Intersection at L & East 6th – Still Dangerous

T

he familiar sounds of screeching tires and tearing metal rang through the neighborhood yet again last week, at the corner of L and East 6th. While no injuries were sustained in this particular crash, it was another stark reminder that this notoriously dangerous intersection is still exactly that – dangerous.

Local residents continue to

express concerns for their safety ten months after the fatal accident that claimed the life of 2-yearold Colin McGrath and injured his 4-year-old sister, Sloane.

“People are racing from the light at L and 8th to make the light at L and 5th, and vice versa”, says a local resident, (who prefers to remain anonymous), who narrowly escaped being struck by a car at the same intersection precisely one month prior to Colin’s death. The resident suffered facial lacerations when the side mirror snapped off of an out of control vehicle as it wrapped around a telephone pole, t hen went cra shing into her child hood home, causing structura l da mage.

D ay l i g ht i n g , in this case, consists of white safety pylons that seemingly have done precious little to prevent accidents and in fact, some say, may cause more harm than good. “I’ve noticed drivers now pull out even further to look for oncoming traffic, and not any slower than before”, says another local neighbor. The pylons have also eradicated much-needed parking spots in the congested area affecting not only residents, but also local businesses with c u stomer s a nd employe e s in need of places to park.

The consensus from the

community is that the safety measures taken are simply not enough. That the painted yield lines and warning lights will do little to prevent future accidents, and that the placement of the speed bump in the middle of E. 6 th between K and L is as confusing as it is useless.

The community was back on high alert less than two months after the McGrath accident when a jeep was struck by another car and f lipped onto it’s side, despite an electronic speed sign being installed a month prior.

Considering speed wa s reported to have been a nonfactor in the jeep crash, and visual obstruction a non-factor in the McGrath accident, (it was street cleaning that day, therefore no parked cars), it would seem obvious that pylons and unenforced speed limits are not the solution to such a perilous intersection in one of Boston’s most heavily trafficked

a rea s. Yet t he cont inued outcry from the community requesting a traffic light (or at least a four way stop sign) has continued to go unheeded.

Some residents a re so concerned for their children’s sa fet y t h at t he y si mply circumvent the area altogether.

“I have a 21 month old and I’ll drive the long way around to avoid that intersection”, says local neighbor, Jo Moynihan,

“and I’m not the only one”.

While L and E. 6th is certainly not the only dangerous intersection in South Boston, this one in particular has been flagged for many years as a major cause for alarm. In the past two years alone there have been over twenty accidents and as that number continues to climb, it begs the question: if the tragic fatality of one of our community’s children wasn’t the catalyst for appropriate action, what will it take?

Mayor Walsh Hosts Coffee Hour in South Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department will host the 20th Annual Neighborhood Coffee Hour in South Boston on Wednesday, May 22nd at Joe Moakley Park/Dorothy Curran Tot Lot, 1005 Columbia Road It will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

“Condon Connects” Kids with Disabilities/Autism Family Resource Night

A

ll are invited to the Condon CC this Wednesday, May nd 22 , 6pm for an informational and resourceful evening to join together families of youth/teens with disabilities and Autism.

The Condon Community Center, in conjunction with representatives from the Boston Police Department’s Bureau of Community Engagement, would like to invite ALL parents, grandparents, caregivers, and other interested parties to engage in an evening devoted to persons with disabilities/ Autism. The event will involve the sharing of resources, exchanging of best practices, planning for our First Annual Responders Safety Day ( to be held at the Condon this summer), and the solicitation of ideas for future events. Our vision is to develop a solid network (meeting regularly at

the Condon Community Center) to address and support the needs of families and individuals living with both physical and cognitive disabilities.

We are excited to hear from local families about their current needs and wants for family members.

Parent peers are routinely the best resource when it comes to sharing pertinent program information and ideas. Topics may include: summer camp programs, sibling support groups, the introduction of “Autism Eats” to a local restaurant, future swim groups (under the direction of certified instructor for persons with disabilities), and much more.

Perry Students Visit City Hall Councilor Ed Flynn, Councilor Michael Flaherty, and Councilor Frank Baker had a great time hosting the students and teachers of the Perry School in South Boston last week at City Hall. They were also joined by Council President Andrea Campbell, Councilor Annissa Essaibi George, and Haley Dillon from the Office of Neighborhood Services.

Miller Opens “Liquid & Luminosity” at FP3 Gallery Katherine Downey Miller is a skilled painter - basically an abstract expressionist who creates in oils, acrylics, and mixed media. Her works are multi-sized, ranging from 12”x18” to wall-filling works over six feet on a side. Most important, she has been “fascinated by water: its movement, energy, metaphysical qualities, and symbolism.” Miller calls this exhibit of 18 of her works “Liquid & Luminosity”. The writer was most drawn to Miller’s small groupings of her works, reminiscent of diptychs and triptychs.

Liquid & Luminosity is in the FP3 Gallery, which is on the ground floor of the FP3 Residences at 346 Congress Street. A ring of the bell, and the concierge will let you in. The FP3 is a fascinating small gallery.

Approximately ten years ago, the FP3 developer intentionally put aside a street level space that would add an intimate working gallery to the Fort Point/Seaport area – various exhibits have now been presented there for a decade.

Miller’s opening on Wednesday, May 8, was nicely set off by refreshments from Mayhew Wine Shop on Melcher Street, along with a talk by their wine specialist, Chandler Parker. The Liquid & Luminosity exhibit will be shown until August 16, seven days a week.

Gavin Gala 2019: The Road to Recovery

P

erhaps as many as 500 people gathered to celebrate the 2019 Gavin Gala. This event took place last Thursday evening, March 9, in The Loft – a fifth floor banquet room on the west end of the Design Center. The celebration was formally entitled “Road to Recovery: 2019 Benefit Gala for the Gavin Foundation”.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to two highly deserving individuals, who had greatly aided the cause of recovery from addiction over many prior years. Specifically, Michael G. Bellotti, now President of Quincy College and once the Sheriff of Norfolk County, received the Gavin Foundation’s 2018 “Man of the Year” Award.

Brain Hannon, Union Liaison for Eversource Local 369 and long-term mentor and AAWOL volunteer, was honored with the Gavin’s 2019 “Caring Hearts” Award.

There was something quite fitting in having the Gavin Gala at the Design Center. As you know, that structure was originally built to house the Boston Army Base. At the time of its opening a century ago in 1918, it was reputed to be the largest office building in the world. The Army Base has now been repurposed, renovated, and reopened as the Innovation and Design Building, still commonly referred to as “The Design Center”.

As such, it’s a good metaphor for the clients of the Gavin Foundation, who are successfully dealing with recovery issues of their own.

Mayor Walsh took the podium, speaking of how there was no alternative for those who were addicts just a short 50 years ago.

The Gavin Foundation originated in South Boston back then, the brainstorm of a retired Probation Officer named James Gavin, who lived on Fourth Street . The Gavin House, a so-called “halfway house”, is still there. The Gavin Foundation has grown and grown again – into complete family support, and into other towns as well.

Karen actually had two functions at the 2019 Gala. She served as one of the four Gala Co-Chairs, and she’s Vice President of Creative Office Pavilion, who consented to be the 2019 Gala’s “Presenting Sponsor”. Thank you, Karen.

Michael Bellotti received his 2018 “Man of the Year” Award from Mayor Walsh, who immediately declared. “Today (May 9) is Michael Bellotti Day in the City of Boston.”

Bellotti’s efforts to bring treatment to offenders while he was Sheriff of Notfolk, rather than punishment for addiction, was one key to his award. He continues to work with the Gavin in his new capacity as President of Quincy College.

Brian has been an A AWOIL volunteer, along with mentoring countless people in addiction.

For your information, the term “AAWOL” is an acronym for AA combined with Another Way Of Life. Brian selflessly “gives back” to A AWOL whenever asked.

And Brian is also known for his thousand-watt smile. Rep David Biele presented Massachusetts citations to both awardees.

Ocean Spray Opens in Seaport

O

ne of the most well-known and important business names in Massachusetts formally opened its doors in South Boston’s Seaport on Monday, the 13th.

That’s Ocean Spray, who has been moving about 60 of its employees into premises in the WeWork enterprise on Sleeper Street over the past couple of months. The goal of such a move is crucial – innovation of new cranberry-based products, followed by creative marketing of them. And there is no better location for such an effort than South Boston’s Seaport – a truly innovative district and a working colony of immensely creative people, often referred to as “The Silicon Valley of the East”.

A brief historical summary – since 1930, Ocean Spray has been based upon cranberry bogs and the enterprise of their 700 farmer/ owners. To say it is a well-known, worldwide success is an obvious

comment. Ocean Spray is a $2 billion cooperative. Much of Ocean Spray’s success is due to continuously developing a host of new products made from cranberries. Originally, cranberries were used mostly as a kind of folk medicine, not as a foodstuff. The name “cranberry” actually combines two words – “crane” and “berry” – because the spring blossom resembles a crane.

Ocean Spray’s opening reception was crowded. Dignitaries in attendance included Mayor Marty Walsh, Rep. David Biele.

The WeWork complex on Sleeper Street features an open office design that is grouped around a central common area, where the Ocean Spray reception actually rook place.

The opening reception was hosted by Bobby J. Chacko, who is the Chief Executive Officer and President of Ocean Spray. Chacko gave significant credit for Ocean Spray’s growth to its 700 family farms and his 2,000 colleagues at Ocean Spray. He then emphasized the value he places on the people who’ll be responsible for innovation and subsequent marketing of the new offerings he expects to see coming out of their Seaport operation. Some of these innovations will be based upon the fact that cranberries are a healthy, highly nutritious food.

He says. “Ocean Spray is not only an iconic American brand, but also has a great history of innovation.”

innovation as the key function of the new Ocean Spray branch. He mentioned that he is still amazed whenever he comes to the Seaport and sees all that’s new there. He stressed the importance of the word “vision”, commented that the Seaport has a superb record in executive opportunities for women, and

invited Ocean Spray’s people to visit Martin’s Park when it opens in June.

There’s (much) more to follow with Ocean Spray’s new enterprise in the Seaport, but South Boston Online will close for now by repeating that cranberries and the many, many products that contain them are very nourishing.

Spring Stroll, 2019

ast Thursday evening, May 9, South Boston’s Annual Spring Stroll brightened what had been a wet, cold spring in the Old Home Town.

South Boston Online can only give you a brief cross-section of all that went on during this community event, but it was colorful indeed.

Clothing, street entertainment, and floral displays of all kinds were perhaps the major themes in this year’s Stroll, which was presented

by Karen Stanley of the South Boston Chamber of Commerce and Donna Brown of the South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation (the SBNDC).

of the Library helped the Stroll materially by holding one of the Friends’ patented Book Sales. A three-wheeled bicycle taxi (a.k.a. “cabriolet”, or “cab” for short) made the Stroll along East and West Broadway much easier.

The “Late R isers” provided roving musical entertainment, out-of-doors and based upon the Dixieland style of jazz.

This year’s Stroll, began at L and East Broadway, traveling up through Perkins Square, and then ending on West Broadway.

A new (and unusual) facial beauty enterprise, staffed by Nurse Practitioners (NPs), has opened at 395 West Broadway.

It’s ca lled “LE X R X”; the Strollers were greeted there

by Caitlin, Taylor, and Alexa, who’s one of the founders of LEX R X. We have been told

by Hanadi Hamzeh, the owner/ founder of South Boston’s Covet consignment store, that she’s

opening a branch of Covet on Charles Street by Beacon Hill.

Covet had an engaging (and engaged) couple of folk singers – the Luke and Stephanie Folk Duo - during the evening of the Stroll.

Micro Plant Studios at 365 West Broadway themed its offerings of f loral miniatures around the celebration of Mother’s Day. As always at Micro Plant Studio, its owner Julio Cesar Roman presented his plants strik ingly and meticulously.

It was quite a successful Spring Stroll this year. And you know something? Spring in South Boston is finally here.

City Councilor At-Large Michael F. Flaherty Announces Ballot Qualification

oston City Councilor At-Large Michael F. Flaherty announced that he is the first candidate to qualify for the preliminary ballot in his re-election efforts.

BCYF Tynan Community Center Fun in the Sun Camp Registration for the South Boston Summer Collaborative BCYFTynan Fun In The Sun Camp will take place on Tuesday, May 21st @ 6:30pm. It will be on going until July. The Community Center will accept registrations Monday through Friday, 3-8pm Fun In The Sun in an on-site (7) week program for children 7-12.

Program begins Monday, July 8th and is held Monday-Friday 9am until 3pm. The camp will include arts & crafts, recreational activities, daily Condon Pool Swim, board games, various off-site field trips, as well as weekly special events. Program provides campers with the opportunities for growth and development in physical, educational, social and cultural skills.

The 7 week program fee is $350 and half price for each additional sibling. We are asking a $100 deposit at registration and the balance should be paid at the start of camp. Updated Immunization Records are required before a child can begin camp.

“Last year, I heard from numerous stakeholders on the significant concerns surrounding short-term rentals as we resolved to stabilize housing in our neighborhoods. Additionally, as Chair, I have held committee meetings on an array of proposed matters, including: increasing access to affordable housing through the means of updating the City’s Linkage Law and Inclusionary Development Policy; strengthening opportunities for civic engagement through various City departments and resources; and guiding equitable regulations for emerging industries.”

In addition to his role as the Chair of the Committee on Government Operations, Councilor Flaherty made note of his role in relation to the City of Boston’s Community Preservation Program. “As Chair of the City Council’s Committee on the Community Preservation Act (CPA), I recommended nearly $43 million in funding approval for 91 projects. Every neighborhood across Boston has received funding for a project that falls under the three aspects of the Community Preservation Act historic sites, parks & open spaces, and/or affordable housing. It is great to see how much progress has been made since the

passage of the ballot initiative less than 3 years ago, and I look forward to residents’ continued efforts to preserve our city.”

Councilor Flaherty acknowledges that while much progress has been made, there are still disparities that need our urgent attention. These include: public health and safety concerns surrounding the opioid epidemic; violence intervention and trauma support services; working to ensure that all of our communities benefit from the ongoing rapid growth and development across Boston; sustainable solutions to make Boston more climate resilient and environmentally conscious; and a school system that should implement a district-wide STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math)-based school-to-career pipeline.

As a husband, father, neighbor and proud lifelong Bostonian, Boston City Councilor At-Large Michael F. Senior Babe Ruth Tryouts Tryouts for the Senior Babe Ruth will be held this weekend at King Field in Moakley Park. Times are 5PM on Sunday May 19 and Monday May 20.

We have several openings for new players and we encourage all to tryout. To be eligible you must be a resident of South Boston and parts of Dorchester that border Southie. You must be 19 or younger this calendar year. The Southie team is a travel team that plays in the South Shore Senior Babe Ruth League.

New head coach Jim Williams with the help of Billy Connor will run the tryouts. The team would like some help from anyone interested, be it a parent or someone who has coached in the past. The season starts on June 10th and runs for about 6 weeks and then playoffs. See you at the field.

How We’re Investing in South Boston

E

very spring, we release our Capital Investment Plan which funds the critical improvements to our infrastructure and facilities in Boston over a five-year period. It is a reflection of our priorities, and is guided by the voices of over 15,000 residents who offered input for our citywide plan, Imagine Boston 2030. Our Capital Plan funds the essentials of community life -- our schools, streets, libraries, and parks, including climate and resilience projects. It’s a commitment to all those who call Boston home and to our future generations.

Here in South Boston, we’re ma k ing inve st ment s across a wide range of projects, including parks and open space, streets and transportation, our schools’ infrastructure, and

our delivery of City services.

We’re allocating much of our budget to infrastructure and transportation efforts in order to make navigating Boston safe, reliable, and equitable. That’s why we’re investing $250,000 to complete the reconstruction of Congress Street from Fort Point Channel to West Service Road. This project includes bu i ld i n g ne w side w a l k s , street lights, trees, and street furniture. We’re also allocating $250,000 towards analyzing the transportation capacity and developing the design for future improvements to the South Boston Dorchester Avenue area.

And, we’re investing $7.4 million to continue the Crossroads Initiative at Summer Street, which will improve roadways, sidewalks, street lighting, and bicyclist safety in the area.

We believe that funding e qu it a ble a nd a c c e s sible community spaces is crucial to keeping Boston not only a beautiful city, but also an open and welcoming one. That’s why we’ve allocated $600,000 towards a new open, gathering space on L Street that will provide older residents a place to relax and socialize while

encouraging young children to engage and play. Additionally, we’re ma k ing a $510,0 0 0 investment to improve playing fields and other amenities at Orton Field, next to the Condon School. We’re also making a $250,000 investment in new play equipment for children ages 2 through 5 and safety surfacing for the Medal of Honor Park.

We’re funding a $99,000 project to complete exterior and improve the use and access to the backyard at the South Boston Branch of the Boston Public Library. As you may know, our neighborhoods are highly exposed to sea level rise due to our low-lying coastline.

That’s why we’re making a $15 million investment to renovate the BCYF Curley Community Center, which will support re-programming and provide resilient protection from climate change. We’re also funding $3.3

million worth of citywide climate resiliency planning efforts, in addition to $20 million for the design and implementation of a climate resilient waterfront park along the Fort Point Channel We’re also investing $2 million to implement the Moakley Park master plan, which will redesign the park to mitigate f lood risk.

Now that we’ve submitted Boston’s budget, where do we go from here? First, to the City Council, where it will be reviewed and adjusted as necessary. After it’s gone through that process and secured approval, it will go into effect, starting in July 2020 and running throughout the next 12 months. South Boston Catholic Academy May News On May 1, 2019 Grandparents and Special Friends were invited to join our students for a Mass, which Father Casey, our Pastor, was the celebrant and the 5th graders did a wonderful job at and we had a chance to pay a special tribute to Sister Evelyn (former First Grade Teacher) who turned 104 years old in March. Following this Mass all were welcomed to come to school for a special class visit. Students made/decorated special flower pots for their special guests and families learned more about our outdoor garden initiative. Families were also invited to view the Art Show that exhibited a variety of artistic talents/styles by all our students with the help of our Art Teacher, Mrs. Deb Putnam and the Drama Club performed their original performance “Mysterious Florida Street”. The students in the SBCA Drama Club did a fantastic job writing, performing, setting up the stage and directing this play with the help of our Music Teacher, Ms. Eleanor Tynan. We loved being able to showcase all of our wonderful student’s talents to our special visitors. The students in K1 made very special Mother’s Day cards for their moms. We hope all moms had a wonderful Mother’s Day!
