At 6:34 on Easter morning, sunlight first peered through a low, gray layer of stratus clouds, although the solar orb could not be seen. The tide was high, and it was cold. Temperatures were in the 30s, and were made piercing by a

light breeze. A crowd of perhaps as many as 2,000 had gathered for Easter worship on Castle Island, on the northeast rampart of Fort Independence facing the Donald McKay obelisk.

When the true crime special featuring Amy Lord aired last month, it reinvigorated Andrea Regan’s feeling that she should do something to honor the 24-yearold South Boston woman who was murdered in 2013.

The television special generated buzz in the community, Regan, the owner of East Side Yoga & Fitness, said. But amidst the buzz, Regan realized that some people who had moved to South Boston in the last couple of years did not know about Lord.

“So many new people moved to South Boston,” Regan said. “It just kind of bothered me that no one knew the story.”

This weekend, Regan and her

husband, Tom Regan, are organizing a self-defense workshop honoring Lord, a way to generate funds for a park named in the Wilbraham native’s honor, to ensure her story is not forgotten, and to help people learn self-defense techniques.

“It just kind of bothered me that no one knew the story,” said Andrea Regan, owner of East Side Yoga & Fitness.

When she first mentioned to young women at the studio that she was planning this workshop in remembrance of Lord, “no one knew her story,” Regan said.

GE announces Fort Point site as for its new headquarters

General Electric is moving to Fort Point.

GE announced the new location of its headquarters in a statement Thursday, March 24. The company will move to Necco Street, near Fort Point Channel and Summer Street.

“The property is under agreement to be purchased from P&G and sits at the edge of its 44 acre South Boston campus—at 5 and 6 Necco Way, representing roughly 2.5 acres,” reads the statement.

The self-defense workshop is at Regan’s Motivated Fitness – which Tom Regan has owned for eight years – Saturday afternoon. Amy Lord was a member of Regan’s Motivated Fitness.

Regan’s has always held selfdefense workshops, Andrea Regan said, but this is the first one they’re holding in honor of Lord.

The Regans have the support of Amy Lord’s mother, Cindy Lord, Andrea Regan said, calling Cindy “the most gracious, giving woman.” Cindy called this selfdefense workshop honoring her daughter, “wonderful,” Regan said, and added that at some point she would like to see something that gives back to the South Boston community.

“We feel like if we start with this, start kind of getting people to be safe… and then figure out where to go from there,” Regan said.

This first-time workshop in honor of Lord will donate all its proceeds to “Amy’s Sparkle Park” in Wilbraham, which opened last year.

“We will continue with selfdefense workshops,” Regan said.

“We do want to give back (to the community), and especially so that

At the self-defense workshops, participants are taught not only physical self-defense techniques, but are also instructed in mental awareness. Awareness, Regan said, includes reminding people not to walk or run the same route every day, not to walk around with headphones on or while texting, and to check the back seat of your car as you enter it.

“Little stuff like that that we tend to forget anyway,” Regan said.

Participants will also learn physical techniques and practice kicking and hitting in the workshop.

“The physical aspect is there as well,” she said. “It’s hand-eye coordination, you’re kicking as well.”

As of the beginning of the week, the workshop was about half full.

And if it does fill and there is a high demand, Regan said they’ll schedule another one to accommodate community members and honor Amy Lord.

“We’re really looking forward to it on Saturday,” she said.

The self-defense workshop in honor of Amy Lord is Saturday, April 2, from noon to 1:30 p.m., at Regan’s Motivated Fitness, 315 West Broadway. The cost is $30 and all proceeds will go to “Amy’s Sparkle Park” in Wilbraham.

“When GE contacted us, we saw an opportunity to welcome a world class innovation leader into our neighborhood, benefiting the local community, enhancing the Seaport District and generating value for our shareholders,” said Charles Pierce, president of the Gillette Company at P&G. Gillette World Shaving Headquarters are adjacent to Fort Point Channel.

GE’s move will begin this year, as had been previously reported. GE employees will move to a temporary location on Farnsworth Street (also in South Boston) this summer. The move will be done in several steps and is expected to be complete by 2018.

“Boston was selected after a careful evaluation of the business ecosystem, talent, long-term costs, quality of life for employees, connections with the world and proximity to other important company assets,” the company said in a statement.

GE will have about 800 employees in Boston: 200 corporate employees and 600 digital industrial product managers, designers and developers divided among GE Digital, Current, robotics and Life Sciences.

The Boston Globe, the news outlet to first report that GE was moving to Boston, has said that GE is “the biggest company ever to relocate to the city.”

Library hosts free comedy workshops

As part of the South Boston Branch Library’s “Adult Writers’ Workshop,” a three-part comedy workshop is being offered. The first session took place on Saturday, March 5. The public is invited to the next two sessions on April 2 and May 7. These sessions are free and informal.

The workshop facilitator is Brett Johnson, a professional comedian who has performed at many venues in Boston and across the Northeast.

Brett can also advise you on assembling original humor and comic situations, which could lead you to creating better, more entertaining writing. To do this, he conducts an enjoyable, low-pressure workshop.

The sessions are from 1 to 2:30 p.m., in the branch library’s Public Room. They are free and open to anyone interested in developing their comic and humorous talents.

Continued from Page 1 Robert Casey, the pastor of South Boston’s St. Brigid Parish, began the 2016 Sunrise Easter Mass with an opening hymn, “Morning Has Broken.” Sunrise Mass on Castle Island has been a tradition here for many decades; it is always well attended by the faithful. Needless to say, they have learned to dress warmly.

The crowd was graced by the presence of South Boston’s State Rep. Nick Collins and his fiancée, Olivia J. Liff from Jamaica Plain. (South Boston Community Health Center lists her as a member of its family medicine staff.) They are planning an August date for their wedding.

The complete Easter Gospel readings tell a fascinating story. It begins with the Vigil Gospel of Luke, which narrates the morning visit to the tomb of Jesus by the holy women, where they see two angels.

John’s Gospel was read at the sunrise Mass this year. This Gospel also tells of the morning visit to the tomb by Mary Magdalene, who runs back to tell Peter that Christ’s body is gone. She then runs back with Pater and John, “the other Disciple whom Jesus loved.” The details are charming, including that Peter, the older one of the pair, ran out of breath and had to slow down – the other one waited for him. The homily dwelt on the importance of this event by using running as a theme – by emphasizing that the Easter morning events all took place at a full-speed, flat-out run.

The ever-obliging volunteers from the Castle Island Association then provided a welcome collation of coffee and doughnuts inside Fort Independence after the Sunrise Service. Happy Easter!

Reminiscing about “Dirty Old Boston”

Jim Botticelli, author of “Dirty Old Boston,” presents and describes some of the key photos from his book.

The South Boston Historical Society held its May meeting on Monday. The guest speaker was Jim Botticelli, who assembled, created and wrote “Dirty Old Boston.” This is a lengthy photographic journey through the City of Boston during four decades, from the end of World War II through 1987, when the current mega-reconstruction first put down its roots. Said reconstruction

was watered and fertilized by the original, authoritarian Boston Redevelopment Authority. The West End demolition actually came years after the first demo of the so-called “New York Streets” in the South End. Only Albany Street remains.

Botticelli’s book (284 pages) came out less than two years ago, but is already in its second, 7,000 copy printing. The majority of the photographs in “Dirty Old Boston” are black-and-white, or

more accurately, varying modulations of gray. It is a compelling selection of hundreds of pictures, all of which depict a Boston that will frequently “click” in the viewer’s/reader’s memory. How many of the streets in “Dirty Old Boston” might you have walked, how many of those places have you been, even those that weren’t here in South Boston?

“Dirty Old Boston” is currently being made into a movie. It won’t

be a “Good Will Hunting” knockoff; the “Dirty Old Boston” pictures are more evocative of “The Friend of Eddie Coyle.” It’ll be a labor of love, so there’s no need to pay taxes on what you earn, because earn you won’t. It was a great lecture, followed by many questions.

While it’s difficult to draw conclusions from still photos, you know something? The people in the photographs looked happier back then – 40+ years ago!

Meet Colmn Gilroy: Proud of his Irish heritage

As the old saying goes, “He’s got the map of Ireland” all over his face. And so it is so with our local youngster with the wonderful smile, Colmn Gilroy.

Colmn, 11, is the son of Brendan and Marcella Gilroy. He attends the Carroll School in Waltham.

He’s doing well in class and someday would like to play professional football, hockey or basketball.

His favorite color is neon and his favorite food is pizza. His favorite professional athletes are the late and great Ted Williams and Babe Ruth. He loves reading about these two legendary players and telling his dad about them. He also likes Red Sox slugger David Ortiz and Bruins right wing and local favorite, Jimmy Hayes.

In his leisure time, Colmn watches TV, plays games and watches Netflix movies on his iPhone. In addition to sports stories, he likes reading comedies. He’s currently reading “Diary of a Wimpy Kid:

“Colmn loves going to Ireland ... He’s proud of his Irish heritage,” said Brendan Gilroy, Colmn’s father.

Last winter, Colmn played in the Gate of Heaven CYO basketball house.

“I’m tall,” he said. “I get a lot of rebounds and someday I figure I’ll be able to dunk the ball. Like tennis and swimming, basketball is physical and it helps me get stronger.”

He’s played in the South Boston

Little League for the past five seasons. Last summer, while playing for Coach Bobby McGarrell, Colmn hit a key triple that helped his team win the game against the best pitcher in the league.

“I like baseball,” he said. “It is fun and I get to play with my friends.”

In the summer, along with baseball, he enjoys riding his bike, sailing, as well as playing tennis or swimming at the Weymouth Club. He

also loves going to County Mayo in Western Ireland to visit family members.

“Colmn loves going to Ireland,” said his father, Brendan Gilroy.

“He’s proud of his Irish heritage.

He’s been there three or four times and likes doing farm work and driving the tractor. He likes helping out. He loves spending times there with his aunts, uncles and cousins.”

Next winter, Colmn plans on playing hockey again in the South Boston Youth Hockey League and hoop in school and for Gatey CYO. He likes to keep busy and have fun.

Colmn is a polite kid with a caring attitude which is truly refreshing. His dad is proud of him – and he should be.

“He’s a good boy and works hard in school,” Brendan Gilroy said.

“He’s good at helping others at church and in the neighborhood.

He shovels sidewalks for neighbors and helps people in need all the time.”

Tynan Community Center receives sports equipment donation

The Tynan Community Center staff and kids received new equipment and sports apparel from representatives for GEICO and Good Sports of Quincy, which partners with corporate sponsors in reaching out to grassroots programs in need of assistance, on March 22.

GEICO funded the donation and was represented by its legislature attorney Samantha Freedman from the Washington, D.C., office. Mike Wright, Good Sports community partnerships manager, Kayley Gallagher, Good Sports partnerships assistant, and Vaughn Pffeffer, Good Sports operations assistant, brought in and set up the presentation. Also present to view the newly-donated sports equipment and apparel was Boston’s Chief of Health and Human Services Felix Arroyo, Boston Center for Youth and Families Commissioner Will Morales, BCYF Deputy Commissioner Mike Sulprizio, and BCYF Director of Operations Hector Alvarez.

Tynan Community Center Program Director Kathy Davis and Katie O’Connell took advantage of this opportunity, and through their diligence, secured the grant for the second time in three years.

The total package valued just north of $10,000, and includes 48 scrimmage vests, floor hockey sticks, tuff ball hockey sets, goalie masks, chest protectors, hockey blockers, 48 playground balls, 20 yoga matts, 10 jump ropes, sideline markers, 24 football belts, after school play pack, 30 basketballs, 12 footballs, 12 volleyballs, 10 mini-basketballs, stop watches, indoor soccer goals, 120 youth performance crew shirts, 18 volleyball

shirts, and BSN promo gym bags.

GEICO is proud to be instrumental in this endeavor.

“Thanks to Good Sports and the partnership with GEICO ... youth at the BCFY Tynan Community Center will have a whole lot of new sports equipment to enjoy as they head into their busy April school vacation week and summer season,” wrote BCYF Commissioner Will Morales.

“GEICO and Good Sorts formed a community partnership six years ago,” wrote Rick Hoagland, GEICO Regional Vice President, “in order to contribute new equipment and resources to youth sports organizations in Massachusetts. GEICO believes that supporting youth sports, including this equipment donation to the Tynan Community Center, fosters strong communities in the Commonwealth and will encourage teamwork, leadership, and perseverance.”

‘We walk with Jesus’ Outdoor Way of the Cross travels through South Boston

eading a congregation of umbrella-toting parishioners, Peter Harrington, Maria Celeste Lara, Julio Lara, Phil Allison and Andrea Pena took turns carrying a large, wooden cross as they walked the streets of South Boston on Friday morning.

The cross bearers, members of various South Boston churches, were just a few of the community members who commemorated Good Friday by participating in South Boston’s outdoor ecumenical Way of the Cross.

“Today we follow (Jesus) in His final surrender,” Javier Soegaard, pastoral associate at the South BostonSeaport Catholic Collaborative, said at the start of the walk.

The Way of the Cross – or Stations of the Cross – is a representation of Jesus Christ’s day of crucifixion, which is commemorated on Good Friday. Churches often have 14 images hung inside, which people can stop and pray at sequentially.

(The 14 Stations of the Cross, in order, are: Jesus is condemned to death; Jesus accepts the cross; Jesus falls the first time; Jesus meets His Mother; Simon of Cyrene carries the cross; Veronica wipes the face of Jesus; Jesus falls the second time; Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem; Jesus falls the third time; Jesus is stripped of His garments; Crucifixion: Jesus is nailed to the cross; Jesus dies on the cross; Jesus’ body is removed from the cross; and Jesus is laid in the tomb and covered in incense.)

Alternatively, the Way of the Cross can be walked outside, as is done

each Lenten season in South Boston.

Sr. Madeleine Cavanaugh of St. Monica Church started this outdoor Way of the Cross about two decades ago. This year, the walk was organized

by Soegaard, the Rev. Burns Stanfield of the Fourth Presbyterian Church, and Carlos Quintin, a parishioner at St. Monica Church.

Sheltered briefly from the rain, parishioners from community churches – including St. Monica-St. Augustine, St. Brigid and Fourth Presbyterian – gathered inside the front doors of St. Monica Church before embarking on a prayerful walk that would end at Dorchester Heights.

The walk was diverse and inclusive, with participants ranging from young children to senior citizens, and with prayers, reflections and songs in English and Spanish. The ecumenical worshipers stopped at churches, a school, a nursing home and on sidewalks in busy South Boston Friday morning, pausing at one point beneath the “D’Angelo Grilled Sandwiches” sign on Old Colony Avenue.

“I think they make a concerted effort to stop at as many Christian sites along the way, or sites that sort of are dedicated to the public good, so that would be within that sort of model of service,” Soegaard said.

But the end of the route, which finishes at the highest point in the neighborhood, is the most significant.

“The hill is the goal. It’s trying to sort of walk up the hill … trying to get that sort of imaginative experience of walking with Jesus,” Soegaard said.

“That’s the most important part.”

“It’s been a great privilege and

honor to walk this walk with … souls such as yourselves,” said the Rev. Burns Stanfield. “We walk with Jesus, and you – we – are the body of Christ.”

Alumni hockey game raises money for youth hockey league

On Saturday, March 25, former members of the South Boston Youth Hockey League participated in an alumni game to raise funds for the SBYHL. The event was initially organized by Mike Prendergast several years ago. Each player involved in this event made a donation.

“It’s good to get the guys back together,” said Thomas McGrath, SBYHL president. “It’s a good way for the guys (and gal) to see the new

rink and the improvements. Hopefully we can do this next year again and make it an annual event.”

SBYHL Vice President Teddy Cunniff was also happy that these guys came out in support of their former youth hockey league.

“It’s great to see them back here,” he said. “I’m glad they took time out to be here to support the program. … But I wish they passed the puck back then when they played in the league like they’ve been doing here today,” he concluded, with a chuckle.

There, they are guided by volunteers, who “know the ropes” for making out accurate and effective applications for advanced schooling.

Easter egg hunt hits new heights

This year’s Easter egg hunt, sponsored annually by State Rep. Nick Collins, drew a good crowd of both adults and children, despite cool, overcast weather (ahh, spring in New England).

The young questers of eggs had to contend with a new wrinkle – they were asked questions or given puzzles, and then were shown the way to get their Easter eggs. It was all good fun, and those of all ages enjoyed taking part.

Students build leprechaun traps at South Boston Catholic Academy The K2 students at South Catholic Academy – with help from the fifth and sixth grade students – made very creative leprechaun traps. K2 also made special hats to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. All of us at South Boston Catholic Academy got a chance to wear green in honor St. Patrick’s Day. March 17 was certainly a fun day for all! We hope that everyone had a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day and a happy Easter!

The meeting will be an opportunity for to review the pre, during, and post pilot data and gather public feedback on the impact of the pilot program.

The six-month pilot program, launched on August 17, opened the South Boston Bypass Road to non-commercial traffic at all times in the section from Richards Street to West Service Road, and opened the South Boston Bypass Road in the eastbound direction from I-93 to Richards Street during AM peak hours (6 to 10 a.m.). The pilot also opened the HOV Airport Express Lanes from I-93 Northbound, Kneeland Street and Traveler Street to the Ted Williams Tunnel to all vehicles at all times.
