South Boston Mayoral Campaign off to a Great Start

ast night at Loco on West Broadway, Jay Fallon hosted an evening of fundraising for the two Mayoral candidates – Pat Dillon and Romina Bendo. Jay, who is doing an excellent job of raising funds for the 2022 St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade, insisted that last night should be known as a “Primary” in the race to elect the 2022 Mayor of South Boston. Both Romina and Pat appear to be excellent, supercharged candidates, either of whom would make wonderful Mayors this year. They willingly worked together yesterday evening and had obviously become “frienemies”.

This Mayoral party was actually the first official event of this year’s South Boston Parade Season. Yes, of course the SBCA’s “Unsung Heroes” Kickoff Breakfast

takes place Saturday morning.

And Sully’s will open on Saturday.

But it was good (!) to attend the Mayoral “Primary”, and then begin to anticipate our first Parade in two years. Last night’s enthusiasm really started the Season going.

Over a hundred people stopped by the “Primary”. Rep. David Biele visited so he could salute and encourage both Mayoral candidates.

Raff les, tickets, and drawings were featured at the fundraising festivities – one drawing earned a guest $350. A pleasant surprise was the visit by Christina Andrade, the last Mayor of South Boston, along with her husband Adam. They are expecting a little girl early in April; they won one of the raffles last night.

At the end of the “Primary” evening, Pat Dillon thanked the crowd at Loco for their support, and spoke about how he remembered the Parade from

JOKR curates its selections based on the communities in which it operates, Trerotola said. For example, if JOKR notices more app sessions in the morning hours, the company might add more traditional breakfast items in that neighborhood.

Customers place orders on the mobile app for delivery via e-bikes or in-store pickup. “We use e-bikes as they are not only more convenient than using a vehicle but also reduce traffic and reduce JOK R’s carbon footprint,” Trerotola sa id.

JOKR workers are all local full-time W-2 employees who get paid fair wages and benefits.

“The JOK R communit y lives and works in the same nei g hb orho o d s we s er ve ,

and as such the safety of our riders, our neighbors, and our customers is of paramount importance,” Trerotola said.

“O u r c u s tomer s love the convenience we of fer, how friendly our riders are, and how we are decreasing t ra f f ic by u sing elec t ric bikes, which are also much friendlier for the environment.”

Trerotola continued: “We hope that our commitment to sustainability will inspire and lead every step of our decision-ma k ing a nd goa lsetting, so that together we can achieve the positive impact we want to see in the world.”

JOKR is always testing and learning, ensuring it is serving the needs of its communities.

“Through our interactions with the Southie community and our neighbors, we are excited to be making some additional c h a nge s,” Trerotol a s a id .

In the next few months, those changes include implementing the option of paying with food stamps, to improve access for neighbors who don’t necessarily have a credit card to pay in the app, and creating a much more inviting front of house for people to come into the store and get their groceries in a seamless pick-up experience.

Creating JOK R wa s a natural progression, Trerotola said. It was built by a team that has significant experience and

passion in building consumer businesses and is intrigued by the idea of making customers’ lives easier and more enjoyable.

“We identified a need for JOKR as consumers were seeing a gap in what they wanted vs. what they were being offered,” Trerotola said. “JOKR bridges the gap between data science a nd procurement, of fering customers personalized offerings based on their previous shopping behaviors. By tapping into local producers and brands, we can predict what customers need and when they will need it.”

JOK R currently partners wit h loc a l producers a nd stores to provide access to unique offerings. In South Boston, OTTO Pizza and J.P. Licks are examples of how JOK R strives to meet the persona lized needs of each community in which it operates by bringing in local favorites.

JOK R also s upp or t s smaller local suppliers that are mission-driven and have amazing products. Bisousweet, Kayak, and Mom’s Munchies are three local woman-owned companies that JOKR recently partnered with to increase the assortment of baked goods.

The South Boston store allows JOKR to serve the full Southie and Seaport community, so the company doesn’t need another store in this area, Trerotola said. JOK R will

grow in the current location by having t he fol low ing: A n expanded assortment of products that will get better with time as JOKR uses sales data to grow in categories that customers appreciate the most.

T

he fourth and final ZOOM meeting by Accordia Partners LLC concerning the massive Dorchester Bay City (the “DBC”) Project took place Thursday evening, February 17. The topics in this fourth meeting concerned “Urban Design, Open Space, and Sustainability”. Specific issues included access by all methods, environmental considerations, open

1.- “Transportation and Infrastructure”.

2.- “Housing, Economic Development”.

3.- “Public Realm Improvements and Place-Making”.

In addition, it’s useful to recall that Dorchester Bay City will occupy 36 acres on Harbor Point that had once been occupied by the Bayside Expo Center and is still partly occupied by the Boston Teachers Union (the BTU). The larger portion of this site stretches from the Mothers Rest cupola along the scenic and much-used bayside called “Dorchester Shores”; it is bordered on the southeast by the Harbor Point Housing Development. Most of this

part of DBC site’s area is covered by gravel and asphalt paving left behind when the Expo Center was demolished. The second, somewhat smaller portion of the DBC site lies within the triangle formed by the intersection of Morrissey Boulevard and Mt. Vernon Street.

The key topics of the February 17 ZOOM meeting are listed below: Roadways within the DBC project site will be separated into three categories. The first category will consist of a few very wide multi-purpose, multi-level roads; the second and third categories will be for onsite residential and business access. Walking and biking paths will extend everywhere.

Especially notable was the proposed Boardwalk, a “center spine” that will link public ways on the western edge of DBC to the Shores on the east.

The buildings and support structures will be designed so as to be carbon-free (no fossil fuels). They’ll also be designed to “LEED Gold” specifications (“LEED” stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Structural materials will

all be recyclable and renewable.

Protection from f looding due to more severe storms and sea level rise was described. Overall, with significant open green and wider roads and walkways, about one-half of the entire 36-acre DBC site will be out-of-doors and open to public access. Accordia’s presentation totaled 45 minutes; it seemed quite thorough.

Many pertinent issues were brought up during the Q-and-A period at the end of this session. For example, Chris Mancini from Save the Harbor/Save the Bay asked for more information about seasonal, twelve-month usage of the beaches, use of the site for educational programs, and daily access to everyone (“inclusivity”). Other questions dealt with programmed maintenance, all-electric utilities, and the huge challenge presented by the added traffic as the DBC Project is developed and built.

Even though it wasn’t part of this particular ZOOM session, many comments came up concerning that critical Boston issue of housing “affordability”.

Thirty-six acres of gravel and asphalt will soon become Dorchester Bay City.

Robert Shure and South Boston’s Memorials

R

obert Shure is a sculptor.

He is currently engaged in renewing and recreating the USS Kearsarge Memorial, which will be reinstalled and then rededicated at South Boston’s Marine Park late in the spring or early this summer. This is a project funded

by Boston’s CPA, our Community Preservation Act, and organized by the SBAW VC – the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council, commanded by Dave Falvey. South Boston Online brief ly reported on this in our last issue – February 17, page 5.

We said Robert is a sculptor.

Originally from Brooklyn, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts cum laude in sculpture from New York City’s Institute of Technology; he was awarded their “Gold Medal in Sculpture”.

He then went on to study in Boston at the Museum of Fine

Arts and Tufts University. Robert received his MFA degree, also cum laude, in sculpture in 1973.

His original sculptures have since been exhibited at the DeCordova Museum and South Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art. Since graduating more than 40 years ago, Robert’s professional experience has truly been extensive; his many public works of art are highly regarded.

He first went to work in Boston’s traditional Tavern Road Studio founded by Arcangelo Cascieri and Adio di Biccari, both of whom had international reputations in public art. He also worked with Lino Guist, who had bought into the local Caproni Company. In the 1990s, Robert combined these enterprises into a single company in Woburn he now calls Skylight Studios, Inc. It’s one of the largest and most active studios of its kind in the country. Robert is its President and Sculptor; he still takes an active, hands-on part in all of Skylight Studios’ projects.

In recent years, Robert has participated in a half-dozen local projects specifically located here in South Boston. He sculpted the working model for our Korean War Memoria l overlook ing Dorchester Bay, and he created the Memorial to Firefighter Bob Green on Castle Island. Robert advised on the cannon installation in Fort Independence; designed, managed, and built South Boston’s

World War II Memorial; and will be completing Marine Park’s new USS Kearsarge Memorial with its trademark anchor over the next few months. And if you’ve been Downtown lately, you might have noticed that the Memorial on Boston Common across from the State House has been completely restored. That’s the striking relief

by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, a Memorial depicting Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Civil War Regiment he led. Its restoration was just one of Robert’s many recent Skylight Studios projects.

When the date has been fixed, you are encouraged to attend the rededication of the

USS Kearsarge Memorial, the latest project by Robert Shure and Skylight Studios in South Boston.

Read the Memorial’s plaques; you’ll see that the name “USS Kearsarge” goes back to the Civil War. The anchor itself, which comes from the second “USS Kearsarge”, weighs a ton – 2,000 pounds – and was forged in 1900

by Baldt Anchor Co. in Chester, Pennsylvania. It’ll be rigged into place by Shaughnessy Crane.

The Memorial will then be rededicated to actions of the U.S. Navy in the Spanish-American War and in World War I, as well as to all U.S. Navy veterans who have ever served in combat.

Current FPAC Exhibit

T

he F PAC (t he For t Point A r ts Communit y) has recently been exhibiting works, 17 of them, by three artists – Kim Carlino, Michele Lauriat, and Jane Sherill – in their lower f loor FPAC Gallery at 300 Summer Street. All three of these artists work in the abstract – semi-abstract in the five works by Lauriat – but their different approaches, as well as their varied materials, present visual challenges. They depict our universe, each in her own skilled way, leading viewers into taking a new look at how we ourselves view things.

Carlino’s four works entitled “Territorial Expansions” blend geometric and amorphous forms with brilliant colors and carefully drawn lines that are used to shape her amorphous forms (see the photo). It’s intriguing to visually explore the balances she creates, and how her lines and vivid colors are confined to individual types of forms. She calls this “interconnectedness”. Her base material, “yupo”, is actually poly propylene, a poly mer that has been transformed into a paper-like substance.

The five large paintings by Lauriat are actually intimate landscapes. Four of these five were from a series she calls “Fells Woods” (local?). These draw the eye into the center middle of her large, dense paintings, which use mixed media with the bright-but-opaque colors of fall. She mentions learning to paint in small strokes, which is really a form of “pointilliste” execution. That technique is what leads to the feeling that your eye is being physically d raw n into her color f u l, seemingly complex paintings.

The eight works by Sherrill are pen-and-ink drawings on a material called Duralar, a

thin, translucent, paper-like plastic sheet, which accepts the inks being used. These individually drawn sheets can be piled up to create a work that is “multiple” in nature. If these works are drawn indoors, the “piling-up” can become a kind of personal history about things past. Sherrill is perhaps best known for her seascapes; these

small drawings show another one of her artistic insights.

This was an intriguing small exhibit, as are most of the events in the FPAC Gallery. It must be stated, however, that the curating was lacking. Failure to label the exhibit’s titles or artists made it difficult to keep them straight at first. Nor were there adequate hand-out materials for reference.

Update to COVID-19 Policies

M

ayor Michelle Wu and Dr. Bisola Ojikutu announced that the City’s B Together policy, which requires patrons and staff of certain indoor spaces to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19, will be lifted effective immediately. Today’s public health data shows Boston has a 4.0% community positivity rate; 90.7% occupancy rate of adult ICU beds, and 7-day average of adult COVID-19 hospitalizations at 195.9 per day, falling below all three previously announced thresholds.

“The public health data shows that we’re ready to take this step in our recovery,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “This news highlights how much progress we’ve made in our fight against COVID-19 thanks to vaccines & boosters—which have always been our most effective weapon against the pandemic. It’s a win for every Bostonian who’s done their part to keep our communities safe, and we have to keep going. I want to thank all

Urban Forest Plan Virtual Open House March 14

esidents interested in the future of trees in Boston are invited to join the Boston Parks and Recreation Department for a virtual conversation about the progress of the Urban Forest Plan on Monday, March 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. To join the discussion, follow the event link at boston.gov/urban-forest-plan.

Boston’s f irst ever Urban Forest Plan will help prioritize, preser ve, and grow the tree canopy throughout Boston for decades to come. In Boston, all residents depend on the many benefits provided by the trees in our urban forest. The goal is to create a strategic plan based on science and defined by the needs and desires of the community to ensure t hat t he urba n forest will be better managed both today and in the future.
