West Broadway is revitalized as ‘Big Broadway’

Back in the day – even in the 1990s when South Boston Online first began publishing – West Broadway was known as “Big” Broadway by those who were born and brought up here. But it fell upon hard times; now

it’s back and it’s “big” once again.

If you want peace, prepare for war

merica is definitely in retreat on the world stage due to the fact that President Barrack Obama does not believe in American exceptionalism and lacks the willpower to defend red lines in the sand. Those on opposite sides of the aisle in Washington present contrary views about the present state of our military preparedness. It’s tough to tell who is telling the truth about who supports or is against military cuts; they point the finger at each other. Clearly, a diminished military and the inability of our current president to act when necessary isn’t in our best national interest.

Increased international turmoil is linked with America’s “failure of will.”

Our enemies see our inaction as a sign of weakness, that America does not have the will to play a leadership role. After we pulled out of Iraq, we left a vacuum and ISIS is filling it with bloodshed. In March 2015, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, called for “Death to America.” North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has threatened to “settle accounts” with America while posing near a chart which appeared to map out missile strikes against American cities.

The Chinese are building islands

in the South China Sea as part of their land reclamation project and have moved military units there. The Soviets took over Crimea and the West looked on. They’re building up military forces in the territory it owns in the Arctic. Russian military flights outside of Russian airspace have reached levels not seen since the Cold War. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) which covers Alaska’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) – an area extending 200 miles beyond the state’s sovereign

administration from $752 million in 1932 to $531 million in 1934.

When World War II began, America was completely unprepared to wage war. The army was smaller than Portugal’s, ranking 16th in the world.

We had 185,000 men in the army.

Meanwhile, the Japanese Empire and Nazi Germany were modernizing and expanding their armed forces. They would quickly evolve into military juggernauts even though Germany was expressly forbidden to expand its military forces as stipulated in the

What bothers NORAD officials is not the slight increase in such flights but the modernization of the Soviet aircraft.

Meanwhile Obama attends summits on climate control, indifferent to hostilities around the world, considering them non-existential threats.

One classic example of unpreparedness, one of miscalculation, dates back to the 1930s. As Franklin Delano Roosevelt increased government spending in virtually every other facet of American life, he slashed defense spending from the beginning of his

Versailles Treaty after World War I. As a consequence, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941 because the majority of leaders in Japan thought we were weak, didn’t have the stomach for war. And Nazi dictator Adolph Hitler didn’t even blink when he subsequently declared war on America. He too thought America was an easy target to be easily defeated. Luckily they were wrong.

Awakening the “sleeping giant” was a grave mistake.

The military should not be viewed, like the Obama Administration does, as a social experiment in political correctness. We shouldn’t have women

in combat positions because it’s unfair to them and because the argument of gender neutrality is pure bull crap.

And every opportunity we have we need to tell our military that they are an integral part of this country, that they are appreciated, loved, and that we depend upon them for our very survival in this currently unstable world in which we find ourselves.

We need a strong military to keep us safe and defend us from those who want to destroy us. They are our warriors. We need our military to be prepared. We need them to be virtually unbeatable in battle. We need them to have the best equipment, technology, and weapons. We need them to be able to effectively fight in more than one theater like they did in World War II. We need them to serve notice to the world that we’re always ready to defend the Homeland as well as to defend our national interests abroad.

Defenders of current defense cuts say we still spend more on our military than anyone else in the world. But we are simply not just one nation, not a regional power, but the hope of mankind to keep democracy alive and the flames of freedom blowing in the wind.

Because if we don’t, nobody else will. Just watch the news. I think you’ll catch my drift.

City’s street hockey tournament will be during April vacation Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting the 2016 Mayor’s Cup Street Hockey Tournament over the April public school vacation week on April 19, 20 and 22.

“Boston is a hockey town and we are pleased to be able to offer our young players Mayor’s Cup tournaments in both street hockey and our annual winter classic on the ice,” Mayor Walsh said.

Teams will compete in two regions in Mite (ages 7 to 8) and Squirt (ages 9 to 10) divisions.

Please note that pre-registration for teams is required with a limit of eight teams per regional division.

Region 1 playoffs will take place Tuesday, April 19, at Fallon Field at 910 South St. in Roslindale.

Region 2 playoffs will take place April 20 at Garvey Playground located at 340 Neponset Avenue in Dorchester. Winning teams will meet for the finals at Ryan Playground, located at 74 Alford St. in Charlestown, on Friday, April 22.

When walking up the left side of West Broadway from Broadway Station, the first and largest area being developed is at the intersection with B Street, in front of the huge gray completed structure on B that now has units advertised for sale. Demolition is complete and excavation has begun on three new projects at that corner, totaling 62 residential units and a couple of street level commercial/restaurant spaces.

The construction extends from 150 to 170 West Broadway, with the project in the middle facing out from 135 Athens St. A block further on, there is a vacant lot (Christmas trees were

once sold there), which extends from 206 to 212 West Broadway.

That’s the site of an affordable housing project called “206 West” by the South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation and Caritas Communities, Inc., featuring 16 units that are “affordable, transitoriented” (no cars), along with a coffee shop at street level that will likely be occupied by a branch of Cranberry Café. Permits are in place and completion is slated for 2017.

St. George, an Albanian Orthodox Church, was sited at 410 West Broadway until it was destroyed by

fire. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but it left a space once occupied by a striking building. The project on this site is at the proposal stage; the Boston Redevelopment Authority has held a so-called Article 80 community meeting locally. While entitled “mixed use,” this project is mostly condos (24) and parking spaces (28). One commercial/retail space is planned at street level.

At 480-482 West Broadway on the northwest corner of Perkins Square, Adams & Morancy, P.C. is proposing a five-story building with 18 condos, 21 parking slots and street level commercial space. It will extend from Santander Bank around the corner to STATS. Perkins Supply, Schubert’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, and the parking lot next to STATS will be displaced. This project just underwent a BRA Article 80 community meeting; the architect’s drawing featured a novel design.

Schubert’s and Dunkin’ Donut’s form a key Perkins Square gathering point, so we hope they both can find another location convenient to Perkins Square.

These projects total nearly 100 new residences, plus a half-dozen dining/ retail/commercial establishments.

Gourmands gather for Taste of South Boston Twenty-nine restaurants and vendors provided food and drink galore.

It bordered on the impossible to make one’s way to every establishment’s table and consume the generous samples of their wares. Perhaps as many as 400 honored guests – all of them gourmands – showed up at Sunday’s 14th Annual Taste of South Boston, which benefits the South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation. Taste was held, as usual, in the Plaza Ballroom at the Seaport Hotel. Advance ticket sales amounted to more than 260; a number more showed up at the door to buy more tickets. The festivities lasted from 6 to 9 p.m.

the event’s emcee. Al’s Liquor provided elegant wine tasting; Harpoon Brewery put out a beer-sampling table. Vibrant Event Productions assembled the gala. As many as 50 donors added to the fun, with raffles and a silent auction.

But enough numbers. The impact of this year’s Taste consisted of an enthusiastic, upbeat crowd full of non-stop light conversation and high spirits. The program was commendably brief: Board President Bob Monahan and a smiling Donna

Brown, the executive director of the SBNDC, thanked the attendees profusely for the evening’s success.

There were sumptuous gourmet offerings for every taste – no pun intended. So many that all this writer can do is list a few personal favorites – the clam/oyster chowder from No Name, Porto Bello’s lobster ravioli, and the unique red velvet cake by Sweet Tooth.

They’ll all be back next year, so mark your 2017 calendar right now, if you missed the 2016 fete.

“It’s been a whirlwind, honestly,” he said Thursday afternoon, holding a sample of Jetty, a dry hop sour ale that had just been released that day.

The brewery began brewing beer around Thanksgiving, opened Dec. 11, and started shipping beer the first week in January. The brewing company has large quantities of two beers – Candlepin and Keeper – on the market, as well as a number of other beers that are available only at the brewery.

“It’s been kind of a tailspin, honestly – in a good sense,” he said.

Castle Island Brewing Company is located about 20 miles from its namesake, Castle Island in South Boston, but that was not without effort from Romanow to keep it in the city.

“I looked for space for about two years, and I turned over every single rock in Southie, and nothing had anything remotely like this,” he said.

Last March, Romanow signed the lease for the former janitorial supply warehouse and began construction on the brew house area in September. Romanow and his business partner, Matt DeLuca, had a detailed checklist of requirements for a brewery space. Nothing in South Boston had all that this expansive building with 5,000 square feet of outdoor space had.

“The thing is for anyone who’s lived in Southie for more than two or three years, they know that change Southie is undergoing and they’re not shocked when they hear that we can’t build a brewery in Southie. That’s not a surprise.

So people are realistic about the fact that we want to maintain that branding but not brew it there,” Romanow said. “(Consumers) love the beer, they love that we can still maintain a bit of a South Boston identity while brewing down in Norwood.”

everything we do. It’s become our internal philosophy.”

Castle Island Brewing Company has taken its new philosophy seriously and will not let any imperfect beer leave the brewery. Thousands of gallons of beer that the staff was not proud of have been dumped, Romanow said.

“There’s nothing worse,” he said.

“But the way the industry is these days, you get one shot. And if people try your beer, and they don’t like it, good luck, because they’re not coming back. We feel fortunate

“(Consumers) love the beer, they love that we can still maintain a bit of a South Boston identity while brewing down in Norwood,”said Adam Romanow, founder and president of Castle Island Brewing Co. Aside from the detailed list of necessities a building needs to support a brew house, this Norwood facility had a unique detail hanging high over a door in the warehouse that persuaded Romanow and DeLuca to sign a 10-year lease here.

“That sign isn’t clever marketing. … That was here,” Romanow said.

“When I was walking around with Matt (DeLuca), our head brewer, kind of looking at the space, just running down that checklist like ‘yes, yes, yes,’ and we saw that sign and it just kind of felt like divine providence. We’re like, ‘all right, this is gonna be home.’ And that’s really kind of infused its way into

Romanow and others know that consumers have an abundance of local beer options. There are more than 70 breweries open to the public, according to a state spokesperson, and the Massachusetts Brewers Guild reports there are more than 115 brewing licenses – up from 34 licenses in 2007.

Though it’s been only a few months of business for Castle Island Brewing Company, the company’s philosophy and high standard seem to be working thus far.

“There’s always something going on,” Romanow said Thursday, hours before he headed to Hing-

ham for the South Shore Beer Festival.

Unlike finding a space for the company, the name came very easily to Romanow.

“It’s my favorite space in the city, hands down,” he said. “I felt like, ‘yeah, this has to be the name.’

I was stunned to find out it was available. … I was really surprised there wasn’t a Sam Adams Castle Island Ale or something like that.”

Many of the beers have New England related names as well, such as Causeway, Castle Island’s double IPA. “People are going bananas for it.

People love double IPAs, there’s no secret there,” he said. “And for us to brew local, New England style double IPA with a popular hop and name it after Causeway, and the colors are very much a Bruins reference, they’re black and gold, people just kind of go nuts for this stuff.”

And it’s as simple as that: Castle Island Brewing Company just wants people to enjoy their beers.

“We’re just trying to make a good, honest product that’s super high quality but regularly available and reasonably priced. You don’t have to wait in line for 10 hours in the freezing cold to get a bottle,” Romanow said. “We’re all about having a good time.”

GE to donate $50 million to local community

General Electric’s headquarters relocation to Boston was pitched by local elected officials and GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt as a mutually beneficial partnership for the company and for the area that it will soon make its new home.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Immelt publicly spoke about GE’s upcoming move to Boston on Monday afternoon at a “move celebration” and press conference downtown, the same day that GE announced it will donate $50 million to the community.

This was the first time that these parties officially gathered for a press conference about the details of GE’s move since the company announced the location of its selected South Boston site last month.

“We know this is going to be good for GE, we also want it to be good for Boston,” Immelt said Monday, addressing GE employees, local elected officials, guests and members of the media.

GE – which in late March said that it chose a Fort Point site for its headquarters – announced $50 million in “philanthropic commitments” from the GE Foundation to the community over the next five years. The largest designation from that amount – $25 million – will go to Boston Public Schools; $15 million will be directed to “expanding capacity at community health centers and increasing training for specialty care” and $10 million to “building a diverse workforce population in STEM and health care fields in Boston and surrounding areas,” according to a statement from the company.

“Investing in the community through philanthropy has always been a big part of how GE has done things,” Immelt said.

GE said in its statement that it will reach 100 percent of BPS high school students thought “career labs, computer science courses, and high school design experience to prepare tomorrow’s workforce.”

the mayor, figure out what’s the best way to develop that,” Immelt said.

Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang was one of the many officials in attendance Monday, as well locals including Boston Police Department Commissioner William B. Evans and Boston City Councilors Billy Linehan and Michael Flaherty.

In January, GE announced it had selected Boston for its new headquarters. The company will move into a temporary location in South Boston this summer, and will complete the move to its headquarters on Necco Way in Fort Point by 2018. In Boston, GE will have 800 employees and will create 4,000 new jobs – some temporary construction, some permanent – over

“With GE’s help, we’re going to help reinvent vocational education for the 21st century. And when I say that, I don’t mean in Boston…

I’m talking across the United States of America.”

GE currently has its headquarters in Hartford, Conn., but will begin moving to Boston this year.

“We plan on having it so it can interface with the local entrepreneurial crowd, that there’s really a kind of walk in type attitude,” he said. “First and foremost, this is about competitiveness and economics, and we’re here, we’re here to win, we’re here to play.

“We like Boston first and foremost, because you’re in the heart of the academic intellect of the world,” he said. “The other thing

I like about Boston is, you have a chip on your shoulder. I think that’s an awesome thing. It’s good for companies; you never feel like you’re quite where you want to be.

I love that.”

Much of the press conference was celebratory, with Immelt, Walsh and Baker praising the benefits that are to come from GE’s infusion into the city and region, but some criticism did arise. Outside of the event at 60 State St., a group protested the city’s deal with GE, which according to the Boston Globe, will get “$25 million in incentives” from the city. Officials defended the tax incentives, saying the benefits of having GE here will surpass the incentives.

“This enhances the growth of the city of Boston, allows us the opportunity to get additional revenue into our city that we otherwise would not have had. Those buildings would have sat there, getting in a very small bit of revenue, probably for the next 10, 15, 20 years,” Walsh said. “There’s an opportunity here bringing in one of the largest companies in the world to invest in our city. The spin off of that for taxes, which will be reinvested in our economy – back into our schools, our police, our fire – you can’t put a figure on that.”

Jonathan DePina, the 2016 New England Golden Gloves Central title champion in the novice lightweight division, is hoping to win some world championship belts and eventually buy a vacation home in a warmer climate.

It’s good to talk to young people who have their entire lives in front of them and are following their dreams. Boxing is a tough profession, yet these two young men from Dorchester are willing to work hard, pay their dues, and hopefully, someday in the near future, see their dreams fulfilled. These two enthusiastic athletes are Jonathan DePina and Brian Lawrence.

Jonathan DePina, 21, is the son of Leo and Gloria Pizarro-DePina.

He has a younger brother, Giovanni and two sisters, Adriana and Naisha.

He attended Madison Park High School and graduated in 2012. He lives in Savin Hill and is currently in the Sheet Metal Workers Local 17 apprentice program, which is located on Adams Street in Dorchester.

When he was younger, Jonathan and his cousins would settle their teenage family differences in his basement. Overall, the fights were of a friendly nature, but occasionally someone would end up with a black eye or a bloody nose. Jonathan’s dad took care of that by bringing him to Peter Welch’s Gym in South Boston

about four years ago. He figured his son might as well put on the gloves and fight there.

“Fighting in my basement is what made me tough,” Jonathan said.

“We argued but it was more like being kids and having fun. But the minute I walked into the gym I fell in love with boxing.”

Last August, in Kansas, Jonathan won the Ringside World Tournament in the lightweight novice division. In February, at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium, he won the New England Golden Gloves Central title in the lightweight novice division. And recently at a Newton venue, he won his first open division fight against accomplished fighter, Marcileno DeBarros, who hails from North Providence, R.I. To top off a good start in 2016, Jonathan, who is half Cape Verdean and half Puerto Rican, was the recent recipient of the Cape Verdean “Man of the Year” award at a ceremony in Dorchester. He was proud that he was recognized by the community for his hard work in the ring.

Local youth discuss drug abuse

A group of 40 young adults gathered at the South Boston Boys & Girls Clubhouse on Tuesday, March 29. They came from a number of youth groups from around South Boston. The topic was drug abuse and the epidemic of overdoses that is raging thorough our community. These young people paid rapt attention to the speakers, who shared their own experiences with drugs, and then took important and intelligent parts in the discussion that followed. The Gavin Foundation’s “Refusal Skills” booklet from their Speakers for Hope was passed out – it’s good!

Brian Lawrence, who is the 2016 Golden Gloves New England middle weight novice division champion, wants to take boxing as far as he can take it.

Like DePina, he is also in the Sheet Metal Workers Local 17 apprentice program.

Taking a brief hiatus from his home, Brian attended Sharon High School for two years where he played varsity basketball and football. He played guard in hoop and was a safety and a wide receiver in football. As a senior in 2013, his football squad won the high school Super Bowl championship against Wayland. The team eked out a 12-3 victory and it was the first time in the school’s history that they won the coveted title.

Brian trained at Lauzon Mixed Martial Arts in Easton before switching over to Welch’s gym, which was much closer to home. He currently fights in the middle weight novice division. Last December, he won the Marciano Tournament of Champions title in Brockton and recently won the New England Golden Gloves novice division championship title in Lowell.

“I like boxing because you compete as an individual,” Brian said.

“I really like basketball and football, but when I’m in the ring I feel calm, in control.”

DePina and Lawrence are both trained by lifelong South Boston resident, Derek Shea. He said they’re both quiet kids, reserved, and simply great young adults from good families. Shea said they work hard every time they enter Peter Welch’s Gym, where they train six to seven days a week. They spar, shadow box, jump rope, and do mitt work. They also do ab work, which includes various calisthenics such as sit-ups and push-ups. Being a boxer isn’t easy.

“All I can say is they’re both great kids,” Shea said. “They have a positive attitude and work hard every time they work out here at the gym.”

Shea feels that DePina and Lawrence have promising futures.

“They’re ready to break out into the open class,” Shea said. “That’s where you find the best fighters who are all in good shape. Many of them are evenly matched so you have some really competitive fights. I’m looking forward to see them fight in the future. They’re gonna be good and are focused on what they need to do to eventually get there.”

Recognizing Hayden Flaherty Ollie Student Spotlight Winner

On a monthly basis, the South Boston Neighborhood House, aka the Ollie, recognizes its youngsters by announcing two “Student Spotlight” winners. These young members are recognized for their good behavior, being kind, caring and considerate, as well as just being super kids overall.

Hayden Flaherty is one of the Ollie student spotlight winners for March.

Hayden, 7, is the daughter of Dennis and Pamela Flaherty. She’s in the first grade at the Dever School in Dorchester. She likes going to math class and someday hopes to be a professional dancer. Her favorite colors are pink, blue and purple, and her favorite foods are cheeseburgers at McDonald’s, pizza, tangerines and apples.

In her leisure time at home, Hayden likes to sleep or watch TV. Her favorite shows are “iCarly,” “Sam & Cat,” and “Full House.” She also practices gymnastics at home; she has taken gymnastic classes for two years and ballet for one year.

At the Ollie, Hayden enjoys arts and

crafts and watching movies on Fridays.

Her favorite one she saw recently was “Goosebumps.” She also likes hanging out with Danielle Chapin, who is an Ollie adult group leader.

Chapin speaks highly of this young girl.

“She’s like a little adult,” said Chapin.

“I think she thinks she’s going to run the Ollie someday and she just might.

Hayden’s caring and always willing to help other kids if they’re crying or sad.

She helps staff while they’re setting up dinner and cleans afterwards. On Sundays, she goes to the South Boston Yacht Club and helps her aunt Cheryl (Flaherty) assist those in the Special Kids Care program. She’s just a sweet kid.”

If Hayden were the president of the United States, she said that she would, “stop littering, make sure kids don’t eat that much candy so they won’t have rotten teeth, make sure kids brush their teeth after every meal, and build playgrounds with ‘bouncy-bounce’ floors so that when kids fall they will bounce back up and won’t be hurt. Their parents will be happy.”

Application period open for Hall of fame scholarships The South Boston Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship Trust Fund announces its program for 2016. The fund will award up to ten (10) $1,500 degree scholarship grants and one (1) non-degree scholarship grant for $1,000. Of the 10 academic grants, one will be funded by Massport, one by the “L” Street Brownies, one by Folan Waterproofing and Construction of Easton in memory of deceased members of the Folan family, one by the South Boston Youth Hockey Association in memory of John Cunniff, one by Sona Nichols in memory of Bob Nichols, and one by the “Bucci-Challenge” charity fund.

Up to four additional grants will be funded by the Hall of Fame Trust Fund. The non-degree grant will be funded by Massport.

The academic grants are for those students who reside in South Boston (02127), will graduate from high school in 2016 or have received a GED certificate since January 2016 and plan to attend a school of advanced education or training in 2016.

Recognizing Thomas Gillis Ollie Student Spotlight Winner

At home, Thomas loves watching TV and playing with his younger brother Gavin. At the Ollie, he does his homework and likes to play with the other kids. He enjoys going to the Ollie and the staff enjoy him being there, too.

“Thomas is a very shy kid,” said Ollie group leader, Danielle Chapin. “He has opened up and has come a long way and now helps out as much as he can. He’s terrific… a really good kid.”

UMass Boston hosts annual breakfast for 30th year

Boston Police Department members were honored guests at the 30th Annual Chancellor’s Community Breakfast in the UMass Boston Campus Center.

UMass Boston has held an annual community breakfast as part of its communications mission since 1987. This year was the 30th such community gathering. It was an upbeat, enjoyable event, which took place in the main dining room of the UMass Boston Campus Center.

Several hundred attendees from all over Boston – especially Dorchester and South Boston – showed up.

Boston from its vantage point on Columbia Point, next to the Kennedy Library and Kennedy Senate Building.

First up in the program was the Paige Academy Drum Troupe, led by well-known local musician Joe Cook.

They gave a stirring performance that elicited a standing ovation. Introductory remarks were made by Philip Carver, the interim director of community relations at UMass Boston, followed by Edward Lambert, vice chancellor for Government Relations and Public Affairs.

James Cassetta is presented with his award for Longstanding Community Commitment and Service by UMass Boston Chancellor J. Keith Motley.

J. Keith Motley, the chancellor of UMass Boston, spoke of many topics. Motley has enormous optimism about the future of UMass Boston on Columbia Point; he is a commanding speaker, a great favorite with the 2016 breakfast audience. He told of the “transformation” that UMass Boston has undergone.

Speaking directly to the crowd, he said, “You gave us life,” referring to the support from Dorchester, South Boston and all of Boston. He mentioned that 75 percent of UMass Boston’s graduates stay in Boston to live and work. Motley drew in his listeners by saying, “thank you for that,” at the end of each of his anecdotes.

Each year, UMass Boston recognizes community activists. Chancellor Motley and Claudina Quinn presented the 2016 Quinn Award for Outstanding Community Leadership to Dorchester’s Pat O’Neill.

She has served as the president of the Ashmont/Adams Neighborhood Association for 12 years, and is an active, hands-on volunteer in fundraisers, neighborhood clean-ups, tree lightings, pumpkin carving, and countless other good works.

Motley went on to confer this year’s Chancellor’s Award on James Cassetta, who has spent more than 40 years helping individuals with disabilities to find gainful employment. He’s the CEO and president of WORK, Inc., which is dedicated to just that purpose. In addition, he is a highly active member of numerous boards of non-profits and community supporters.

Chancellor Motley then delivered closing remarks, including a reference to a partnership with South Boston’s Gavin Foundation. The 2016 30th Annual Community Breakfast at UMass Boston was a memorable event.

April opening for Roza Lyons

A new logo for Roza Lyons has been placed on the signage at 709 East Broadway. It’s punctuated with a line drawing combining a white rose with a lion en passant sinistre. The white rose could symbolize the English House of York, except that “Roza” is the Polish spelling of “rose.” And even though lions are symbols of the English monarchy, Lyon is the name a major city located on the Rhone River in France. Go figure.

Roza Lyons is where the Urban Art Bar used to be (it’s now in Brookline).

Roza Lyons will be a new restaurant and bar. Its website, which is still limited in details, describes Roza Lyons as “a great restaurant and bar featuring

an excellent selection of craft beer & wines & cocktails, healthy sandwiches & salads, and farm-fresh sharable plates.” A sign in its window says it will be “Opening April 2016.” Welcome to South Boston.

The small kitchen and seating area will certainly create a place for good conversation with an intimate feel , especially compared to the ginormous establishments already opened (and still opening) along West Broadway.

Perhaps Roza Lyons will combine the best qualities of a bistro and a trattoria. Let’s hope. (Please be sure the coffee Roza Lyons serves is truly memorable.)

Youth Ambassadors fundraise for trip to Detroit

Did you know that South Boston’s Youth Ambassadors give up their spring break to assist other parts of America in their recovery from natural disasters? They have been to Mississippi, New Orleans and New York. This month, they are going to Detroit. The photo shows a few of the guests at the Youth Ambassadors’ final fundraiser at Lincoln, which completed their efforts to raise money for their hard-working, goodwill trip in a couple of weeks. –Rick Winterson

Collins votes

to approve millions for infrastructure improvements Rep. Nick Collins joined his colleagues in the House of Representatives to pass legislation that includes a $200 million bond authorization for Chapter 90 funding to help municipalities complete road, bridge, and infrastructure improvement projects.

Collins helped secure more than $14.5 million for the City of Boston to be used for infrastructure upgrades.

“This money will help catalyze important improvements to our roads, bridges, and transportation infrastructures,” said Collins. “I am proud to work with my colleagues from the Boston Delegation to help appropriate these funds to enhance the quality of life in our city and our neighborhoods.”

The bill now moves to the Senate for debate.

Southie Connect to play at Hard Rock Cafe Southie Connect, a local band formed in South Boston, will be playing at the Hard Rock Cafe Boston for the first time this Saturday.

“We’re stepping up the ladder,” said Jimmy Donovan, the band’s singer. “We want everybody to show their support by coming.”

The band, which has been together for about two years, has five members: Donovan; Bobby Travis, guitar; Paul Eaton, bass; Phil Beach, harmonica; and Robert Kinsherf, drums.

The band has played at other well recognized venues in the city, Donovan said, such as Copperfield’s Bar and the House of Blues Boston, but this is their first time at the Hard Rock.

“We need support,” Donovan said. “We want to prove we can pack the place.”

The band is one of five acts in the show Saturday. The other musicians, according to the Hard Rock Cafe Boston’s website, are Christopher Lewis, Waves Crashing on Face, Chris Moreno, and

Southie Connect had a float in the St. Patrick’s Day parade on March 20.

South Boston residents may have recently seen Southie Connect, as they had a parade in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade, organized by the Allied War Veteran’s Council. Donovan and Southie Connect thank the veterans for their service and support, with an emphasis on support from the South Boston VFW Post 6536 on Ellery Street.
