places. In recent years, the Awards have been conferred at the Korean War Memorial on Castle Island and the Evacuation Day Monument on Dorchester Heights. This year, District Hall, within the shadow of the Fallen Heroes Obelisk, hosted the Awards event. Around 50 guests took part. And not so incidentally, June is PTSD month as well.

Tim “Doc” Cook got his nickname because he joined the U.S. Navy and became a Medical Corpsman. He was promoted to Petty Officer and volunteered to go to

Award winners, elected officials, and Timothy “Doc” Cook Foundation volunteers.

Iraq and serve with the U.S. Marine Corps. In part because of his sorrow over a Marine losing his life in another unit, Tim and a Sgt. McLaughlin assembled a vehicle capable of carrying many wounded Marines back to their base and medical care all at once. This vehicle soon became an integral part of every Marine convoy. When Tim “Doc” Cook mustered out, things seemed all right, but they weren’t – Tim did not survive the immensely powerful roller coaster of PTS coupled with dual diagnoses. R.I.P. Tim: Sept. 7, 1984 – Mar. 2, 2013.

Joe Cook, Tim’s father, decided to commemorate his son’s memory with the Foundation described above, which is devoted to educating local youth and increasing awareness of PTS/ PTSD. The generosity of many friends and organizations has resulted in the distribution of more than $80,000 to local boys and girls. Joe also serves as the emcee at the Awards ceremonies

each year. He assembles a speech, along with brief bios of each Award-winning young person. And they are good – they make for inspiring listening as the Awards ceremonies proceed. After saying that “a little kindness goes a long way”, Joe shared the podium, too. Kurt Power then spoke of his devotion to the military services. City Councilor Ed Flynn addressed his thanks to the Cook family on behalf of South Boston.

Rep. David Biele expressed his support for veterans and congratulated the 2022 Award recipients. Dan Magoon, the Executive Director of the Fallen Heroes Memorial, said his own safe return obliged him to devote himself to work on behalf of all veterans.

At that point, Joe Cook gave out the Scholarship Awards to the real heroes of the Awards ceremony, the 14 young people who wrote such worthwhile essays. It was the high point of the event.

I

m a g i ne being an Intensive Care Nurse at Boston Med ic a l Center, a place you have worked and loved for thirty-eight years and have seen some of the most complex cases in medicine.

Then imagine being there when COVID-19 was at its terrifying height, and the practices changed overnight as droves of critically ill patients were admitted to newly created units. Imagine then that you are as devoted a nurse as the field knows, and in the aftermath, your own mother dies from another illness, unleashing your own family grief and tensions. This is just a snapshot of the life of Boston Medical Center’s Jeannie Hanlon, but there is so much more to know.

“I knew from the time I was four years old that I wanted to be a nurse, and never wavered.

Not an actress or a waitress, a nurse,” she said with a passion that immediately would make anyone want her by their hospital bedside. She graduated from Boston College with a degree in nursing and began at what was then Boston City Hospital where she made eight dollars an hour and had rent that was

three hundred per month.

“I love BMC and it has been my entire career. You either like it or you don’t, and I knew right away,” she said. “I thought about being a nurse practitioner along the way, but I met the love of my life, Bill, and we had three kids.

Not only that, but I just love the direct work with patients and their families,” she said.

Even amid memories of the hardship of losing patients and becoming over whelmed with understandable grief and exhaustion, she takes a breadth and says, “I’m so lucky.” This prevailing attitude about her life and work is a rare life force, and one put to the test during the COV ID crisis.

“It cha nged ever y thing tremendously,” she said about a place she could manage blindfolded previously. “We didn’t know what hit, and it exploded. Death is not new to us, but the numbers were shocking even to us,” she said.

“We didn’t know what was contagious, the units had to change to accommodate the need, and we had to wear extraordinary protective gear, and I was thankful for that, but we couldn’t just run into a room the way we had.”

She cared for any number of South Boston patients who were critically ill and spent precious time in the most heartbreaking a nd inspiring way s w it h families. She provided phone contact with families hoping their loved one could hear, and facetime for those who couldn’t come, and offered options in the most isolating of times.

Most of us have a litany of complaints about some system’s handling of this tsunami of illness and panic, but not Jeannie Hanlon, and it not because

she doesn’t know systems, or is naïve about people. Quite the opposite, she has worked in most tough specialty units and with numerous administrations, and challenges too many to recount.

“They said please, please , please work , and I did and not for the money. Our managers were phenomenal. We were supported each step of the way.

The Chief Nursing Off icer knows who we are by name and that feels good. She did daily updates for us, and they were not from her house,” she said. An all-hands-on deck attitude, good communication and a dedicated work force were the pivota l qualities that allowed Boston Medical Center to successfully persist, according to someone who has earned the right to say so. “It was so stressful, but I couldn’t let COVID also take the job I loved,” she said. She worked various and long shifts traveling the familiar route, often with Bill, and even dropping off others who needed rides.

Over these surreal years, she was dealing with the loss of the kind of nurse she had been, one with a personal connection and sensitive approach to each family and patient. She was witness to families wanting final moments with their loved ones dying alone, and that would take a toll on anyone who cares as this nurse does. In addition to her own

family issues, she felt a level of stress and knew she, the helper, needed help. Of course, this is a sign of a committed healthcare professional, and one determined to get beyond the cascading stress she began to experience.

She decided to take a twelve week break in January 2022, and process some of the intense reactions she had to a profoundly difficult time. Jeannie Hanlon was in her own way, another brave survivor of the COVID times. She doesn’t deny a level of upset she had not known previously, but she returned refreshed to her remarkable hospit a l i n A pr i l 2022 .

“I feel great, “she said. I have this amazing husband, a boss who is one hundred percent supportive, three wonderful kids and a great group of friends.” She looks forward to doing what she does best, caring for patients while now also keeping an eye on her own self-care. She thinks about the students and newer nurses, and all she has learned and continues to learn. “I love teaching, especially about how you talk to patients and families. Saying “we are so sorry,” and not creating distance when people are suffering and afraid can be so helpful. You see, it’s about the whole patient, and it doesn’t matter who they are,” said Jeannie Hanlon who has lived to this philosophy and is back doing her exceptional life’s work.

There were activities galore for the kids: Knucklebones play equipment, Touch a Truck, caricature artist,

balloon twisting, face painting, Minni Art Workshop, crafts, and giveaways.

The Sausage Guy, Cannonball Café, and the BPD Hoodsie truck were on hand offering snacks and food.

Registration is closed but fans are encouraged to stop by the tournament between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and support the teams and the cause.

Allison started Kickoff for Kids in 2017 after taking a job at the Tierney Center and seeing what Christmas was like for the kids there. “The letters to Santa listed things like socks, fruit snacks, toys. It wasn’t a typical list I was used to seeing and I wanted to do more for them.

“I asked my friends to donate and I got some stuff for the kids, but I felt as though it wasn’t enough.”

So she brainstormed on how she could help and the lifelong athlete turned to a sports tournament, inspired by the Thanksgiving football games she and her friends played against their moms.

Since the inception of the nonprofit organization, Allison, 28, has been able to raise – and give back – $130,000 to the community from five flag football tournaments, four Christmas giveaways, and 15 community events.

Every donation the organization makes is in memory of Colin McGrath.

“I look at who truly needs it the most,” Allison said. “I hit everybody, but certain people get more.”

Recipients include all the community centers, Gatey CYO, the South Boston Neighborhood House, the Boys & Girls Club, and Colin’s Joy Project, among many others.

From donating clothes and Christmas gifts to kids in need, to paying for school field trips, to helping local restaurants during the COVID shutdown through gift card fundraisers, Allison’s goal is to give back.

“That’s what I love to do. The

money isn’t just sitting in an account,” she said. “It’s constantly being used for something … and it’s being utilized in every part of the community, obviously more so in other areas, but my goal is to do it for kids who need it.

“I can’t express how important it is to give back,” Allison added.

“Our motto is to pay it forward.”

Allison wants to make the tournament more known than it already is. “I’m not saying it’s going to be some multimillion-dollar nonprofit, but for being only a thing for five years, each year it gets bigger and bigger. I hope in the future it’s a big deal. I’m going to continue to make sure it is because I want it to become bigger; so this is just the beginning for me.”

Eventually she’d like to also provide scholarships to inner-city youth with the money her organization raises.

But Allison deflects much of the credit, preferring to give shout-outs to her board members, friends, and sponsors.

“I just want to acknowledge the people who have truly been there with me since I’ve started this,” Allison said.

“I would be absolutely nowhere without my cousin Jacqueline Beggan and our friends: Jaelyn Kenneally, Haley Dillon, and Lily Joyce.”

Ca roline Madden a nd Freddy Ahern have been Allison’s biggest supporters her entire life.

Ashley Coughlin, Barbara Kelly, and Joe Hassell are the brains behind all of the big decisions.

“Planning this event isn’t easy, but all of these people make it easy by showing up each year,” Allison said.

She recently found the missing piece: Victor Baldassari, who came up with Kickoff for Kids’ motto. “He taught me that when you pay it forward, it

always comes back. What he does for this community sometimes goes unnoticed.

He is a huge advocate for girls’/women’s sports and runs the only women’s basketball league in South Boston. He’s been my role model for a very long time and I’m happy to have him on my team.

Victor was instrumental in introducing Allison to Al Mallon, Domenic Baldassari, and John Piekutoski, who helped her make important connections within the South Boston community and beyond.

“There are so many more people who help make this day a success,” she said. “The list goes on and on. I love being a part of this community.”

Allison, a Perkins School paraprofessional and coach, is also grateful for all the sponsors.

It’s to the point where she doesn’t have to ask anymore for sponsorships.

Once word gets out about the tournament, her previous sponsors reach out to her. And this year, City of

Boston Credit Union joined the lineup.

When the tournament started five years ago, it was held in the fall, when the weather can be very cold. After a COVID hiatus, Allison ended up organizing two tournaments last year to make up for lost time. Everyone loved the June date over the fall date. “When I had it in June, everyone was like, ‘Oh my God, never go back to the cold.’ ” While Allison is not ruling out a fall flag football tournament, she knows she can hold other fundraising events instead, like a Halloween party, a cornhole tournament, etc. She has also teamed up with the City of Boston for events.

“At the end of the day it’s all about the kids and to be the person you needed when you were younger,” she said.

Look who's cooking!

F

i lomena L og ra s so, 75, of Sal’s Italian R istora nte and Pizzeria on L. St., looks back to her childhood in Abruzzi, Italy, and draws a quick connection to her lifelong skill and passion for cooking. She also looks ahead to a time when the third generation of her family with husband, Salvatore, continue the fine tradition. But, for now, she is in the kitchen most every day as she has been since 1986 when she and Sal turned a convenience store into t he re st au ra nt.

“I ca me from Ita ly in 1965 at age 17,” she said. “I never studied cooking in the sense of going to school, but I watched my mother. She was a good cook, and I remember her making sauce, homemade pasta, and rabbit. She would make cheeseballs on a Saturday, a nd I still do that here.”

She a lso remembers her father making wine at 2A M. Hard work as a way of life was not lost on the youngest of four, who went on to not only start the business with “Sal” but raised three children, including son, Carlo, who is key in the business now, and t wo daughters, a teacher and physical therapist.

Through it all she developed a philosophy and natural way of perfecting an age-old art.

“I put my love into food and cooking, and you have to do that to make it right,” she said. “I have common sense and also can put things together quickly.” Seeing her in action confirms this as she uses just the right fresh products, and a process learned those decades ago in Italy. “I don’t change the menu much,” she said. “The basic menu is good. I get here early and start the sauce, and we use 90 percent fresh products,” she said. “We don’t have much room to grow produce but we do use our own basil and parsley.”

Filomena recounts how they go about making their own chicken salad, and the joy of work ing with fresh broccoli and spinach with the full confidence of a chef who knows quality over fads and can accommodate one or crowds.

The past year, she took a break and went to Florida for several well -deserved months, but make no mistake, she knows what it takes to sustain the operation. “You are married to the business. You cannot leave it because it needs attention and love. You also have to be polite to all customers and it takes

A natural born leader and chef, she is conf ident in her experience a nd derives s a t i s f a c t i on f rom wh at she produc e s COVID-19 was a challenge to Sal’s as every other business and the configuration of tables cha nged, a nd t he popu la r takeout and delivery increased, but there were unusual periods when they had to close. There is also the continued challenge of getting and keeping the kind of employees they want.

Fortunately, Louisa LoStimolo, joined t he tea m when a neighboring business closed, and Filomena is clearly pleased to work with her. Through it all, she seems quite at home with the inevitable ebb and f low of a business and is focused more on fortune than misfortune in life and work.

Asked about Florida, she isn’t primarily propelled by golf or lounging about, but first said, “We have large parties there, I cooked for one hundred people!”

She has a natural joy in bringing people together wherever she may be, and most often it involves family, friends, and cooking.

W hy keep doing it when her son, Ca rlo, is a lready committed, and now possibly

one or more of her eig ht gra ndchildren may be ready to take the helm? “It is good t herapy,” she says, look ing around the familiar space, and rec a lling mot hers long a go dropping off children at school and coming in for coffee, or t wins who were toddlers and now adult men still coming in for favorites. “The honest truth is that I enjoy it,” she said.

Filomena Lograsso hesitated momenta rily when getting up from a familiar bench in the place she has worked and loved since 1986, and I thought that perhaps sta nding a nd making that sauce and other time-consuming recipes without shortcuts have been straining her back, but I was wrong.

“I was dancing too much, and my leg is sore. I love Latin music and don’t sit down. My husband says, do you remember how old you are,” she laughs at the question knowing full well that she will do what she loves without imposing an age limit.

She returns to the morning ritual with Sal, Carlo, her grandsons, Louisa, and the team at Sal’s who have rebounded from the current cha llenges and are cook ing with the same attention that began in Italy generations ago.

Amazon Comes to South Boston Seaport After a hectic week, last Sunday was calm at the 111 Harbor Way entrance to Amazon’s newly dedicated building, as seen across from “The Rocks at Harbor Way” (there’s an auxiliary entrance at 55 Boston Wharf Road). The 17 partially cantilevered floors designed by Gensler will provide 430,000 square feet of office space. Amazon has said they plan to bring 2,000 new employees into this space, and they are becoming increasingly pro-active in the Boston scene, which includes their partnership with UMass Boston to help students successfully prepare for technology jobs.

Cliff Diving Returns to South Boston

A

s high summer began in Boston nine years ago in 2013, the first (ever) local chapter of what is called “Cliff Diving” came to South Boston.

The event was held on the man-made urban cliff formed by the glass-sided Institute of Contemporary Art (the ICA). Divers plunged gracefully and athletically from the top of this “cliff” into a quiet, saltwater alcove off of Boston Harbor.

We are pleased to announce that Cliff Diving returned to South Boston last weekend – Saturday, June 4.

Welcoming arches around the ICA and spectator areas opened at Saturday noon and the crowds swelled as the afternoon proceeded.

An official count claimed more than 20,000 spectators; it seemed like an entire stadium (30,000 or more?) was there. From 2:30 to 3:00, female Cliff Divers competed in qualifiers, followed by male qualifiers from 3:00 to 3:30. The final competitive Cliff Diving, followed by brief award ceremonies, began at 3:30 and ended at 5:00 – an eventful afternoon that went by very quickly.

Both male and female Cliff Divers each fielded a group of 12 competitors – a total of 24 Divers. These groups were made up of eight “permanent athletes” and four “wild card Divers”, who qualify at each stop on the World Series of Cliff Diving. And Cliff

Diving is certainly an international, worldwide sport. Saturday’s female Divers came here from six nations; the male Divers were from seven nations. During 2022, Cliff Diving plans to hold a total of eight World Series of Cliff Diving events all around the globe. Why was Boston the first this year? Because “The World Series of Cliff Diving’s first landing in the sports-loving City of Boston in nine years marks a double first” – accessibility to thousands of fans, and the first appearance of women Cliff Divers here. Credit should be given to the ICA and the event sponsor, Red Bull, for putting on a superb spectator sports event.

Cliff Diving is an “extreme sport”. The men dive from a height of 90 feet; the women from 72 feet. The velocity the Divers reach as they enter the water is in excess of 50 miles per hour, and this is

after twisting and somersaulting as many as a half-dozen times on the way down. Their dives last for approximately three seconds. They enter the water feet-first and as vertically as possible to avoid a splash.

The force Cliff Divers experience is 10G (ten times the force of gravity).

Five judges, who were once Cliff Divers themselves, assign points to each dive based upon its “degree of difficulty” and how graceful and well executed each dive seems.

And all of Saturday’s dives were indeed very, very beautiful to watch.

Intense competition was part of Cliff Diving on Saturday. As examples, the reigning male World Champion for almost all of the last ten years has been Gary Hunt (France). He’s 37, and was challenged

by Adrian Heslop (England), who at 20 is very young for a top-notch Cliff Diver. Well, by the end of the day,

Heslop had aced out Hunt by a mere two points – 304 to 302. Among the women, veteran Divers Molly Carlson (Canada) and Rhianna Iffland (Australia) ended up in hard-fought First and Second at 269 points to 267, respectively. This is an opinion, but world-class Cliff Diving is perhaps the most individual of any sport – your competition either goes before you or follows you. This means that most of the time, a Cliff Diver is competing against himself or herself to constantly do better than ever! No matter how well anyone else is doing.

After Boston, Cliff Diving travels to Port Debilly (Paris), Copenhagen (Denmark), the Oslo Opera House (Norway), Mostar Bridge (Bosnia/Herzegovina), Lake Lucerne (Switzerland), Polignano a Mare (Italy), and Sydney (Australia) – a total of eight worldwide Cliff Diving World Series in 2022.

Running for Joy

The second annual Colin’s Joy Project 5K Saturday morning drew a ton of kids and runners on East Broadway. Before the 5K, kids 9 and under participated in the 100-yard dash and kids 14 and under tackled a half-mile. In addition to their #1 bibs, the kids wore huge smiles.

Brendan Good (age 34) won the 5K in 18:13, followed by Thomas White (19) in 19:02 and Richard Bagge (52) in 19:29. The mission of Colin’s Joy Project is to enhance play spaces and sponsor children and family programming in the community, particularly for families in need. Congratulations to all the runners! History Day, 2022 Tuesday, June 7, was National History Day (NHD) this year. NHD is a nationwide organization with affil-iates in all 50 states; it engages students and their teachers in historical learning. Locally, led by South Boston Historical Society President Bob Allison, several volunteers gathered on Dorchester Heights to speak about and recreate history. Students from many schools met Henry Knox, Phyllis Wheatley, sailors from the USS Constitution, an 1812 Marine named Venture Smith, and Israel Putnam (Putnam was a military officer and an engineer, who designed and built Revolutionary War fortifications). And Dorchester Heights was a fitting locale – its fortifications led to George Washington’s first victory in our War for Independence on Evacuation Day, March 17, 1776.
