Three family-friendly safe areas set up on Parade Day: Dorchester Heights around the Evacuation Day monument, M. Street/Medal of Honor Park, The corner of D Street which TD Bank has volunteered their parking lot for this purpose.
The St. Patrick’s/ Evacuation Day Parade takes place three days from now. It will step off promptly at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, from Broadway Station at the Dorchester Avenue intersection. The Parade route is just under four miles long. It extends along West and East Broadway for almost two miles, turns down P Street onto Fourth Street, and then goes over to Fifth Street at the Tynan School. The route passes along the south arm of Thomas Park, down Telegraph Street to Dorchester Street, and finally ends in

Andrew Square. The Parade will end around 4 p.m. Over 150 units totaling 4,000 participants are scheduled to march. Depending upon the weather, nearly a million spectators might possibly show up.
Mayor Wu, Police Commissioner Cox, and South Boston’s elected officials met with the police organizations who are responsible for 2023 Parade safety. Basically, they were quite optimistic about maintaining order along the Parade route and keeping the anticipated crowds of spectators completely orderly. The MBTA’s Police Superintendent promised safe transit to everyone attending the Parade; officials from the Massachusetts State Police confirmed their role in helping Boston Police on Parade Day.
A special point was made of handling and neutralizing all disruptive groups attending the
parade. Like all of us, they have freedom of speech in America, so we suggest ignoring them –law enforcement officers will see that they “keep the peace”.
Police Commissioner Cox was quoted as saying, “We will not allow public drinking at the Parade. It won’t be tolerated.”
We had a brief, in-person meeting with Commissioner Cox. He responded to our questions by
confirming his plans for Sunday and their expected effect. He was highly confident that the Parade will be a totally safe event. We wish him and his officers maximum success this weekend.
We Also spoke with Parade officials led by Susan McDonough, who is the Commander of the South

Susan and her competent staff assured us that the Parade this year will be focused on the wellbeing of the residents of South Boston, especially those with families and children. The SBAWVC fully realizes that South Boston’s residents are the key people who both permit and
welcome the Parade every year. To this end, Parade officials have created three family-friendly safe areas this year. Dorchester Heights around the Evacuation Day monument is one of these areas. Families and their children can view the Parade from the grass on the Heights – safely and securely. A second familyfriendly area will be located at M Street/Medal of Honor Park. If they want, kids can run and play around the park well away from the busy Parade route on East

South Boston Citizens’ Association President Tom McGrath and the Executive Board has announced the Association’s 2023 recipient of the John W McCormack Award. The 2023 Shamrock Awards will be presented to Michael Donovan for 46 years as Clerk of superior Civil Court, the longest serving official. This award will be presented at the 143rd Annual Evacuation Day Banquet to be held on March 17th, 2023 at the South Boston Convention Center.

“It’s an honor for the Association to recognize Mike for the McCormack Award for his commitment , dedication, professionalism and fairness he brought to the Court System.” Said President Tom McGrath.
This award along with the Shamrock awards will be presented at the Association’s 143rd Annual Evacuation Day Banquet, to be held this Friday evening, March 17th, at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, with a 5:30PM Cocktail hour and a Corned Beef Dinner served at 7:00PM.
A host of special invited Dignitaries are expected to attend this year’s banquet. Curragh’s Fancy will provide the entertainment. McGrath cautioned that tickets are being purchased at a good pace, with so many of South Boston’s most valued community leaders receiving awards. I urge those that are planning to attend to act fast. Broadway. The third familyfriendly area will be on the corner of D Street. TD Bank has been kind enough to volunteer their parking lot for this purpose. In addition, several food trucks will be located near the Parade route on Sunday afternoon.
The SBAWVC has also arranged for 200 portable toilets to be placed along the Parade route, which means there’ll be a nearby “potty” every 150 feet or so available for spectators to use. Not only will this be convenient,
it will also go a long way toward preventing the disgusting abuses of South Boston’s side streets that have occurred all too often during previous Parades. In addition, our discussions with the SBAWVC have convinced us that the 2023 Parade will be very enjoyable (as well as safe!). The Parade’s emphasis will be musical – 17 marching bands and 13 live music floats. So while you are watching the 2023 Parade, please be positive, be safe, and enjoy!

The 2023 Parade Chief Marshal’s Banquet
by Rick Winterson
The celebrations and observances connected with the South Boston “Season” continue, as the St. Patrick’s/ Evacuation Day Parade approaches. Recognition and remembrance of South Boston’s military veterans is the most important underlying theme that leads up to the Parade. The Parade itself has always prominently included veterans in its line of march. In fact, veterans are members of the organization that plans the Parade – the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council (the SBAWVC).
A key veterans’ event took place which was the 2023 Annual Chief Marshal’s Banquet, which is given by the SBAWVC each year. It honored Coleman Nee, a veteran and the Chief Marshal of the 2023 Parade, which steps off at 1 p.m.
next Sunday, March 19. Nee is an eight-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps; he was deployed into action in Iraq and Kuwait. He has continued his involvement in veterans’ affairs as the Secretary of Veterans Services in Massachusetts until 2015, and as National 2nd Jr. VP for Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
More than 200 people attended the Chief Marshal’s Banquet, including Susan McDonough, Commander of the SBAWVC and in overall charge of Sunday’s Parade, and Greg Lally, the newly elected 2023 “Mayor of Southie”. Tommy Lyons, a Marine veteran himself and currently a member of the Governor’s Veterans Advisory Council, served as the Banquet’s Master of Ceremonies. The Banquet actually consisted of an excellent corned-beef and cabbage feast held in the Lithuanian Club Hall on West Broadway.
At the end of the ceremonies, Nee received from Susan McDonough and Tommy Lyons a skillfully created American flag that was hand-crafted from wood – a real work of art. He then
expressed his sincere gratitude for being named 2023 Parade Chief Marshal. Coleman Nee now joins a select line of Parade Chief Marshals that extends all the way back to the first Parade in 1901.

Senior Salute a Huge Success
by Rick Winterson
The Annual Senior Salute was a truly joyful event held in the St. Peter Lithuanian Church Hall on Flaherty Way. Many Seniors came and went; others received take-out food. The Hall itself was jam-packed with more than 200 lunch guests. Every table and chair was occupied.
Over many years, the Senior Salute has become one of South Boston’s most important St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day traditions. It is really one of the high points of our annual South Boston “Season”.
The Senior Salute always brings good cheer; the sound of laughter was non-stop. Seniors went from table to table greeting other Seniors they hadn’t seen
for a while. Irish music, nicely performed live by Al and Brendan Gavaghan’s “Celtic Law”, filled the air. Many of the Seniors wore St. Patrick costumes, most of which were green (of course) –Phyllis Corbitt may have worn the most impressive costume of all.
Station C-6 Capt. Joe Boyle, Community Service Sgt.
Jeremy Fitton, and PO Ayesha Lawton stopped in to say hello to the Seniors. They were joined by BPD Commissioner Michael Cox, who promised that police services and presence would be non-stop in South Boston, up to and during the Parade next Sunday – no problems like last year. South Boston’s “three Toms” – Butler, McGrath, and Tinlin – regaled the crowd with their remarks. Tom Tinlin is on
the Board of the City of Boston Credit Union and the Credit Union was a key supporter of the Senior Salute this year. The entire Butler family sponsored the Senior Salute, and then they volunteered to help out as well. Peggy Woods’ Dancers energetically entertained the crowd. As it ended, John Healey closed the 2023 Senior Salute with “A Mother’s Love”.

Boys & Girls Club Annual St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon
by Rick Winterson
The 47th Annual Saint Patrick’s Day Luncheon, presented by the Edgerley Family Boys & Girls Club of South Boston, took place last Friday noon at the OMNI Boston Hotel in our Seaport District. As the Directors of the Boys & Girls Club on West Sixth Street are happy to tell you,
their yearly luncheon is intended to be a light-hearted affair that has “Comedy” as its dominant note. Well, that comic note actually happened. But also there were other events and occurrences – all of them very positive – that occurred, too. One of them was the date – the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston are celebrating their 130th year. Since 1893, back in our nation’s Victorian years, the Clubs in Boston have been supporting young people, helping them build strong characters and become leaders in their communities. That began over a century ago; the Clubs in Boston are still actively fulfilling that mission.
The Luncheon also spotlighted Brielle Jean as the South Boston Club’s “Youth of the Year”. She’s a lifelong South Boston resident, who attends the Neighborhood House Charter School and has been a Club member for 11 years. During her time in the Club, she has assumed leadership roles in programs like
Keystone, Queer Straight Alliance, and Ready to Work. Brielle also dances, skateboards, and writes creatively. Her remarks during the Luncheon’s Program showed her to be a skilled public speaker as well. Brielle’s ambition is to become an M.D. in pediatrics. She illustrated that by mentioning when she once saw a child who was a burn victim, she immediately thought to herself, “I want to help that kid.”
Gerry Vierbickas served as the Event Chair this year. Fr. Joe White said the invocation. The Luncheon Program was continued under the direction of Master of Ceremonies John Tobin. Executive Director Josh Davis welcomed everyone and wished them a Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Robert Lewis, Jr., the President and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston focused his praises on Pattie McCormick, who was the organizer and hostess of the Luncheon. “Pattie is a legend!”, Lewis proclaimed.
Mayor Wu then proceeded to tell some jokes she had brought to the Luncheon. The chief target of the Mayor’s humor was the MBTA, especially when she said, “The ceiling tile that crashed to the floor in Harvard Station was actually scheduled by the “T” to drop an hour and a half earlier.” Oh, well. All in all, this year’s South Boston Boys & Girls Club Luncheon was an excellent take.

“The Better Beaches program invested more than ever in our community and beaches last year to focus on improving access for people of color, people with disabilities and nonEnglish speakers” said Representative David Biele. “I’m incredibly proud of the Commonwealth’s increased commitment in 2023 so even more people can experience these amazing coastal resources.”
South Boston was a big winner at the 2023 event, raising more than $7,298 for free beach events and programs!

For the first time this year, Save the Harbor also hosted the Shamrock Dash which featured runners warming up with a 1 km race before participating in the splash.
This year’s participants won prizes for biggest fundraiser and best

There are people who are at home in an office and only go outside to get back inside, but Nicole Alfano, a mail carrier for the past seventeen years, is not one of them. Serving the community on a route of six hundred addresses that takes up to six hours to complete, Nicole, at 42, is undaunted by weather, the weight of a bag or city streets.
“I love the South Boston community. There are so many nice people on my route and beyond. I see the same people every day and try to remember all the names on my route,” she said. This is no small goal in a community where she notes that many houses that were single family now have many units, and people move more than in years past. Still, it seems to be a natural fit for this Malden native and UMass Boston graduate.
“I think it all goes back to walking the streets of Cambridge with my Nana when I was a kid. Walking around and being outdoors has always been good for me, and is so much better than being inside,” she said.
Originally thinking of nursing, she was drawn to mail carrying after she finished school, and heard about the benefits of the
It Takes a Community: Nicole Alfano
post office, and so she started at Fort Point from 2005-2014, and has ever since been in South Boston. In addition, she is a marathon runner, and the job is in sync with her belief in using her body in both recreation and vocation.
” I love to run and did the Berlin, Germany Marathon in September, 2021. I also did New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Maine, and am planning some half marathons, and the Run to Remember in the Seaport. My dream is to run Boston, of course, but I don’t have the qualifying time, and to enter otherwise, the fundraising is difficult,” she said.
“The job is a workout, and I usually do it six days a week,” she said, as if it is just one more training regimen. “It is a satisfying job, and sometimes I deliver happy mail, such as college acceptances this time of year. A lot is electronic but still real mail, too.”
The daughter of a firefighter and accountant mother, Nicole is as reliable as she is strong, and is ready for anything. “Of course, the weather gets tough when there’s ice and snow, but you learn how to dress for it, and in the hot and humid times, I stop for extra breaths,” she said.
Nicole worked through the pandemic while many worked
from home. There were more packages being delivered as people ordered online, and the same challenges with weather, and there are always some issues with dogs (and she is a self-described “doglover.”) She has a matter of fact way of talking about the weight she carries, or when a man on a motorized scooter fell and she intervened. It is all a part of being committed to the community.
The summary of her feelings about her job are clearly stated. “I love the outdoors, and I feel appreciated. I would recommend this to anyone who likes to use their body and walk,” she said. Nicole Alfano is unlikely to be tethered to an office as she continues to grace our changing streets. (Carol Masshardt can be reached at carolhardt@ comcast.net)
