Web We Want

Festival Festival

Thursday 28 – Sunday 31 May

Join us for the third weekend of our Web We Want festival, investigating the past 25 years of the web and looking to the future. The festival is inspired by the work of Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web. This is an opportunity to celebrate all that is wonderful and extraordinary about the Web, and to explore its challenges and difficulties.

Because the Web allows us to communicate with people around the world, it is a vehicle for creative exploration, personal relationships and enormous business opportunities.

However, there is also jeopardy – the ‘dark net’ facilitates underground online networks for everything from buying drugs to extreme politics.

In addition, universal and open access to the Web is under threat and its governance is in the hands of a small number of people.

We live online. The Web is how we live now and this festival explores why we need to fight for it.

Web We Want Day and Weekend passes Immerse yourself in the weird and wonderful world of the Web with a Web We Want festival pass. It gives you access to debates, workshops, installations, artworks and performances for all ages. In the first 100 days of the new government, we explore their plans for digital legislation.

What would the Web look like if it was run by women? We look at the role of women in the development of the Web, from Ada Lovelace to Dame Stephanie ‘Steve’ Shirley.

We all take part in the National Census every 10 years, but what would it look like if the Census became a constant feature of our lives and our cityscape? Census is a prototype exploring how the existing census could be redesigned to utilise the immense digital potential of the population.

Grumbling Fur Time Machine Orchestra and Mark Titchner perform Rose Rose is an immersive video work by Mark Titchner with an original soundtrack by Grumbling Fur (Daniel O’Sullivan and Alexander Tucker).

They perform a new live score alongside a multi-screen version of Rose, specially developed for The Clore Ballroom.

Age of Earthquakes: An Extreme Present Conversation

Julian Assange in Conversation with Baroness Beeban Kidron OBE

Hans Ulrich Obrist, one of the world’s most influential curators, and Shumon Basar, writer and cultural critic, join forces to explore the effects of digital technology on our brains and on the planet, in an era they call the Extreme Present. Panel includes games designer Naomi Alderman, author Tom McCarthy and science writer Gaia Vince.

An evening of conversation with Julian Assange, founder and publisher of WikiLeaks, who joins us live from the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

He is interviewed by Baroness Beeban Kidron OBE, founder of iRights.
