On Tuesday, March 15, a U.S. District Court judge restored the 2016 parade’s original, longer route, allowing it to end in Andrew Square. South Boston’s Allied War Veterans Council held a final meeting Tuesday evening to assure maximum parade safety. The following morning, the USS McFaul (DDG-74), a guided missile cruiser with GE engines, docked; her crew will march in the parade.

Editorial: The three saints of winter

T

his will be in part an editorial and in part kind of a social commentary.

After our recent weather, you don’t need to be told that spring, or a reasonable facsimile thereof, has arrived. And we have a very special South Boston holiday weekend at hand. However you spend it (even watching a half-amputated parade on Sunday afternoon), St. Patrick’s Day will be a celebration.

Last winter, we set a record for snow; this year, we’ve totaled only about half of our usual snowfall in South Boston. But no matter, because we have the assistance of three saints to get us through the wintry cold, darkness and frozen precipitation.

The three saints, of course, are Nicholas, Valentine and Patrick.

Nicholas, whose feast day is Dec. 6 and who has become a Christmas icon, sits on the threshold of winter. He also serves as the patron

saint of children, along with countless other worthy causes wherever he has oversight. We don’t “observe” Christmas – we celebrate it, aided and abetted by St. Nick, aka “Santa Claus.”

And now we have St. Patrick’s Day – no longer approaching. It’s here today, as you are reading this.

And the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade will step off at 1 p.m.

Have you ever noticed that the very best (and most memorable) celebrations are religious in nature?

Valentine, in the dark, deep ides of February – a time sacred to Juno, the Roman Queen of the Gods – reminds us of romantic love. In fact, he is the patron saint of lovers.

Over 2,000 years ago, the valentines we now send used to be bits of parchment with names written on them and placed in urns. It was the first known dating service (take that, Hallmark!). What better way than Valentine’s Day to get your mind off the depths of winter? And were you aware that Groundhog Day, our own national sign of spring, was once celebrated on Feb. 14, right along with Valentine’s Day? It still is, in certain parts of

Which brings South Boston Online to the social commentary we mentioned at first: Have you ever noticed that the very best (and most memorable) celebrations are religious in nature? Think about the celebrations connected with our three “winter saints” above. Then, remember that Thanksgiving was a religious feast after the Pilgrims’ first winter in the New World. Ask a German about his or her Corpus Christi plans, or Parisians about

their Ascension weekends. Go to a Lunar New Year celebration in Chinatown; attend the dragon parade.

Join your Jewish friends for Hanukkah or a Seder supper at Passover.

Halloween originated as All Hallows Eve; the so-called Twelfth Day of Christmas falls on Jan. 6, the Epiphany.

Think of your own memorable religious celebrations – weddings, christenings, church parties, and so on. Even at funerals, we have gained enough good sense to take some time to “celebrate” the life of the deceased individual who has passed on and left us behind.

And then there’s the Granddaddy of all religious celebrations – Mardi Gras, Carnivale or whatever you’d like to call it. Mardi Gras has gone beyond celebrations and has turned into a week-long festival. You’ll never forget your first one.

So join the parties. You might become a fan of religious celebrations. They’re certainly a lot of fun.

Wherever you go and whatever you do, May the luck of the Irish be there with you.

Continued from Page 1 permit request in April of last year, City Hall’s licensing bureaucracy sat on the request until February. At that time, with just a month to go, city officials informed the Veterans Council that the parade route was to be cut in half – ending on Farragut Road, not in Andrew Square as usual.

Two reasons were given for cutting the parade short: cost savings and public safety.

Last weekend, after negotiations with the City of Boston failed to find a solution, the Veterans Council announced it would took legal action. On Tuesday, Judge Richard G. Stearns in Boston’s U.S. District Court ruled in favor of the council, which had filed a lawsuit challenging the city’s decision. Not only did Stearns refer to the 9-0 Supreme Court decision in 1994, he also faulted the city for the long delay in issuing the parade license, as well as the weakness of their reasons for cutting it in half. The parade will now proceed as it has for the last 70 years – up Broadway, right on P to Fourth, and then to Andrew Square via Fourth, Fifth, Dorchester Heights, and Dorchester Street.

Amputating the 2016 parade admittedly became an emotional issue between the Allied War Veterans Council and Boston’s officials. Tim Duross, the 2016 parade organizer, called the parade, “A celebration of family, faith, and community,” and said that, “people come to this parade year after year for the tradition, it’s part of our past.” The full route is very important.

As an editorial comment, now that

the parade route issue has finally been settled, let’s shake hands cordially and have a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day and Evacuation Day weekend. Thursday, March 17, at 9 a.m., the “real” Evacuation Day will see a Memorial Mass in the charming and historic St. Augustine Chapel at Dorchester Street and Sixth. The Mass will be followed by a memorial ceremony and wreath-laying on Dorchester Heights at 10 a.m., in front of the monument “where the mayflower joined the shamrock.” All are welcome to attend. On Friday evening, the South Boston Citizens’ Association holds its 136th Annual Evacuation Day Banquet in the Convention Center. (Call 857-204-5825 for tickets.) It’s always a real “Southie time.”

Tuesday evening, Ed Flynn of the Allied War Veterans Council convened the usual pre-Parade safety meeting in the MassBay Credit Union’s public room. So far, some 130 units have signed up for the parade, which is about average. The Boston Police Department explained its plans for Sunday’s deployment.

They asked the public to call 911 at once if they spot any disturbances – any public drinking, rooftop parties, gross public displays, whatever.

The EMTs, fire department, MBTA police, and State Police explained their parade strategies. Package store and tavern hours will be limited.

Rep. Nick Collins and Boston City Councilor Michael Flaherty offered their good wishes. Bill Desmond, the commander of the Veterans Council, concluded the meeting by referring to the history of Dorchester Heights,

saying, “this is what it’s all about.” A parade banner honoring the memory of John “Wacko” Hurley was displayed. Jean Shiflett oversaw a tasty collation, complete with a St. Patrick’s Day cake and oatmeal-raisin cookies.

Wednesday morning promptly at 10 a.m., the guided missile destroyer USS McFaul (DDG-74) docked at Black Falcon Pier. A visit from the U.S. Navy is a regular part of South Boston’s Evacuation Day observances, arranged for us

ton’s guests over this weekend; they will march in the parade on Sunday.

Be sure to greet them and wish them well. And perhaps symbolically, the USS McFaul is powered by her GE engines. (As you know, GE is relocating its headquarters group to the South Boston Waterfront during this year and next.) For your information, the USS McFaul (DDG) has been awarded a Battle “E” Award, took part in humanitarian aid to the Republic of Georgia, and was instrumental in a merchant ship’s rescue from Indian Ocean pirates. She’s a warrior, for certain.

40th annual Boys & Girls Club luncheon sells out

The South Boston Boys & Girls Club held its 40th annual St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon on Friday, March 11. It was an auspicious event – the weather, the location in the Westin Boston Waterfront’s Laugh Boston Comedy Club, an enthusiastic sell-out crowd, the upcoming Daylight Savings change, and of course, a corned beef and cabbage feast all combined to make a truly festive event. Twenty-four tables were filled to overflowing. Even the jokes from our elected officials garnered laughter.

South Boston Clubhouse member Tara Murphy received a Boys & Girls Club “Youth of the Year” Award from the Massachusetts House of Representatives, which was presented to her

by Sen. Linda Dorcena-Forry and Rep. Nick Collins. She was also the Luncheon’s keystone speaker.

Her beautiful given name, Tara, is the mount in County Meath where the ancient rulers of Ireland worshipped, as well as the name

of Scarlett O’Hara’s plantation in “Gone with the Wind.” Congratulations, young lady.

Irish music was provided by perennial favorites Curragh’s Fancy. The Laugh Boston space, with its tiered seating and intimate performance stage was an ideal locale for a festive get-together.

Fr. Joe White gave a blessing. The Host and Master of Ceremonies was John Tobin. His jokes suited the eclectic crowd, were well delivered, and were of many vintages – this writer recalls hearing one of John’s jokes (the one about the dog who can say “roof,” “rough” and “Ruth”) an even 60 years ago (seriously!).

Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito delivered St. Patrick’s Day greetings, and spoke of how much the Boys & Girls Clubs have meant to their communities. Mayor Martin J. Walsh echoed these sentiments, and mentioned the fact that 2016 was the 100th anniversary of Ireland’s Easter Uprising. He also made some humorous comments about this year’s shortened parade

Annual Senior Salute strikes a celebratory note

Each year, the mayor of Boston’s office and the South Boston Citizens’ Association host the annual South Boston Senior Salute in St. Monica Hall. This is a noontime corned-beef-andcabbage banquet to which all seniors are invited. This event ties into the St. Patrick “season” in South Boston, and is always well attended. This Year of Our Lord 2016 was no exception.

Approximately 300 seniors showed up for the feast. It was a complete Irish banquet, including ample coffee and soda bread.

Yes, it was the kind that had raisins in it – lots of them – but no caraway flavoring. After all, we didn’t want to start another Irish Civil War. There were many, many raffles, and even a brownie at the end – not very Irish, we admit, but very good.

Music was provided by the Mike Reynolds duo and step dancing was on the program.

Fr. Steve offered a blessing. The

Pledge of Allegiance was offered to the flag by all, followed by singing “God Bless America.”

Many elected officials showed up. Michael Flaherty continued his reign as our premier Irishsinging politician. Congressman Steve Lynch also sang and cracked a joke about making the parade last for a long time: “We’ll walk the new route very slowly this year.” The seniors laughed at his joke, but booed the mayor’s decision afterwards.

Rep. Nick Collins pulled raffle tickets industriously. Mayor Walsh announced that Marine Industrial Park on our Waterfront will now be known as Mayor Ray Flynn Industrial Park. He then congratulated photographer Eileen O’Connor on her long, productive career; this Senior Salute was Eileen’s last official function. Walsh also pulled a bunch of winning raffle tickets.

The Senior Salute ended on a celebratory note. And now it’s on to Sunday’s parade.

Meet Justin Espinal Youngster hopes to be a building contractor someday

Justin Espinal is a reserved, polite young boy who is enjoying life and being a member of the South Boston Boys & Girls Club.

Justin, 9, is the son of Solania and Aarron Espinal. He’s in the third grade at the William E. Russell Elementary School in Dorchester. His favorite subject is history and some day he plans on being a building contractor so he can build big, beautiful buildings and homes.

Justin’s favorite color is orange and his favorite food is rice and chicken. In his leisure time, he enjoys playing with his iPad and toys at home and watching TV. His favorite TV show is Liv and Maddie. This teen sitcom is about identical twin sisters with entirely different personalities. And, his favorite books are the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series written by Jeff Kinney.

At the club, Justin loves going to the education room, art room, computer room, and being helped with his homework by club staff.

He really likes the staff.

“They’re always nice to me and the other kids,” he said. “They help us understand our school work and if we have any other problems they help out by listening to us.”

Justin is looking forward to the summer. He plans on going to the beach and swimming. He can’t wait for his family trip to Canobie Lake Park or Whales Tale Water Park. He loves going to New Hampshire and he enjoys riding his razor scooter and bike.

If he were the president of the United States, he said he would, “give people money and a place to live (and) make food less expensive. Give away water for free… and have teleporters so that people can go from one place to another place in a couple of minutes.”

This event has become one of the city’s premier food events, enjoyed by 500 attendees. For an entrance fee of $50 in advance ($60 at the door), attendees can sample food and beverage offerings from 30 local restaurants while enjoying live jazz music and bidding on outstanding silent auction items and raffles.

Ice-O-Rama at the Murphy Rink SBYHL players competed in puck shooting, speeding skating events

On Sunday, March 13, the annual Evacuation Day Ice-o-rama event was held at the Murphy Rink. The event was sponsored by the DCR, the South Boston Youth Hockey League, Comcast and Mass Bay Credit Union. SBYHL volunteers Thomas McGrath, Teddy Cunniff, Andrea Flaherty, Cheryl Joyce, Harry Minucci and Joyce “The Admiral� Higgins were present at the rink to oversee this event.

Puck Shooting contest In the six and under age bracket, Thomas Brooks (boys division) and Maddie Minucci (girls division) finished first. In the eight and under age bracket, Harry Minucci finished in first place and Rocco Blasi came in second. In the 10 and under age bracket, Mario Blasi came out on top and Nolan Young fin-

ished second. In the 12 and under age bracket, Eddie Murray brought home the gold while Aidan Young captured the silver medal. In the 14 and under age bracket, Sean Hartford came in first place and Joey Burke finished in second place.

Speed Skating contest In six and under age bracket, Maddie Minucci and Thomas Brooks both won gold. In the eight and under age bracket, Harry Minucci, Joe DiBlasi and Logan LeBurke came in the top three.

Carson Place packed for Shamrock fundraiser

On Saturday evening, March 6, at Carson Place, close to 500 people attended the annual South Boston Special Kids and Young Adults annual fundraiser. Richie “Fish” Adams was presented with the Sissy Devine Award for his involvement in the SBBK. Adams goes to all the SBBK Monday night meetings, bowls every Sunday with the kids, attends SBBK trips, and is loved by all the kids who “flock around him.”

SBBK volunteer Cheryl Flaherty greatly appreciated the support and generosity of all those who attended this fundraiser.

“Sissy was a volunteer herself,” Flaherty wrote. “And her family honors her memory by presenting the award to someone who gives tirelessly of their time and really enjoys the kids.

The SBBK volunteers show up every Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Senior House on H Street. We also run a bowling league every Sunday

from noon to 2 p.m. at the South Boston Yacht Club. These kids are all so happy, loving and innocent.

“We also spend time playing games, having dances, watching movies, practicing for our talent show or just hanging out,” she added. “Our show … is April 16 at 3 p.m. at Carson Place. We take a trip to the East Hill Farm in Troy, N.H., in May of each year with the kids for two full days enjoying the farm and tons of activities.

“Money we receive from fundraisers such as this recent event organized by Robert Pacitti and Claire (Linehan) Miller,” she concluded, “help cover the costs of our New Hampshire trip. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the people of South Boston and beyond.”

Robert Pacitti and Claire Miller only want to help others, which is why they’ve spearheaded this annual fundraiser. And they’re modest to a fault.

South Boston team wins memorial hockey tournament

Last weekend, the 13th annual John Cunniff Memorial Shamrock Tournament was held at the DCR Murphy Rink in South Boston. Four Pee Wee “A” teams – South Boston, the Cambridge Falcons, the Medford Mustangs, and the New England Predators – competed in this coveted tournament. South Boston defeated the New England Predators 1-0 in the championship game.

This was only the second time that Southie took home the gold. Milton won in ’03, ‘04, and ’07. Dorchester won in ’05 and ’06. Duxbury won in ’08. Arlington won in ’09. The Conquistadors won in ’10 and ’12.

Marblehead won in ’13 and the Terriers won in ’14. The rink was shut down last winter due to the weather and needed repairs. Southie won in 2011 and the local team is this year’s tournament champions.

Niall Ryan scored the winning goal, assisted by Chris Conroy and

Aidan Young. As far as their coaches were concerned, goalie Joey Hamilton, who registered the shutout in the final, and Niall Ryan, were the co-MVPs of the game. This team was also in the state tournament last week and made it to the semi-finals.

Bobby McGarrell is the head coach, ably assisted by Bubba Maddox, Mike Murray, and Chris Crowley.

“These players are a hard-working team,” McGarrell said. “They put forth a great deal of effort in their preparation. They compete at a high-level each and every opportunity put in front of them. They give their maximum effort and it is evident in their performances.

“They deserve all the credit,” McGarrell added. “The coaches and I are honored to have the opportunity to coach them.”

The late John Cunniff was born in South Boston and was an All-American at Boston College. He was the first player to be named twice as the

John was also on the U.S. National team in 1967 and played in the 1968 Olympics before playing and coaching in the NHL. Teddy Cunniff, the vice president of the South Boston Youth Hockey League along with SBHYL president Thomas McGrath started this event to honor a hockey legend and a true son of South Boston.

“Southie played well and as a

team,” Cunniff said. “The passing and teamwork was terrific. They deserved to win again a tough opponent. The goalie was great and had a shutout.

“It was great that Southie won right after the rink was just reopened,” Cunniff said. “The newly renovated rink and a new beginning for the hockey program with a win in this memorial tournament are good for us and the players.”

Meet Shams Karzan

Young girl wants to be a doctor someday

She’s a serious, young girl who is plans on being a doctor someday so she can help those who are sick. Her name is Shams Karzan.

Shams, 9, is the daughter of Karima and Rachid Karzan. She has an older sister, Shahd, and a younger brother, Shaker. She’s in the third grade at the Tynan Elementary School in South Boston. She’s an honor roll caliber student and her favorite subject is math. Shams’ favorite color is red, her favorite food is pears, and her favorite singer is Selena Gomez.

At the South Boston Boys & Girls Club, she enjoys playing soccer and basketball in the gym. She likes going to arts and crafts and the com-

puter room. She also loves going to the education room, the homework room, the games room, and swimming in the pool with her club friends.

Shams appreciates the club staff

and all they do for her and other members.

“They’re nice,” she said. “They’re friendly and help me in arts and crafts and in the computer room.

They help all of us when we need

them. I like all the staff at the club.”

In her leisure time at home, Shams helps her mom clean the house, watches TV, and plays with her toys and dolls. In addition, she likes reading books from the Diary of a Wimpy Kids series written by Jeff Kinney.

Shams is looking forward to this summer. She plans on swimming at Carson Beach and building sandcastles. She also intends to play with her friends as much as she can, continue going to the Club, and on trips with her family.

If she were the president of this great country, Shams said that she would, “Forbid people from littering…and help homeless people find jobs and places to live.”

Late in February, the “Arts Around the Corner” Gallery opened at 317 E St., directly behind the Neatly Nested shop that faces out on West Broadway. South Boston’s newest art gallery is the creation and brainchild of the South Boston Arts Association, led by local watercolorist Dan McCole and managed by Tom and Pat Steiner, fine artists themselves.

A great start in life: The Boston Basics

As the parent of a small child, you don’t have to be told that your son or daughter is developing very rapidly. Many research studies have shown that kids’ brains develop just as rapidly as their young bodies. A number of these studies have been done locally – the Achievement Gap Initiative (the AGI) at Harvard and programs in the Department of Pediatrics at Boston Medical Center are two examples.

How would you, as a caring parent, like to become familiar with the results of all this research? Well, it’s easier than you may think. Just invest two hours of your time – 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, at the Condon Community Center at 500 D St. You will enjoy videos that completely explain “The Boston Basics” - five simple, powerful ways to get your child

off to a great start learning. Then, any questions you have will be answered. In addition, “The Boston Basics” sponsors have arranged a training session on infant CPR for you.

South Boston Catholic Academy: Can these animals live in South Boston?

Over the past few months, these high achieving students in the Exceptional Learner Program at South Boston Catholic Academy have been working on an inquirybased project to answer the question: Can these animals live in South Boston?

After finding out what their animal eats and drinks, the climate it needs, and other key components to survival, the students made trifold posters and iPad presentations to teach about their animal. If the animal could not live in South Boston, the students had to think critically of adaptations they could make so the

animal could live here. The students came up with very creative ideas, so do not be surprised if you see some unusual animals wandering around in South Boston!

South Boston Catholic Academy is currently accepting applications for all classes preschool though sixth grade. We have Before School and After School Programs available and have small class size, and high acceptance rate to Parochial, Private and Boston Exam Schools.
