On Monday, approximately 105 members of the L Street Running Club will participate in the 120th Boston Marathon.

Fourteen week of training, which began on Jan. 10, has brought us to this point – our runners are ready to go.

Walsh “Leadership in Recovery” Award; Walsh, himself in recovery and presenter of the award named for him; Andy Ward, director of the South Boston Collaborative, the recovery organization that founded this award; and Jon Cronin, president of the Cronin Group, who hosted this celebration and who is a devoted supporter of recovery efforts and programs. It was an all-star cast.

Cronin opened the program by reflecting back 20 years to the founding of the South Boston Collaborative, in response to the mid-90s wave of drug-related teen suicides. He spoke of Darlene

Sheehan who literally sacrificed her health to get the original collaborative up and running. Walsh, before he presented the award to DeLeo, saluted Cronin for his continual support and praised Ward and his staff for their ongoing efforts to bring hope of recovery to South Boston.

Walsh then presented the recovery award to Speaker DeLeo and mentioned how DeLeo (who isn’t himself in recovery) fought constantly for funds to aid those who were in the grip of addiction.

He emphasized that DeLeo did all of this quietly and without any thought of receiving credit for his efforts, saying of DeLeo, “There’s no better person to receive this

DeLeo ended by stating a bleak fact: He and his office receive more calls to help kids with addiction than he receives to help get them into college. There is still much to be done.

We mentioned the award evening was a two-fold event. At the end of the program, Cronin stepped forward and presented the Collaborative’s Andy Ward with a $25,000 check from the Cronin Group. The guests then took part in a truly celebratory reception, with refreshments served from Remy’s below.

As we said: remarkable people enjoying a remarkable evening.

Honor to run

The 15th Annual Boston Marine Corps Honor Run will be held on Saturday, May 7 in honor of Marine Sergeant Daniel Vasselian of Abington, Mass. More than 1,500 people – including active-duty military, veterans from all branches of armed services, and local law enforcement groups – will gather at South Boston’s Carson Beach to run in honor of Sgt. Vasselian, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2013.

Vasselian was killed in action on Dec. 23, 2013, during Operation Enduring Freedom while assigned to 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

He served three combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sergeant Vasselian was posthumously awarded both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with valor.

The Honor Run will begin at 7 a.m. for number pick-up and onsite registration, followed by a pre-race warm-up assisted by the Marine Corps Cadets. The race will officially start at 9 a.m., with an Awards Ceremony and prizes at the end. As an open event, registration fees are $15 for Active Duty Military, ROTC, Retired Military and JROTC; $35 for pre-registration; and $45 for race day registration. Sr. Maryadele to be honored with service award Please plan to be at John Hancock Financial’s striking fourth floor atrium (601 Congress St. in South Boston’s Seaport District) on Thursday, April 28, 5 to 8:30 p.m. The occasion: the 34th Laboure Spring Reception. Sr. Maryadele Robinson and her three decades devoted to Laboure will be recognized with the 2016 Jack Shaughnessy Service Award. It’ll be an evening of fun and fellowship.

It was an interview very typical of Sr. Maryadele Robinson, the director of South Boston’s Laboure Center, a service site of Catholic Charities. When asked how she felt about receiving this year’s service award, which is named for philanthropist Jack Shaughnessy, she immediately began to talk about how much Jack had done, both for Laboure and for the whole South Boston community. She concluded her impromptu eulogy about Jack by saying, “There would have been no Laboure Center without him.

He stood for integrity, helping others, hard work, his faith, and the power of a person who quietly makes a difference.”

Her comment is quoted here, because it not only shows her innate humility but also accurately describes Sr. Maryadele’s own

approach to her life’s work. She smilingly – but somewhat bashfully – admits to a reluctance to talk about herself, even when she is being deservedly recognized for a lifetime filled with accomplishments. As this interviewer listened to what she said, words and phrases such as “energy,” “laughter,” and “a passion to help” kept coming to mind.

Sr. Maryadele has been a religious sister for 54 years, 39 of those years as a devoted and loved member of the Daughters of Charity. Our own Richard Cardinal Cushing renamed the original Columbus Day Nursery started by the Knights of Columbus in 1907 after Saint Catherine Labouré, a Daughter of Charity, who lived in the 1800s, quietly served the sick and elderly, and is known for the Miraculous Medal.

Sr. Maryadele has been the director of the Laboure Center since 1988. Fifteen years ago, in order to care for her widowed elderly mother while remaining in service at Labouré, Sr. Maryadele continued her vowed life within the Archdiocese of Boston by renewing her vows under Cardinal Sean O’Malley.

One can learn many lessons from Sr. Maryadele. To mention just one example, as she approaches

her 30th year at Laboure, she has begun to take steps to arrange for an orderly succession. Jake Bombard, a native son of South Boston, brings with him several years of experience in various political positions. He has accepted the job of Laboure’s deputy director. Sr. Maryadele spoke of spending the next several months transferring Laboure’s administrative tasks into Jake’s capable hands. Corporate executives and high-level organization officials would be well advised to act as responsibly.

After that, Sister herself plans to remain at Labouré. She’ll become involved in direct service to children, families, and grandparents impacted by the disease of addiction, while continuing to help raise funds to support Laboure pro-

grams. Dylan Thomas’s immortal line comes to mind: “Do not go gentle into that good night.”

But this isn’t the message Sr. Maryadele wants to leave you.

She invites everyone to the spring reception; she promises an evening of fun. Mayor Marty Walsh and Lorrie Higgins are the event’s co-chairs. Cardinal Sean O’Malley will be an honored guest, Tom Tinlin will be the evening’s auctioneer, and Laboure Board Chair Bob Kelly will emcee the reception. If you haven’t been to the John Hancock Atrium, you are in for a breathtaking visual experience of South Boston.

On April 28, come and honor a great person and a great South Bostonian: Sr. Maryadele Robinson.

Opinion: Another voice against the Grand prix of South Boston

The City Point Neighborhood Association held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening. Topics included neighborhood updates, a triathlon presentation, and a report from Boston Police Station C-6, including an introduction of newly appointed District Capt. Joe Boyle.

One key topic at the CPNA meeting concerned the proposed Grand Prix Boston races over this coming Labor Day weekend.

Objections to this event were presented to the CPNA by Larry Bishoff of the Coalition Against IndyCar Boston, a volunteer group with pro bono legal counsel, which was formed to oppose the event.

Terms such as “IndyCar” and Grand Prix have been used fre-

quently to describe this proposed event, but officially it’s entitled “Grand Prix Boston.” That should probably be changed to “Grand Prix South Boston,” since every nut, bolt, skid mark and metal shaving will be on South Boston turf, specifically over a 2.2 mile course on our Waterfront. So South Boston Online will do just that.

CAIB’s objections to Grand Prix South Boston can be summarized in a series of bullet points: • There’ll be a long period of disruptive construction. CAIB claims it will extend over four months beforehand, followed by six weeks of dismantling. Given the absence of necessary permits, it appears that time has already run out on the 2016 Grand Prix South Boston.

• Truck transportation will be

severely disrupted, at least over the times just before, during and after Labor Day – especially trucks headed for Conley Terminal.

Rerouting them onto E Street was proposed.

• Some ramps (TBD) along the Waterfront and leading to major routes will be closed for various periods. Summer Street/Congress Street access will be partially restricted as well, likely affecting the other seaport gateway routes such as A Street.

• Double barriers will channel pedestrian traffic (and potentially, bike traffic) into narrow corridors, both to protect the public from Grand Prix accidents and to prevent crowds of unticketed spectators. “Ugly” and “inconvenient” are words that accurately describe these

barriers.

• Certain residents won’t be able to drive their cars out of and back into parking garages during Labor Day weekend. Access for emergencies is an open, unanswered question as well.

• Since the Convention Center expansion was deferred, the toxic PCB waste areas around Cypher Street still remain. Roadwork over these still lacks the EPA go-ahead; no permit application has been filed.

• Despite claims on “no cost to the taxpayer,” certain amounts of road repair money have been “brought forward” into 2016 to make road repairs and changes.

larger and heavily advertised (but no more striking) exhibition of fashion, “#techstyle,” now being shown at the Museum of Fine Arts. (The MFA’s exhibit opened last month and runs through mid-July.)

The message here is for you to take a pleasant evening spring walk down A Street to Channel Center Way #15, and then take a look at an excellent exhibition. A long look. There’ll be a grand finale to “In the Eye of the Beholder” on Friday, May 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. Don’t miss it – you’ll still have time for a late show or dinner afterwards on the Waterfront.

It is an eclectic exhibition entitled “In the Eye of the Beholder” that opened at Midway Studios (15 Channel Center in South Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood) last week.

There are colorful abstracts, collages and wall installations, all of them worth a more-than-passing glance.

But the most striking part of the overall displays is the uniquely designed fashions – both practical and, well, a bit impractical (to select a word).

St. Brigid Church welcomes Sr. Evelyn back to South Boston On Sunday, April 10, at the 10:30 a.m. family Mass at St. Brigid Church, (at which Fr. Robert Casey, our Pastor, was the celebrant), we welcomed Sr. Evelyn back to South Boston. She is enjoying her time at the Mother house in Nazareth, Ky., but misses her many friends in Boston. We are sure she will be eager to meet many of you during the time she will be visiting. Last year during her visit, at the age 100, she was out and about almost every day.

Amazing! At age 101, which she turned on March 7, it will be no different! Happy belated birthday, Sr. Evelyn!

South Boston runners enter Boston Marathon

T

housands of people will line up in Hopkinton Monday morning for this year’s Boston Marathon. The competitive and historic race attracts runners from across the globe – as well as locals who have the advantage of training on the course.

This year, 64 of the 30,000 Boston Marathon runners call South Boston home. The marathon entrants from this section of the city are first-time runners and veteran athletes, members of charity teams and competitive runners.

What follows are a few of the South Boston runners’ stories. Each entrant has a story and motivation for entering the marathon, and we would love to tell them all, though space limits us from doing so. Read on to learn about a few of the runners before they take to the course Monday.

A training ground for personal goals Dan Drapeau grew up running cross-country in a small town in western Massachusetts, but drifted away from running when he was in college. A few years after resuming the sport, Drapeau, a 31-year-old South Boston resident, is now one of the fastest entrants from South Boston in the 2016 Boston Marathon.

Of the 64 South Boston runners in the marathon, Drapeau – who is running the Boston Marathon for this first time – is at the front of that group of local runners. The Boston Marathon divides its runners into waves, and further into corrals, based on qualifying times. Drapeau is in the first corral of the first wave,

runner No. 954.

Drapeau, who has lived in South Boston for about two and a half years, picked up running again in 2010 and ran a marathon in Maine.

“My competitive juices got going again,” he said.

In 2014, Drapeau finished sixth in the Maine Marathon with a time of 2:46:24. That marathon served as his qualifying race for this year’s Boston Marathon. (Men ages 18 to 34 must complete a marathon in three hours and five minutes to qualify for Boston.)

“I’ve wanted to (run the Boston Marathon) for a while, especially since the terror attacks three years ago,” Drapeau said.

On Marathon Monday in 2013, Drapeau had gone to a Red Sox game with his father. He was at his father’s Back Bay apartment that afternoon, preparing to go for a run, when news of the attacks first broke.

responding to the victims of the marathon bombing.

“Words can’t really describe taking in that scene,” he said.

Drapeau hopes for a finishing time between 2 hours and 33 minutes and 2 hours and 36 minutes. He plans to run the Maine Marathon again this fall and build upon the training he has done for this marathon. He aims to place first in Maine.

“Boston will certainly be a very special race for me,” he said.

Honoring the bombings’ youngest victim – Team MR8 Three years ago, Martin Richard, 8, was killed in the Boston Marathon bombing. The youngest victim of the terror attacks, Martin and his message of peace live on and are especially honored at the marathon.

Team MR8 represents the Martin Richard Foundation, created in 2014 by Martin’s parents Bill and Denise Richard. The team has 66 members participating in the Boston Marathon this year. Two of those runners – Vicky Shen and John Lutz – are from South Boston.

“Being a part of MR8 is unbelievable,” said Shen, 37, a runner with Team MR8 and a member of the foundation’s board of directors.

“Everyone knows why you’re there.”

Shen, who has lived in South Boston for more than a decade, personally knew Martin and became involved with the foundation upon its inception. She is a volunteer

coach with the Youth Enrichment Services track and field program, in which the Richard children participate.

In 2014, Shen ran the Boston Marathon and New York City Marathon with Team MR8. Last year, she ran the Falmouth Road race with the team.

Shen was on the course with her aunt in 2013, about 10 miles from the finish line.

“It was surreal,” she said. “None of us really knew what was going on.”

Like Shen, Lutz, 25, was in the city on the day of the bombings in 2013 and counts that day as his reason for running the marathon with Team MR8.

“I vividly remember feeling helpless sitting in my office 34 floors up watching clouds of smoke pour into the streets by the Boston Marathon finish line,” he wrote in an email.

“About a week later I went for a run to clear my head and I convinced myself that I was going to try and run the Boston Marathon the following year despite only having completed a few 5Ks and turkey trots in my life. I was motivated to give back to the city of Boston and lace up my sneakers and run for those who can’t.”

He started training and hoped to run in the following year’s marathon, but because there were so many people with similar intentions, he had difficulty gaining a bib with a charity team. When he heard about the creation of the Martin Richard Foundation and

its team in 2014, “I immediately applied for a bib, pouring everything I had left into my responses.

A few weeks later I received news that I had been hand selected to run on Team MR8. I was ecstatic!” he wrote.

This is now Lutz’s third year running the Boston Marathon with Team MR8. Over his time with the team, he has raised more than $40,000 for the Martin Richard Foundation.

“Team MR8 has become a second family for me,” Lutz wrote. “I have built lasting friendships with teammates and I’ve challenged myself year after year to improve my running.”

“That first year (the 2014 Boston Marathon), going through the process of training and meeting all of the other people that are part of MR8… for me was very helpful in sort of the healing process,” Shen said.

Shen’s personal goal this year is to raise $7,000 for the foundation – well above her minimum requirement – and the team’s goal is to raise $500,000.

“It’s a second job to train for a marathon, and it’s like a third job to fundraise,” Shen said. “(I’m) confident we’ll be able to hit that half a million mark.”

While running, Shen and Lutz consciously remember Martin Richard and his now well-known message: “No more hurting people.

Peace.”

“When you’re out there with the MR8 jersey, you’re an ambassador for the foundation,” Shen said. “I want to make sure that I can be a good ambassador.”

She takes the time to high-five children along the marathon route and enjoy the day.

“I continue to run for MR8 to honor Martin’s message of peace and create a positive impact in the community,” Lutz said. “Look for the yellow jerseys next Monday!”

First-time charity runner For the third year in a row, the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation has put together a team to run in the Boston Marathon.

Nick Moss, of South Boston, has pledged to raise at least $5,000 on behalf of the BCSF, which aims to extend the reach of the Celtics championship legacy into the community through programs that directly benefit children in need.

This is the first Boston Marathon for Moss and he says hopefully not his last. He is looking to push himself to a new level while supporting a worthy cause.

Running to end strokes Ryan Murphy and Meaghan Condon of South Boston will be amongst thousands this April to run the 120th Boston Marathon. While their eyes will be set on the finish line for the grueling 26.2 miles, the real finish line for Murphy and Condon, who are running as part of Tedy’s Team, led by former New England Patriots linebacker and stroke survivor, Tedy Bruschi, will be an end to stroke. Murphy will be running in honor of both of her grandfathers and her father. Condon is running once again in memory of her father and stroke hero, Patrick.

In July 2015, Murphy’s grandfather, Dale, passed away after years of battling heart disease and the after-

effects of his stroke. After his passing, Murphy knew that there was no better time to challenge herself to run the Boston Marathon and no better team to do it with than Tedy’s Team, which is focused on raising funds and awareness for stroke.

“Despite being an athlete and living a healthy lifestyle, my grandfather suffered his first stroke at a relatively young age, in my presence, on our way home from a Red Sox game,” said Murphy. “I often look back at that day and am reminded that more awareness of the signs and symptoms of a stroke could have changed the outcome.”

While her grandfather’s passing is what pushed Murphy to commit to running this year’s Marathon with Tedy’s Team, it isn’t her only connection to heart disease and stroke. Her paternal grandfather, John, passed away at a young age from heart disease and her father’s health has also been affected by heart disease, including a life-saving multiple bi-pass surgery in August 2009.

“Running the Boston Marathon has been a longtime goal of mine,” Murphy explained.

In October 2009, while training for a 100-mile cycle race, Condon’s father had a fall which lead to him passing away from a stroke a week later at just 56 years-old. Having experienced the devastating effects of stroke firsthand, Condon and her family have made it their mission to raise funds and awareness of stroke to help prevent other families from experiencing something similar.

“My dad was the strongest person I’ve ever known. He always had a smile on his face, always was there to lend a helping hand, and worked hard to help provide a better life for my mom, my two brothers, and myself,” said Condon After Condon’s brother, Nolan, ran the Boston Marathon with Tedy’s Team in 2013 and 2014, Condon decided to do the same. This year, she will be running her second Boston Marathon in memory of her father.

Perry School Rocks: A real ‘Southie time’

It’s fundraising season in South Boston: the time after the St. Patrick’s Day and Evacuation Day festivities are over, and set right in the middle of the so-called gifting season. And these fundraisers are great “Southie times.” You know the motto: “Do well by doing good, and have a great time doing it.” It works.

Well, that was certainly true of the Oliver Hazard Perry School’s fund-

raising party, “Perry School Rocks,” last Saturday. Fortunately, it wasn’t raining (or snowing!) because they raised the roof inside Seapoint’s Banquet Room on Eighth Street. The Perry, a K-8 elementary institution, is the only school in South Boston with a seaside location, they’ll have you know. This fundraiser is for activities such as field trips, as well as more advanced and plentiful art supplies (you know the situation with the BPS’s stock of school sup-

plies – no need to ask).

The high point of the festivities, which the Perry School and its fundraising staff termed highly successful, was the music of Thomas Park, South Boston’s ace cover band.

The band’s axis stretches from lead singer Paul Eastman to back drummer Joe Tobias. They are balanced

by Mike, who doubles on keyboard and guitar, P.D., singer and guitarist, and Billy, a left-handed bassist.

They truly rock. And they’ve been

together for just over 20 years. To top them off, Thomas Park was joined for much of their second set by singer Bill Linehan and guitarist Leo Stapleton.

If this write-up seems to emphasize Thomas Park to a great extent, well, that is intentional. The Perry School likes them as fundraisers and Paul Eastman’s two kids go there as well, so there are strong ties. Try Thomas Park for your own next “Southie time.”

Perry School Shark Shout Out A big shout out to all the organizers, donors and attendees to the very successful Perry School Rocks fundraiser at the Seapoint on Saturday night.

Thomas Park blew the roof off with their soulful ballads, edgy rock and timeless oldies while the more than 200 party-goers boogied the night away. Stuffed baskets overflowing with everything from sports collectibles to fine wines to hotel stays lined the room as the silent auction bids grew with each passing hour. Suffice it to say merry memories (and mucho mula) was made during the wildly successful event!

Boston Youth Lacrosse Association opens season

The 2016 Boston Youth Lacrosse Association began its spring season this past weekend with two girls’ home games at Moakley Park. The fifth and sixth grade and the seventh and eighth grade girls’ team played against Revere and went home with victories.

This association, originally the South Boston Youth Lacrosse League, recently expanded to include youth from all Boston neighborhoods. The association is currently comprised of eight teams. There are four boys’ teams and four girls’ teams broken down by grades from the first through

the eighth grade.

The fifth and sixth grade girls’ team is coached by Katherine Campbell and Amy Matthews. “Lacrosse is growing in Massachusetts,” said coach Lindsay Birch.

“I’ve been part of this program for the past three years,” Birch said, “and it’s been an honor to coach these girls. They work hard at every practice and play hard during every game. As a coach they make me very proud.

“Lacrosse is growing in Massachusetts,” she added. “I think the program is a great way for the youth of Boston to be exposed to

“Our players come from all over the city,” Campbell said. “But many are from South Boston. We have girls ranging from being in their sixth year in the program down to brand new players to the sport.

“We defeated Revere 8-0 but Revere’s program is in its infancy,”

Campbell added. “The girls all played wonderfully due to great pre-season practices during the last month.

“Our goals are to have fun first and foremost,” she concluded, “but also to continue to build each girl’s lacrosse skills so they will be in a good position should they want to play in high school and beyond.”

The season just started, so any interested perspective players who are in the specified age groups should bostonyouthlacrosse.org for more information, or show up for a practice. Practices for all teams are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon at Moakley Park.

New commanding officer named to local police district

Each of the Boston Police Department’s stations hold regular meetings with local media and representatives of the various civic associations. These are called Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC) meetings. South Boston’s station C-6 is no exception; the most recent NAC Meeting took place on Tuesday, April 6.

The headline item was the succession of BPD Capt. Joseph Boyle to command Station C-6, replacing Capt. John Greland, who has been assigned to BPD Headquarters. Boyle is a comparatively young looking commander, who speaks in a quiet manner, but he is clearly

in charge. He has 22 years on the force, much of it spent on assignments downtown and in Mattapan.

He also worked for four years here in South Boston. Welcome back to South Boston, Capt. Boyle.

Among the more notable items that came up was a fire that was set at Fifth Street Playground. The suspected firebugs are known and could be in considerable trouble for arson. Rock-throwing incidents were reported on by Det. Sgt. Kenny O’Brien, along with an individual accosting people along F Street. Other topics included difficulties with traffic on A Street, and the impact of the proposed Grand Prix South Boston races over Labor Day.

Meet four CYO hoop champions These Saint Vincent’s players had a tremendous season

The Saint Vincent’s CYO seventh and eighth grade boys’ travel team is the 2016 CYO Vicariate and State Champions. Four of those players are Walter Steele, Luis Rodriguez, Edilson Pinto and Emmanuel Disla.

Walter Steele is the son of Walter and Beth Steele. He’s in the eighth grade at the UP Academy Charter School of Boston, the former Gavin Middle School on Dorchester Street.

His favorite subject is math and he’s a straight A student. He hopes to attend Duke University and plans on being a teacher.

In addition to his CYO team winning two titles, Walter’s school team won the city charter school championship. This year in a school game, he netted 23 points and hauled down 16 rebounds. Last season in a CYO Vicariate tournament game, Walter had 16 blocked shots against Saint Agatha’s of Milton.

“His progression this season was unbelievable,” said Saint Vincent’s coach Billy Allen. “Walter never complains and works hard on the court even when he’s getting knocked around and not getting any calls from the game officials. His ability to protect the rim and alter shots while grabbing rebounds is something to see.

Even though they don’t have MVPs in the CYO Vicariate Tournament, players and coaches have approached me and told me Walter deserves such recognition.”

Luis Rodriguez is the son Flordeliz Rodriguez. He’s in the eighth grade at

UP Academy. His favorite subject is math and he’s an honor roll student.

He hopes to attend either UConn or the University of Michigan and plans on being an accountant.

Luis played with Steele on the UP Academy team, which recently won the city charter school championship. Luis was the MVP of the charter school’s tournament. And although he’s a first year player for Saint Vincent’s, he has already taken on a crucial role on the court for the team and is a role model and mentor for the younger players in this program.

“Although he’s new to us, we depend on him to run our plays,” Allen said.

“He’s a knock down shooter who works hard to get better every time he steps onto the court.

“Luis also helps the younger players,” Allen said. “He shows them basketball drills and how they can improve their game. He’s a smart player with a big heart.”

Edilson Pinto is the son of Adilson Gomes. He’s in the seventh grade at the Dearborn Middle School on Greenville Street near Dudley Square.

He’s doing well in school and enjoys math class. He hopes to attend UConn and be an engineer someday.

This is his first year playing basketball but he loves the game and the new friends he’s made on the team.

“I first met Edilson at the Condon (Community Center) when he was swimming in the pool and staying busy in the computer lab,” said Allen.

“I got him to play for the team so he’d get involved in hoop and make so new friends. And it worked.”

The University of Massachusetts Boston invites the public to its annual community meeting to learn about the latest happenings at Boston’s public research university, from academic programs and community partnerships to campus improvements and future plans.

Emmanuel Disla is the son of Carmen Ramos and Franklin Disla.

He’s in the eighth grade at the Boston Collegiate Charter School in Dorchester. He’s also an honor roll student and loves going to his writing class. He hopes to attend Boston College and become a teacher.

“He’s our defensive specialist,” Allen said. “He’s scrappy and has a nose for the ball, always getting to and diving for loose balls on the court. He’s one of the leaders on the team. Makes all the players comfortable no matter what their skill level is … and he leads by example.”

Saint Vincent’s basketball team wins vicariate, state tournaments

The Saint Vincent’s seventh and eighth grade boys’ travel team recently captured the 2016 CYO Vicariate and State Tournament Championships.

The team won the CYO Vicariate crown on Sunday, Feb. 28, at Saint Agatha’s gym in Milton, when the team defeated Saint Agatha’s in their home gym by six points.

In the CYO state tournament, Saint Vincent’s defeated Saint John’s of Swampscott at Malden Catholic, 46-36. Next up was Saint Mary’s of Winchester. The game was played at Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury, and Saint Vincent’s cruised to a 72-31 victory.

On Sunday, March 20, the championship game was held at Catholic Memorial. Saint Vincent’s eked out a hard fought 80-76 victory in double overtime against Saint Leonard’s of

the North End. This was the third Vicariate and second state title for this team in recent history.

The team subsequently competed in the New England CYO Tournament in Stratford, Conn. on April 2 and 3. In the opening round, the team defeated Saint John’s of Norwich, Conn., in overtime, 48-43.

Saint Vincent’s fell behind early in the game, but battled back to realize a 20-17 lead at the half. With less than a minute to play, Saint Vincent’s trailed by four points. Then Deijon Resende took over. He tied the game with two made free throws and a basket forcing the game into OT. He opened up the overtime period with a deep three pointer and made four more free throws to seal the game.

He finished with 21 points, was 10 for 13 from the free throw line, and had double-digit rebounds. Unfortunately the team lost to Saint Pius X of

Manchester, N.H., in the semi-finals.

“Saint Vincent’s only had eight players available,” said former local hoop coach, Joe Kelly, who took the long ride to Connecticut to watch the local kids play. “They won the opening game in OT in thrilling fashion but eventually lost in the second round. They represented their parish and the community with pride.”

Saint Vincent’s coach Billy Allen reinforced that sentiment and is indeed proud of everything his team accomplished this season.

“I took over this season after Joey Curran coached them for more than several years,” Allen said. “They had a goal to win the CYO Vicariate and

State titles and play in the New England tournament. And they accomplished their goals. They’ve gone further than any other Saint’s Vincent’s team has ever gone in the CYO circuit and they’re proud of that.

Saint Vincent’s’ coaches and the staff at the Condon Community Center are happy for these kids.

“My proudest moment came in the New England tournament game in which we lost,” he said. “We were shorthanded due to injuries but the whole team played well. The kids were disappointed but not angry.

They supported each other and didn’t play the blame game. It was a great sign of maturity for kids of their age.”

South Boston Catholic Academy students explore tide pools On March 31, the early childhood students at South Boston Catholic Academy had a visit from the New England Aquarium’s “Tide Pools Alive” Program. Michael from the New England Aquarium told us about how tide pools are formed and brought some of the small sea animals that are found in tide pools.

During this visit, the children were able to look, touch and explore animals that live in a tide pool. The children also had the opportunity to dress up in costumes provided through the program and act out what it is like to live in such an ecosystem. We want to thank Michael and the New England Aquarium for such a fun and informative visit!

Together the preschool and K1 programs are continuously working on enhancing the curriculum to the children’s interests and making connections to the world around them.

Obituary Margaret (Peg McCole) Reardon Margaret G. “Peg” ‘McCole’ Reardon, 90, of Essex Jct., VT, widow of William Edward Reardon Jr., entered into eternal peace on Friday April 8, 2016 surrounded by her loving family.

One of eight children, she was born and raised in South Boston.

She was a graduate of Nazareth High School in City Point.

She had lived in Vermont for the past 43 years where she raised her family. Peg was a communicant of Holy Family Parish in Essex Junction.

A caregiver by nature, she was a longtime volunteer with the VT VNA, Meals on Wheels, and the Vermont Respite House. She was a talented seamstress, quilter, and baker.

Peg was an avid reader and loved spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her eight children, Paul J. Reardon and his wife Karen of Williston, VT, Susan Fay of McLean, VA, Kathleen Desmarais and her husband Thomas of Snohomish, WA, Maureen Bernard and her husband Ret. Col. Steven Bernard of Summerville, SC, William E. Reardon and his wife Susan of York, PA, Patrick G. Reardon of Vashon, WA, Brian J. Reardon of South Boston, MA, and Mary Mercik and her husband Steven of

Enfield, CT; two brothers, Daniel McCole of South Boston, Robert McCole and his wife Sally of Quincy, MA; 14 grandchildren; one great grandchild, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband Bill, Peg was predeceased by four brothers, John J., Thomas P., Philip J. and Michael Leo McCole, as well as a sister, Mary Ann Bergin.

There will be no visiting hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 18, 2016 at 10:30am at Holy Family Church in Essex Jct. VT with a reception following in the parish hall.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at 9:30 at St. Brigid Church in South Boston.

April 15 permanently named ‘One Boston Day’ Mayor Martin J. Walsh issued a proclamation on Monday permanently designating April 15 as “One Boston Day.” Last year marked the beginning of this new annual Boston tradition that serves as an opportunity to celebrate the resiliency, generosity, and strength demonstrated by the people of Boston and those around the world in response to the tragedy of April 15, 2013.
