Senator Collins Supports Sports Wagering Legislation in the Senate Conference Committee to Resolve Differences with House

S

tate Senator Nick C ol l i n s supp or te d S. 2844, A n Act Regulating Sports Wagering, as it passed the Massachusetts Senate. This landmark bill, having now passed the Massachusetts Senate, would legalize sports betting throughout the Commonwealth, with significant public support. If passed, the bill would allow Massachusetts residents ages 21 and older to place bets on professional sports at casinos, slot parlors, and other licensed gaming locations. Now Massachusetts residents now have the opportunity to join their counterparts in 33 other states throughout the country

in betting on professiona l sports. It is estimated that this bill would generate $35 Million yearly in revenue for the Massachusetts General Fund, with 9% of that deposited in the Public Health Trust Fund, which was established to prevent and treat gambling addiction. S en ator C ol l i n s also co-sponsored amendments that would legalize betting on college sports—a measure that was included in the House bill— which was not adopted in the Senate. A conference committee will be established to reconcile differences between the two bills. “This legislation would put us on par with a significant majority of other states in the countr y,” said Senator Collins. “It will create jobs and revenue in an industry that was overdue for regulation.”

Fourth Fest Returns

Rev. Burns (the Fest’s Emcee) with Fest Auctioneer Tom Tinlin.

by Rick Winterson

I

n recent years, the Fourth Presbyterian Church at Dorchester Street and Vinton has put on celebrations they’ve entitled “Fourth Fests”. These Fests celebrated the Church’s congregation and the activities in the Fourth Church; the Fests were always enjoyable events held in various places around Boston. In a way, the Fests were a part of the identity that came from being a member of the Fourth Presbyterian Church. Over the last two years, the Fourth Fests, like so many other in-person gatherings, fell victim to the quarantines made necessary by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Fests resumed once again last Saturday

afternoon. This particular Fourth Fest was devoted to celebrating the Fourth Church’s community programs, which include dance, voice, piano lessons, and theater programs, along with a trauma ministry, GBIO leadership, a half-dozen recovery groups, and a food pantry/meals program. More specifically, last Saturday’s Fourth Fest supported the rebuilding of the Church’s sixweek Summer Meals Program during the coming summer months. It was held in the Church itself. The afternoon’s entertainment began with a classic jazz quartet – sax, piano, drums, and double bass. The biggest “hit” played by “Four at the Fourth” was a highly rhythmic “Who Could Ask for Anything More?” This was followed by two musical comedy selections performed by the youth and young adult theater groups in the Fourth Church. After these performances, a sumptuous barbecue was served. The outstanding brisket was quite lean; the properly lumpy mashed potatoes were super-excellent. Part of the Fourth Fest’s afternoon of activities was a fundraising Auction conducted by well-known local Auctioneer Tom Tinlin. The Auction items featured four Patriots tickets, four Red Sox

tickets to the Cardinals’ game, a pair of seats at the Lady Gaga concert in Fenway, two passes to “Saturday Night Live”, and a brace of tickets to see the Tampa Bay Buccaneers play (with Tom Brady, of course!) – in Tampa Bay itself, yet. A concurrent silent auction included a hand-crafted cutting board by Bramantico Fine Wooden Goods and tickets to the Red

Sox versus the Orioles on May 28. We’ve mentioned the high quality of the music everyone enjoyed at the 2022 Fourth Fest. If you’d like to follow up the excellent jazz quartet on your own, Jon Hazilla was their drummer at the Fourth Fest. He is a Professor at Berklee College of Music. His phone contact info is 617-7478213; his email is jhazilla@berklee.edu

Ethal and Andy’s worked for others for many long years. Now it was their turn to own everything they sold and to sell whatever they owned. And just as a reminder, that’s known as “going to work for yourselves”, a.k.a. “The American Dream”. You might be understandably surprised when you first walk into Ethel’s and Andy’s. Without a doubt, It’s very small. Even so, its menu is extremely extensive. We counted well over a hundred offerings, including side orders, desserts, and drinks. And that does not include newspapers, lottery tickets, and many other over-the-counter items. You see, there’s a compact but complete kitchen at the back of Ethel’s and Andy’s that goes along with the grill at the front, a grill that is permanently staffed by Robert Rekowski, Ethel and Andy’s son. Robert now has 50 years of grilling experience to offer customers and his staff includes Patricia, his wife of 37 years, along with his sons Robert (Jr.) and James. Rick, a 35-year employee, and Matthew both man the kitchen. Barbara, a nother long-term employee, was on her day off when we stopped in at Ethel’s a nd A ndy’s la st Saturday. When you first go there, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see a full spectrum of breakfasts at Ethel’s and Andy’s, ranging from a variety of egg sandwiches right on up to omelets with an array of sides. Numerous hot-and-cold lunch sandwich offerings include club sizes; these can be topped off with homemade cookies and brownies for dessert. When we asked Robert what the customers ordered most often, he immediately replied, “Burgers and breakfast wraps.” In part, the reason for this is due to truck traffic along both First and Summer Streets. The night-time truck drivers who pass nearby are devoted fans of Ethel’s and A ndy’s rapidly prepared fresh food to

order. The hours at Ethel’s and Andy’s ref lect this - 4:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. on weekdays, 4:30 to 11:30 on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays. Yes, that’s 4:30 a.m. (!!!), which lets overnight truck drivers get some breakfast-to-go, and then head into the City and Downtown before the rush hour begins. You may not think that a phone number can become a South Boston tradition, but we found out that’s certainly possible. The original phone number at Ethel’s and Andy’s 50 years ago was (617)2699775. Well, it still is (we checked!). Call them yourself and treat yourself to breakfast.

Look who's cooking!

Executive Givens

Chef,

Lambert

By Carol Masshardt (Part 3 of series featured local chefs)

I

t doesn’t take long for Executive Chef, Lambert Givens, of Hunter’s Kitchen and Bar to recall where it all began. “My memories of cooking are of my mother, grandmother, and father in the kitchen cooking. We were proud of what did, and I grew up loving to cook, too. It just always stayed with me,” he said. Lambert Givens grew up in Avon, Ct, where his family still lives, with a mother who was a teacher and father a linesman, and he the middle of three with two sisters. He then went on to study and play football at South Carolina State. There his business marketing degree helped this tireless worker match his passion with a plan. After college he did a corporate stint at a company in Quincy and did

security at Liberty Hotel where he would share his true interest in being a chef with the general manager. Even with passion long brewing, a strong work ethic and a business background, success comes slowly in this competitive field. Mr. Givens has proven to have the patience and temperament to work in the ever-changing food industry. “I started as a line cook, then Junior Sous Chef at Capo and Lincoln (the same owner group as Hunter’s) and then went to work as Executive Chef at Cafeteria on Newbury St. Then the pandemic hit, and I went back to Lincoln, but it was tough. I was out of work for four months and in the hospital, but survived it,” he said with both a characteristic ease and seriousness. “I have nothing against people who go the Culinary School route,” he said. “It just isn’t my way. I’m a hands-on, learn-as-you-go person and that is just the way it works best for me,” he said. Givens has unlimited enthusiasm for Hunter’s which opened in August and for the people who helped him get there including Nicolas Dixon, Culinary Director of the group and Eric Aulenback, one of the owners. “They have been super helpful at every step, “he said. “This was a dive bar,” he said.” And now it’s a restaurant with this log cabin vibe and some Southern food. I have a great time here. Hospitality and welcome are a special thing and we have it.” The location now has about twenty cooks, as many kitchen staff and twenty more front house, so the

operation is bustling with lunch, brunch, dinner, and late night. “You need the right staff to maintain trust, “he said. “I need to know everything is going right,” he added explaining his near daily presence. Also mindful of health, he explores gluten free options and has salads among the popular Southern and quality pub food. The chef is one of a team that makes a venue hum and that is surely true at Hunter’s. From the vibe of a later weekday afternoon, something is going right at this place. The customers seemed relaxed and the bartender, Alessandra, looked right at home with confidence and the warm welcome characteristic of the place. “I love this. I am a nurse as a regular job, and this gives me

balance and fun. I love the live music and get great meals,” she said. And so, Lambert Givens has reached another stage carried forth by persistence, appreciation, and a drive to keep cooking. “I’m a simple guy who’s enthusiastic about food and the support this community has given me is really important, ” he said. On the rare day or hours off he walks his Siberian Huskey and, as time allows, visits his family which now includes two nieces. This man is clear where his heart lies and fortunately for South Boston, when not with his beloved family in Ct., it is very much at 110 Dorchester St.

Opening Night: “Riverdance” by Rick Winterson

A

n Opening Night in Boston’s theater district is always a thrill to read and to hear about. Our City enjoyed a superb Opening Night on Tuesday evening at the Wang Theater on Tremont Street. After 25 years (and two pandemic postponements), “Riverdance” returned here and repeated the record-breaking success it enjoyed in Boston during the 1990s. You don’t have to be told that “Riverdance” involves Irish dance and music. The instrumental performances – pipes, fiddles, and concertina “squeezebox” – are outstanding; the drumming from upper stage left and the Act Two bodhran solo are also excellent. The “Riverdance” cast performs many beautiful vocals as well. These are both joyful and touching, and the music takes on an unmistakable Spanish touch now and then – possibly a not-so-subtle reminder of the legendary Milesian migration? And then there’s the dancing! It is graceful and rhythmically perfect – almost athletic in its intensity, during both the solos and the ensembles. We really can’t say

enough to adequately praise the dancing. The various set pieces connect, and they truly “flow” without interruption from one set to the next one, without any hesitation or interruption. Not a single step or tap was ever out of place on Riverdance’s Opening Night. The production aspects of “Riverdance” also deserve praise. Sound, lights, and staging seamlessly support the performances. The designs of the stage settings are impressive, too. That’s especially true of the

magnificent photographs that form the backdrops for each scene in “Riverdance”. Look at them carefully; enjoy them. Early in Act One, note the photo of an ancient copper beech with its twisted branches and massive trunk. And in Act Two, one of the scenes takes place in Brooklyn. Is South Boston Online suggesting that you see “Riverdance” for yourself? We absolutely are! And bring your family and friends – it could be another 25 years before “Riverdance” returns once again (they begin a Midwest tour next week). Six performances remain before the final show on Sunday, the 15th; there are matinee performances on both Saturday

and Sunday. As far as we know, balcony tickets are still available. By the way, since “Riverdance” often fills the Wang’s stage with ensemble dancing, balcony seats will give you some very enjoyable viewing. And get to the Wang Theater a half-hour before curtain time. Spend 30 minutes looking around the Wang’s magnificent lobby area and its rococo, baroque, Victorian decorative splendor. It’s really a sight to see! We’ll close with a comment we overheard after “Riverdance” got a standing ovation on Opening Night. The comment came from an enthusiastic member of the audience nearby, who said while he clapped, “I think I just died and went straight to Heaven.” Nicely spoken!
