Local naturalist to detail South Artists for Humanity Boston’s ‘unnoticed nature’ announces expansion plans

There are two stories here: To begin with, a staunch South Bostonian named Marjorie M. Gibbons endowed an annual series of lectures to be given in her memory at the South Boston Branch Library.

These have taken place in the spring of each year since 1981; the 36th Annual Gibbons Lecture is at hand.

It will be Thursday, May 5, at 6:30 p.m., in the Public Room of the South Boston Branch Library at 646 East Broadway. Everyone is welcome. There is no charge.

Second, George LoCascio, a local naturalist, will deliver the 2016 Gibbons Lecture that he has entitled “A Beautiful Dismissal: The Unnoticed Nature of South Boston.” Specifically, the topic of his talk will be his “Wildflowers of South Boston” survey, which he completed during the summer of 2014 and earned him

Letter to the editor

Bring back elected school committee members Lately, all that we are hearing about are racial issues inside Boston Latin and all we see on the TV news is Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson, who chairs the City Council’s Education Committee.

Back in the day, before they eliminated the elected school committee, issues such as this current one would have been dealt with by members of the elected school board. Parents would have applied pressure and the elected members would have held court. Parents back then had a voice, either on the original fivemember citywide committee or the 13-member district/citywide committee.

Today, Boston has a mayoral appointed Boston school committee.

I see them on BNN-TV all the time, but when it comes to issues such as the ones at Boston Latin, it is City Councilor Tito Jackson taking the lead. The school board’s silence is deafening. Of what value is this school board to parents of public school students in Boston?

I feel it is time to end the

appointed school board and put it back into the hands of Boston voters and Boston parents once again. The children should have a voice inside the Boston School Department; with an appointed board, they are voiceless.

Remember the reasons behind abolishing the election of school committee members? It was time to take politics out of public education. Well, how’s that been going?

I see politics having an even bigger impact today than ever before.

Let the people elect the school board members and stop pretending things are working well today.

Things aren’t working out and there is little pressure to improve public education.

The City Council Education Committee is not the Boston School Committee and shouldn’t pretend to be. Things will never get fixed doing the status quo. They can only get worse.

Continued from Page 1 celebration. Susan Rodgerson, the founder and executive/artistic director of Artists for Humanity, was the hostess. The expansion is expected to start with groundbreaking this fall; completion is slated for the end of 2017.

The South Boston organization “is a national leader in youth arts enterprise whose mission is to bridge economic, racial, and social divisions by providing underresourced urban youth with the keys to self-sufficiency through paid employment in art and design,” a press release from the mayor’s office stated.

There were perhaps 100 guests at the reception Monday. The panel for the formal announcement program included the EpiCenter expansion’s project sponsors: Liberty Mutual Insurance Chairman and CEO David H. Long, Cabot

Corporation CEO Sean Keohane, and Vice President of Global Gillette Business at Procter & Gamble John Mang.

The EpiCenter Building expansion proposes an added 52,000 square feet, which will each year give hundreds more of Boston’s high schoolers the skills and opportunities they need in the 21st century.

Artists for Humanity, the organization says on its website, was the city’s first Platinum LEED-certified facility, explaining that this is “the highest designation for energy sustainable buildings.”

Walsh also described the work with Boston teenage students done

by Artists for Humanity, and then concluded his remarks on an upbeat note by stating, “I am so happy for Susan Rodgerson and for everyone here.”

According to a press release from the mayor’s office, “Artists For Humanity is the largest onsite employer of teens in Boston and demand for services has exceeded its current space.”

A few figures about Artists for Humanity and its expansion tell an impressive story: 100 percent of Artists for Humanity members graduate from high school; 95 percent of them go on to some kind of

post-graduate work. The EpiCenter Building expansion proposes an added 52,000 square feet, which will each year give hundreds more of Boston’s high schoolers the skills and opportunities they need in the 21st century.

The expansion, according to the press release, will “help Boston meet the City’s dual objectives of providing living wage jobs for urban youth and filling business demand for skilled workers.”

There are many more stories to be told about Artists for Humanity. For now, just consider how effectively they communicate those three key 21st century messages of creativity, technology and environmental concern to Boston’s teenaged students. And you are well aware of South Boston’s many other wild denizens – a coyote, red-tailed hawks

by Moakley Field, Southie’s fearless American hen turkey, and too many skunks, possums, and raccoons to count. So why not wildflowers?

Now, botany is not just a pursuit of wild beauty. It’s also a science. During his summer-long survey, George was able to find and positively identify 75 wild plant species in South Boston that are members of 24 separate taxonomic families. Of these 75 species, just 19 are native to America and 56 are non-native.

Sounds like the people who populate America nowadays, doesn’t it?

As references, George used Newcomb’s “Wild Flower Guide” and “Wild Urban Plants of the Northeast.” Take a quick glance through these books after George’s lecture

South Boston Mites crowned Mayor’s Cup champions City held inaugural street hockey tournament during school vacation

The South Boston Mites were named the champions of the inaugural Mayor’s Cup street hockey tournament that came to an end in Charlestown on Friday.

They’re a talented group of kids and Coach Bobby McGarrell was proud of their performance.

“Southie played tremendous,” McGarrell said, “with a great display of teamwork and effort. They imposed their will on each opponent and controlled each game from the opening faceoff.”

Starting off, Southie defeated the Parkway Bruins, 6-1, in a resounding victory. The Southie team then cruised to victory against the South End team, 11-0. Next up was the unbeaten West Roxbury squad.

Southie prevailed 6-3. In the championship final, Southie played West Roxbury again (who were their

bracket winners). Southie jumped all over its opponent and never looked back, winning once again, 8-3.

The street hockey tournament was held during school vacation week, with games on April 19, 20 and 22, according to a press release from the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. There were two divisions: Mite, ages 7 to 8, and Squirt, ages 9 to 10. Mayor Martin J. Walsh was scheduled to do the ceremonial puck drop at the finals at the Ryan Playground in Charlestown on April 22, where the South Boston Mites won their division of the tournament.

“Each and every young man contributed a great deal to this title,” McGarrell said. “They were all very deserving. It was a sound, complete and total team championship. A great deal of thanks to the team manager, Kristin Dearden; without her this wouldn’t have been possible.”

Meet the Curley Community Center’s new youth worker Coaching resume makes him a perfect fit for the teen center

I remember this young man when he was a kid playing basketball for the former Saint William’s CYO program in Savin Hill. Then I watched him coach CYO games for Saint William’s and also manage Little League teams at McConnell Park which located adjacent to Savin Hill beach. After talking with him

last week, it only solidified the positive impression I’ve held about him and know he’ll do a great job as the Curley Community Center’s new youth worker. His name is Shawn McDonagh.

McDonagh grew up and still lives in Savin Hill. He is one of seven children and the father of two. He attended Don Bosco, but when the school closed he went to Trinity

Catholic in Newton, which he graduated from in 1999. He’s currently attending Urban College in Boston and will be receiving his associate’s degree in June.

In high school, McDonagh played varsity basketball and baseball.

Outside of school, he played CYO hoop and Little League baseball in Savin Hill. He was also a regular at the Colonel Daniel Marr Boys and Girls Club (now called the Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester), where he played hoop, wiffleball, floor hockey and indoor soccer. His most enduring sport’s memory is when his All Dorchester Sports League under 18 baseball team visited Cuba in 2001.

McDonagh pitched and the Dot boys defeated the host team.

When McDonagh was only 16 years old he started managing Little League baseball in Savin Hill. And, he hasn’t missed a beat for the past 18 seasons. His coaching philosophy is basic and much-needed in today’s sport’s arena.

“It simple,” he said. “The kids need to learn discipline, also have fun and to make these experiences memorable. They need to learn to be good sports when they win and when they lose…lose properly with dignity.”

McDonagh coached CYO basketball for six seasons before the Saint William’s program was merged with Blessed Mother Teresa in Dorchester (the former Saint Margaret’s parish).

He also has coached hoop for Saint Ann’s of Dorchester CYO for the past five years.

“Again,” he said, “discipline is the key. The players need to focus on the game. I like to coach the younger kids about the right way of playing the game. I’m not about winning or losing but developing these young players into better players and good, respectful people.”

McDonagh formerly worked for College Bound and at the Marr Boy’s Club. He likes his new challenge at the Curley Community Center and loves the outdoor ocean view. He hopes to draw in more kids so they can get involved in the homework club. He also intends to develop a physical fitness program for teens so they’ll stay in shape and be healthy.

“I’ve worked with kids my entire life,” McDonagh stated. “I love this type of job and hope parents reach out to us and send their kids here… and take advantage of this community resource. The teen center provides a safe haven for kids to stay off the street, stay active, workout, and be with friends in a positive environment.”

The Curley Community Center’s director, Fred Ahern, is happy to have McDonagh as a youth worker.

“Shawn comes to us with a wealth of experience mentoring and coaching young adults,” Ahern said. “He has a lot of enthusiasm, energy and fresh ideas for our youth/teen program. I’m looking forward to him continuing the great work in our teen program, which the former youth worker, Barbara Kelly, established at the Curley Center.”

Walsh has asked for Boston residents’ to participate in Boston Shines, a citywide initiative to clean the neighborhoods across the city. Boston Shines will bring together thousands of volunteers, including businesses, community groups and residents to clean up after the winter season.

“The people of Boston take tremendous pride in their neighborhoods and over the next three weekends we will reach every corner of the city to make Boston even more beautiful,” said Mayor Walsh. “Boston Shines represents the great work that we can accomplish when we work together to improve the quality of life for our residents. I thank all the volunteers in advance for their help in working to clean our streets and I look forward to doing my part to make Boston shine.”

The initiative will take place over the span of three weekends, and will focus on four service areas: physical service, university engagement, youth development and expanding City of Boston volunteer opportunities that help unite neighbors and communities.

Through Boston Shines, Mayor Walsh seeks to increase volunteerism and civic engagement

across the city, improve the quality of life for all Boston residents, and help demonstrate the City’s solidarity working together to make one Boston.

Representatives from the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services will call upon residents to help bring vibrancy back to the parks, sidewalks, school yards, and streets. Brooms, shovels, and other tools will be provided by the City for clean-up in the identified neighborhoods.

This year, Boston Shines will take place over three weekends in April and May: The first weekend, April 22 and 23, took place in Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, Roslindale, Roxbury, West Roxbury, Fenway, Mission Hill and Mattapan.

The second weekend, April 29 and 30, will take place in Bay Village, Downtown, Chinatown, Beacon Hill, Back Bay, South End and South Boston.

The third weekend, May 6 and 7, will take place in Allston, Brighton, Dorchester, West End, Charlestown, East Boston and the North End.

More than 1,500 people - including active-duty military, veterans from all branches of armed services, and local law enforcement groups - will gather at South Boston’s Carson Beach to run in honor of Sergeant Vasselian, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2013.

This popular 5K road race, produced by Boston-based Conventures, Inc., is held to raise awareness for the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.

Sgt. Daniel Vasselian was killed in action on Dec. 23, 2013 during Operation Enduring Freedom while assigned to 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He served three combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. His first two deployments were with the 2nd battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment out of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Sgt. Vasselian was posthumously awarded both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with valor.

Exhibition openings and closings in South Boston

There are two galleries in The Distillery, which has really become a thriving artists’ colony on 516 East Second St. The closed shows in Proof Gallery and the main Distillery Gallery were entitled respectively “worlds within worlds” (Philip Fryer, Faith Johnson, Trevor Powers) and “Post Gay?” (The Boston LGTBQIA Artists Alliance BLAA). East Second St.). It is a solo show entitled “Grey Eagle.” Its creator is Mary Ellen Strom, who is originally from Butte, Mont., and is a veteran of countless exhibitions and award ceremonies.

She is perhaps best known in Boston as the director of the Master of Fine Arts Program at the Museum School.

Strom’s “Grey Eagle” exhibition comprises 10 3D works, five of which are metaphors for the personae of various women, who were actually underground miners in Butte. Some of them “struck it rich.” The show is a hands-on, dirty finger nailed, feminist statement, constructed out of the awkwardly graceful forms from a single, large, fallen tree, along with metal mining hardware, fittings and tools. Strom has also put together a Grey Eagle video that is part mining, part fable, part woman’s statement. Be sure to visit “Grey Eagle” – it is visually most striking.

Wednesday evening, April 20, in The Distillery Gallery’s lower level exhibition area. It is entitled “There is a Garden, and It Exists” and is curated

by Victoria Marie Barquin and Pauli Mia. It consists of 18 eclectic works – many of them mixed media creations of various kinds. As its name implies, the show possesses an imaginative, contemplative vibe, and it is small and intimate despite the varied works.

Tynan Community Center hosts April vacation cookout

While children were home from school for April vacation last week, the Tynan Community Center kept many of them happily occupied.

On Thursday afternoon, April 21, the Tynan staff held a wiffle ball tournament at the center’s gym. And while kids were competing in the wiffle ball tournament inside, others

played Frisbee, Cam Jam and other games in the schoolyard area. Staff cooked hot dogs, sausages and hamburgers, and distributed ice cream, chips and drinks to the participants.

The food was donated by the Tynan Council.

The wiffle ball finals pitted Jonathan Walsh, Matt Hogan, and Cormac Lafferty, against Sean Collins, James Arlauskas, and Danny

Potember. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation play and went into extra innings. Walsh, who was named the MVP by the Tynan staff, smashed the winning hit to clinch the title for his squad. The winners will be treated to an upcoming Red Sox game at Fenway Park.

This event lasted for about five hours and more than 50 kids participated. Tynan Administrative Coor-

dinator John Lydon wants to hold such events on an ongoing basis to keep the youngsters active and out of trouble.

“This is the type of event we want to hold on a frequent basis,” Lydon said. “We want to keep the kids busy and let them have fun in a safe atmosphere. I want them to consider the Tynan Community Center their second home.”

OWLL performs staged reading at Franklin Park Zoo

On With Living and Learning (OWLL) brings together underrepresented women and girls with teaching artists and human service professionals. Leadership workshops result in theater performances that focus on social justice issues. These serve as passageways to transforming and developing a community’s future.

OWLL was founded by Fort Point’s Mary Driscoll. A recent performance of “Humanity not

Statistics”, written by Mary and directed by Tasia O. Jones, took place in a novel site – the Tropical Forest Pavilion at the Franklin Park Zoo. This was a staged reading, in collaboration with Sisterhood on the Move and Samuel Hurtado of South Boston en Accion, in memory of Marvin Barros.

Performers included Talieyka Boscana, Janae Meghan Vellere, Abigail Brown Florentino, Ashley Villar, Jacarrea Garraway, Jamilex Vega, and Nayah Bright-Reason.

Frederick Law Olmstead, the father of landscape architecture, designed Marine Park on the South Boston waterfront where the Playground is located. The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) maintains the park and has been a great partner in our efforts. The site has a new toddler’s lot, new equipment and each piece is handicapped accessible. It had not been upgraded for more than 20 years. There is still much more to be done to complete the project, but what a wonderful start. It is now open to the children of the community and beyond for all to enjoy.

Legislation was passed in 2010 naming the site The Michael Joyce Memorial Playground. We wish to thank former Governor Deval Patrick; Congressman Stephen Lynch; former Senator Jack Hart; former Representative and now Mayor Marty Walsh; former Representative Brian Wallace; Representative Kevin Honan; Representative Nick Collins; and Senator Linda Dorcena Forry for all of their support. To the DCR Commissioners we have worked with: Rick Sullivan, Ed Lambert, Jack Murray, and all the staff over the years who have been so cooperative and supported us for so long, we say thank you.

We sold raffle tickets and thank Gerard of Gerard’s in Dorchester for letting us set up at his location and Bobo Connolly of Seapoint Bar and Grill in South Boston for hosting events for the Committee and John Gillespie of Dunkin Donuts. The 5K To Play road race that was supported by many runners and by the corporate support of Suffolk Construction, Century Bank, MacLean Charitable Foundation, John McDonnell and John Flaherty was a huge success. Thank you to Jen Scully for running the Boston Marathon last year to support our efforts.

Michael Joyce was a gift. He never asked a person’s race, color or creed.

He would only say, “How can I help”? He loved his family, faith and many friends. His roots were in Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. His heart was in the City of Boston and his life was at the State House. He taught us the true meaning of life: People helping people. He was 66 years old when he died in 1989.

November 21, 2014, was the Michael Joyce Memorial Playground renovation celebration. Speakers included: Congressman Stephen Lynch; former Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Meave Vallely Bartlett; Mayor Martin Walsh; Senator Linda Dorcena Forry; Representative Nick Collins; and Councilor Bill Linehan. More than 200 family and friends were in attendance.

Johnny Joyce is the Chairman. Other members are Tom Conroy, Martin Conroy, Nuala Connors, Ann McNamara, Esq., Tom Joyce, Mary Joyce Morris, Tom Ridge, Andy Connolly, and Martin Joyce (in memoriam). We came together more 15 years ago to find a place where Michael Joyce would be celebrated. The Joyce Playground is a very special site to remember a very special man.

Youth ambassadors help with Detroit flood relief efforts

“Life changing,” “inspirational,” “sense of accomplishment,” “pride,” and “hope.” These were some of the words and phrases expressed by participants in last week’s community service trip. A quote from one Youth Ambassador sums it up: “Hope drove me, it drove this group, it rode with us to this city, and it settled in the people that we helped.”

eled with their adult chaperones to Detroit, Mich., to assist with flood relief efforts. They worked hard painting, putting up framing and dry wall, sealing basement walls, and tearing out ruined dry wall, and came back to South Boston with a renewed sense of service to others. “The experience of helping others in need was so rewarding that I am considering doing it for the rest of my life,” said one of the young volunteers.

This service trip was sponsored and

coordinated by the South Boston Community Health Center in collaboration with the South Boston Arts Association, and made possible through generous donations from the South Boston community and beyond.

This was the eighth disaster relief trip for the Youth Ambassadors who once again partnered with NECHAMA (a Jewish disaster relief organization) to provide home re-building services for people affected by devastating floods

in Detroit, Mich., in 2014.

It is truly wonderful to see South Boston youth working so hard and donating their entire school vacation to help others!

Southie FC to compete for national soccer cup

When Sean Bakhtiari founded Southie FC in 2012, he hoped that his amateur soccer team would someday compete in the oldest soccer tournament in the country. He just did not anticipate that the team would achieve this in only four years.

Next month, Southie FC will compete for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in a first round game in Revere.

The local soccer club – which this year qualified for this tournament for the first time – is one of just 14 amateur teams competing for the same cup as semi-professional and professional teams. “(We have) accomplished quite a bit in a short amount of time,” Bakhtiari said.

Bakhtiari and Roy Sandeman, both former soccer players for Providence College, continued playing the sport after graduation, but decided to form their own soccer club a few years ago.

“We should start our own team with our friends and run it the way we want,” Bakhtiari said of the cofounders’ motivation for Southie FC. The team is a collection of soccer players, Bakhtiari said, who are their friends, former teammates, and friends of friends. The roster boasts the names of New England natives alongside players from Scotland, Brazil and England.

Southie FC practices anywhere in Boston that fields are available and plays home games at Moakley Stadium in South Boston. But the team will play its May 11 first-round cup game at Harry Della Russo Stadium in Revere. The game is against the Seacoast United Phantoms, a semi-

professional, Premier Development League team from New Hampshire.

This is the 103rd year for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, according to U.S. Soccer, the governing body of soccer in the United States. There are 92 teams competing, which is a record number.

“It’s a tough track but it’s challenging and a fun one,” Sean Bakhtiari, one of the founders of Southie FC, said about the team’s entrance in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. “One of the fun things about this tournament is it allows amateur teams to play,” Bakhtiari said. “Ultimately, you want to win the tournament … but it’s very unlikely.”

The tournament is a single-elimination format. If Southie FC loses on May 11, the team is out of the competition. But if the team wins, the next game would be against the Rochester Rhinos, a Division III, United Soccer League team, in Rochester, N.Y. Bakhtiari said the Rhinos – a farm team for the New England Revolution, a Division I, Major Soccer League team – are the reigning USL champions.

“It’s a tough track but it’s challenging and a fun one,” he said.

The team practices together about once a week, Bakhtiari said, though most of the players also exercise and train on their own time. The team is also competing for the USASA National Amateur Cup, winning a

game in New Jersey earlier this month against the Trenton Devils. In this tournament, Southie FC next plays the Landsdowne Bhoys on May 1.

But the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the one the team is most excited about.

“This is the big one,” Bahktiari said. “We always wanted to be the

best team in Massachusetts … It’s something that all of the players are proud of.”

Southie FC’s game against the Seacoast United Phantoms is scheduled for Wednesday, May 11, at 8 p.m., at Harry Della Russo Stadium (Park Avenue, Revere).

he arrival of spring in South Boston is definitely spun out gradually (and graphically) by the northerly path of the sun, as sunsets become more or less centered upon Broadway for a couple of weeks. And with our main thoroughfares pointing west, accompanied by views from Dorchester Heights, the spring sunsets here are definitely worth a look. A long look. (Just don’t stare; it’s bad for your eyes. Use a polarizing filter, or glance at the setting sun quickly and only occasionally.)

Community members gather to Marion Manor awarded grant learn about proposed Starbucks Non-profit will use funds for training

The crowd outside of 749 East Broadway (northwest corner of its intersection with L Street) early Monday evening was awaiting a meeting with the owner of a proposed new Starbucks at that location. Four Starbucks are located in South Boston now: three on the Waterfront and one at 11 West Broadway by Broadway Station. Ten or more other coffee shops are already located a

few blocks from the L and Broadway intersection.

In general, those gathered were firmly against opening a Starbucks there, due to potential traffic problems, a lack of neighborhood notification, and no perceived need for yet another coffee shop. No license has been granted yet. That’ll tentatively take place in City Hall on the morning of May 4.

State Rep. Nick Collins (D-South Boston) recently announced an Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development Grant awarded to Marion Manor through the Occupational Safety Health Education and Training Program.

The initiative provides Massachusetts companies with financial assistance to prevent occupational injury, illness, and workplace related safety concerns.

Marion Manor is a non-profit nursing facility, and they plan to use these funds to train their employees to deal with aggressive patient behavior, as well as practice safe patient lifting. The grant totals more than $22,000.

Rep. Collins applauded the Executive Office grant and the Marion Manor for the hard work that they

do.

“I want to thank Governor Baker and Secretary Walker for investing in our local businesses and non-profits, especially ones like Marion Manor that provide important services to our most vulnerable citizens” said Rep. Collins. “I am confident that these dollars will be a strategic investment in fostering a safer and more effective work environment for the staff, and treatment environment for the patients.”

Since taking office Rep. Collins has been a strong supporter of increased funding for the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development in the Legislature, helping increase the Office’s funding by about 40 percent since 2013 alone.
