Valentine’s Day, 2020

S

outh Boston has the privilege of celebrating – really celebrating – several saints’ feast days during our seemingly interminable winter times. Of course, there’s Saint Nicholas in December and his strong presence during our Christmastime as “Santa Claus”, which is 17th Century Dutch for Saint Nicholas.

And the celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day has spread so far and wide – as have emigrants from Ireland – that entire nations all over the world

observe Patrick’s March 17 feast day with parades, dances, musicals, and, well, feasting. And the feast days of both Nicholas and Patrick are bracketed by the American Thanksgiving here in late autumn, and by Easter in much of the Western world each spring.

And there’s a third saint’s day that we observe just past the middle of winter.

We are obviously referring to Valentine’s Day tomorrow on February 14.

It’s possible that the roots of Valentine’s Day go back further than either Nicholas’ or Patrick’s Day. One story tells of a Bishop named Valentine, who was beheaded by Claudius the Goth in 269 A.D. (or C.E., if you wish) and was eventually canonized a saint.

There may well have been more than one early Christian martyr named Valentine. That name means “strong”, which was very popular back then and was used by both men and women in Roman times. And the martyred Bishop was said to have signed his letters to his congregation “From your Valentine”.

100 Days Smarter

By Frank Galligan, Principal of St. Peter Academy The 100th day of school at St. Peter Academy was celebrated on Monday, February 10, 2020. Students and teachers enjoyed dressing up as 100 year-old caricatures of themselves – donning white wigs or baby-powdered hair, with bathrobes, mustaches, and canes. Many students brought in 100 items from home, ranging from pennies, paperclips, buttons, and candies to showcase to faculty and friends. Special treats were distributed throughout the day to make it even more special for everyone involved. It was a wonderful acknowledgement of 100 days spent together learning, growing, and having fun as a close-knit school community!

Harry was the previous owner of the L Street Tavern and Farragut House. Harry›s dedication to South Boston is memorialized by the naming of the Harry Uhlman Bandstand at Marine Park.

Letter to the Editor

L

ast week’s South Boston Online had a very interesting page one story on a recent proposal for a marijuana dispensary on East First Street by K Street. Marijuana shops are no longer a debate question but a reality. Now we are talking about sites to sell recreational marijuana.

However, as Rick Winterson pointed out, there is still a federal law on the books that makes it a felony to have marijuana on your person. This federal law was never abolished but the federal g o v e r n m e nt a p p a r e nt l y enforce this law any longer.

Now states across the country are legally making the possession of

weed as within the law here in Massachusetts and almost everywhere else in America.

Writer Winterson did make a valid point when he asked, What if the Federal laws about marijuana starts being enforced once again?: However, what Rick points out is how individual cities and states have decided to make their own laws regardless of existing federal laws that are nationwide. If the federal government stays quiet on laws being changed by whoever whenever, it makes a mockery of the law in its entirety. There is movement across America. It started with same-sex marriage, then it moved to illegal immigrants, then the legalization

of marijuana one area at a time and finally, the latest is second a mend ment s a nc t u a r ie s .

If there is a federal law that is being debated, it is up to Capitol Hill and the White House to decide keeping the law or abolishing it. Doesn’t life get disrupted if you can have marijuana on you in one state but instantly become a criminal when you cross over into another state, isn’t that simply stupid?

Recently, the NY Times editorialized against 2nd Amendment Sanctuaries in various states counties or municipalities and also compares illegal immigration sanctuaries, it shows whether being used

by liberals or conservatives, sanctuaries that violate federal laws can get quite messy and should be deemed illegal whatever the cause.

The NY Times had no choice, it couldn’t oppose one kind of sanctuary while backing another.

Meanwhile, it is neither here or there for recreational (or medical) marijuana dispensaries.

This is here and it is legal. We can only hope that this doesn’t turn into the wild west. The best citizens can do is attend these meetings and make your views heard and understood. Silence is never an option. We all have a say. Stand up and speak out, then hope for the best.

Romantic customs continued to embellish Valentine’s Day. Young bachelors in Medieval England cut out hearts from red cloth, and sewed them to their coats in mid-February to show they were “available” and looking for a wife. That practice is what the old saying,

“He’s wearing his heart on his sleeve”, comes from. In the remoter areas of the American South, Groundhog Day and Valentine’s Day once were celebrated together, occasionally by setting out young green pea plants as seedlings if the weather had become warm enough.

Do you recall Tennessee Ernie Ford’s greeting – “Bless your pea-pickin’ heart”? That saying means something.

Nowadays, we observe Valentine’s Day with cards, candy, flowers, and scarlet hearts (and even with romantic

books and love stories). But has it changed all that much? Valentine’s Day still celebrates romantic love, as did the ancient Romans and the early Christians. In much of the Western world, that Day occurs at a time of year when winter moderates a little and the early signs of a fickle spring begin to show, as it has over the last 15 centuries.

The pertinent French saying is, “Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose”.

In English that means, “The more a thing changes, the more it’s the same thing.

Valentine’s role as the Patron Saint of romantic love also ties in with Roman observances in February, which was the month devoted to the Roman goddess Juno, Jupiter’s wife. Lupercalia, the Roman feast of early spring (among other things), occurred over the Ides of mid-February, and had oral traditions extending back to the founding of Rome.

hristina Andrade, a resident of South Boston since eight years ago and one of our biggest boosters, is originally from Springfield. She attended Siena College, located in New York near Albany, where she earned her degree in Finance. Her job is the Director of Operations at a web development company in Downtown Boston; she rides the Red Line from Broadway Station to work. In the South Boston community, she volunteers at Compass on the Bay. And now, Christina is currently raising money as Mayor of South Boston for the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade on Sunday, March 15.

As you know, the Parade is emphatically dedicated to veterans of America’s Armed Forces. According to Christina (and in her own words

to South Boston Online), “When I first heard about the Mayoral Campaign, I was excited, but then when I learned that the fundraising portion was going to our veterans, it really resonated with me in a different light.” For you see, Christina’s grandfather was a pilot and Lieutenant Commander (USN), who fought in the Korean War. She goes on to say, “My fundraising is a chance to give back to our veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and a chance to give back to a community I love so much. It is an honor and privilege to do both.” Nicely said.

Christina and her husband Adam Hobbs live on F Street. He is a business owner with interests in Provincetown, where the two of them first met. In addition to her career and her community work, she’s a runner who loves to pace herself along Carson Beach. Her other pursuits include dining and various family interests. Christina and Adam are owned by a chocolate Lab named Lincoln (or “Good-Boy” at times). Their dog Lincoln is named after the establishment of the same name on West Broadway, where she and Adam went for supper soon after they first got to South Boston.

Now, this leads to another local story. We have heard that Lincoln,

the restaurant, was so named because a workman found an old greenback $5 bill (from the 1920s) behind a plaster wall during demolition. Of course, being a $5 denomination, it had a picture of Lincoln on it. That was considered a good luck omen, so “Lincoln” became the establishment’s name.

History repeats itself.

Christina is true fan of South Boston. To quote her, she says, “This feels like a real community – a community that really rallies for each other. It’s a place to put my roots down.” Her first fundraiser was at the L Street Tavern late last month. By now, she has already raised $5,000 for the Parade, and she’s very grateful to Susan Woods for her help – Christina calls Susan “The REAL mayor of South Boston”. Annual Timothy Scholarship Hockey Tournament

Gatey Annual Free Throw Contest

This year’s Tournament will be a Battle between Boston and New York.

Both Boston Police and Fire Hockey Teams have agreed to play New York Police and Fire Teams at the Murphy Rink in South Boston on March 13th and 14th, 2020. The format will be Bean pot Style, with the winners facing off against each other and the runner ups facing each other in a consolation game.

The scholarship is focused on raising funds for local students (both boys and girls) from the South Boston neighborhood to assist with their high school tuitions. It is only fitting that the Scholarship Fund is hosting both city ‘s first responders. Many of the players are veterans themselves and are looking forward to joining in our efforts to bring more awareness to the ongoing struggle of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). To date we have awarded over $50,000 in scholarships to deserving students in our community. We are looking for Businesses to assist with gift certificates or raffle prizes.

Families, friends, and neighbors are respectfully invited to attend this wonderful event. A $10 donation is requested at the door to help offset the costs. And this year’s event will once feature the great (Irish) music of Bob Fowkes and Curragh’s Fancy.

The new 2020 Event Chairman will be our State Representative, David Biele.

Michael Donovan, Suffolk County Clerk of Courts (Civil), who for years has supported the efforts to

preserve the historic importance of Evacuation Day, has passed the torch to David. Tommy McGrath said, “As President of the SBCA, it was an honor for me to work side-by-side with Mike to kick off the Annual Evacuation Day festivities. His commitment and involvement with the SBCA and the entire community has been a tremendous asset to me and the Executive Board. Mike assures me that he’ll still be involved with these events. Thank you, Mike!”

Representative David Biele is currently serving the last half of his first term in the House of Representatives. A lifelong resident of South Boston, he grew up playing organized sports while attending St. Peter School and Boston Latin School.

David graduated from Boston College, completing his degree in three years – the first person in his family to receive a college degree. He then attended Boston College Law School, where his workload included representing tenants in housing law cases.

In describing David, Tommy McGrath stated, “I have known Dave since his Little League and Youth Hockey days. Now, I’ll be continuing to work with him on many community issues that will try to improve the quality of life in South Boston.”

David has been deeply engaged for many years with local, community-based programs and volunteer efforts here in South Boston. He currently mentors local youth through the TEAM

Mentoring Program at South Boston’s Laboure Center; he has also served on the Advisory Board for the South Boston Boys & Girls Club. David was the President of the Harr y McDonough Sailing Program and still volunteers with South Boston’s Special Kids and Young Adults.

Prior to entering elected public off ice, David Biele spent four years working in the Massachusetts State House on policy, legislation, and constituent services. He has also been a Hearing Officer for the Department of Public Utilities, developing evidentiary records and crafting legal decisions.

“Snowport” High Season Is Here – Celebrity Skate Nights

T

he Seaport’s ice skating rink, now entitled the “Snowport Winter Village”, or simply “Snowport” for short, is a great place for a solo or a family visit.

It has become a destination for winter entertainment, created by WS Development, and presented by the nearby Fjallraven and Capital One Café.

This is an update on some attractive happenings at Snow port, which they are calling “Celebrity Skate Nights”. In partnership with FMP Productions, Snowport has already brought in NFL offensive lineman Joe Andruzzi to skate with Snowport patrons. Last Saturday morning, Snowport featured Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon, who then stayed

around to take part in fan photos and to sign copies of his book, “Beautiful on the Outside”.

A n appearance by Ray Bourque is scheduled for tonight (Thursday, the 13th) from 6 until 8 p.m. Next week on Thursday evening, February 20 (also 6 to 8 p.m.), Jermaine Wiggins will be visiting. He’s the highperforming tight end who made such a difference in the Pats quest for their first Lombardi Trophy of the century in 2001.

Following him, 2018 Olympic Gold Medalist Amanda Pelkey will visit the rink at Snowport on February 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. Her Celebrity Skate Night visit will be the last, as the Snowport rink will close after hours on March 1.

Admission to the Celebrity Skate Nights is complimentary.

For those who want to skate, there’s a rink fee of $5; skates can be rented as well.

Unique Exhibit at South Boston’s Spoke Gallery

f you would enjoy seeing a local art exhibit that combines truly creative art with extremely skillful crafts, then please plan to visit a multimedia exhibit called “Heirloom”

at the Spoke Gallery (110 K Street, second floor). The admission to “Heirloom” is free; the hours are Tuesday through Friday, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., or by appointment – (617)268-6700, Stephen Hamilton is a painter, textile designer, and mixed-media artist. His

cousin, Stacey Hamilton, is a professional photographer. Together, and using all their talents to the max, they created “Heirloom” – or perhaps “recreated” – the cultural inheritance and incredibly

rich visual language of pre-colonial Africa, using their friends in Boston’s black community as their role models.

Thank You South Boston!

On Wednesday, February 5, at 5:20 p.m., a horrific fire began in a vacant building being renovated at 409 East Seventh Street. In a matter of seconds, it spread to our lifelong home at 407. We were able to get out safely, and this is where the story really begins.

Our East Seventh Street neighbors were outside with coats, shoes, blankets, whatever we needed. They wrapped us in their arms with love and compassion, and comforted us. They opened their homes to us and our tenants, three wonderful young ladies.

They brought toys to entertain, and distract my four-year-old granddaughter.

Before the fire was out, friends were coming and calling from all over South Boston, with offers of help. To say that in the midst of tragedy, there is a silver lining is to minimize all that my family feels today. Our house may be gone, but our hearts are full. Things can be replaced. What can never be replaced are the friends and neighbors in this community.

Thank you to the heroic men and women of the Boston Fire Department. Your professionalism and courage was amazing. Thank you to the Boston Police and EMS, as well as the American Red Cross, who were compassionate and caring in the midst of a chaotic situation.

There are no words to adequately express the gratitude we have to the South Boston community. Friends, neighbors, acquaintances, offering gift cards, cash, apartments, clothing, food, prayers, and the list goes on. We can’t name everyone because the list is too long, and we would be afraid to forget somebody. However, we do want to single out Maureen McCarthy, for her great generosity in opening her home to us.

We don’t know what the future holds, but please know that the kindness and love that you have shown us will warm our hearts forever, and will be our light as we move forward. There is no better place on earth than South Boston.

Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp. is not licensed to treat hazardous waste. Therefore, the Department is issuing a temporary license to Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp. effective 02/03/2020, for a 30-day period that will enable Clean Harbors Environmental Services, a hazardous waste treatment specialist hired by Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp. to perform a one-time on-site hazardous waste treatment action.

Clean Harbors Environmental specialists shall perform a chemical stabilization procedure in accordance with procedures set forth in the documentation enclosed with the license application.

Once treated, the hazardous waste will be safely transported offsite and disposed at an authorized hazardous waste management facility.

NAC Meeting Notes, Feb. 05, 2020

T

he recent NAC (Neighborhood Advisory Council) meeting at BPD Station Six (C-6) was convened at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 5, by Community Services Supervisor Sgt. Steve McNeil. This was the first NAC meeting of 2020; the C-6 Commander, Capt. Joseph Boyle, had been detained at the unfortunate fire on Seventh Street that started just an hour before the meeting.

Sgt. McNeil listed several of the more serious police incidents that occurred in the C-6 area during December, 2019, and January 2020. A few incidents of gunshots have occurred, one of which led to an arrest of a teen, who was in possession of various hard drugs. Another

Commanded by Capt. Joseph Boyle. drug seizure contained 24 bags of fentanyl.

Those involved appeared to be both local residents and non-residents. One of South Boston’s night spots was found to be overcrowded; a couple of fistfights broke out at local watering holes as well. Mention was made of the new “Operation Crosswalk” – an effort to ensure

careless drivers obey the rules concerning pedestrian crossing areas. City Councilor Ed Flynn was present and made it a point to thank C-6 for their “Operation Crosswalk” efforts. South Boston Online would also like to express our thanks for this operation.

Some adverse commentary followed, and the shortage of BPD Officers for three items – construction street blockage, more “Operation Crosswalk” coverage, and details mandated by the marijuana dispensaries were brought up.

R e g a rd i n g “Op er at ion Crosswalk”, in order to make this as effective as possible, jaywalking and other transgressions by pedestrians must also be controlled or eliminated. A question was asked about an FBI “maneuver” here in South Boston. This was apparently the result of attempting to find and arrest an individual connected with a bank robbery.

The NAC meeting adjourned shortly before 7 p.m. It was deemed a successful get-together.

Ribbon-Cutting and Robotics Celebration at MassRobotics

wo weeks ago, on Tuesday, Januar y 28, MassRobotics formally opened its new high-tech offices, workshops, and laboratories in the 12 Channel Street building, which are located in South Boston’s Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park.

The opening was a high-spirited event that included enthusiastic comments from MassRobotics personnel along with sincere welcoming remarks from Gov. Charlie Baker and Mayor Marty Walsh. The ribbon-cutting that closed the ceremonial part of the MassRobotics opening featured a red ribbon that was automatically strung on the spot by one of their robots. The ribbon-cutting was followed by laboratory tours and robotic demonstrations that were truly remarkable. These demos included products-in-action from two dozen top robotics companies located all across Massachusetts.

Ma ss Robot ic s is a n outgrowth of a (very) high-tech collaboration between MassTLC, the Mass Robotics Cluster,

The robotics industry was (and still is) growing very rapidly in Massachusetts and all around New England. This collaboration led to the founding of an “innovation hub”, uniting the northeastern region’s robotics leaders. This “hub” formally began five years ago; a new co-working place devoted to testing and prototyping started up in 2017. MassRobotics has become a collective that allows

private companies to develop new technologies of their own and now, South Boston has become the home of MassRobotics.

The demographics of the MassRobotics relocation to South Boston are ver y interesting.

This isn’t to be critical of Kendall Square in Cambridge, but that specific location has now become essentially full.

There is very little empty office space, and certainly, there is no lab space for robotics. South

Boston’s 12 Channel Street building, originally designed for warehousing and light manufacturing, is actually sited in our own Innovation Square area within Flynn Marine Park, and because of that, 12 Channel Street can realistically be a center for sophisticated, high-tech laboratories.

Mayor Walsh echoed that planning, when he spoke of 12 Channel Street and Mass Robotics being an avenue for young Bostonians to “stay here” and f ind a career for themselves. Gov. Baker pointed out that a high percentage of Massachusetts companies “have robots somewhere” in their organizations. Obviously, there will be a sharply increasing dema nd for ser v ice s a nd support from MassRobotics.
