Jon Cronin Receives Walsh “Leadership in Recovery” Award

by Rick Winterson Here in the City of Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, there’s an important award that recognizes significant efforts in the cause of Recovery – it’s the Martin J. Walsh “Leadership in Recovery” Award. In this case, the word “Recovery” means overcoming alcohol or drug abuse. Monday evening, January 13, in a highly meaningful ceremony attended by 200 at South Boston’s Seaport Hotel, Mayor Walsh conferred the third annual “Leadership in Recovery” Award upon Restaurateur and South Boston Developer Jon Cronin.

Over the last two decades, Jon Cronin has freely given a great deal of assistance and economic support to the cause of Recovery, even though Jon isn’t in Recovery himself. He did this work and made his contributions because he realizes that people with substance abuse problems need a helping hand from members of the

surrounding community. These people are unable to solve their problems with alcohol or drugs by themselves. Recovery requires a collaborative effort – an effort that resulted in the South Boston Collaborative Center 20+ years ago.

Last Monday’s Award program was quite impressive. It was opened by Andy Ward, the

Bob DeLeo, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker. It was especially meaningful to hear Speaker DeLeo – not only were his remarks humorous, but he’s also the very first recipient of the Mayor Walsh’s “Leadership in Recovery” Award.

Leadership Award the Award on Jon. Both of them stressed the importance of efforts by and within the community in overcoming addiction and substance abuse problems. They used the word “collaborative” several times. It is worth repeating that Recovery has to be a community effort; it can’t be achieved alone.

In addition to his key support, Jon is also a successful developer – the founder and CEO of the Cronin

Group LLC. Based on Liberty Wharf and employing 2,000, Jon’s Group has been responsible for many successful developments, in both the Seaport District and the residential side of South Boston.

He’s also the owner of Tony C’s on Northern Avenue. Jon is a family man as well; his wife Nicole was on hand at the Award presentation. She is a South Boston businesswoman herself – Ku De Ta on East Broadway – and it goes without saying that her support is an essential part of all of Jon’s good works.

The Death of My Best Friend. . .

By Charles A. Harrington To say we were friends would be like saying Henry Ford made a few automobiles. Kevin Flaherty was my closest friend back in 1949, he was 9, I was 10, we lived in the same South Boston neighborhood, just 3 blocks from each other. Kevin lived in an attached 7-room single family home, on West 8th Street, when I lived on the top floor of a 3-family apartment, at 149 D Street, Kevin attended St. Augustine’s School, at the time I attended St. Peter and Paul. Kevin had a sled, he was one of the few kids that I knew who owed one back then, yet he shared it all of the kids.

We spent a lot of time together outside of school. Kevin’s parents, Martin and Margaret Flaherty, were always kind to me. Kevin was a changeof-life baby, born when his parents were both in their 40s, and married over 25 years when Kevin was born. Mr. Flaherty worked for Sears & Roebuck, sometimes I would be invited for dinner at Kevin’s home, always with a warning from my mother: “Remember your manners.” Another fond memory was waiting with Kevin, at the corner of West 8th street, and D Street, for his father to return home from work. Mr. Flaherty drove an old green Dodge, I don’t recall how old the car was, but it had a running board, he would stop the car, at the corner, of West 8th and D streets, then we would both jump on the running board, Mr. Flaherty would yell: “hold on tight,” then drove slowly into his driveway, a distance of about 300

feet. We both thought that was cool fun back then. On some Sunday afternoons, I was invited for a ride with Kevin, many times we stopped at Howard Johnson’s for an ice cream cone.

We both were never street angels, and we often went where angels fear to thread. Next to the Flaherty’s home, lived the Cannata’s, an older couple who had one son named Anthony, who was much older than us, we thought Tony was ancient, perhaps he was 24 or 25, at that time. Tony used to ride his Raleigh, a 3-speed bicycle to work, we would asked him if we could take a ride on his bike, but he always refused us.

Tony’s father, Mr. Cannata, who was retired, grew tomatoes, one day we were hanging out near Kevin’s home, a neighbor, who was talking to Mr. Cannata, said to him as we walked by: “They are nice boys.” Mr. Cannata did not respond.

The next day, it was my idea to steal tomatoes from Mr. C’s garden, Kevin was on board. We went to the side of the Cannata home, where only a 6-foot fence separated us from the ripe tomatoes. We climbed the fence and was about to jump down to the tomatoes, when we suddenly heard Mr. Cannata’s loud voice: “Nice-a-Boys?” “Get the hell off my fence!” We both jumped down quickly, laughing, while taking off running. My robbery of the tomatoes, was nipped in the bud, yet a lesson was learned, we never tried it again.

On the next street behind Kevin’s house, lived an older lady named Mary Coyne. Mrs. Coyne seemed to always be sitting by her first-floor window, during

the entire day, she was a pestiferous lady, who acted bizarre, even when there was no full moon. When we were near her home, she would tell us to move on, one time she called the cops on us for loitering. We usually gave her some backtalk, one day, after an argument, she called Mrs. Flaherty, complaining to her about our bad behavior. She would of called my mother as well, but we did not have a phone back then. Neither one of our mothers paid any attention to her.

Friday, January 20, 1950, was a very cold day, with the temperatures hovering in the low teens, as I awoke, about 7 a.m., I heard sounds of fire engines, coming from the direction of Kevin’s home, I quickly ran toward his street, as I turned the corner, I saw both the Flaherty and Cannata homes fully ingulfed in flames.

Seconds later, a neighbor said: “the parents got out, but Kevin is trapped inside.” As the fire became more intensified, it was soon concluded that Kevin would not get out alive, about 10 minutes later, I witnessed 4 firemen carry Kevin’s body from the house, on a stretcher, covered with a blanket. As they passed by, I am not ashamed to say that I cried, It was one of the saddest moments of my life, one that I will never forget.

All the Cannata’s and Kevin’s parents, were able to escape the flames with no injuries; Kevin was the only fatality, the cause of the fire was never determined, to the best of my knowledge.

Kevin’s death was my first experience with a death of a close friend at a young age. Two days later,

along with my mother, we walked into O’Donnell’s Funeral Home, on West Broadway, for the wake, upon entering, I saw Kevin’s closed white casket as Mrs. Flaherty immediately embraced me, hugging me, saying: “Mary Coyne won’t have my Kevin to pick on anymore,” Watch out for her.”

My mother did not allow me to go to the funeral the next day. Sears & Roebuck gave Kevin’s parents new furniture and appliances, when they moved into an apartment in a housing project, a short time later, the pain of suffering such a tremendous loss, of the death of their only son, was a huge cross for them to bear. I never saw Mrs. Flaherty again since that tragic day.

The years have passed quickly, I have often thought what would Kevin think of all the new gadgets and changes that have come into our lives since 1950. Life can often be unfair, some of us live to an old age, and are blessed with good health, along the way, while others, like Kevin, are taken, at an unexplained early age.

On January 20th, will mark 70 years since that fatal fire. Despite the many years that have gone by so quickly, Kevin still remains in my mind, as well as in prayer, he will always remain in my memory forever, along with many memories that we both shared so many years ago.

We will meet again. . .

Mayor Delivers Stemwinder

by Rick Winterson On Tuesday evening January 7, just over a week ago, the City of Boston’s Mayor Martin J. Walsh delivered his 2020 “State of the City” address to an audience jampacked into Symphony Hall. To jump ahead to the conclusion of his address, he gave a stirring speech, which he emphatically concluded by praising Boston for everything it offers its residents.

His strong delivery of the address’s climax, using phrases that began with “We believe … “, brought the audience to its feet in an enthusiastic standing ovation. The cheers and excited applause from those in Symphony Hall almost (but not quite) drowned out the Mayor’s final words. Walsh used rhetoric in a good and proper way to make his overall point that “Boston is a great City!”

Which we agree it certainly is.

The pre-speech program was a successful lead-in to the Mayor’s remarks.

A quartet of religious leaders – Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim – pronounced individual blessings.

A fine church choir and a diverse, youthful, melodic string quartet (who generated an enthusiastic standing “O”) provided excellent music. A precision color guard

presented the American f lag.

Three new citizens shared reading the “Pledge of Allegiance”. Our Anthem was beautifully sung solo, a capella. Four people who had benefited from City Hall programs – jobs, housing, “Age Strong”, education – each spoke brief ly.

The Mayor then took to the podium. He began by narrating some notable upsides to the 2019 year-end picture of the City of Boston. Serious crimes and arrests are down by a third – 30% and 33%, respectively. Police antiweapon drives have taken 5,000 guns off Boston’s streets. While key budget items like housing are very expensive in Boston, the City’s overall economy is in very good shape. Unemployment here is 3% or so, which means essentially that everyone who wants a job has one. The Mayor mentioned 120,000 jobs had been added in and around Boston during the last six years. The City has become a mecca for high-tech industries and start-ups, especially in the life sciences. And no one has to be told about the pace of development, particularly in South Boston and along our Waterfront.

Walsh also affirmed that the National NA ACP Convention will be held here in July this year.

Mayor Walsh expressed his

approach to three major problems that we all know remain in the City.

Boston’s schools are basically twotier, transportation is increasingly a commuting headache, and housing in the City costs more than many (most?) of us can afford. On or before the start of 2023, Boston will invest an additional $100 million in its public schools, aimed at more challenging curriculum (longer days?), STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics), and student motivational support.

Walsh also pledged to invest $500 million in more affordable housing, which will come from selling City properties, a 2% tax on major real estate transfers, and a rental voucher program. A partnership with key local private enterprises may also begin – a really novel concept. Regarding transportation, the Mayor mentioned the Action Committee

in East Boston and he promised stricter traffic enforcement by the Boston Police Department.

Mayor Wa lsh ’s speech was commendably brief – 27 minutes. As a comment, global warming, the ever-rising sea levels, and the flooding we have already experienced need to be addressed as soon as possible, but no mention was made of that issue.

Susan McDonough: A 2020 Profile

By Rick Winterson To s ay t h at Su s a n McDonough, who was born and brought up in South Boston, is devoted to veterans’ causes is an understatement.

On both professional and personal levels, she is an effective and hard-work ing cha mpion of veterans and their interests.

Please consider that Susan was asked to run for the Office of Commander, Martin F. McDonough American Legion Post #368. (EDITOR’S NOTE: She is not related to him.) She is the second woman to occupy that position; she firmly believes that leading the Post is her most important ongoing job.

In addition to that, Susan has been appointed the Chief Marshal of this year’s 2020 St. Patrick’s/ Evacuation Day Parade, becoming only the third woman ever selected. During South Boston Online’s interview with Susan last Sunday at the McDonough Post, we asked her how she felt about that. She humbly replied, “I am beyond honored to have been chosen.” And it must be remembered that the Parade is an event that honors veterans as its chief mission. Not only is Susan helping to plan the 2020 Parade as a member of the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council

South Boston’s Susan McDonough – Director, Women Veterans’ Network; Chief Marshal, 2020 St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade; and Commander, McDonough American Legion Post #368. (the SBAW VC), she herself is a four-year Army veteran.

Next week, on Tuesday, January 21 – the day after Martin Luther King’s Holiday - Susan will take on the job of Women Veterans’ Network Coordinator, a Commonwealth of Massachusetts position in the state’s Department of Veterans Services. Her efforts will recognize that women are the fastest-growing group in military and veteran communities – 15% of those on active duty; 10% of veterans. One of Susan’s first tasks will be organizing a conference in June to support female veterans’ empowerment. Watch for it. In November of this year, she’ll select a deserving female veteran

to receive the Deborah Sampson Award. Sampson was a woman originally from Plympton, who disguised herself as a man and enlisted in the Revolutionary War. She was discovered after being wounded in New York, and then honorably discharged in 1783. Paul Revere helped her obtain a much-deserved militar y pension when she returned to her farm in Sharon.

Military ser vice in the McDonoug h fa mi ly d ate s back to the Civil War. Susan’s great-great-great-great uncle, William Newland, was a Medal of Honor recipient after serving in the Mobile Bay engagement under Admiral Farragut. She

is the first female in her family to enlist. From 1994 to 1998, she served as a Quartermaster with a rank of E-4 Specialist in Signal and Medical Battalions, at Fort Lewis in Seattle/Tacoma, Washington, and in Taegu, South Korea. Describing her militar y experience, Susa n says, “I got more out of my four years in the Army than the Army ever got back from me.”

As our interview closed, Susan mentioned her enthusiasm for leading the McDonough Post. She has known about the Post ever since being brought there for family events when she was a child. She says, “They asked me if I would become the Commander; I was motivated by gratitude and love for the veterans in this Post.” Susan’s future plans include opening up the Post for more community activities and seeking out younger veterans as new members. The McDonough Post is located in an attractive, convenient alcove at 329A West Broadway. Check it out for yourself when you have a moment.

A Question for Us Around midyear last year (2019), there were several short articles in various newspapers that asked, “Why doesn’t the U.S. have a National Memorial to World War 1?”, even though it is now more than a century since that war – “The War to End All Wars” – ended with an Armistice on November 11, 1918. That’s a good question. With the high regard South Boston has for our military veterans, it’s a question we should ask ourselves also.

The question has been answered in part. After many difficulties deciding on just where to locate the World War I Memorial, then raising the necessary funds, and then deciding just how the Memorial should look, work will begin on America’s National World War I Memorial early this year (2020).

It will be located in Pershing Park, which is close to the downtown area of Washington, D.C. The Memorial design is entitled “The

Weight of Sacrifice” by architect Joseph Wieshaar; the figures in the Memorial will be created by sculptor Sabin Howard.

World War I was America’s first involvement in a global war.

We did not enter the war seeking territory or plunder; we entered because our shipping on the Atlantic Ocean was threatened and attacked by an aggressor.

We sent two million (2,000,000) troops to Europe to fight with our allies – 116,078 of them paid

the ultimate sacrifice – twice the number we lost in Vietnam. There were 103 World War I soldiers from South Boston who lost their lives in combat, including Michael “Mickey” Perk ins.

So the question becomes: “Why doesn’t South Boston have a Memorial to those from here who died in combat in World War I?” - perhaps near our World War II Memorial, or at Medal of Honor Park, or in a secluded corner of Moakley Field/Carson Beach.

Councilor Flynn Re-Files Four Hearing Orders Focused on Eviction & Housing Stability, Public Safety, Quality of Life

At this week’s Boston City Council meeting, Councilor Flynn has re-filed four hearing orders on issues related to housing stability, public safety, and quality of life issues.

The hearing orders include:\Hearing to discuss ways to support tenants facing eviction and displacement: following property transfers, many long time tenants are getting evicted with limited notice and it can be very difficult for them to find new homes

in a short period of time. Councilor Flynn hopes to have a conversation on providing longer eviction notice periods for tenants, so that tenants who have lived in properties for five years or more should be provided one year’s notice to vacate following property transfers, along with information regarding resources available to assist with searching for new housing; while seniors, the disabled, and low-income residents should be afforded two years notice.

Hearing on issues related to stray voltage: for the last two years, following tragic incidents where pets were either harmed or passed away, Councilor Flynn convened working sessions with city officials, members of Boston’s Street Lighting Division & the Department of Public Works, Eversource, and MSPCA to discuss efforts to address the potential dangers of stray voltage to residents and pets. Councilor Flynn

plans to continue building on the city’s progress last year regarding infrastructure improvements, coordination with stakeholders, and educational information.

Hearing to discuss safety of construction sites: most recently, a construction worker was struck and killed by equipment while setting up “First Night” celebrations in Boston late December. There was an incident where a woman was seriously injured by falling debris from a construction site in the North End in July of 2019. The hearing will discuss existing safety procedures and precautions at construction sites and ways that the city can ensure the protection and wellbeing of our workers and residents.

permitted hours, which affects the quality of life for residents. The hearing aims to discuss the process for off hours construction and other relevant development issues, such as rodent control, as well as enforcement and accountability for violations.

“The hearing orders that I’m re-filing this week reflect the critical issues of housing stability, public safety, and the quality of life for our residents,” said Councilor Flynn.

“From stray voltage to protections for our tenants, to making sure that construction companies abide by the rules and keeping construction sites safe, I believe that these are all important issues that warrant our attention. I look forward to these discussions at the Council in the months ahead.”

Gray’s Hall Opens New Year’s Eve

by Rick Winterson It took place on December 31 from 4 p.m. until 12 midnight – New Year’s Eve (or late last year, if you wish). No matter – the experience at the opening of the new Gray’s Hall was memorable, as well as a fine way to bring in the New Year (and Decade) of 2020. Gray’s Hall is a wine bar that combines fine wines from around the globe with limitedbut-upscale food offerings – six appetizers, seven mains, and a dessert. The idea behind Gray’s Hall is printed on its menu: “A natural meeting place.”

Gary’s Hall at 615 East Broadway looks out on Flood Square, where I Street intersects with Broadway’s main drag. It is immediately next door to American Provisions, which is fitting because the co-owners of American Provisions – Andy Fadous and Matt Thayer – are also the founders and co-owners of Gray’s Hall.

Between them, Andy and Matt bring decades of food and beverage management experience “to the table” (please pardon the pun).

Plus that, both of these gentlemen have created a very notable success in South Boston with American Provisions, especially because of its

Gray’s Hall itself is located on a historic site. The original Gray’s Hall - now gone of course - was once the meeting place of the South Boston Citizens’ Association (the SBCA), which is the oldest, continuously operating civic group in the U.S. Check out the plaque mounted on the building by the SBCA on their 125th Anniversary back in 2005.

Be sure to read the menu carefully when you visit Gray’s Hall. You’ll find dishes ranging from Europe to Thailand in the Far East. The starter list ends with Yukon potatoes – found at the Alaskan border. As for

the list of shared plates, South Boston Online will only mention the presence of kimchi, a Korean side-dish based upon Napa cabbage. You’re in for a dining adventure at Gray’s Hall. And the menu will be seasonal, changing throughout the year as various fresh ingredients become available Naturally, fine wines are the

center of the offerings at Gray’s Hall. There are seven champagnes/ sparkling wines, eleven whites, and eleven reds. The whites range back to a 2013 Riesling; the reds to a 2015 Pinot Noir. Several wines are available by the glass. Our expert server, Julia Bailey, first brought a French white wine that this writer’s guest found too fruity, so she settled on a more balanced Northern Italian white. Beers are also served, such as a local IPA from Trillium. Fever Tree seltzer and an unusually flavorful Maine root beer are available as well.

The wine lists will change and evolve over time as other desirable vintages come onto the market.

Pay a visit to Gray’s Hall. It is open seven days a week from 4 p.m. until 12 midnight. Get to know the staff, who are all highly qualified. Gray’s Hall is “A natural meeting place”.

And it’s definitely a successful New Year’s Eve opening for Gray’s Hall.

Congratulations EMT Graduates Mayor Martin J. Walsh joined Boston EMS to celebrate the graduation of 24 Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) recruits in a ceremony at Faneuil Hall. This graduating class will be assigned to 911 ambulances, strengthening the City of Boston’s emergency medical services (EMS).

“Congratulations to this new group of recruits who are joining the ranks of an elite first-responder family.

Boston EMTs and Paramedics are heroes who often show up first on the scene of a crisis or tragedy,” said Mayor Walsh. “They save lives and offer immediate help with the utmost professionalism and compassion. The men and women graduating today will be making a difference in the lives of Boston residents across the City, and we cannot thank them enough.”

Today’s ceremony in front of family, friends and colleagues formally acknowledges 24 recruits’ successful completion of a rigorous post-hire training program for EMTs at Boston EMS. Already state-certified EMTs prior to hire, this graduating class, 50 percent of which is women, completed an additional 27 weeks of classroom and field training. Known as “Recruit Class 2019-2,” the recruits were trained in a variety of life-threatening emergency situations, including active shooter incidents, hazardous materials exposure, transportation accidents, recovery services, human

trafficking and mass casualty incidents.

“This job is more than a career.

It is a calling,” said Boston EMS Chief James Hooley. “Every day when they put on the uniform and hit the streets of Boston, they will be asked to help others through some of the most-frightening times of their lives. It demands passion, purpose and a lot of heart. Not everyone can do this job, but I know these graduates have what it takes. I’m proud to be here today to officially welcome them to the Boston EMS family.”

This academy class responded to nearly 5,000 9-1-1 calls during their training, treating and transporting more than 3,800 patients. Those emergency incidents included baby deliveries, cardiac arrests, motor vehicle accidents, shootings, stabbings, overdoses and more.

Seven of today’s graduates, including the department’s first Somali EMT, began the path toward employment through Boston’s first EMT City Academy program, a partnership between the Office of Workforce Development and Boston EMS to expand the pool of qualified EMT applicants and reduce hiring barriers for city residents.

The program included a scholarship for the Boston EMS EMT course.

With guidance from seasoned EMT field training officers, recruits are not only prepared to care for patients, regardless of the circumstances, they

also now understand the level of care, clinical excellence and professionalism expected of Boston EMS EMTs. “It is a noble commitment to serve others every single day,” said Rita Nieves, Interim Executive Director of the Boston Public Health Commission. “Our EMTs and Paramedics are the ones people turn to during their most vulnerable and critical moments, and they answer the call with kindness, respect and the best medical care available. I want congratulate our graduates and thank them for bringing compassionate care to the people of Boston.”

Boston EMS is one of the busiest municipal EMS providers in New England, responding to more than 125,000 emergency medical incidents per year. As a bureau of the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), Boston EMS is committed to serving

Boston’s residents through clinical excellence, emergency planning and preparedness, and community outreach.

In his FY19 budget, Mayor Walsh prioritized funding for 20 additional EMTs, increasing the number of budgeted full-time EMS providers from 375 to 395 for the City of Boston. Mayor Walsh’s FY20 budget added 4 EMTs to promote diversity and recruitment as well as resources to expand the capacity of Boston EMS’s Community Assistance Team, also known as Squad 80. Squad 80 is a two-person team that travels in an SUV and answers calls where patients have a low frequency of being transported to the emergency room, making more ambulances available for priority calls that need to get patients to the hospital. It also connects people to our recovery or homeless services and other city programs.

Spring Comes to Pleasure Bay (Briefly)

Kiteboarding (a.k.a. “Kitesurfing”, which is actually somewhat different) is definitely a spring and summer sport around here, especially on Pleasure Bay. But last weekend, January 11 and 12, with temperatures in the 60s, kiteboarding ruled Pleasure Bay all the day long, even though water temps were barely over 40 degrees. The stiff southwesterly wind, at times over 40 knots, was also a significant factor. Speeds and the “pops” as much as thirty feet into the air were both at the max.

South Boston Catholic Academy News Grade 6 students at South Boston Cat holic Ac ademy created an Enchanted Village to highlight the spirit of Christmas while incorporating important math and design concepts. The students created models adhering to building constraints ensuring that their structures fell within allowed guidelines such as surface area, volume, and the cost of construction using rates and proportions. Having studied the character of Scrooge in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, they drew inspiration for their village from the novel’s Victorian setting. Each student constructed a building of their choice, some replications of South Boston businesses are represented! The younger students visited the display and were invited

to participate in a math scavenger hunt to enjoy and to appreciate the math work involved in this production. Great job 6th grade!

2020 our students in grades 4A & 4B did a wonderful job participating in our school Mass at St. Brigid Church. Father Casey, our Pastor, was the

celebrant at this Mass and our South Boston Catholic Academy Children’s Choir, led by our music teacher, Ms. Eleanor Tynan, did a great job singing at this Mass.
