It’s time for compliments, resulting from the opening day of the Lawn on D on Saturday, May 21, for the summer of 2016. But the biggest compliment that can be paid to the Lawn on D is the presence of the crowd

that more than eagerly anticipated the lawn’s first day of its summer season.

Families came and went, but it seemed that 500 or more were on hand for the entire time.

Observing Memorial Day as a nation

n Monday, May 30, Americans will celebrate Memorial Day. Unfortunately, traditional observance of this day has greatly diminished over the years. But it must be remembered, not just as a time to relax and cook a couple of steaks on the barbecue, but as a time to reflect upon those who sacrificed their lives throughout history. It must be remembered as a time to honor those who served their country, so that we could continue to enjoy our freedom and democratic way of life. It must be remembered, as stated by President George W. Bush, on Memorial Day in 2004, as a time when we honor, “All of our fallen soldiers, their commitment to our country, and their legacy of patriotism and sacrifice. By giving their lives in the cause of freedom, these heroes have protected and inspired all Americans.”

Some consider Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, as the first observance of Memorial Day, when he dedicated a portion of

the battlefield as a cemetery for those who consecrated that soil in the sacrifice of battle. In 1865, Henry Welles, a druggist in Waterloo, N.Y., began promoting the idea of decorating the graves of Civil War veterans. On May 5, 1868, the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic General John A. Logan issued General Order #11, his Memorial Day Order, designating May 30,

This cemetery housed the graves of 20,000 Union dead and several hundred Confederate dead. The South however refused to acknowledge this day until after World War I. ning at 3 p.m. local time on that day, as a time for Americans to observe the “National Moment of Remembrance.” In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y., as the birthplace of Memorial Day. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by Congress, and the last Monday in May was designated as the day for it to be observed.

On Memorial Day, a small American flag is placed on each grave in Arlington National Cemetery. The president or vice president, after giving his speech honoring the contributions of the dead, lays a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Taps are subsequently played.

Later, as the clock strike 3 p.m.in every corner of America, we are encouraged to pay respect to all of our fallen heroes, by remaining silent for 60 seconds. This “Moment of Remembrance” is the least we can do for the men and women throughout history who sacrificed their lives so that we could continue to enjoy ours.

Memorial Day: A time to mourn, remember and pray

This past Sunday, members and volunteers from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Thomas J. Fitzgerald Post #561 of South Boston, visited several cemeteries throughout Boston to place American flags in front of each headstone of a military veteran. This time honored tradition, ensures each veteran is remembered and honored, as we also reflect on Memorial Day in our country.

We were touched to see the determination of Sister Lois Connors and Sister Florence Kahler (Sisters of Saint Joseph), join other volunteers in walking the hallowed grounds of New Calvary Cemetery in Mattapan and St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury, seeking the names of veterans to properly place an American flag at the gravesite. Other post volunteers also visited Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester to remember and pray for our fallen heroes at that site. As we passed the grave (at New Calvary Cemetery) of U.S. Army Private First Class Michael J. Perkins, of South Boston, a Medal of Honor recipient, for actions in World War I, we said a silent

Additionally, on Sunday, May 29, the members and volunteers of our post cordially invite you to join us as we honor our fallen heroes in our annual Memorial Day ceremony, as we march from the post to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Medal of Honor Park at 9 a.m. Post members will then lay a wreath of remembrance at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Memorial Day weekend reminders

Mass at Dorchester Heights Phil Wuschke, a veteran, called South Boston Online to alert us to the planned Memorial Day observance on South Boston’s Dorchester Heights. Mass, to be followed by appropriate Memorial Day ceremonies, will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 30. Memorial Day began as “Decoration Day” 150 years ago in 1866. Its observance is a historically important American custom, which remembers the ultimate sacrifice paid by those military veterans who died in combat.

Fitzgerald VFW Post hosts ceremonies Sunday South Boston Online mentioned 2016 Memorial Day observances at the Fitzgerald VFW Post No. 561 (VFW, 517 East Fourth St.) in our last issue. This is a brief reminder of those observances; as always, the public is cordially invited to attend and take part.

The ceremonies at the Fitzgerald Post will take place on Sunday, May 29. They begin with an assembly and breakfast collation in the Post at 9 a.m. At 9:30, the Post members and their guests will march to Medal of Honor (M Street) Park, where there will be a solemn wreath laying at the Vietnam Memorial.

After the ceremonies, members and guests will return to the Post for a complimentary lunch. Please plan to join us – see you there.

Continued from Page 1 crescent swings – selfies were encouraged. The youngsters enjoyed a bubble bath filled with light plastic balls. They jumped onto and then rode inflatables of all kinds. There were miniature houses, crawl spaces, and hidey-holes everywhere. Creative tables let the kids make butterflies; they watched hand puppets wrangle with each other. It was really, truly a non-stop, safe, memorable play afternoon for the kids And it wasn’t that the adults had nothing to do. Ping-pong – with more or less accuracy – was popular, as were bocce and beanbag tossing – with mostly less accuracy. Should we point out how bad the adult aims were?

Among the adults were South Boston’s Bob O’Shea and the new (since January) Executive Director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority David Gibbons. Both of them were visibly pleased with the crowds and the overwhelming reception of the summer of 2016 Lawn on D opening day.

A truly vibrant steel band entertained the crowd in the Pavilion. The Steel Rhythms had that Jamaica sound down pat. Shades of Harry Belafonte, the Lord Invader, the Kingston Trio (and Kingston itself, of course). The

most expert of the Calypso dancers were the children, who were brought to the bandstand by their parents. The parents watched while the kids danced.

How is it that children who can barely walk dance so well?

In the informal conversation with O’Shea and Gibbons, they mentioned the extensive summer programs being planned for the Lawn on D. Among them are offerings by the Boston Public Library and the Museum of Fine Arts. As a just one example, the Lawn on D’s opening afternoon last Saturday was followed by an adult dance that evening, a jazz brunch on Sunday morning, and another afternoon of playtime for kids of all ages.

There’ll be something for everyone all summer long on the Lawn on D. In just under two years, the Lawn on D has become an instant South Boston tradition.

The Lawn On D is now open (with food and beverage service available during these times) through Labor Day on Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 10 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 8 p.m., according to a press release.

From Labor Day through Columbus Day, the lawn will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 10 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 7 p.m.

nity endeavors. Helping others was one of her top priorities in life.

“The scholarship committee is made up of Stephanie’s friends and family,” Cheryl Flaherty wrote in an email. “Too many to name but the person who started the process is Linda Leeman, Stephanie’s best friend. She had the idea to keep Stephanie’s memory alive by giving back to the community in her name. Education was so important to Stephanie and helping take out the sting of tuition costs by giving scholarships to current and former South Boston residents was Linda’s idea.

“Seventeen students in grades 7 through 12 submitted essays answering three questions we developed,” Flaherty added. “Wil Patrick Hingston’s essays were selected. We also had a drawing contest for students grades K-6 for students at the South Boston Catholic Academy (SBCA) and Saint Peter’s Academy.

We received over 120 drawings which were on display at the South Boston Yacht Club. They were all so beautiful that we could not choose a winner and pulled a winner from each school via lottery. Maxwell Milan from SBCA and Nyla Anderson from Saint Peter’s were the drawing contest winners.

“We are looking forward to making this an annual event,” she concluded. “And appreciate everyone who took the time to write the essays and submit drawings.”

One of Wil Patrick Hingston’s essays was about a person he admired most in life. That person was his dad, Brian Hingston, who recently suffered a fatal injury while trying to break up a fight in Dorchester. He

was 45 years old. Wil’s essay is emotionally moving and is presented verbatim.

“A person I admire is my Dad. Even though he is no longer with us in person, he has made me the person I am today. I admire him because he was a hard worker, kind, funny, humble, and an all-around good guy. He was a man who you could always depend on. My Dad was by my side for as long as I can remember, he helped me with all my problems. He was a great listener and someone I could always turn to for advice. He was my go-to-guy for everything. I admire him because he is my forever role model. He worked two jobs every day to let us go on fun trips and to have the things we want. Even after working all day, he was willing to lend a helping hand, whether it was for myself, my siblings, friends, or even strangers.

Since he was a man of his word, he would make sure he helped everyone who asked. My Dad lived a healthy lifestyle which made it possible for him to run the Boston Marathon three times, along with the Charleston Bunker Hill road race numerous times. The strength and discipline of my Dad as a runner is a huge source of pride for my siblings and I. My Dad was someone anyone could look up to and he continues to be even though he has passed. My Dad was an organ donor, he saved five lives; five different people got my Dad’s organs and are now able to get a second chance at life. All my life he was my hero, but now that he has saved five lives, he is one to others too. My Dad was the perfect example of what a father should be. His influence on me will last a lifetime.”

Collaborative will honor two citizens at awards night

The South Boston Collaborative Center, located where the Washington Village Branch Library once was at 1226A Columbia Road, is a pillar of South Boston. Briefly stated, the Collaborative lends a hand – both professionally and compassionately – to anyone in the throes of an addiction, whether it’s from drugs, alcohol, prescription medicines, or any other form of substance abuse. What’s most important of all, the Collaborative renders its services confidentially and anonymously.

The Collaborative was founded almost 20 years ago, in 1997. This was in response to an epidemic of teen suicides related to drug abuse at that time. And the Collaborative was successful. But to succeed, an effort like the Collaborative needs the work and support of many community members. Every year, the Collaborative recognizes two of these devoted community people with the Jack Leary “Compassionate Warrior” Award and the Joe Walsh “Community Service” Award.

This year’s award evening will be held in a new venue – Marine Park at the end of East Broadway, in the area around the bandstand (sometimes called Farragut Park). The free event is Thursday, June 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. And of course, there’ll be a stunning sunset to glorify the occasion.

A major feature of these evenings in years past has been their raffles.

This year is no exception. Three quartets of Red Sox tickets – yes, that’s three sets of four, a total of

12 – will be the three prizes in a $10 raffle. These seats are located in the State Street Pavilion; dinner and parking is included. The three games are June 15 (Baltimore), July 26 (Detroit), and Aug. 31 (Tampa Bay). Now, you just can’t beat that with a stick.

The high point of the evening on June 9 will be the brief awards program.

Cathe Walsh will receive the Jack Leary “Compassionate Warrior” Award for her many years of support of the Collaborative. She regularly provides refreshments from her business, Cranberry Café at 704 East Broadway. She has been a member of the Collaborative’s Board for 17 years, and has served as its treasurer for the last seven years.

Walsh refers to the Collaborative as “incredibly necessary” – a statement that is certainly confirmed by the recent history of opioid abuse in South Boston. In her own words, she volunteered for the Collaborative so she would know where to go, if one of her friends or family members ever needed help.

The 2016 Joe Walsh “Community Service” Award will be conferred on Joan Lynch. She was born in Dorchester, grew up in Pembroke, and now lives here. For almost 20 years, Joanie (in recovery herself ) has been active in the recovery community. She worked in a Laboure program for families of addicts, started by Sr. Maryadele and affectionately nicknamed the Jack Leary Program; she has also worked with Kay Walsh at the Action Center.

Sports keep young athletes busy in South Boston Last weekend in South Boston there was plenty of energy being expended on the playing fields and in the gyms, as youngsters played in softball, baseball and basketball games. South Boston Catholic Academy holds spring concert The annual SBCA spring concert was held on Wednesday, May 11. It was standing room only! Congratulations to Mr. Doug MacLellan our music teacher, our students, faculty, staff and Carolyn Martin, who accompanied on the piano, for an outstanding show. This year’s theme

was Show Time, which include songs from musicals, movies and television.

The show began with the sixth grade students singing, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” followed by the K1 singing, “I Gotta Crow” and “My Favorite Things.” Second Grade sang “Do Re Mi” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed

Without a Smile.” Pre-K sang “In My Own Little Corner” and “I Won’t Grow Up,” first grade sang “ Let’s Go Fly A Kite” and “Under the Sea,” third grade sang “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and “Tomorrow.” K2 sang “I’ve Got No Strings” and “Spoonful of Sugar,” fourth grade sang “Singing

in the Rain” and “Everywhere You Look.” The South Boston Catholic Academy Children’s Choir sang “Rainbow Connection,” fifth grade sang “Eye of the Tiger” and “Maybe” and the sixth graders ended the concert with a fun show stopping tune of “We Go Together.”

Tynan Happenings The BCYF Tynan community Center will be hosting the FunIn-The -Sun Program (Summer Camp) from July 5th through August 19th. It is a 7 week program for Girl’s and Boy’s ages 7-13. Hours of operation will be 9am to 3pm. Registration will be first come first serve basis so please if interested drop by the BCYF Tynan and pick up an application.

The program provides campers with the opportunities for growth and development in physical, educational, social and cultural skills.

BNBL: The BCYF Tynan will be the site for Girl’s BNBL 15U & 18 Under in South Boston. We are in the process of organizing the teams.

The league starts on July 5th, so please, if you’re interested in playing please stop by the bcyf Tynan.

BNBL will also offer a FREE Pee Wee Developmental program for boys and girls ages 6-11 yrs. old,

here at the BCYF TYNAN. The Pee Wee Development League helps youth ages 6-11 develop the fundamental skills necessary to play team basketball.

Participants will learn basketball skills through drills and game play.

Participants will then be placed on teams and will play games in a non-competitive setting.

Youth Basketball League: We just completed our 3rd week of league play. Many of the boys and Girls are displaying some great talent as the weeks go on. Last week the Thunder and Magic were tied at halftime until Michael Noonan came out strong in the second half for the Magic netting 9points along with Ryan Alexander who had a strong game. The second game seen Evan Markos scoring 13 points as the warriors went on to beat the bulls 27-16. Robert Wiesnieski played an excellent game for the bulls scoring 12 points.

George LoCasio brings a touch of Italy to the Ollie seniors

Does stuffed sausage ravioli and capreze salad bring a smile to your face, along with images of your favorite Italian restaurant?

Well, that’s what Papa George did for the seniors at the South Boston Neighborhood House Senior Center.

Papa George – also known as our favorite “yes” man George LoCasio – brought his knowledge and expertise direct from Italy by hosting a cooking demonstration and luncheon here at the center.

While cooking, George entertained the seniors with marvelous stories of his ventures in Italy where he learned to cook from chef Biago Longo in Sorrento, Italy, and chef Nora Chimirri in Syracuse, Sicily.

The Ollie seniors enjoyed a fabulous day starting with homemade lemoncello, and tomato with mozzarella and basil, followed by homemade garlic bread. The main course consisted of homemade pasta right out of the pasta maker, meatballs, gravy, and finishing up with gnocchi, and raviolis stuffed with pork.

George is passionate about his culinary skills, which started learning when he was a boy cooking with his mother making meatballs and an assortment of Italian dishes. George’s passion comes through in every dish he prepares. All ingredients are fresh from the market (or his garden depending on the season), organic, and prepared cholesterol and sodium free.

The seniors were mesmerized by George’s charm and eloquence combined with his enthusiasm for all things Italian. Georges reminisced about his travels to Palermo, Catania, Salerno, and Positano. George spoke

about people he met and the amazing chefs that introduced him to their culinary skills.

Although George artfully demonstrated the secrets of his fine cuisine, he would not reveal his secret recipe for his irresistible meatballs. George is a show all unto himself; his wit and knowledge entertained the seniors all day long.

After a full day of eating, and laughing, George answered many questions and took the time to sit with the seniors and discuss culinary traditions and customs that were past down from one generation to another. Here in Southie where George grew up and still resides with his wife Mary, a large portion of the Italian population lived down by East Second Street. Still to this day in spite of the many changes Southie has undergone, Italian American pride night remains. Annually the Italian American Pride Night Committee selects a person who constantly gives back to the community and George was named the Italian American man of the year in 2014.

The seniors couldn’t speak enough about the great day they had.

Rainey Fiasconaro and Jane Babine were the consummate waitresses enhancing Papa George’s travelling show, handling the trays of food with ease and perfection.

George will bring his expertise right into your home. Given enough notice, George will entertain, demonstrate the art of Italian cooking and present to you and your guests a wonderful evening of the finest Italian Dinning.

South Boston Stars basketball team wins state title

On Sunday, May 15, at the Kingston Sports Complex, the South Boston Stars defeated the RABC from Rhode Island, 49-33, to capture the Zero Gravity Division III state championship.

The Stars played three games on Saturday, May 14, at the Boston Basketball Club in Waltham. In the opening tilt, they defeated Middlesex Magic, 57-45. Next game, they cruised to victory against the Bay State Flash, 61-31. In the final game on Saturday, the local entry defeated the New England Playaz, 50-18.

On Sunday, the team traveled to Kingston. In the semi-final game, the Stars played the New England Long-

horns and won, 63-45. Jake Harrison netted 30 points and Marc Iannaco scored 27 points. In the championship game, the Stars defeated RABC to capture the title. Iannaco, Harrison, and Giovanni Noel scored 13 points apiece.

Coach Marc Iannaco was happy for his players.

“They all played great,” he said.

“Everyone contributed throughout the tournament. They work hard, sacrifice, and play together. These kids are a pleasure to coach “Winning this title means we qualify for the Zero Gravity national tournament,” he added. “This tournament is being held in Boston on June 10, 11 (and) 12, and we are looking forward to this next challenge.”

Southie softball season is in swing

The 2016 South Boston Girls Softball League (SBGSL) season is underway. Established in 2007, the SBGSL is a registered Amateur Softball Association (ASA) organization that continues to provide mentorship and competitive play for hundreds of girls and young women ages five through 17 in the South Boston area and neighboring communities.

It is the program’s goal to motivate players to participate and compete with positive attitudes, integrity, and good sportsmanship, while simultaneously offering opportunities to academically and socially empower its members.

The SBGSL offers house league programs at the eight and under, instructional, 10 and under, 12 and under, and 14 and under levels during the spring season. It is the program’s goal to motivate players to participate and compete with positive attitudes, integrity,

and good sportsmanship, while simultaneously offering opportunities to academically and socially empower its members.

For the second year, the Fighting Irish 16 and under competitive travel team will represent the SBGSL playing against teams across the Northeast from June through August. The current schedule includes bi-weekly games and four tournaments in Eastern New England. This program has seen success in its first year and continues to grow into a competitive program beyond the Boston community. The tournament system provides a forum for the development of a higher level of play and opportunities to be scouted by local colleges, private high schools, and post-graduate institutions.

The Fighting Irish 16 and under club sees a return of over eleven players and has roster spaces available for additional athletes.

South Boston Farmers Market returns next week The South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation, the current sponsor of the South Boston Farmers Market, will hold an Opening Day Celebration at the market on June 6.

Check in with old favorites Freitas’ & Wenger’s Farms to get some flowers and early vegetables. Welcome our new fish vendor Ray the Fish Guy and bakery vendor PB Boulangerie!

The riders return

Thomas Regan and Mark Delamere are in front of the map that plotted out the progress of the fundraising cyclists – Tom Regan, Michael Kineavy and Tim Connolly – which South Boston Online reported on in our last issue. Well, the riders made it all the way to Florida (look closely at the trail of thumbtacks that breaks the Florida border at Jacksonville). They completed their more than 1,000 mile odyssey Sunday afternoon, May 22, and got back to South Boston Monday night. They started their ride from South Boston on May 12.

“I’m really proud of them,” Delamere said.

Details of their epic ride will follow – stay tuned.

Boston Neighborhood Soccer League will play at Moakley Park The Boston Parks and Recreation Department has announced that registration is now open for the 2016 Boston Neighborhood Soccer League (BNSL).

This five-week 6 v 6 league offers young soccer players ages 8 to 14 the opportunity to compete against each other and develop their skills.

The program divisions include co-ed 8 to 10, co-ed 10 to 12, boys 14 and under, and girls 14 and under.

This year, with support from the US Soccer Foundation, BNSL will expand to four sites: Almont Park in Mattapan; LoPresti Park in East Boston; Millennium Park in West Roxbury; and Moakley Park in

South Boston.

Teams play two games a week Monday through Thursday evenings at 5:45 and 6:45 p.m. In case of game cancellation due to inclement weather, make-up games will be played on Fridays. The league will run from Monday, July 11, through Thursday, Aug. 11.
