The South Boston Allied War Veterans Council, which has organized our annual St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade since 1947, held a news conference on Dorchester Heights last week. The topic was the unfortu-

nate decision by the City of Boston to cut the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade route in half.

So, last Wednesday afternoon, members of the Veterans Council and a significant cross-section of Boston’s media gathered at the bottom of the west-facing main staircase into Dorchester Heights National Park and the Evacuation Day Monument. That is “Where the Mayflower meets the Shamrock,” a quote from the monument’s dedication speech 114 years ago.

If you are new to South Boston, you may not yet know the history behind this monument. Gen. George Washington, Gen. John Thomas, and Maj. Henry Knox secretly set cannons captured from Fort Ticonderoga by Ethan Allen on Dorchester Heights at night.

That emplacement forced the British to evacuate Boston on March 17, 1776, the original “Evacuation

Day” 240 years ago. It was the very first colonial victory of the American Revolution – our war of independence. And it happened right here in South Boston.

Bill Desmond opened the news conference, where he spoke of the importance of the parade route, which is laid out to pass the monument (of course), several veterans’ posts, the Gold Star families’

viewing stand, Andrew Square, and so on. Parade organizer Tim Duross explained why proceeding along the full route is essential – disbanding on Farragut Road – made necessary in 2015 because of record snowfall – is difficult and dangerous: “a real mess,” he said.

Perhaps the most important point made during the news conference was the answer to a question from the assembled news media. They specifically asked the Veterans Council if there was any possibility that the parade would be canceled because its route had been cut in half. The council’s reply was a resounding “NO!” The council will not disappoint the people of South Boston or visiting spectators, even as the City of Boston insists upon the shortened route.

Parade route change will help keep neighborhood clean I am in support of the parade route being shortened. It’s nothing against the veterans who served this country so well with many of them paying the ultimate price over the years; they have my utmost respect. But instead it has to do with the fact that many of the parade attendees are totally disrespectful of the city by throwing trash, empty beer cups, pizza plates, paper bags and all other kinds of

trash on the streets and sidewalks and on people’s private property without thinking about who ends up having to clean that mess up.

And how about the fact that a lot of people from other communities come over and park their cars here the night before the parade and stay overnight with their friends who live here, which drastically cuts the number of available parking spots

for the residents of South Boston who live here and who still need a place to park here the night before the parade.

Do the parade organizers care about that? Have they done anything to address that?

Not to mention people urinating in public and the inevitable street fights that end up breaking out because a lot of the immature punks who think they’re tough guys don’t know how to handle their booze.

I, for one, am fed up with this every

year and as far as I’m concerned the goddamn thing should be held in downtown instead of in South Boston.

It’s nothing but an excuse for a drunkfest once a year.

Why should anyone in their right mind pay upwards of $500,000 for a condo or a house around here to have to deal with this garbage every March?

I applaud (Mayor) Marty Walsh for shortening the route and I hope he will do away with it altogther. Sooner if not later.

Readers react to parade route change Parade belongs to the community , not city hall I think changing the route of the Evacuation/St. Patrick Day parade in South Boston this year by city officials without much discussion with the folks who actually do all the heavy lifting of organizing and raising money to finance it seems pretty disrespectful to the community.

This is the community’s celebration and not something for politicians to take over. Last year’s new parade route was created due to the heavy amount of snow that took over the city. This year, there is no snow so the parade should have reverted to the 2014 parade.

Years ago, the Allied Veterans Council rerouted the parade and reversed the parade flow. Today, the parade starts at Broadway station. Years ago, it started at Andrew Square. The route was changed by the community for public safety issues and rowdiness.

Heights to honor Evacuation Day and General George Washington, this is their right. The last thing we need is politicians taking all the fun out of what should be a fun day for all.

As someone who worked on the Bunker Hill Day parade years ago when I lived in Charlestown, I would have been irate if the city wouldn’t allow the parade to march around the Bunker Hill Monument. It is a given to connect the Bunker Hill parade with the monument. Similarly, how can South Boston have its parade and not pass by the site of the March 17, 1776 British evacuation of Boston?

Right now, I am a member of the 2016 East Boston Columbus Day Parade Committee. All of these parades belong to the respective communities and not to City Hall.

I am writing to express my disappointment in the cancellation of the parade route through Dorchester Heights and Telegraph Street. As a resident of Telegraph Street, I look forward to that day when I get all my family together at my home for good food, music and a lot of laughs. There are a lot of families on the street that feel the same way that I do. East and West Broadway will be a nightmare by eliminating the old route that the parade once traveled. I was in total agreement with last year’s decision, but I am totally

disgusted with this year’s proposal!

They are trying to say it will be a cost savings, but they had no problem spending all that money in snow removal last year for the Patriots parade. What was the final cost on that? In closing, would you let Bill know that the majority of residents in Thomas Park (Dorchester Heights) would like to keep to the old traditions. After all, isn’t that where it started?

Last-minute decision is an ‘attack on S outhie’s traditions and Irish culture’ I am a life-long Boston resident who attended Boston Public Schools.

I am also a proud first-generation Irish-American whose parents came to this country to make a better life; and after working hard, they were able to move in 1976 from their double-decker in Mission Hill to their single-family home in West Roxbury, where they still reside. I currently live, and am a home-owner, on Telegraph Street in South Boston. I am also a 17-year veteran of law enforcement.

I am extremely disappointed to hear that Mayor Walsh has made a lastminute decision to disregard tradition, and to dramatically cut the South Boston parade route down to just East and West Broadway, thus taking away the only parts of the parade route that are actually family-oriented and safe.

Every year, I, along with my surrounding neighbors, have our loved ones come in for the St. Patrick’s Day celebration. This consists of my elderly parents and their friends sitting and enjoying the parade from folding chairs in front of my house, as my nieces and nephews and their young friend’s run back and forth collecting lollipops tossed from the parade passers-by and floats. This area, including the Dorchester Heights Monument, is a place where loads of other young families from other parts of the city come to lay out a blanket to watch the parade, as they escape the chaos and safety-issues that exist over on East and West Broadway. I also often see my neighbors opening

their doors to these same parents of little kids to use their bathroom; and on cold parade days, to just warm up for a few minutes. We take pride in celebrating our Irish culture that day, and watching the neighborhood come together. Family culture has already been dramatically diminished over the least several years in South Boston.

Why would Mayor Walsh and Boston Police Commissioner Evans want to take that family component away from the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade?

The news said it would be done to save money on police presence and to avoid safety-issues? So let me get this straight – taking away the only part of the route that is considered safe and family-oriented, and then expecting parents, grandparents and young children to squeeze onto the sidewalks of East and West Broadway with crowds that will be 20 to 30 people deep – areas that are known to be high-traffic areas for intoxicated youth who are drinking, fist-fighting, and urinating in public, is a safer situation?

I am absolutely disappointed and disgusted with Mayor Walsh’s decision and I, along with many others, consider it to be an attack on Southie’s traditions and Irish culture. I suggest that his support staff strongly encourage him to reconsider this unfortunate decision, as it will not be forgotten.

“Irish Amnesia” is a very real thing, especially while standing in a voting booth.

South Boston swimmers participate in Shamrock Splash

Save the Harbor/Save the Bay is a private, nonprofit that has devoted enormous effort to cleaning up the beaches in and around the City of Boston – coast to coast, from Nantasket to Nahant. And it has worked.

The beaches of Boston are clean enough for swimming almost every day of the year, and the beaches of South Boston are the cleanest of all.

Last Sunday, the nonprofit held a fundraising event at the Curley Community Center. It was the Harpoon “Shamrock Splash,” a polar plunge emceed by SHSB’s hardworking Bruce Berman, who took the plunge himself.

Costumes were the order of the day. The photos above could not capture them all, but you get the idea. There were lobsters, Picts, colleens, superheroes, leprechauns, and

dressed-up pets, along with some undecipherable masqueraders. The lobster (female) and the kilted Pict (male) took the first prizes.

The participants, about 300 or so, plunged at noon; it was a quick turn-around. The air wasn’t too unpleasant, but the water still hovered around quite chilly 40 degrees Farenheit.

The Shamrock Splash sponsors deserve mention: There was Harpoon Brewery, of course, and JetBlue’s towering tail section. The Boston Foundation, the Pierce Trust, the Saltonstall Foundation, Comcast, National Grid, Gillette, Russo Marine, MIX 104.1, Boston Centers for Youth & Families, Sullivan’s, DCR Massachusetts, The YMCA, and Keezer Sports all took part.

Think of them while enjoying M Street Beach this summer.

How did South Boston vote in the primary?

Massachusetts was one of a dozen states that voted in primary elections or caucuses on Tuesday, March 1 – Super Tuesday. The state results were largely as predicted by numerous polls: Donald Trump won the Republican primary and Hillary Clinton won the Democratic primary.

Locally, this held true as well.

Trump and Clinton were overwhelmingly the most popular candidates on the Republican and Democratic ballots, respectively, in South Boston.

In South Boston (Wards 6 and 7 in Boston), 8,065 Democratic votes were cast and 2,975 Republican votes were cast in the primary earlier this week.

On the Democratic side, Clinton received 51.57 percent of South Boston’s Democratic votes, while Sen. Bernie Sanders received 45.63 percent. The remaining percent of Democratic votes went to former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley, who suspended his campaign prior to

Super Tuesday, and other candidates, including write-in votes.

On the Republican side, Trump received 45.28 percent of South Boston’s Republican votes, easily surpassing the other candidates on the ballot.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio received 24.2 percent, Ohio Gov. John Kasich received 18.55 percent, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz received 8.07 percent and Dr. Ben Carson received 1.98 percent. The remaining percentage was for write-in votes and candidates who had previously suspended their campaigns, including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Florida governor Jeb Bush, former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore, former New York governor George Pataki, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and Carly Fiorina.

Statewide, Trump received 49.3 percent of Republicans’ votes in the primary, while Clinton received 50.1 percent of Democrats’ votes in the primary, according to the Boston Globe’s results.

Shamrock Awards to be presented next week South Boston Citizens’ Association president Tom McGrath has announced the association’s 2016 recipients of the James M. “Jimmy” Kelly Shamrock Award for Community Service.

One of the 2016 Shamrock Awards will be presented to Patty McCormick, for her selfless efforts in aiding those in need and pitching in at the drop of a hat, for any benefit or worthy cause in the town.

Patty is a lifelong resident of South Boston, and for the past 25 years a proud resident of Andrew Square.

Patty is a 37 year employee of the South Boston Boys & Girls Club.

Her most recent accomplishment at the club is working on the Capital Campaign that resulted in an $11.3 million renovation of the Clubhouse on the corner of “F” and West Sixth Streets, ensuring that the South Boston neighborhood will continue the strong tradition of providing services to children ages 6 to 18.

“She goes above and beyond in her work with the Club and Andrew Square and all other worthy causes in this town. Patty is all about South Boston and its survival as a community, and her positive attitude and actions reflect her dedication,” McGrath said.

She is a long-time member and officer of the Andrew Square Civic Association. This is one of the older neighborhood associations in the community, founded by John Mullen

and Russell Waterman. As her predecessors did, she works hard to ensure that the Andrew Square neighborhood is respected and represented in the South Boston community.

Patty is also a committee member for Veterans Express, which organized two trips, giving local veterans the opportunity to visit their monuments in Washington, D.C. She is also a committee member for Thomas J. Fitzgerald Post Events, as well as committee member for the following: World War II Memorial, Commander Joseph Murphy Memorial, Doc Reid Memorial and Bob Moakley Memorial.

She also represents Andrew Square, as a member of the Neighborhood Advisory Council for Boston Police District C-6, assisting the Boston Police Department in establishing policing priorities, as well as the strategies to achieve them.

Lastly, she is member of the South Boston Trauma Response Team. This group addresses the serious issues of substance abuse – overdoses and suicides – that affect our neighborhood.

Our next recipients of the Jimmy Kelly Shamrock Award are Chris Flaherty, Andrew Lane and Ryan Long,

Chris Flaherty went on a paddleboard in an attempt to rescue him.

But as The Boston Globe reported, Malone was nowhere to be found by the time Flaherty reached him. But three teenagers who were out on a powerboat at the time – 17-year-old Joey Binda, 18-year-old John Feeney and 17-year-old Elliott Chauvet – spotted Flaherty calling for help in the search and raced to him.

When Flaherty told the teens that Malone had disappeared, they began searching. Together they found the nearly drowned and now-unconscious man, and the teens loaded him onto the boat to bring them back to shore.

The Boston Globe recounted details of the harrowing rescue: “Once they had Malone onboard, Flaherty told Binda, who was driving the boat, ‘Get him to shore as fast as you can.’

“Feeney and Chauvet assisted Flaherty in performing CPR on Malone, while the boat raced to meet two other off-duty firefighters, Ryan Long

and Andrew Lane, at the bathhouse.

The two firefighters were waiting with a defibrillator they had retrieved from the building.”

McGrath stated, “These three young men are an asset to our community, and went well above and beyond in their work as Boston firefighters.

Knowing the training these men have received from the department should make us all feel better that these men are true first responders living in our community.”

“It gives me great pleasure to announce these awards,” said McGrath.

“These are truly dedicated and committed individuals who have contributed so much in their own unique ways. It is fitting for the Citizens’ Association, and the South Boston community, to honor these individuals. We will be announcing the remaining award winners next week.”

The awards will be presented at the association’s 136th Annual Evacuation Day Banquet, to be held on Friday, March 18, with a reception from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Curragh’s Fancy will provide the entertainment, along with a host of special dignitaries. McGrath cautioned that tickets are sure to be purchased at a good pace, with so many of South Boston’s most valued community leaders receiving awards.

Kevin Ryan to receive John W. McCormack Award South Boston Citizens’ Association President Tom McGrath is pleased to announce that Kevin Ryan has been chosen to receive the John W. McCormack Award at the South Boston Citizens’ Association’s 136th Annual Evacuation Day Banquet, March 18. “It is an honor for the association to present this award to Kevin for his countless contributions to the betterment of South Boston, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the United States for well over 30 years,” McGrath said.

In 1982, Kevin Ryan moved to Washington, D.C. with the assistance of then Congressman Joe Moakley to work at the U.S. House of Representatives Post Office.

In 1983, Moakley appointed Ryan

to work as a legislative assistant on the Subcommittee on the Rules of the House. In 1989, after Congressman Moakley was named Chairman of the House Rules Committee, Ryan was promoted to the staff of the House Rules Committee serving as a House Floor Assistant to the Committee and Congressman Moakley.

In 1996, Ryan was appointed Chief of Staff for Congressman Moakley, where he served until Congressman Moakley passed away in May 2001.

Upon his election to Congress in October 2001, Congressman Stephen Lynch appointed Ryan as his chief of staff, where Kevin is currently serving. Ryan has worked with the South Boston Community Health Center, the Cushing House,

as well as a number of local elected officials in helping them identify federal funding opportunities and assisting them in navigating through the federal agencies in Washington, D.C. In addition, he has worked with the South Boston Veterans groups when the veterans come to Washington, D.C., to tour the WWII, Korean and Vietnam War Memorials.

Kevin Ryan is a member of the board of directors for the John Joseph Moakley Scholarship Committee, which has awarded nearly $2 million in scholarships awards to the students of the 8th and 9th Congressional Districts, including dozens of South Boston students.

Ryan grew up in the Old Colony Housing Projects with his four sisters

- Kathy Ryan, Karen MacDougall, Terry White, and Kelly Fullam -and is a graduate of South Boston High, Class of 1975. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Averett University and a master’s degree in Government from Johns Hopkins University.

Ryan is the son of Terry and Rob Ryan, is married to Laurie Ryan, and is the proud father of Christian Ryan.

Two South Boston banks robbed in one week

East Boston Savings Bank in South Boston was robbed Friday morning.

The bank at 708 East Broadway was robbed at 8:44 a.m. Friday, March 4, Boston Police Depart-

ment spokesperson Myesha Henderson confirmed. A District C-6 detective alerted South Boston Online, a neighboring business, around 9:30 a.m. that the bank had been robbed.

according to Henderson, passed a note to a teller.

The suspect left the bank on foot, according to the detective, and was headed west on Broadway.

Boston Police Department officials were seen on East Broadway, speaking with individuals on the street and employeees of local businesses Friday morning.

The robbery occurred shortly after the bank’s opening. According to its website, the bank opens at 8:30 a.m.

This was not the first bank robbery in South Boston this week.

On Saturday, Feb. 27, East Boston Savings Bank at 430 West Broadway was robbed at 9:27 a.m., Henderson said. That branch, according to the bank’s website, opens at 9 a.m. on Saturdays.

There are two suspects involved in this robbery, both men, she said. One was wearing a baseball hat, gray hooded sweatshirt and jeans, and the other was dressed all in black. They did not show weapons, Henderson said, and left with an undetermined amount.

“There’s no indication that they’re related. They’re both active and ongoing,” Henderson said of the two robberies.

The Boston Police Department posts crime statistics online through the week. According to those statistics, these two robberies were the only bank robberies in the city of Boston last week, though there were a number of street and other robberies reported.

As of Monday afternoon, there were no updates on either of these robberies, Henderson said.

In celebration of Evacuation week festivities in South Boston, on Sunday, March 6, enthusiastic bowlers journeyed up to the South Boston Bowlarama on East Broadway to enjoy an afternoon of bowling and fun with friends. This annual bowling event, free to the adult-public, is sponsored by the

South Boston Citizens’ Association.

Representatives from the association - Cheryl Joyce, Andrea Flaherty, Rich DeVoe, and Pauline Bare -were present coordinating this adult event that was free to those who attended. Bowling alley times were donated by Bowlarama. The beer was free and donated

by Coors Light, Miller Light and Bud Light. Free pizza was also thrown in to keep the bowlers happy and energetic.

These five bowlers were all smiles at the Bowlarama.

Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg joined Boston Police Commissioner William Evans in honoring Officer John Moynihan, who survived being shot in the line of duty last year, with the Hero’s Award at the Boston Police Foundation’s Annual Gala at the Westin Waterfront Hotel in Boston. Wahlberg and Berg are frequent collaborators with such films as “Lone Survivor,” the upcoming Deepwater Horizon and they are about to enter production on “Patriots Day,” a film that will focus on the heroics of many in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings. While some of their heroic characters will be composites of several individuals, they are all based on real life events and include local citizens, first responders and law enforcement - many of whom were members of the Boston Police Department.

Tough loss for Gate of Heaven in state tournament

Fitzgerald Post is host to parade fundraiser

It’s the season: the 2016 paraders gathered at the Thomas J. Fitzgerald Post, VFW No. 561, on Fourth Street last Saturday afternoon. The occasion was a fundraising event in support of the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade. As you can see, it was a jam-packed, standing room only event. Among those who greeted the many guests were the brothers Mullen, Jim and John, Post Commander Ed Flynn, and Tommy Florentino, the Fitzy Post’s trumpeter extraordinaire. On Monday evening, March 7, the annual Evacuation week free throw competition, sponsored by the South Boston Citizens’ Association and the Tynan Community Center, was held at the Tynan gymnasium. Tynan Program Supervisor Kathy Davis and her staff coordinated the event and Tynan Administrative Coordinator John Lydon photographed the event.

Former mayor of Boston and ambassador to the Vatican Ray Flynn was present to help out, along with South Boston Citizens’ Association members Bernard O’Donnell and his son, Bernard.

Girls end their house league season in all-star fashion

On Saturday, March 5, at the Walsh Center gym, the Gate of Heaven CYO instructional league and the John “Injun” Horan Memorial Girls’ House League held their end of the season all-star games.

In the opening tilt, the instructional league all-stars, the Red Raiders defeated the Blue Bombers 12-6. In the John “Injun” Horan Girls’ League all-star game, the Blue Birds eked out a hard fought victory against the White Wonders, 35-33.

In the opening minutes of the first half, the Blue Birds took an early 8-2 lead. The White Wonders responded and went on an 8-0 run to take the lead, 10-8. The game was tied up, 14-14, at the half. In the second half, the White Wonders took a 30-24 lead. But the Blue Birds weren’t ready to fly away. They fought back, went on a 6-0 run, and tied it up, 30-30.

Both teams had an opportunity to score in the final 30 seconds, but it was tied at the end of regulation play, forcing an OT period. In overtime the Blue Birds prevailed and went home with a two-point victory.

For the White Wonders, Kate Donovan was in the zone as she

netted 16 points. Sarah Day scored eight points while Cara DiMaggio scored six points. For the Blue Birds, Mary Kate Hart scored 14 points. And Caitlyn Fitzgerald scored eight points. Abby Colvin netted seven points, including a crucial three pointer, while Kaylee Flaherty contributed four points in the win.

The coaches in the Horan League are Sean Flaherty, Jennifer Evans, Margaret Keaveny, Allison Baker, Hannah Powers, and Maggie Hart. Barbara Kelly also came out of retirement and was back on the floor with the instructional league players and the other instructional league coaches.

Marie Laundry, who oversees the Horan League, wanted to thank those who make this program a reality.

“I would like to thank all the coaches and instructors,” league commissioner Marie Laundry said. “They spend so much time and deserve to be recognized.

“I also want to thank Kevin Lally, Sean Monahan and John McGahan from the Gavin House,” she said. “ W i t h o u t their commitment, this program wouldn’t exist and the kids would be missing this opportunity to play ball and have fun doing it.”

South Boston Mites capture hockey jamboree Congratulations to the South Boston Mite 2 team for capturing the Providence Bruins Mite 2 jamboree at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence Rhode Island.

The kids from Southie went undefeated as they played and beat teams from Rhode Island, Connecticut,and New Jersey.

South Boston started off itsmagical ride with Duncan Crowley netting the first goal of the tournament and the team never looked back. Lindsay Fox soon followed with the eventual game winner. Southie prevailed with a 2-1 victory over SWS Firehawks of Rhode Island. Stellar defense by Will Reidy and incredible goaltending by Ryan McGarrell propelled Southie to their first victory of the afternoon.

The next game turned out to be a barn burner as Southie faced off

against a worthy opponent in the Connecticut Bulldogs and came out on top 5-4.

Henry DiNatale provided the offensive firepower as he netted two huge goals to put Southie ahead. The brothers Greeley, Kyle and Jake, both came to play as each had a goal a piece, and Michael Greene had the game winner.

In the final game of the jamboree, the Southie team had to take on a formidable opponent in the New Jersey Ice Cats who were looking to take the title back to the Garden state, but the determined kids from home wouldn’t be denied. Southie jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the very first shift on a goals from Kyle Greeley both assisted

Gate of Heaven boys team wins CYO Vicariate Tournament Championship

The Saint Agatha’s fifth and sixth grade boys’ travel team was coached by David Clifford and Vinnie Gratch.

On Sunday, March 7, at Saint Agatha’s school gymnasium in Milton, the Gate of Heaven CYO fifth and sixth grade boys’ travel team defeated Saint Agatha’s of Milton, 27-14, to capture the CYO Vicariate Tournament Championship.

Gatey took an early 9-2 lead and led at the half, 11-6. In the second half, Gatey went on a 9-5 run to take

a 20-11 lead and went home with the championship medals and trophy.

For Gatey, Conor Strickland was unstoppable as he netted 13 points, including one three-pointer from downtown. Max Hogan blocked two shots, had a handful of rebounds and scored six points. It was without doubt the best game he played all season as he blocked up the middle and gobbled up the rebounds. Slick lefty guard Owen Donovan also had

a solid game, hitting a crucial three pointer and scoring six points. Chris Hosea contributed a deuce in the victory and performed a tremendous victory hoop dance up the court.

The entire team played well and was focused throughout the game.

Rookie coach Mark Donovan, who led his team to an 11-2 regular season record, was proud of his

players.

“I’m happy and proud of these kids,” Donovan said. “They played unselfishly and as a team should.

They’re young and they’re going to enjoy much more success in hoop if they work hard at it and develop their game as they go along. I was fortunate to be part of this and to get to know these kids.”

Citizens’ Association announces weekend events This Saturday, March 12, the Annual Tommy and Eddie Butler Senior Salute will take place at St. Monica’s Church Hall at 11 a.m.

This event is sponsored by Mayor Marty Walsh and the South Boston Citizens’ Association. Entertainment, transportation (Yankee Bus) and corned beef dinner will be provided.

This Sunday, March 13 at the newly renovated Murphy Skating Rink will be the Ice-O-Rama. Boys and girls 14 and under are invited to attend. Events will begin around 10:15 a.m., after the John Cunniff Shamrock shoot-out hockey game. Miss Ice-o-Rama, speed skating and a puck shooting competition will also take place.

BRA accepting comments on proposed housing project The South Boston Community Development Corporation and the Boston Redevelopment Authority hosted a neighborhood meeting on March 3 about the proposed elderly housing on an unused Boston Housing Authority lot on O’Connor Way. The 20 or so attendees included abutters and members of Andrew Square Civic Association, BHA and architects for the SBNDC. The project proposes 47 residence units. While there is no question that affordable housing, especially for the elderly, is a critical need in Boston, zoning exemptions and permissions will be required. The BRA’s comment period on this project ends, Friday, March 11.

Twenty-five public-spirited people attended the Narcan training session on Monday, which was sponsored by the Action Center in the Laboure Conference Room. As you certainly know, Boston, and indeed all of Massachusetts, are in the grip of a heroin/ opioid overdose epidemic.

Narcan, also known as Naloxone, is quick, effective remedy for opioid overdoses. After an hour or two of training, police, firefighters, EMS personnel, health professionals and even properly trained laypersons can administer it. Narcan is frequently administered as a nasal spray.
