Parade Canceled

ayor Martin J. Walsh issued the following statement regarding the 2020 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in South Boston: “In collaboration w it h Congressman Lynch, Councilors Flaherty and Flynn, Senator Collins, Representative Biele, and David Falvey from the South Boston A llied War Veterans Council, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is being cancelled. This

decision is being made out of an abundance of caution to ensure that we are doing what is needed to keep the residents of Boston safe and healthy.

“While the risk in Boston remains low, this situation is changing ver y quick ly and we are closely monitoring any local cases. Our top priority is preventing any new cases, to the best of our ability, and we are paying close attention to guidance from public health off icia ls. We encourage a ll residents to follow preventive measures to avoid illness, such as washing hands and staying home if you are feeling sick, and we will continue to make public any information as this situation develops in Boston.”

Condon’s Runnin’ of the Green

It was not the green fields of County Cork, but, it might as well have been, as the BCYF Condon Community Center youth gleefully participated in this year’s SB Citizens Association Evacuation Day track events. Decked out in their shamrockladen gear, over 75 co-ed members ages 8-15 completed the 40yd dash, Relay

Races, and, as an added bonus - the Patriot Football Accuracy Toss. Thank you to Representative David Biele and Sergeant Gino Provenzano who were on hand as the gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded in each category. More photos on page 10.

Memories will keep St. Patrick’s Day… Ray Flynn is a former mayor of Boston and former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican.

T

he coronavirus might have changed the way we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Boston this year, but it’s not going to force me to forget all the wonderful memories of this special day in my life.

The parade ha s been called off, but my neighbors and the many millions of visitors who spent the special day with us in the past can smile at all the good memories.

I can still see the Boston Police Honor Guard marching up Broadway, our U.S. military men and women just returning home to a heroes’ welcome from combat in Korea or Vietnam, a group of Gold Star Mothers or a young Congressman John F. Kennedy marching up the street.

Those memories and so many others will proudly be remembered and talked about, even if there is no parade going by. We talk about them with old friends whenever we get together.

It’s those good old Evacuation Day-St. Patrick’s Day Parade days that we will never forget. Yes, we will miss cheering on our new heroes and thanking them for their service, or protecting lives and our community from terrible fires this Sunday in South Boston.

But the coronavirus scare will never take away the wonderful memories we all had over these many years in sharing the treasure of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade with our visitors to a place where we are always proud to sing “Southie Is My Home Town.”

So if you are walking around the town and you want to hear a story or two, I know there are many people who would love to talk about the good old days.

As for myself, Kathy, Braeden and I will be attending my favorite St. Patrick’s Day event of all and the way we proudly celebrate our faith and heritage on March 17th.

At noon, many of us will be at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in the South End with people of all backgrounds, led by Cardinal Sean O’Malley and Father Kevin O’Leary, to wish you a Happy St. Patrick’s Day as we celebrate the life of Boston’s patron saint and the home church to the very first Irish Immigrants to America.

We’ll tell you about what these immigrants — maids, laborers and dockworkers — did when they first came to A merica seeking hope and opportunity, and in turn, helped build America, like the other new immigrants you see today.

We don’t need a parade to remind us of what Boston stands for. It’s a city that confronts challenges. It’s a city that helps its own. It’s a city I call home.

St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast Canceled State Senator Nick Collins recently issued the following statement regarding the 2020 St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast: “As Mayor Walsh and Governor Baker continue to take steps to stop the spread of a coronavirus, the decision has been made to cancel this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast.

While I am disappointed we won’t be able to celebrate with the annual St Patrick’s Day Breakfast this year, public health and safety must always be our top priority.”

Given today’s declaration of a State of Emergency, it is clear that this is the proper decision based on the advice of experts and public health officials.”

Tom Tinlin Named 2020 “Champion”

W

hen Tom Tinlin joins you for breakfast, you can be sure that he’ll show up wreathed in smiles and ready to share a laugh (or laughs) with you. That’s just the way Tom is, and the description applies to Tom no matter how early it is in the day – this interview took place while we both were still feeling the effects of that hour

lost to Daylight Savings Time.

Tom is to be deservedly honored with this year’s Joseph “Dodo” Nee “Cha mpion” Award, which will be conferred upon him by the South Boston Neighborhood House (the SBNH) on Friday evening, March 27. The occasion is the SBNH’s Annual Benefit & Auction; the locale will be the elegant Harborview Ballroom at the Seaport World Trade Center. The evening begins at 6 p.m. Please make it a point to be there to congratulate Tom – tickets can be obtained online at Tickets online at www.sbnh.org.

Tom Tinlin is a lifelong resident of South Boston – a true “born-and-brought-upper”.

He and his wife Heather have a home on Fifth Street and they have two children: young Thomas is about to turn 20 and is studying Communications at Westfield State; Grace is 18, and is thinking about studying mechanical engineering when she graduates from Boston Collegiate Charter School.

Along with his high regard for all that the SBNH accomplishes year in and year out, Tom has a (very) long term connection with them. His very first job was at the SBNH, keeping track of attendance among young SBNH members. Next was his work on the TEEN program that basically provided a place for adolescents to go that was social, enjoyable, and best of all, off the streets. Then, Tom worked on the SBNH summer bus program that got young people out to nearby beaches, like those in Scituate. For many of the young SBNH members, this was the first time they had gone beyond South Boston’s borders.

He marvels at all of the countless good works he has seen at the SBNH, founded over a century ago by Olivia James (“Ollie”) and now led by Kathy Lafferty.

Tom mentioned that he was invited to join the SBNH Board by Joseph “Dodo” Nee and he’s now receiving the Nee Award. This led to some poignant reminiscing during our interview about Dodo –

“a friend, a mentor, generous, who constantly told people that it was OK to do the right thing. Always!”

According to Tom, Dodo had the gift of “complete honesty”, and Tom feels humbled to receive an Award named after him.

Another of Tom’s activities includes the nationwide Brain Aneurism Foundation, where he recently assumed the position of Chairman of the Board. Tom suffered from a brain problem that is now completely under control and out of gratitude, he took on a number of efforts, now including Board Chair, to foster the Foundation’s future. And just to vividly illustrate his devotion to community work, Tom is a self-taught auctioneer, who runs auctions for free at fundraisers all over South Boston, and as far away as “Still Waters” in New York City.

We could describe only a few of Tom’s many, many community efforts. Please plan to watch him receive the 2020 Nee Award two weeks from now on March 27. See you there!

SBCA Annual Banquet Cancelled

t was a very difficult decision to cancel the South Boston Citizens’ Association Annual Evacuation Day Banquet based on the advice of Public Health experts and elected leaders.

The event for many years has brought together residents, business leaders and elected officials for a commemorative celebration of the events on March 17, 1776.

As a civic organization, we take seriously the important role we play in the community, and in the spirit of partnership, we want to do everything we can to make sure the award recipients, family and friends along with the people of Boston stay safe and healthy. Please Save the Date of March 12, 2021 where we will honor this years recipients at next years Evacuation Day Banquet.

Tom McGrath has announced the Association’s recipient of the James M. “Jimmy” Kelly/ Margaret “Peg” Flaherty Shamrock Award for Community Service is Bobby McGarrell, for his diligent volunteerism in the community.

“I have known bobby my whole life and he is most deserving of this award. He never hesitates to get involved in something he believes in, especially if it involves the youth in South Boston.” McGrath stated.

Bobby is a graduate of BC High where he was a member of the National Honor Society and received the national Latin Award.

After BC High he attended Bentley college earning a BS in Management, earned the President Scholarship Award, (was at the top of his class) Betta Gamma Sigma. Upon Graduation from Bentley Bobby graduated from Suffolk Law School where he received the Moot Court Award, for practical and in-depth analyses of current legal issues related to trial and appellate practice.

Bobby, is a lifelong resident of South Boston and a Private Attorney practicing family law in Boston, primary area of focus, Care and Protection cases in Boston Juvenile court,

representing children and parents, and working towards reunifying families in the commonwealth that have been displaced by DCF. He has volunteered much of his time to community youth sports organizations and events that make a difference to the families and youth of South Boston.

He has devoted much of his time coaching and fundraising in order to maintain robust and sustainable programs in the community. With the help of other coaches, parents and a focus on player development, the athletes are acquiring the level of skill needed to play at the next level, whether it be travel teams or even High School teams.

Bobby has coached in the community going back to 1988. He has coached in Little League, Babe Ruth, CYO Basketball and South

Boston Youth Hockey. McGrath said “Bobby is not shy to tell you how many Championships he has won in his coaching career, but what is most important to him is working with the children of the community to enjoy the programs that he had as a young studentathlete growing up in South Boston” Bobby is married to Suzanne Ryan and they have 4 boys, Bobby, Lydon, Ryan and Mason.

This year’s other award recipients are Cheryl Itri, McCormack Award for Public Service; Sean O’Brien , John “Joe” Moakley Award, Outstanding Citizen; Thomas E. Smith, John “Doc” Tynan Profile in Courage Award; and Bobby McGarrell. They will all receive their awards at next year’s banguet.

Banquet Honors 2020 Parade Chief Marshal Susan McDonough

ome 200 supporters of the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council (the SBAWVC), the organizers of the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade over the last 70 years, gathered at the 2020 Parade Chief Marshal’s Banquet last Saturday. This year’s Parade Chief Marshal is Susan McDonough; she was the hostess of the event held in the Boston Teacher’s Union Hall.

It was a festive occasion, not least because of the much anticipated dinner itself, crowned with really delectable corned beef having the prerequisite light brownish-gray color.

After the dinner, and over coffee with strawberry shortcake, John Beatty of the SBAWVC, the Master of Ceremonies, rose to begin the evening’s program.

Several elected officials and leaders in the organizations connected to the Parade spoke during the after-dinner program.

Susan McDonough is not only the 2020 Parade Chief Marshal, she is the Commander of Martin F. McDonough American Legion Post

No. 368, and holds a key position in the Commonwealth’s Women Veterans Services. Her remarks were deeply felt and enthusiastically delivered; they reflected her immense gratitude for the help she has received from her family, friends and veterans colleagues during her tenure as Parade Chief Marshal.

EDITOR’S NOTE: With the 2020 Parade now cancelled, South Boston Online encourages the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council to re-appoint Susan McDonough as the 2021 Parade Chief Marshal. In our opinion, she certainly deserves that honor.

Col. Virginia Gaglio USAF, who commands the Massachusetts Air

Guard at Otis Air Force Base (now officially called “Joint Base Cape Cod”), was the Banquet’s featured keynote speaker. The Colonel was introduced as a “true leader” by emcee Beatty, and she immediately captured the attention of the Banquet’s attendees with her enthusiasm. Col. Gaglio possesses a remarkable career history. She joined the enlisted ranks of the Air Force, and over more than 30 years, worked her way up to her present rank and responsibilities. There’s talk, and it’s more than just a rumor, that she’ll be named a General shortly. Among other anecdotes, she spoke about

how one particular type of aircraft became known as “the Shamrock”.

James Francis Curran, Jr., was named the 2020 Veteran of the Year at the end of the lengthy program. To mark this honor, Curran received a framed print of Dan McCole’s iconic Parade watercolor. The 2020 Chief Marshal’s Banquet then closed its evening with a beautifully skilled performance of Irish step dancing, complete with colorful costumes. The performing artists were a dozen very talented dancers from the Dunleavy Boyle Academy of Irish Dance in Hanover.

Seniors Well and Truly Saluted This Year

his year, the 2020 Senior Salute was held in St. Peter Church Hall. It was a festive occasion indeed, with a hall full of 200 Seniors sitting among green, white, and orange decorations, unmistakably reminding the honored guests of Ireland’s tricolor flag. And the crowd responded – there were more shades of green than there are in the densest forest in the world. Small pots of Kelly green shamrocks were everywhere; everyone was in (very) high spirits.

City and State officials, along with the South Boston Citizens’ Association (the SBCA), serenaded the enthusiastic crowd with Irish songs. Members of South Boston’s (Peggy) Woods School of Dance performed to constant applause.

And of course, a boiled dinner of corned beef, cabbage, and other veggies anchored the menu, followed by a sweet, sweet dessert. South Boston’s Annual Senior Salute is a

jointly supported effort by the City of Boston and our own SBCA (at 150, the oldest citizens’ association in America). The Salute aims to celebrate those residents who for so many years have worked, raised families, and created the unique neighborhood of South Boston, affectionately called ”Southie”.

Emily Shea, the Commissioner of Boston’s “Age Strong” campaign, greeted the banqueteers; Margaret Drislane from SWH serenaded everyone. The singing of Irish songs was non-stop, and featured Steve Lynch, Tommy McGrath, David Biele, Michael Flaherty, Ed Flynn, and (of course) John Healey.

Councilor Ed Flynn and Rep. Biele Visit New Sensory Room at the Tynan Elementary

C

ouncilor Ed Flynn and Rep. David Biele visited the new sensory room at the Tynan Elementary in South Boston, along with Ambassador Ray Flynn. The sensory room will be used by special needs students to develop their senses and for therapeutic purposes.

The new room will be called “the Ambassador Raymond L. Flynn Sensory Room”, named after the former Mayor of Boston, and a longtime advocate for special needs students in Boston Public Schools.

“A mbassador Flynn has dedicated his life to helping others, and has been a tremendous advocate for students with special needs,” said Rep. Biele. “The Ambassador Raymond L. Flynn

Sensory Room will carry on that legacy and help generations of students with special needs.”

“Ambassador Flynn is a civic giant in our city. As Mayor, he never forgot that public service is about helping people and making a difference in the lives of others,” said Robert Consalvo, Senior Advisor in the Office of the Superintendent. “It is fitting that we name this room after him as it will help so many of Boston Public Schools students now, and for years to come.”

Rep. Biele Votes to Invest $18.3 Billion in State Transportation System Includes over $10 million for South Boston roadways and planning efforts

L

ast week, Representative David Biele joined his colleagues in the House of Representatives in passing a transportation bond bill that authorizes $18.28 billion for maintaining and improving the Commonwealth’s roads, bridges, and public transportation systems.

The legislation, An Act authorizing and accelerating transportation investment, ensures that Massachusetts invests in large-scale transportation capital a nd improvement projects, municipal road and bridge projects, regional transportation,

as well as programs aimed at r e du c i n g c on g e s t ion and improving air quality.

Regarding South Boston and Dorchester, the legislation specifically authorizes $10 million for design and improvements to intersections, roadways, sidewalks, and bridges along East Broadway, West Broadway, Dorchester Avenue, Old Colony Avenue, L Street, Farragut Road, Day Boulevard, Northern Avenue, a nd Haul Road.

The bill also authorizes funding for two transportation studies along key corridors in South Boston and Dorchester: (1) $250,000 to study transportation needs along the Red Line Corridor from JFK Station to

Andrew Station to Broadway Station; and (2) $100,000 to study traff ic reconf iguration at Kosciu sz ko Circle.

grants for rapid transit bus lanes and bus shelters; and $30 million for water transportation grant programs.

Additionally, the bill also appropriates: $2 .6 billion dedicated to sustainable transit system moder nization invest ments and ra i l i m pr ove m e nt s ; $300 million in Chapter 90 funding for municipal road and bridge projects; $825 million for South Coast R ail improvements; $695 million for Green Line extension improvements; $330 million dedicated to the im prove me nt of regional transit networks; $50 million in municipal

Happy 105th Birthday to Sr. Evelyn Hurley, SCN

We wish Sister Evelyn Hurley, SCN a Happy Birthday! Sr. Evelyn turned 105 on Saturday, March 7th. We also welcome Sister Evelyn back to South Boston from April 1 to April 21st. She is enjoying her time at the Mother house in Nazareth, Kentucky, but misses her many friends in Boston. I’m sure she will be eager to meet many of you during the time she will be visiting. Last year during her visit, at age 104 she was out and about almost every day. Amazing! At age 105 she will be no different!

The Peace Breakfasts

a t u rd ay mor n i n g , March 7, another in the series of Peace Breakfasts took place in St. Monica Church Hall. Peace Breakfasts are now a custom that began more than two years ago, in response to occurrences of violence involving police officers.

Under the guidance of the Pastor, Fr. Peter Defazio, put into practice by Deacon Paul Kline, and strongly supported by police off icers from South Boston’s Station C-6, Peace Breakfasts have become immensely popular events. Perhaps as many as 3,400 meals have been served at these events to date; as far as South Boston Online knows, our local police force at Station C-6 is the only one in the City to take such a key part in this k ind of communit y effort.

Volunteers play a highly

important part in Peace Dining at Monica’s Kitchen. The people who are members of the Good Samaritan Ministry at Monica’s Kitchen provide everything from fine food to child care for their guests. Last Saturday, young members of CROSSROA DS (from Camp Wing in Duxbury)

served the Peace Breakfast. In addition, a dozen volunteers from what its members call the South Boston Catholic Young Adult Commission – the “YAC” for short – pitched in to help with the Peace Breakfast.

The YAC began among St. Brigid Church members, and

has as its mission joint efforts between local Catholic churches and parishes in three areas – social, spirituality, and service.

Join us at Peace Breakfasts in the future – all are welcome.

As in Luke 14:23, “Go out to the highways and hedges, and bid all there to come to My feast.”

South Boston Residents Running for Cancer Research

Running in the Boston Marathon® to raise money for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Location: Columbia Road $425./month

On April 20, Kelly Kramer, Emily Meehan, and Kimberly Newcomb of South Boston are running to conquer cancer as members of the DanaFarber Marathon Challenge team in the 124th Boston Marathon®.

The South Boston residents along with more than 500 Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge teammates from across the United States and around the world, will run Massachusetts’ historic marathon route from Hopkinton to Boston to raise $6.25 million for cancer research at DanaFarber Cancer Institute.

st This year marks the 31 annual running of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge (DFMC). One hundred percent of the money raised by the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team goes to Dana-Farber’s Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research, which supports promising science research in its earliest stages. The Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge has raised more than $100 million for the Claudia Adams Barr Program to date.

In 1990, Dana-Farber was among the first charity organizations to be recognized by the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A), which organizes the Boston Marathon. The Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team offers its members extensive fundraising support, training guidance from 1976 Boston Marathon men’s champion Jack Fultz, and Boston-area training runs, plus volunteer opportunities for non-runners. Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge runners who are not time-qualified for the Boston Marathon receive an invitational entry into the race.
