Application period open for BCYF grants Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Boston Centers for Youth & Families have announced the release of the 2016 BCYF Summer Grants RFP. Applicants may apply for a 2016 BCYF Summer Grant of up to $4,000 to support fun, safe, enriching youth programming this summer. These grants will increase both the number and variety of programs serving youth and will ensure that youth across the City have access to activities and opportunities this summer.

The grants range from $2,000 to $4,000 and will support summer programs in Boston neighborhoods. Ages to be served must range from 6-18 and may include young adults up to age 21. Programs must operate between July 5 and Aug. 31. Last year, over half of the 63 programs that were awarded funding had a sports, recreation, fitness or health-related focus, 20 percent of the programs were art-based and the rest offered educational or community and civic engagement opportunities.

SNL’s “Heroin AM” skit was in poor taste What do you think about this?

ast Saturday, April 16, “Saturday Night Live” featured a fake drug commercial for non-drowsy “Heroin AM,” an option for people who want to use heroin and still get things done during the day. In the commercial, SNL guest host and actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus is portrayed as a school bus driver with a young boy and husband.

She gets through the day pumped up on heroin. They mention in the commercial that the medicine is also available in gummy bears, along with “Cocaine PM.” Everything was a big joke.

In a Facebook post, officials from the Dodge County Sheriff’s office in Wisconsin responded to the skit Sunday morning: “The lack of sensitivity for the families of those who have lost loved ones to heroin, and those who are fighting the addiction from this deadly drug was shocking. The skit was distasteful, inappropriate, and irresponsible.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Heroin use has increased across the United States among men and

women, most age groups, and all income levels. Some of the greatest increases occurred in demographic groups with historically low rates of heroin use; women, the privately insured, and people with higher incomes.”

Making jokes about drug problems, even if satirical, is unacceptable and unnecessary.

As heroin use has increased, so have overdoses. The CDC also reported that between 2002 and 2013, heroin overdose deaths nationwide increased 286 percent. Heroin overdoses nearly doubled between 2011 and 2013, and more than 8,200 people died in 2013. The Drug Enforcement Administration said the amount of heroin crossing the United States border with Mexico increased from 500 kilograms to 2000 kilograms in 2013, making heroin more accessible and less expensive. (For those opposed to Donald Trump’s proposed wall, maybe this last statistic should be considered.)

SNL and some viewers thought

this skit was hilarious, but it has also sparked outrage from those who know what it feels like to lose loved ones to heroin overdoses. Some viewed this satirical piece as a good way to point out an enormous problem, and feel those opposing such a skit are way off base. But that’s bull. That’s why we have that oft-used phrase “crossed the line” as ammunition to prove an argument.

SNL’s attempt to make people laugh backfired. Making jokes about drug problems, even if satirical, is unacceptable and unnecessary. Some problems are never funny and should be treated in a serious manner at all times.

How would you feel if your son or a daughter, friend or neighbor, died from a heroin overdose? If you knew someone buried before their time.

I hope SNL finds time this Saturday night to apologize, acknowledge their callousness, and refrain from such stupidity in the future.

His daughters set up an online fundraising campaign to help finance his relocation. More than $15,000 was raised in two months.

“I wouldn’t have been able to move without it,” Cosetta said of the community’s fundraising efforts.

Murphy’s Jewelry is now in a new building on West First Street.

The development – condos with commercial space on the ground level – is owned by Gregg Donovan and Jason Rey. They heard about Murphy’s Jewelry’s need for a new location and remembered that Cosetta had once repaired Rey’s mother’s rosary, Cosetta said. Donovan and Rey offered him a good deal on the rent, he said.

“They helped me out. They came right through,” Cosetta said.

Donovan said he has known Cosetta for most of his life.

“It was available for rent, and we saw (Cosetta’s story) on the news … and we thought, that would be a good way to be helpful to a South Boston business that’s been a staple for a lifetime, really,” Donovan said. “I’m happy to be helpful to a person who has been very good to South Boston.”

Rey declined to be interviewed.

In January, Cosetta received an eviction letter from his East Broadway landlord, he said, leav-

ing Murphy’s with an uncertain future. Nikki Konchack, one of Cosetta’s daughters, very quickly developed a plan, establishing an online fundraiser to help her father move.

“Please help lighten the load of relocating, setting up a new alarm system, new steel grates and so much more by contributing anything that you can, no matter how big or small,” she wrote on the gofundme webpage. “I know he would be way too proud to ask or take anything from anyone so my sister and I are doing it for him.”

“I wouldn’t have been able to move without it,” Billy Cosetta, owner of Murphy’s Jewelry, said of the online community fundraising effort established by his daughters.

Cosetta said he didn’t even learn about this fundraising effort for a few weeks, until a woman stopped by the jewelry store with a check for his fund.

The donations from community members helped him afford this space and renovations to it, he said. Cosetta moved on Saturday, March 26 and opened Tuesday, March 29. (He would have opened that Monday, but Sunday was Easter, as well as the birth of

his grandson.)

After a few weeks at the new location, business is going fairly well – with one exception.

“The only problem I’m having is people are having a little bit of a difficult time finding me,” he said.

The shop is at 403 West 1st St., a one-way block off of Dorchester Street. If a person were to drive down East 1st Street to connect to West 1st Street, he or she would miss this block, which is better accessed by driving down East 2nd Street to Dorchester Street. “(I’ve) got to get people accustomed to the new spot,” he said.

But Murphy has had customers frequenting his new spot. By 10:30 a.m. on Friday, he had already repaired a watch and a rosary. The day before, he fixed three rosaries.

The tradition of repairing rosaries for free precedes Cosetta.

Tom Murphy, the previous owner, passed along this practice to Cosetta, who began working at the jewelry store when he was a young boy. (Cosetta purchased the business from Murphy in 1998.)

“Back in the 60s or 70s, I fixed a pair of rosaries for somebody and didn’t know what to charge them – I was very young – so I asked the owner at the time.

I said, ‘What do I charge them for this?’ He said, ‘Nothing … we don’t charge for fixing rosary beads.’ I said, ‘Why not?’ He said, ‘We just don’t,’” Cosetta said. “So we never charged for fixing rosaries.”

With the online donations came stories of appreciation that show Cosetta’s kindness and assistance

to customers.

“Your dad fixed my broken camera the day before I was leaving for vacation in Aruba. He wouldn’t accept any money and I’ll never forget it!” wrote one commenter.

“Southie’s demographics may have changed, somewhat, but the generous community spirit of South Bostonian’s helping one of its own has not!” wrote another.

The new storefront is still a work in progress – boxes need to be unpacked and the walls are largely bare – but it is not all different from its previous location.

Near Cosetta’s work area, a picture leans against the wall. In it, a younger Cosetta stands with Kevin Pollard, a former Murphy’s Jewelry employee, and Tom Murphy, the previous owner.

Cosetta will soon hang the original Murphy’s Jewelry sign on his new storefront, though it’s not something he ever envisioned doing.

“I’ve been here (in South Boston) for a long time. There’s a lot of stores around Southie that were old time stores, that were just always here that everybody knew. And little by little, they all disappeared. They disappear, they become a pizza parlor, they become a finger nail place, they become something else,” he said.

“And I just always thought I’d be that one guy that was gonna stay where I was, I was gonna stay there forever.”

Patriot’s Day marked with aid from historical society

You might well ask how we observe Patriots Day in South Boston.

It is one of the most important historical dates in Boston’s history – the start of the American Revolution, Paul Revere’s ride, the Lexington Minutemen, and “the shot that was heard around the world” at the Old North Bridge in Concord. This year of 2016 saw the 120th running of the Boston Marathon – world famous and better than ever. The Red Sox played Monday morning (though they lost to the Blue Jays). Lexington, Concord, and all the minuteman towns had huge celebrations on Monday (except for Sudbury’s rock-ribbed traditionalists, who insist upon the actual date of April 19). The swan boats hit the water in the Public Garden for their 140th springtime launch. Boston paraded and placed wreaths on the graves of heroic horsemen William Dawes and Paul Revere.

Southie observes the day more quietly, but it’s no less meaningful. The South Boston Historical Society, led

by President Bob Allison, ably aided and abetted by his hard-working wife Phyllis and his son Phil, put on costumed colonial reenactments at any local school that is interested. This year, the historical society’s players were hosted by the Condon School, South Boston Catholic Academy, Saint John Paul II Academy, South Boston’s EXCEL High School and Saint Peter Academy. Moss Lynch emceed the presentations at these five schools. Any local school is welcome to take part; contact the South Boston Historical Society if you’d like to join the party in 2017.

The costumed players included Bob Allison as Benjamin Franklin, Henry Rodrigues as a Marine on the USS Constitution, Valerie Foxx as colonial poet Phyllis Wheatley, Phil Allison as cannoneer Henry Knox, and this South Boston Online writer as Paul Revere. Most important, the troupe was supported by the fife playing of Doug Quigley and the drumming of Dam Moylan. Students from each school served as patriotic townspeople, getting tri-corner hats in return.

The troupe, quite fittingly, ended their Patriots Day on Dorchester Heights. And Paul Revere did not yell, “the British are coming!” We were all British at that time, so it would have made no sense. He cried, “the Regulars are coming,” or according to something he wrote many years later, “the Regulars are about!”

Or perhaps, “are afoot!” (Revere’s handwriting was not of the best).

Meet Yarielis and Arianna: Two young girls doing well in school and enjoying life

These two girls are doing well in the classroom and are enjoying life to the fullest. They are Yarielis Torres-Barrios and Arianna Lamarche-Castro.

Yarielis, 10, is the daughter of Frances and Carlos. She has a sister, Carlianis and two brothers, Yamil and Janil. And, they have a dog named Princess. Yarielis is in the fifth grade at the Dever School in Dorchester. Her favorite subject is math and someday she hopes to be a middle school math teacher. Her favorite color is blue and her favorite food is pizza.

At home, Yarielis enjoys playing dress-up and playing with her Barbie dolls with her sister. She organizes her shoes, clothing and perfumes, and cleans her room.

Her favorite TV shows are crime dramas. She also loves to draw and read. She’s currently reading

At the Joseph M. Tierney Learning Center on Mercer Street in South Boston, Yarielis attends art classes, does her homework in the computer lab, and plays with friends in the multi-purpose room or outside across the street in Moakley Park. She also enjoys hanging out in the pre-teen lounge or conducting various scientific experiments in enrichment class.

If Yarielis were the president of the United States, she said that she would, “Lower housing and food prices so people can be happy and live a good life...and not have to live in the streets.”

She also said that she wouldn’t live in the White House. It’s too big and not fair that other people live in smaller homes. So she’d

live in a small house too.

Arianna, 9, is the daughter of Yuny and Juan. She has a sister named Brianna. She’s in the third grade at the Boston Renaissance Charter Public School in Hyde Park. Her favorite subject is martial arts and someday she plans on being an artist as well as a professional dancer. Her favorite color is pink and she loves eating pasta.

At home, Arianna watches Nickelodeon, Netflix movies and draws. She likes to read and is currently reading “Emily Windsnap and the Monster from the Deep” by Liz Kessler. Arianna also dances and creates her own dance moves. And, she enjoys playing jump rope outside with friends. In the world of sports, she plays volleyball and basketball at school. At the Tierney Center, she enjoys going to the art room and the computer lab.

If Arianna were in the Oval Office, she said that she would, “ask rich people to help poor people so that the world would be a better place.”

Jose Sotz, a program coordinator at the Tierney Center has nothing but good things to say about these two girls.

“They are both very nice girls,” he said. “Arianna is studious. She loves going to the computer lab.

She’s aware and caring for other people. And Yarielis is so responsible. She’s a girl scout and has a positive outlook on life. She feels positive things happen when you do the right thing and try your best at everything you do.”

Educating for Success: Annual fundraiser supports NDEC

“Educating for Success” is the theme of South Boston’s Notre Dame Education Center spring fundraiser. The guest of honor is Jim Fowkes. The event is Thursday evening, May 8, at The Venezia in the Port Norfolk neighborhood, with its superb dining and stunning views where the Neponset river estuary meets the sea.

This article contains an implied challenge: It must deliver a welcoming message to South Boston’s many newcomers, as well as reminding longtime residents that a muchanticipated event is at hand. The event is the Notre Dame Education Center’s Annual Spring Fundraiser; it takes place Thursday, May 8, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Visit ndecboston.org or call 617-268-1912 for tickets.

The party’s site will be The Venezia Waterfront Restaurant, where that much-overused word “iconic” still applies.

As a tip to you if you are new to South Boston, The Venezia is located on the scenic Neponset River estuary in the Port Norfolk neighborhood of Dorchester. Simply stated, the food there is truly outstanding. Come to the NDEC fundraiser and you’ll want to return to The Venezia on your own.

Another tip to the newcomer: As you read this, the NDEC is making

arrangements with The Venezia for an elegant but casual buffet dinner, featuring food stations and constantly circulating hors d’oeuvres – food service will be essentially continuous during the evening. There is no better way than this kind of dining to get a good, accurate feel for what The Venezia offers. And it’ll allow you to enjoy dinner at your own pace, take a waterfront stroll before sunset, and then return for coffee and dessert. Or to stop in and join the festivities for a drink and hors d’oeuvres on your way home from work – it’s up to you.

During the brief program that evening, the Mary Shaughnessy Inspiration Award will be conferred upon Jim Fowkes. The NDEC is recognizing him for his many achievements and contributions at and to the center’s mission: “The Notre Dame Education Center is committed to providing quality education and support services in a diverse, caring community that empowers adult learners to realize their full potential.”

Jim started as a volunteer tutor 24 years ago. He then taught the Center’s Medical Terminology Course and developed its second, more advanced level last year. He has served on the board of directors since 2013, and is a deeply religious man with many pertinent pursuits.

Durante, Esq., the CEO/executive director of NDEC. She replaced Sr. Joyce Khoury, SND, last June.

Durante is a lawyer – Phi Beta Kappa at Boston College (English) and B.C. Law, and worked at EMC directing their ambassadorial process. She then served as general counsel and special assistant to Richard Egan, former U.S. ambassador to Ireland. Born and brought up in the Boston area, she is visibly caring and enthusiastic about her oversight of the Notre Dame Education Center’s ongoing mission and accomplishments.

Two final notes: At the May 8 NDEC celebration, take a few minutes to get to know the NDEC stu-

dents who’ll be there. There are more than 500 total students enrolled in NDEC from more than 40 countries and ethnic backgrounds. You could find someone already welltrained to assume a position with your enterprise (in medical billing, for example), who’s also bilingual.

Work force readiness and economic self-sufficiency are integral parts of the support services in the NDEC mission.

The second note: There’ll be fun, raffles, a wheel-of-fortune and warm fellowship all during that evening. But be sure to save 15 minutes to enjoy the view from The Venezia. And they have plenty of free parking.

Springtime shoppers stroll along Broadway

T

he Spring Stroll has become another South Boston tradition. It is centered upon the merchants, enterprises and purveyors of refreshments along Broadway.

But as you’ll recall, South Boston Online focused the lead article in our April 7 issue on residential developments along West Broadway. Well, the rapid development of shops and businesses along West Broadway is equally astonishing, so we are focusing on that in this issue.

New businesses range from the South Boston Arts Association’s (the SBAA’s) charming new “Around the Corner” Gallery to a major opening last Thursday: the Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation. Check out their “core values” prominently displayed just inside their door.

The SBAA Gallery is just around the corner from Neatly Nested, a design and furnishings shop that has become a signal success here.

It’s at the corner of E and West Broadway; just ask for Danielle when you stop in.

An increasing number of dining anddrinking establishments now adorn West Broadway – appetizers at Fromage (or a final cup of coffee as a digestif ), divine pasta at Capo, and a very colorful dessert course at Miam Miam Macaronerie. And the Certified Meatball Company, courtesy of Boston Nightlife Ventures, is on its way sometime this summer.

And please note the French atmosphere that is developing at certain points along West Broadway.

Elegant clothing – for all tastes and of all kinds – is increasingly available at places like Jill and Jamie’s Pretty Reckless on Broadway at Perkins Square or Covet, Hanadi Hamzeh’s eclectic consignment shop between E and F Streets on West Broadway. BCYF Tynan happenings The South Boston Summer Collaborative: The purpose of this collaborative is to provide quality summer programs to the youth between the ages of 5 and 14. The South Boston Neighborhood House, BCYF Tynan, BCYF Condon and the South Boston Boy’s and Girl’s club make up this collaborative and are happy to announce registration for summer camp will take place on May 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Fun in the sun at the BCYF Tynan will run from July 5 to Aug. 19. The program is for ages 7 to 13. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. This is an on-site program which includes a variety of activities, such as sports, games, arts & crafts, education, swimming, cultural projects, special events and day trips.

Boston Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the BCYF Tynan are providing golf lessons to the community. We are in the third week of a six week program. Each Wednesday (6 p.m.) the golf pros take a class of 30 youth (which at the moment is full) and teaches them the fundamentals of the game. At 7 p.m., they repeat the same for 16 and up. We do have room for this age bracket. If inter-

ested, just show up at 7 p.m. There is no fee.

Girls Strength & Conditioning program: The BCYF Tynan Council is offering a free eight week fitness program for girls 13 to 19. This program takes place in the gym at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays. Slots are still available.

Instructional basketball: The athletic staff has four stations of basketball fundamentals going on from 3 to 5 p.m. in the gym on Tuesdays. We also have a development league for ages 8 to 11 on Fridays at 3 p.m.

Teen wiffleball: The warm weather is approaching and with that in Southie comes wiffleball. Tuesday nights starting at 6 p.m., the yellow bats will be out, so please stop by and play some wiffleball. During school vacation on Thursday April 21, we will be hosting a wiffleball 3 on 3 tournament (shirts included) along with a cookout for all. Now is the time to get your practice in.

Complete after school time: The Council after school program is going well with 30 participants getting their homework done daily and enjoying some physical activity in the gym. Our core grant staff and DYE staff are doing a great job!

Volunteer to clean up Parks

Volunteers will meet at Murphy Rink on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to p.m., to help clean the park and beaches along Marine Park and Pleasure Bay to get the summer season off on the right foot.

This event is sponsored by the Department of Conservation and Recreation in conjunction State Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry with State Rep. Nick Collins. All are welcome.

Police make apprehension following foot chase

Shortly after mid-day last Wednesday, April 13, a Boston police officer on foot patrol in the South Bay shopping center encountered a suspected shoplifting incident in the Best Buy store.

A pair of individuals allegedly lifted a set of headphones and ran out of Best Buy. The officer, still

on foot, gave chase.

The chase proceeded out of the shopping center, down Boston Street, and ended on Songin Way between Boston Street and Dorchester Avenue. Meanwhile, the officer giving chase radioed ahead for back-up. Some halfdozen police cars sped through Andrew Square, blue lights flashing, and blockaded the Dorches-

ter Avenue end of Songin Way. One suspect was quickly apprehended. The other tried to worm his way under a parked car to hide. In doing this, he somehow injured his knee and could not walk. He was handcuffed and laid in place, in evident pain, until an EMS vehicle arrived to take him to Boston Medical.

As it happened, Boston Police

Department Capt. John Greland – who until recently commanded South Boston’s Station Six and now works out of BPD Headquarters – was performing staff inspections in the area. He also answered the foot patrol officer’s call and confirmed the above details. It was a massive reaction to an enforcement issue, as well as good police work.

On Sunday, April 17, at the South Shore Sports Complex in Pembroke, the Southie Stars defeated the GT Elite, 63-37, to win the 2016 under 12 HoopRootz Gold Rush tournament title. It was the second consecutive year that the local squad brought home the championship trophy.

In the opening game of the tournament on Saturday at the M-Plex

in Mansfield, the Southie Stars defeated the Central Mass. Shamrocks, 44-33. Eli Motta netted 15 points and hauled down 8 rebounds.

Jake Harrison had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Marc Iannaco scored 14 points, had four assists, and three steals. In the second game of the day at the M-Plex, the Southie Stars cruised to a 48-29 victory against the Commonwealth Gladiators. Giovanni Noel netted 17 points and had 8 rebounds, while

Harrison contributed 10 points and 8 rebounds.

In the semi-final tilt played the next morning at Boston University, the Southie Stars defeated the Bay State Flash, 49-23. Iannaco had 17 points and 5 assists. Eli Motta had 10 points and 10 rebounds. In the championship game played later in the day in Pembroke, the Southie Stars never left any doubt as to their championship fiber. Iannaco was in the zone as he netted 31 points.

Noel had 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Motta had 15 rebounds.

And, Harrison finished with 8 points, 8 assists, 10 steals, and 8 rebounds. Not a bad game for the young hoop warrior.

As far as their coach was concerned, this was a total team effort by the back-to-back HoopRootz tournament champions.

“I’m so proud of these kids,” Marc Iannaco said. “They work hard and

have been focused. They’ve been playing together for a few seasons and their positive outlook is paying off. I don’t have any stars but they’re playing like stars because they’re willing to sacrifice for the team.

They’ve bought into the team concept and that’s why they’re playing so good.”

(The Southie Stars will be holding an intra-squad fundraiser for the four hoop teams in early June.

Young hoop players not playing for the Stars are encouraged to participate in this event. The Southie Stars also intend to announce their second annual Southie Stars “Spirit Award” recipient. This award is given to a young student-athlete who demonstrates school spirit and helps teachers and fellow students in the classroom. Any young student-athlete is eligible to apply for this award.

Last Sunday, the Boston Youth Lacrosse Association boys’ teams opened their season at Moakley Park.

The seventh and eighth grade boys’ team defeated their foe from Braintree, 4-2. The fifth and sixth grade boys’ team defeated Braintree, 5-4, while the third and fourth grade boys’ team battled Braintree to a 3-3 tie.

The first and second grade boys’ team did not play.

The head coach for the seventh and eighth grade boys’ team is Tim Hill.

“We played a hard fought game against Braintree and came out on top,” Hill wrote. “Nolan Callow was in net and had a great game. It was a collective effort in the first game of the season and the boys stepped up big to get key ground balls and played well on man down defense.

“My coaching philosophy is a blue collar work ethic philosophy,” he added. “Hard word as a team beats individual talent any day. Ground balls win games. There are no individuals on the team, the team wins, loses, and functions as a group.”

Hill grew up in Lexington and attended the Fesenden School in Newton from grades five through nine. He played hockey and lacrosse, before going to the Holderness School in Plymouth, N.H., where he was recruited to play lacrosse. He also

played varsity hockey and football at this New Hampshire school. Graduating in 2007 from Holderness, Hill was recruited to play lacrosse at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., and was a member of the college’s inaugural team.

At Fessenden, Hill played attack for five years but transitioned to midfield at Holderness, realizing a newly-found love for taking face-offs and playing both offense and defense. Then at Rollins, Hill was a three-year starter at midfield, taking face-offs and playing offensive midfield. During his junior season, he transitioned positions again, playing long-stick midfield and started some games at defense as well.

Hill has been involved in coaching since 2003. He coached at the Nantucket Sports Camps for three years during the summer months for athletes ages 7 to 14. After graduating from Rollins in 2011, Hill moved back to Boston and has been a head coach for the South Boston Youth Lacrosse program (now the Boston Youth Lacrosse Association) since 2011. He serves on the program’s board of directors. Hill was recently appointed as a liaison to the Boston United Select’s team and also serves on the board of directors for them as well.

On the girls’ side of the ledger, the seventh and eighth grade team defeated Revere, 18-1, and the fifth and sixth grade team lost to Methuen, 13-10.

Replacing our outdated copperbased telecom infrastructure with state-of-the-art fiber will dramatically improve internet connection speeds for both residents and businesses and increased competition will help the city reach its goal of ensuring that every resident has expanded access to broadband. This upgrade will help students, seniors, small businesses, and innovators of all kinds. The bottom line is, it’s going to place Boston at the leading edge of technological firepower, and technological access, now and as we move into the future.

I want to thank Verizon for committing more than $300 million to this investment in the City of Boston. And I want to thank them for committing to a roll-out

that starts in the neighborhoods of Boston where access is needed most.

I knew when I took office over 2 years ago that our city faced a disconnect. Boston is home to some of the brightest minds and best talent. But our infrastructure – the engine that makes innovation possible – lags behind. It’s insufficient for the 21st century leader that we are becoming. So we made fiber a priority. We forged a strong partnership with Verizon. And together we crafted a plan that is fair and practical, yet bold and ambitious.

We’re going to go from lagging behind to leading the pack.

Our first priority was to make this service available all over the city. We’ve been working to extend the innovation economy beyond the Seaport and Downtown, with investments like Wicked Free Wi-Fi in our Main Street districts, and startup support at the Roxbury Innovation Center. Likewise, our

fiber optic rollout will begin, this year, in Dudley Square as well as Dorchester and West Roxbury.

Next we’ll upgrade Hyde Park, Mattapan, greater Roxbury, and Jamaica Plain. The rest of the neighborhoods will follow. By 2022, residents and businesses across the city will be able to benefit from the state-of-the-art fiber optic connection.

Our partnership with Verizon is going to make Boston a smarter and more equitable city right away.

For example, Verizon is donating $100,000 to support a mobile hotspot lending program at the Boston Public Library, bringing free internet access to families who need it the most. In addition, we’ll work together on a range of “smart city” technologies to upgrade the way Boston moves and works.

We’ll start with sensors to improve safety along Mass. Ave., as part of our Vision Zero goal to eliminate fatal crashes. This fiber optic

network will also support improvements to wireless coverage in Boston—so our smartphones and mobile devices always stay connected.

As our fiber network takes shape, the opportunities will only grow.

And the infrastructure will not be static. It will be a platform for embracing – or inventing – whatever comes next.

That’s only fitting for Boston.

We have a proud legacy of punching far above our weight when it comes to innovation. Our revolutionary history encompasses both new ideas and new progress in social equality. This fiber optic network will help ensure we live up to that legacy, with resources that can support our highest aspirations.

And those are dreams we don’t even know about yet. They will come from the newly empowered – and accelerated – imaginations of our students, our entrepreneurs, and our innovators across the city.
