Colin’s Joy Shines Bright at Neighborhood Night By: Tara Kerrigan Hayes

A

special fundraising event was held on Tuesday, April 2, at Capo Restaurant’s Supper Club on West Broadway. Fittingly called Neighborhood Night at Capo, neighbors and loved ones showed up by the hundreds in a remarkable turnout to support Colin’s Joy Project, and to pay tribute to an inspiring family aiming to transform their grief into a legacy of joy and giving.

After the tragic death of their son, Colin, (just shy of his third birthday), parents Kerri and Brendan McGrath initiated Colin’s Joy Project, an organization dedicated to building and enhancing play spaces as well as sponsoring children and family programming in the community, particularly for families in need.

An interview with Colin’s mother, Kerri, reveals the transformation of the project since inception, and their hopes to better the lives of other families for years to come.

“At t he u rg ing a nd encouragement of the community we started a GoFundMe Page, and

it just simply exploded”, says Kerri.

“The original goal was to build a playground, but we thought about how we’d feel after we cut the ribbon and walked away, and we knew it needed to be more than just one playground, but also a way for Colin to continue to be in our lives by continuously bringing joy to families”.

When ref lecting on Colin’s short but poignant life, his parents realized much of their favorite memories revolved around play groups, story times, and music groups, many of which they had paid for. April NAC Meeting at BPD Station C-6

Suspect in theft of AMTRAK truck

T

he Neighborhood Advisory Council (the NAC) held its regular monthly meeting Wednesday evening, April 3, at South Boston’s Police Station C-6 on West Broadway. The meeting was chaired by BPD Capt. Joseph Boyle. Much of the meeting’s input

was provided by Sgt. Steve McNeil, Supervisor of the C-6 Community Service Office. In a way, this was a pivotal meeting, because it was the first meeting to follow the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day events and Parade (on March 17), as well as the first one at the beginning of Spring. Ten representatives of South Boston’s neighborhoods were on hand; six members of Station C-6 reported on local police efforts.

A brief review of the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade on Sunday, March 17, and the events leading up to it was generally positive. The crowd was estimated to be as much as a million strong, due to the weather that was on the chilly side but very fair. Citations issued numbered 128 for public drinking, two for public use of marijuana. There were three arrests. The local taverns and bars cooperated by closing early

in the evening, a few hours after the Parade ended. The NAC members who were present at this meeting that it was a well-run event that attracted nu merou s f a m i ly g roups.

Changeable but generally fair weather has brought with it a typical pattern – an increase in B&E’s (“ brea k ings a nd enterings”), more moving traffic violations, truck s barreling through intersections, and so on. It was noted that Rep. David Biele has submitted a bill to allow photos taken at intersections to be used as evidence in court proceedings involving tra f f ic violations.

Comments by representatives from Fort Point stated that their neighborhood is simply not ready for the introduction of marijuana (MJ) shops. More definition of the “rules of the road” is needed. Comments arose that

potential MJ vendors make many promises in community meetings and hearings, but often fail to fulfill them. The two proposed MJ sites at 50 Clapp Street and 60 Newmarket Square were brought up. Both of them border on Mass. Avenue and are less than a half-mile apart (see page one of South Boston Online’s Januar y 31 issue).

At the end of the NAC Meeting, photos of a suspect were given out. This as yet unidentified person is suspected of stealing an AMTR AK truck, and then driving it crazily in the Seaport along Northern Avenue, striking many cars and injuring a passer-by. South Boston Community Health Center’s Youth Ambassadors “Youth Anti-Vaping Initiative”

E

arlier this year, the FDA launched “The Real Cost” Youth E-Cigarette Prevention Campaign in an attempt to educate kids and teens about the dangers associated with e-cigarettes and vaping. The main message: e-cigarettes like JUUL put young people at risk for addiction and other health consequencesjust like traditional cigarettes.

students were current users of e-cigarettes in 2017 and additional research shows that the number nearly doubled in 2018. Based on those numbers, FDA now believes youth use of e-cigarettes, especially JUUL, is reaching epidemic proportions.

In re sponse to t he se alarming statistics, the South Boston Communit y Hea lth Center’s Youth Ambassadors have created a “Youth Anti-Vaping” initiative to share facts about

Juul with youth in the South Boston community. The goal of the initiative is to prevent under-age use of Juul and other nicotine related products through peer education workshops and support organized by the Youth Ambassadors program. In the workshops youth learn the facts and health risks associated with nicotine addiction. They also practice resistance skills and learn how to say no to these substances.

In Massachusetts a lone, tobacco companies spend 2.59 million dollars ever y week to ma rket t heir products.

Education about the dangers of nicotine found in JUUL is an important step in the prevention of youth addiction.

Youth A mbassadors and their adult mentors are available to faci litate informationa l work shops about Juu l for youth groups ages 9 and older.

The workshops are offered free of charge and are fun, informational and interactive.

The Youth Ambassadors are a group of teenagers, who have been performing good works and services in South Boston for 14 years. “We wanted to offer them not just a place to play, but a way to play - something sustainable”.

But it wasn’t until the holidays were looming – in what would be their first Christmas without their Colin - that the project really began to take shape.

“We needed to buy Christmas gifts for a three-year-old boy, to help fill the painful void”, Kerri said. That’s when they discovered the South Boston Neighborhood House (aka The Ollie) to support a family in need at Christmas, as well as Julie’s Family Learning Center, where at-risk mothers can receive free education, job training, and life skills (including daycare services).

Both organizations rely on private funding and both offer specific programs for disadvantaged families. It was in that same spirit of giving that Colin’s Joy Project was born and found a home, and the project took flight from there.

The tremendously successful Neighborhood Night raised a staggering $70,000, with the help of many volunteers

who donated both time and goods, in what would prove to be an event that would exceed everyone’s expectations.

In addition to raff les, silent auctions and a pop-up shop, there was a “Hands Up Auction”, officiated by Tom Tinlin, whose charisma, wit and enthusiasm inspired the already generous crowd to gladly reach deeper into their pockets. Still, it wasn’t the monetary gifts as much as the overwhelming turnout that touched the McGrath’s hearts.

“The most special part of the night was the support we felt, which spanned so many generations and backgrounds”, says Kerri. “The outpouring of love in the room was palpable, and representative of all the support we’ve felt along the way. It’s exactly that kind of support that we hope to emulate by giving back to the community that’s been there for us, as part of Colin’s legacy”.

But for guests, the most profound moments were the heartfelt speeches delivered by Colin’s family, including both parents, Kerri and Brendan McGrath, who have displayed insurmountable courage and grace in the wake of unfathomable grief,

Snippets of Colin singing, “You Are My Sunshine” elicited both tears and smiles from the crowd, many of us who had never met the little boy but prayed for him, mourned him and will continue to hold him in our hearts. The video closed with a clip of Colin laughing; an infectious, raw, jubilant belly

giggle that rippled through the room spreading waves of the kind of unique joy that transcends sorrow – even if just for a moment - as we were able to bear witness to this special little soul who touched many lives, will be long remembered, and leaves behind a lasting legacy of love.

USS Constitution to Host Easter Sunrise Service USS Constitution is scheduled to host Easter sunrise service aboard the ship, April 21, which will be open to the public and free of charge.

The nondenominational service will be led by Cmdr. David Shirk, a U.S. Navy chaplain assigned to U.S. Coast Guard Base Boston.

Guests will be allowed to begin boarding Constitution at 6:45 a.m., and the service will begin at 7:10 a.m.

All guests age 18 and older are required to show a valid state or federal-issued photo I.D. or passport to board the ship.

Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

On April 2nd, we made a promise: in five years, Boston will achieve high-quality Universal PreKindergarten for every four-year-old in the city. In the last five years, we’ve added 750 pre-K seats that are high-quality, and proven to close the achievement gap. Now, we’re going to be investing $15 million in our new Quality Pre-K Fund, which will close the high-quality gap by adding an additional 750 highquality seats in Boston Public Schools, and community-based organizations.

Through this commitment, we’ll be able to achieve our goal: a high-quality Pre-Kindergarten seat for every 4-yearold in the City in the next five years.

To make Boston a place where everyone can succeed, we need to start at the very beginning. The moment a child is born, they need high-quality resources and a safe place to call home. And when they set foot into the classroom, they need a strong foundation to set them onto the path to success. We must make sure that every single child, from every background and neighborhood, can get a strong start in life.

Access to high quality pre-K should be a guarantee, for every single family in Boston, regardless

When I took office, we were facing a gap of 1,500 high-quality seats. Ensuring equal access to highquality pre-kindergarten became one of our top priorities. We couldn’t have done it without the partnership and dedication of educators, partners, organizations, and many more.

One of the first steps we took was creating a UPK Advisory Committee.

The Committee gathered input from families, educators, and stakeholders.

Their recommendations have been our guiding light in how we’ve taken steps to expand access to high-quality pre-K. We’ve invested in new pre-K seats every single year since 2014, despite constraints on our budget and available classroom space. In our most recent budget for FY19, we designated $850,000 to develop 80 pre-K seats,

together with community partners.

We learned that communitybased organizations are central to our UPK strategy. We wanted to make sure we were building something to last and truly serve our communities.

And today, we’re providing more options for working families, right in their own neighborhoods. Because of our work, over the last six years, our initial gap of 1,500 seats has been cut in half. And now, this new fund will help us close the remaining gap, and achieve Universal high-quality PreKindergarten in the City of Boston.

This isn’t just about making enough seats available -- because if that were the case, we could have already achieved Universal Pre-K. This is about ensuring that every single pre-K seat we offer is a high-quality one that closes opportunity and outcome gaps -- and gives all of our children an equal chance at a strong start in life.

Our work isn’t done. We’re going to continue to develop our programs and pay attention to the needs of our students. We’re going to continue to seek partnerships to help us make our programs even better.

Any time we can make an investment in a young person, it’s a step forward for our entire city. And it’s an investment worth making.

Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn held a meeting with the leadership of the South Boston Neighborhood Associations & community stakeholders to discuss neighborhood concerns and the city budget.

The meeting was held Monday evening at the Boy & Girls Club and included members of the Andrew Square, City Point, West Broadway, Fort Point and Dorchester Heights, and St. Vincent’s Lower End Neighborhood Association.

Flynn discussed the FY 2020 budget and issues related to Vision Zero and pedestrian safety, Moakley Park, public safety, transportation, clean streets and other quality of life concerns.

“I’m happy to have had the opportunity to discuss these key issues that affect the residents of South Boston on a daily basis,” said Flynn. ”However, it is critical that we continue to maintain an ongoing dialogue about these areas of concern to help us all find ways to improve the quality of life for our residents.”

Taste of South Boston 2019 Sets Attendance Record

t was quite the festive scene on Sunday evening, April 7. The event was the 17th Annual “Taste of South Boston” Gala, which benefits the South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation (the SBNDC). This event has been a regular April highlight since 2003. On Sunday, the Taste of South Boston drew more than 400 participants to the Plaza Ballroom in the World Trade Center, who sampled sumptuous offerings of all kinds from 29 of South Boston’s dining and drinking establishments. And yes, that’s worth repeating: the 2019 “Taste” drew more than 400 guests – a record attendance. An even

dozen establishments from South Boston’s Seaport District joined with those from the residential side of our peninsula, ranging from Menton (Boston’s sole Relais de Chateau awardee) to the virtually historic Lucky’s Lounge. Also on Congress Street is The Smoke Shop, who served up divine ribs, with corn bread, to the “Taste” crowd.

Try “naturally pure” Japanese food, courtesy of Yoki Express at 53 Boston Wharf Road. The international flavors you can find in South Boston aren’t confined to the Waterfront, either. Roza Lyons had continental bistro offerings at the 2019 “Taste” event; Café Porto Bello featured their to-die-for lobster ravioli. Both establishments are located on East Broadway, of

course. There were even two dessert offerings at the 2019 “Taste” event.

Sweet Tooth provided various baked goods, including red velvet cake. CAPO brought several flavors of ice cream to their booth, which generated the longest line of guests at the 2019 “Taste” event..

The 2019 “Taste of South Boston” was a feast for eyes and ears as well.

Cool jazz was played by Steven Higgs on keyboard and Justin Meyer on bass. The Ballroom overlooks a great view of Commonwealth Pier. The auction and raff le items were attractive.

Both Dan MCole (who turns 90 this year) and Norm Crump exhibited their works of art.

There was a pleasant, non-stop

buzz every where, as all of us indulged ourselves. What else can South Boston Online say except to advise you to show up at the 2020 “Taste of South Boston” next year? That will certainly be quite the event!

The SBNDC, led by Donna Brown, is responsible for much of the affordable housing now available in South Boston, as well as the development of certain green spaces and small businesses. Eastertide at Fourth Presbyterian Church

outh Boston’s Fourth Presbyterian Church sits on the corner of Vinton and Dorchester Streets, a quarter-mile from Andrew Square. Its Pastor is the Rev. Burns Stanfield. The Fourth is known for its varied activities, including its performances and shows at the Church. Many of these are adaptations of Broadway musicals; some are presented jointly with other Boston churches. A number of these productions are original works.

Over the weekend of April 5, the young people of the Fourth Presbyterian performed an adaptation of the musical “Annie” that included a stage set and fully-costumed players.

A special guest appearance featured Bill McGonagle, the Administrator of the Boston Housing Authority (the BHA). He had a grandchild in “Annie” and took the role of Pres.

Easter Week is about to begin at the Fourth. We mentioned original works assembled by the talented members of the Church. If you can’t attend this Sunday on the 14th, the Fourth’s Passion Play will be performed again during the Easter Vigil on Easter Saturday evening, April 20, at 7 p.m.

On Holy (Maundy) Thursday evening, the Fourth will hold a Tenebrae service, which begins at 6:30 p.m. and includes the ceremonial foot washing that commemorates Christ’s washing the feet of His Apostles during the Last Supper.

On Good Friday morning, South Boston’s 2019 Ecumenical Way of the Cross takes place. This is an Annual Procession that gathers in front of St. Monica/St. Augustine Church at 10:45 a.m., stops 14 times to observe each Station of the Cross, and ends on Dorchester Heights about 12:30 p.m. All are welcome. Tynan Happenings Gym Notes Youth Hockey League Championship The Blue Jackets took on the Flames in the 2019 Championship game. The Blue Jackets came out strong to take a 4-0 lead after the first period. In the next period the Flames gave it their all and came back to score 3 goals but ran out of time. The Blue Jackets took the victory and championship title, by the score of 7-3. Sammy Flood had a superb game for the Blue Jackets, scoring 4 goals. Christian Devlin lead the Flames with 2 goals. Congratulations to the Blue Jackets!!

Coed Volleyball Championship The Hawkes Club took on the Turner Club in this years’ championship game. The Hawkes Club took the first two games, by the scores of 21-9 and 21-13. Turner Club regrouped to win the next match in a close one 22-20. Hawkes came back to win the following game and claimed the 2019 Championship Title. Congratulations to all!!

Famous Local Author, Jerry Pallotta, Surprises SBCA Students with Classroom Visits and aSpecial School Assembly!

Author Jerry Pallotta (know for his “Who Would Win” series and his Alphabet books) visited South Boston Catholic Academy on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, to present two special assemblies, and speak to the grade four class. The author talked to the students about his new book, “Who Would Win: Killer Whale or Great White Shark.” This presentation was filmed for a special series for Scholastic, to be aired on their web channel later this summer.

We thank Mr. Pallotta for this special visit to our school, we love his books and look forward to reading his new book, as well as, future books.

Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced the opening of SuccessLink, the City of Boston’s online tool that enables Boston youth to register for summer jobs. Boston teens between the ages of 15-18 can apply on the Department of Youth Engagement & Employment (YEE) website on youth.boston.gov.The SuccessLink application will be available through 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 12th, 2019.

“The SuccessLink Youth Summer Jobs program is a critical part of our effort to provide young people with chances to build lifelong skills, confidence and personal success through youth workforce opportunities,” said Mayor Walsh. “I encourage all Boston teens to register for the program, and take advantage of this incredible opportunity to get a head start in learning the workplace skills that will last a lifetime.”

In 2018, the City of Boston served over 10,600 young people through summer jobs, civic engagement, career development training, impact projects. Every year, the City of Boston partners with hundreds of community-based nonprofit organizations across the city to provide meaningful employment opportunities. Participants can work in various positions that include after-school program assistant, administrative assistants, mural painters, peer leaders, and more.
