Get outside and give back as a tour guide on Castle Island

re you new to South Boston? Or perhaps you’ve lived here for a while, and now you’d like to “give back” in return for the Southie experiences you’re enjoying. Possibly you’d simply like to make some very enjoyable friends, while giving your sunscreen a workout.

Interested? Consider joining the Castle Island Association (the “other” CIA), an organization of 5,000 members, who are responsible for one of the most magnificent historic sites in Boston and vicinity, as well as one of the most striking harbor views in the city.

Then think about volunteering.

Right now, volunteers are being sought for guided tours of Fort Independence. These tours are learning experiences for both the guides and visitors to the fort.

They take around 45 minutes, and are scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. on summer Saturdays and Sundays. You will be trained to guide tours by the Historical Committee of the CIA.

Your own personal skills could be a crucial addition to other CIA areas of interest. Many such skills are needed in order to be effective “custodians” of Castle Island and Fort Independence. Any skill from carpentry to paperwork to administrative talents would be useful.

You are invited to take part in sunset viewing from the fort’s walls on summer Thursday evenings. You are welcome to join the Castle Island Choir. Led by practiced musicians, the choir meets each Monday evening. And the Castle Island “season” ends with a colorful, action-packed Halloween Mystery Walk – an unbelievable extravaganza that attracts thousands of kids and kids-at-heart (for free) during the two weekend afternoons just prior to Halloween.

Mass, to be followed by appropriate Memorial Day ceremonies, will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 30. Memorial Day began as “Decoration Day” 150 years ago in 1866. Its observance is a historically important American custom, which remembers the ultimate sacrifice paid by those military veterans who died in combat.

South Boston resident provides water for neighborhood pets

Did you ever think of South Boston as being mostly a desert?

Well, it is. Certainly, it rains here, but almost all of the storm water drains away quickly, with only a few puddles temporarily left behind. Otherwise, there is little or no fresh water anywhere out of doors. In other words, South Boston is normally a desert, and that can be hard on our cats, dogs and other pets.

Well, Chris Gregorio, who lives in the Msgr. Powers apartments at 120 L St., decided he would

do something about this. He has begun to set out water bowls, sometimes on one of his blankets when the wind is calm. He only asks that you sign your pet in – some 60 or so names are already on the cardboard posters he has hung on the Powers apartment fence.

Among these names are entries like “Hamlet,” “Kujo,” “Rambo,” “Dune” and “Geronimo.”

Is Chris’s courtesy unusual? Not really – it’s just Southie being Southie, as usual.

Collins votes to improve resources, strengthen support for veterans State Rep. Nick Collins joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives to pass two separate bills which place renewed emphasis on Veterans Services.

The first bill, the FY17 budget, includes more than $77 million in Chapter 115 funding for cities and towns, allowing them to fully fund veterans’ benefits, and includes an overall increase of more than $6 million since FY14. In addition, the House budget provides $3.66 million for veteran outreach centers and $2.9 million to combat veteran homelessness, a growing problem in the Commonwealth.

The second bill establishes an Office of State Veterans’ Homes and Housing to address long term housing and support, including a provision for veteran preference in public housing. It also updates existing law so that “Veterans Status”

is a clearly protected employment category, and ensures that all children of POW’s are eligible for the Public Service Scholarship.

“Our veterans deserve the best, and I am proud to reaffirm our commitment to comprehensive and accessible Veteran Services in the Commonwealth” said Rep. Collins (D-South Boston). “These bills continue to improve the services and opportunities provided to our brave men and women that have sacrificed so much.”

Understanding the sacrifice that military personnel and their families make, the Massachusetts House has consistently provided a continuum of employment, health care, educational, and housing support for its veterans. Both bills now move to the Senate for consideration.

This is “Mark’s New Ride” in this “Southie time’s” title.

A “Southie time” usually includes a major social event, which not only raises money, but is also hugely enjoyable. In this case, the social event was a Derby Day blowout on Saturday, May 7. Steve Mulrey generously set aside Amrhein’s, his landmark restaurant, for the Derby Day party. Amrhein’s was packed shoulder to shoulder with enthusiastic partiers. There’s nothing like a “Southie time” for enjoyment.

Finally, a real, true “Southie time” frequently includes something involving sports. Boston is a sports-mad city; Southie is perhaps Boston’s most sports-mad neighborhood. “A Bike Ride for Mark’s New Ride” is no exception to this rule. The ride is actually a 1,400 mile odyssey by three bicyclists, all the way from South Boston’s Saunders Stadium to Jacksonville, Fla. The cyclists – Tom Regan, Michael Kineavy and Tim Connolly – began their epic ride at sunrise on Thursday morning, May 12. They expect to complete their ride before the end of May and then return by van.

And that’s how “Southie Times” go. Impressive, aren’t they?

South Boston Online will keep you posted on the 1,400 mile ride’s progress; we’ll include some background on the three riders and other people involved in this effort. In the meantime, you can help this particular “Southie time” by making a donation for Mark Delamere’s “new ride.”

Despite being wheelchair bound, Mark was not one to hang back.

He enrolled in Motivated Fitness (315 West Broadway), where he has worked out at least twice a week ever since his accident.

Thomas Regan, the son of Ultimate Fitness owner Tom Regan, is Mark’s trainer.

“A Bike Ride for Mark’s New Ride” is actually a 1,400 mile odyssey by three bicyclists, all the way from South Boston’s Saunders Stadium to Jacksonville, Fla. The cyclists began their ride on Thursday, May 12.

That’s not all. A year after his accident, while still in rehab, Mark organized a street hockey tournament, “The Kevin Cellucci Classic,” to raise money for the Cellucci family, who were in the other car. Kevin Cellucci was left with a traumatic brain injury.

Thinking of others before himself, Mark (aided by his friends), raised $20,000 for Kevin.

So there is a reason – a worthy cause – to aim for: Mark is now an active 17-year-old and needs a car to get to Journey Forward for his ongoing therapy/rehab and to Motivated Fitness for his workouts. This car requires special fitting so he can drive it, which will cost $50,000 or more.

She’s a polite, young girl who enjoys living in South Boston. Her name is Courtney Mulligan.

Courtney, 12, is the daughter of Kimberly and Joseph Mulligan.

She has three older sisters, Chelsea, Casey and Caitlin, as well as one brother named Joseph. She has three pets. One cat that is brown, orange, and yellow is named Autumn and the other black and white cat is Mully. The dog, a pug and pit bull mix, is named Mully.

If Courtney Mulligan, 12, was the president she said that she would, “take care of the homeless by making sure they have a place to live and have food…and would try to stop the violence in the country.”

Courtney is in the sixth grade at Up Academy on Dorchester Street (the former Gavin Middle School).

She’s doing well in class, her favorite subject is math, and someday she hopes to be a veterinarian.

Her favorite color is black and her

favorite food is lobster. Her favorite TV show is “Happy Days” and her favorite entertainer is Tori Kelly, an American singer, songwriter and record producer.

In her leisure time, Courtney likes to draw animated characters and watch TV. She also enjoys reading and is currently reading the “Other Wes Moore” written by Wes Moore. In sports, she likes playing pick-up tackle and touch football, and soccer games, with her friends in Moakley Park. And she loves basketball. She was on her school team last year and had a lot of fun.

“I’m real good at basketball,” she said. “I like to shoot, dribble and run. I like the fast pace of basketball. I also like to win because I’m very competitive.”

At the Joseph M. Tierney Learning Center, Courtney does her homework and plays outside. She loves the staff because they help her with her homework and give her sound advice when she has any personal problems.

If Courtney was the president she said that she would, “take care of the homeless by making sure they have a place to live and have food… and would try to stop the violence in the country.”

East Boston Savings Bank business breakfast celebrates bank, city, local businesses

On Tuesday morning, May 17, East Boston Savings Bank added another chapter to what has become a tradition in South Boston and beyond – well beyond. Some years ago, before its consolidation with EBSB, Ed Merritt of the then Mt. Washington Bank began having business breakfasts that informed the local business public of the bank’s progress during the past year.

Dick Gavegnano, the chairman, president and CEO of EBSB, liked what Merritt was doing and decided to continue this tradition after EBSB merged with Mt. Washington.

The Venezia Restaurant in Port Norfolk on the Neponset River estuary was the business breakfast’s 2016 locale. Venezia is located centrally to the many branches that EBSB now has in various business and customer centers around Boston. Because of the strength of Boston’s business climate, there actually seemed to be an atmosphere of celebration at EBSB’s breakfast. With more than 300 business people attending, the 2016 business breakfast was a notable success.

After the eggs, bacon and trimmings were consumed, Gavegnano opened the program by welcoming the guests and Mayor Martin J. Walsh, the featured speaker this year. Gavegnano then gave a brief summation of the Bank’s growth and endeavors over the past year.

EBSB branches are proliferating – there are now 30 full service branches and a new “mobile banking unit,” which the bank calls “banking on wheels.” EBSB has a presence in Essex, Suffolk and Middlesex

counties. Three new branches have started in Dorchester, Chinatown and Brookline. EBSB is now staffed by 490 employees; it has more than $3 billion or more in banking’s three critical parameters: loans, assets and deposits. Its growth rate over recent years has been an extremely strong 17 percent (compounded).

Walsh took the podium after Gavegnano introduced him. Walsh spoke in a very optimistic, positive fashion about Boston and its prospects. First, he paid tribute to the policing and reduction in crime under Commissioner William Evans, a lifelong South Bostonian. He also mentioned that Evans will soon run his 50th marathon.

The mayor asked Evans (jokingly, of course) if he was uncomfortable being the guest of an East Boston company.

The mayor then echoed the sentiment of optimism at the business breakfast: “Boston needs strong businesses and more business people in our neighborhoods.” He enthusiastically brought up the recent ranking of Boston as the “Number One Technology City in the World.” Walsh gave some astonishing figures that included population growth to 700,000 residents by 2020, compared to 650,000 right now. He saluted Boston’s small businesses - all 40,000 of them, who among them provide 170,000 jobs.

The business breakfast, already full of optimistic notes, ended with Gavegnano giving Walsh a gift and an award. The event ended promptly at 9 a.m. And, yes, everyone there immedaitely returned to her/his own workplace.

Ollie student spotlight winner: Talia Scott

On a monthly basis, the South Boston Neighborhood House (the Ollie) recognizes its youngsters by announcing two “Student Spotlight” winners. These young members are recognized for their good behavior, kindness, caring and consideration, as well as being super kids overall. Talia Scott is one of the student spotlight winners for April.

Talia, 10, is the daughter of Carla Elwood and Cedric Scott.

She has three brothers, Jonathan, Joshua and Anthony, as well as two sisters, Mylee and Aurinna.

She also has a Rhodesian ridgeback pit bull mix dog named Kush.

Talia is in the Advanced Work Class at the Condon Elementary School in South Boston. She’s doing terrific in school and made the honor roll this past semester. Her favorite subject is math.

by Cassandra Clare. Talia also enjoys playing video games and hanging out with her neighbor, Donovan Lombard. In the world of sports she plays softball and basketball with her friends in the local parks. And she’s been a cheerleader in South Boston Pop Warner for the past six seasons.

“I like being a cheerleader,” Talia said. “I get to be loud and be outdoors with my friends. It’s fun.”

At the Ollie, she loves going to dance club, arts and crafts, and helping out staff members. Last November, Talia was overwhelmingly voted in as the Ollie president for all three age groups.

If Talia were the president of the United States, she said that she would, “Make sure all the trash on beaches was picked up.

Make sure construction workers finish their jobs because it seems like they’re always working … and make sure construction workers tear down all the big, ugly condos and build houses instead for families.”

Living in the White House might just be in Talia’s future.

“I think she just might be the president someday,” said Melissa Collins, an Ollie group leader. “I wouldn’t be surprised.

She’s an incredible kid, helpful to the staff, and a role model for the younger members. She’s like a little adult always helping others.”

Ollie student spotlight East Broadway resident performs winner: Alexis Llewellyn at Quincy’s Curtain Call Theater

On a monthly basis, the South Boston Neighborhood House (the Ollie) recognizes their youngsters by announcing two “Student Spotlight” winners. These young members are recognized for their good behavior, kindness, caring and consideration, as well as being super kids overall. Alexis Llewellyn is one of the student spotlight winners for April.

Alexis, 7, is the daughter of Paul Llewellyn and Kim Reeves.

She has two brothers, Patrick and Paul. She also has a white, brown and black cat named Red Sox and a Yorkshire terrier puppy named Charlie.

This summer, Alexis Llewellyn, 7, plans on learning how to ride her bike, going to the beach, and hanging out at the Ollie so she can go on daily trips to parks and beaches.

Alexis is in the first grade at the Condon Elementary School in South Boston. Her favorite subject is dance. Someday she plans on being a cheerleader or a veterinarian. Her favorite food is pizza and her favorite color is pink. Her favorite TV show is

“SpongeBob SquarePants” and her favorite entertainer is Shawn Peter Raul Mendes, a Canadian singer, songwriter and model.

In her spare time, Alexis likes watching TV. She also has been attending classes at Miss Linda’s School of Dance at the Michael J. Perkins Post on East Fourth Street. Alexis has been dancing for three years and her favorite move is the jazz step. She also enjoys reading and is currently reading “Henry and Mudge & Mrs. Hopper’s House,” a children’s book written by Cynthia Ryland and illustrated by Carolyn Bracken.

This summer, Alexis plans on learning how to ride her bike, going to the beach, and hanging out at the Ollie so she can go on daily trips to parks and beaches.

At the Ollie, she does her homework and attends dance club. She loves going to the Ollie and she likes the staff.

“They’re nice,” she said. “They let us have fun and make things fun for us. I really like going here.”

Melissa Collins, an Ollie group leader, always enjoys seeing Alexis after school.

“I love Alexis,” she said. “She’s great, kind to everyone and never in any trouble. She’s quiet but once you get her going she’ll talk your ear off. Alexis is awesome and is so smart.”

That’s Lorie Walsh of Broadway in South Boston, of course – East Broadway on the eastern slope of “Pill Hill,” to be exact. Lorie has just completed a run at Braintree’s Curtain Call Theater, where she performed as Felicity in Michael Cristofer’s gripping play, “The Shadow Box,” directed by Peter Kates. Many of Lorie’s friends from South Boston drove down to the Curtain Call

stage to see her in that very challenging role.

“The Shadow Box” debuted 40 years ago. It deals frankly – sometimes sadly, sometimes humorously – with the hospice movement and the inevitability of death. Even now, our society tends to wall off the experience of death, rather than facing (and eventually accepting) it directly. Almost two generations after it first opened, “The Shadow Box” still has much to teach us.

On Sunday, May 15, the Special Kids and Young Adults program held their annual bowling banquet at the South Boston Yacht Club.

The bowlers were presented with prizes and then treated to a buffet that also included their favorite ice cream dishes. It was a great time and everyone left with smiles on their faces.

Cheryl Flaherty who takes the lead in this endeavor was pleased that the season was another success for all involved.

“South Boston Special Kids and Young Adults spend every Sunday afternoon from October through

May bowling at the South Boston Yacht Club,” she wrote in an email.

“They take this very seriously and are very competitive and proud of their scores. More importantly they have a great time socializing with friends, volunteers, and members of the yacht club who stop by to say hello. “(Sunday) we ended our season with our annual bowling banquet,” she wrote in an email. “Where we presented each bowler with an award and praised them for their accomplishments. It a great group of people and we are so thankful for the generosity of the SBYC and the people of South Boston who support us.”

Friday is bike to work day in the city In celebration of National Bike Month and Bay State Bike Week, the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) is inviting residents, commuters and visitors to join Boston’s National Bike to Work Day Festival on Boston City Hall Plaza on Friday, May 20 from 7 to 9 a.m.

BTD encourages Bostonians to continue the celebration by taking advantage of the many bike activities and amenities that are available across the city.

Cyclists will be greeted at Boston’s National Bike to Work Day Festival on Friday, May 20 with a complimentary breakfast and a wide array of bike-friendly exhibitors. Volunteers will lead convoys of bike riders to City Hall from locations throughout the region at set meet-up times. Fun, free festival activities will include making spoke cards, posing at a photo booth, and riding in a “slow race” where the last person wins. In

addition, there will be a hands-on demonstration for festival attendees to learn how to load their bikes on an MBTA bus parked on the Plaza and about blind spots for bus drivers. More information about the event and convoys can be found at bostonbikes.org/biketoworkday.

Mayor announces SPARK Boston as new name of ONEin3 initiative During a celebration Monday evening, Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced the strategic rebranding of SPARK Boston, formerly known as the Mayor’s ONEin3 initiative, to help draw a larger and more diverse range of Boston’s millennials into civic participation. The rebranding is part of a concerted effort by the City of Boston to better engage, communicate and collaborate with residents between the ages of 20-34, a demographic that comprises over a third of the city’s overall population.

“The City of Boston’s vibrant and diverse millennial population is one of our greatest assets,” said Walsh. “We know that our young people care deeply about this city and its future, and we recognize the need for new tools and strategies to interact with them. It is our intention through SPARK Boston to tap into the energy and creativity of our young leaders to encourage them to rethink civic engagement and empower them to have an impact,

make a different and spark change in their own communities.”

SPARK Boston builds on Walsh’s proactive engagement of Boston’s young adults by encouraging their active participation in the city’s policies and programs. Young adults make up about 45 percent of eligible voters and nearly half of the city’s workforce. They are an economic engine, adding $1 billion annually in goods and services to Boston.

The celebration drew over 300 young adults to the TD Garden, including 300 members of the SPARK Council. During the event, Walsh encouraged attendees to become involved in SPARK Boston and other city programs. Fifteen City of Boston departments and related programs were on-site to showcase their initiatives, distribute informational materials, promote upcoming events, recruit volunteers, register new voters, sign people up for mailing lists and more.
