Ca ll this event what you will, the Amazon Corporation and WS Development broke ground that day, for a new office complex in the center of South Boston’s

booming Seapor t District.

The nameplate address of the new complex is 111 Harbor Way, and it is located near the northeasterly corner of Boston Wharf Road and Congress Street.

The project is an important piece of construction for WS Development and their Seaport buildout, which is the largest real estate project in Boston’s history. The Amazon Project is planned for completion in 2021.

Even though the weather on Tuesday exhibited its wellknown Boston temperament, the groundbreaking was a joyful happening. A steel drum duo played upbeat, rhythmic music; Luke’s lobster rolls and Japanese ice cream made for a memorable lunch; and in a nice closing touch,

ast Wednesday evening, May 22, South Boston’s Condon Community Center was the site of an in-depth presentation of a newly conceived pilot program - “Condon Connects”. The Administrative Coordinator of the South Boston Center is Joseph Curran; the presentation at the Condon was arranged by Barbara Kelly, who is the Condon Community Center’s Program Supervisor, and Debra Flaherty, Condon Staff Assistant. This was the very first presentation of the pilot program, which has been deemed “Condon Connects”.

The individual who made the presentation was Boston Police Department (BPD) Officer Michelle Maffeo. She is a member of the BPD’s Bureau of Community Engagement in Charlestown, supervised by BPD Sergeant Gino Provenzano. The Boston Medical Center (BMC), Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services (DDS), and the Federation for Children with Special Needs graciously sent representatives to provide information and add to the narrative for parents and caregivers.

Officer Maffeo gave an energetic, enthusiastic, and well-informed presentation to those who attended the May 22 meeting at the Condon Community Center. One program she introduced was “North Star”. Maffeo explained that this program is for people who tend to wander off – one of the autistic behaviors certain children have, but this application can also be applied to older family members with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. It is entitled “North Star Personal Alert Program”, and offers a confidential personal enrollment feature (with a photo) that helps police act upon a report that someone is missing. North Star is a free program

The real objective of this pilot program is to establish the Condon Community Center as a “resource center” for families with disabilities, and to work collaboratively to develop adaptive programming that stresses fun and inclusion. Plans are being made right now for a Condon Community Center First Responders Safety and Fun Day, which will entertain children while showing them the importance of trusting first responders - representatives from the Boston Police, Boston Fire Department, and EMS will be in attendance. Watch for it sometime in July. Condon Program Supervisor Barbara Kelly says, “It is paramount that kids identify First Responders as trusted figures before a true emergency” - Well said!

The City of Boston has been looking at families of design concepts for bridge types and will present them at this meeting. Improving mobility, honoring history, strengthening resiliency and placemaking of a new destination along Boston’s harbor are four themes that the City will attempt to incorporate, to the extent feasible. The City invites you to provide input at this meeting to help identify a preferred bridge type that meets the City’s and community’s needs for Boston’s next century.

Bill would prohibit handheld cell phone use while driving

R

ecently, Representative David Biele joined his colleag ues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in passing legislation to ban drivers from using hand-held electronic devices in vehicles unless they are in hands-free mode.

“Distracted driving is a serious public safety issue on our streets and factors into too many preventable accidents,” said Rep. Biele. “I’m proud to support this bill which prohibits handheld cell phone use

while driving. This bill makes our streets safer by requiring drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel and their eyes on the road, instead of on their cell phones.”

The bill defines hands-free devices as those that engage in voice communication with and receiving audio without touching, holding or otherwise manually manipulating the device. Law enforcement officials have the ability to issue warnings to drivers until Dec. 31, 2019 before the law goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2020.

The bill will also: Allow for drivers to use mapping or navigation devices if they are affixed to the windshield or integrated into the vehicle and only involve a tap or a swipe; Exempt use of electronics in the case of an emergency and for first responders if they are using the devices as part of their duties; Penalize drivers with fines $100 for the first offence, $250 for the second offence and $500 for third and subsequent offences; and create a public awareness campaign informing and educating the dangers of using technological devises while driving and the

There was more good news as well, especially since it concerns our own local summer enjoyment: South Boston’s surrounding bay, harbor, and

M Street Beach, despite its popularity and its resulting crowds, leads the pack at 100% cleanliness. City Point Beach and Pleasure Bay rank very high at 99%. Carson Beach, which is really the longest and most exposed stretch of South Boston beachfront, comes in at a solid 98% over the last

six years. Only the beaches at Nahant and Nantasket in Hull, which are at either end of the local Metro shorelines, rank in that 98%-100% range.

Memorial Weekend in South Boston

by Rick Winterson Last weekend was quiet in South Boston. Despite good-to-excellent weather here, many of us took off for other places. Why? Because it was Memorial Day weekend, informally known as the first weekend of summer around here. And the weather really obliged, which was especially welcome after we (barely) lived through yet another “year without a spring” And despite the distraction of warm, sunny weather, Memorial Day – and indeed the entire weekend – was faithfully, well, and truly observed.

A Vigil Mass on Saturday afternoon, the 25th, in St. Augustine’s Chapel, now part of the Gate of Heaven/ St. Brigid Parish, seemed to have historic memorial overtones. The Chapel is dedicated to Fr. Matignon, who was the Pastor of Boston (and all of New England) through the 1790s and the early 1800s, shortly after our own Revolutionary War. The cemetery that surrounds the St. Augustine Chapel had been decorated with flags set at each military veteran’s grave marker.

Monday was Memorial Day itself. A visit to the Garden of Flags on the Boston Common, on the hillside by the Civil War’s Soldiers and Sailors Memorial, renewed the stunning display of over 37,000 American flags – one for each military combat death of a Massachusetts resident, since the War for Independence began in

1776. Yes, that’s over 37,000, and it’s accurate. The last stop on Memorial Day was the “Fallen Heroes” obelisk on Seaport Green in South Boston.

This monument towers over the green where it’s located. It is now adorned with a stand-alone plaque of Sergeant First Class Eric M. Emond (USMC and Green Beret), a “Fallen Heroes” Co-Founder and eventually a casualty of war in the Middle East himself.

It was a weekend to remember.

Christmas in May? This was a sight on the sidewalk along Dorchester Avenue a few days ago –well past the middle of the month of May. Apparently, someone who celebrated Christmas in December, 2018, got confused about the dates when Boston disposes of old Christmas trees each year. Or maybe they had just awakened. Who knows?

In any case, the balsam tree’s needles were a uniform reddish-brown, without even a hint of green. Although it’s late, we hope the tree’s owner had a Merry Christmas and a Happy (even if prolonged) New Year.

by Rick Winterson For multiple decades, Fort Independence has opened its sally port doors to visitors on warm weather weekends, As everyone knows, the Fort is located on Castle Island and it’s frequently referred to as “the Castle”, which was a word that was once frequently used to refer to a stonewalled fort. The Fort and its activity as a carefully preserved landmark and a living museum is due to the energy and ingenuity generated by a long, strong public/private partnership – the DCR (the Department of Conservation and Recreation) and the CIA (Castle Island Association).

Well-informed guides conduct tours that are varied, colorful (check out all the Fort’s many, many flags), and historically accurate. They take just under an hour; kids are welcome, when they’re attended. Several thousand

Perhaps as many as 10,000 visitors crowed into the Fort for the CIA’s annual two-day Halloween Party, which truly rocks. Take advantage of South Boston’s “Castle”. You might even meet the shade of Edgar Allan Poe, a.k.a. “Edgar Perry” he was stationed there once upon a time, and may have based his most famous short story on a Fort legend.

On Sunday, May 26, 2019, all were welcome to a Farewell and Thank you reception for Deacon Adam Rosinski, SJ, that took place downstairs in Cardinal Cushing Hall following the 10:30 Mass at St. Brigid Church at which Bishop Robert Hennessey was the celebrant and Deacon Adams assisted. Deacon Adam will be ordained as a Jesuit Priest on Saturday, June 8, 2019 in New York. We thank Deacon Adam for his year of service to our parishes and congratulate him on his ordination to the priesthood. Our prayers and best wishes go with him.God Bless you, Deacon Adam!

Save the Harbor/Save the Bay 2019 Metropolitan Beaches Water Quality Report Card

BCYF Tynan Community Center Fun in the Sun Camp

In 2018, weekly water quality testing at Boston’s regional beaches began May 24th. Supplemental daily testing of Constitution Beach, King’s Beach, Malibu Beach, Tenean Beach, and Wollaston Beach began on June 7th, 2018. Testing concluded on Labor Day weekend, September 3, 2018.

These scores reflect the percent of samples that complied with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's single sample limit for bacteria which is the most straightforward way of evaluating beach water quality and potential impacts on human health.

In 2018, the overall water quality safety rating for Boston Harbor's regional beaches was 95%, a slight improvement over last year’s score of 94%.

M Street Beach in South Boston topped the list again this year, while Tenean Beach in Dorchester and King’s Beach in Lynn and Swampscott were the lowest-scoring beaches in the region again in 2018.

It is important to note that the Boston Water and Sewer Commission continues to identify and address illicit connections that contribute to the problems at Tenean Beach in Dorchester, while both Lynn and Swampscott have planned improvements to their sewer and storm water systems, which we expect will result in improvement in water quality on King’s Beach upon completion.

Though 2018 was the wettest year on record for Massachusetts, with 61 inches of rain - more than 16 inches above the 20th-century average - the total rainfall during the 2018 sampling season was very similar to 2017, though more than double than in 2016.

There were several large rain events during the 2018 swimming season, three of which were greater than 1 inch – they were 1.16, 2.68, and 1.38 inches respectively. While the average daily rainfall for the summer was 0.12 inches, more than 42% of the rain came in just three

Registration for the South Boston Summer Collaborative BCYFTynan Fun In The Sun Camp took place on Tuesday, May 21st.

It will be on going until July. The Community Center will accept registrations Monday through Friday, 3-8pm Fun In The Sun in an on-site (7) week program for children 7-12. Program begins Monday, July 8th and is held Monday-Friday 9am until 3pm. The camp will include arts & crafts, recreational activities, daily Condon Pool Swim, board games, various off-site field trips, as well as weekly special events. Program provides campers with the opportunities for growth and development in physical, educational, social and cultural skills. The 7 week program fee is $350 and half price for each additional sibling. We are asking a $100 deposit at registration and the balance should be paid at the start of camp. Updated Immunization Records are required before a child can begin camp.
